A single gust of wind spell was the closest thing to non-lethal that was available at the party after so much adventuring and so little rest. The mage was the only one concious at that moment, and it was that or lightning bolt (which was almost certain not to take him down). Fall just barely killed him due to rolling all 5's and 6's. Bitchass was probably more angry that he didn't get to "sadly, dejectedly" loot our corpses after a "terrible misunderstanding" of slaughtering the lot of us.

Fuck if I know. Maybe it's to get away from the utter shit that is almost all freeform collaborative storytelling?

No rules, no plot, no DM, no hope. Or worse, a DM. In freeform. Who despotically rules with the power of rule zero, but no idea of how to use it, and always with a DMPC. And there's still no hope, no actual rules for the players to balance out the 'DM's' powertripping, and usually no plot. On top of most freeformers being utterly retarded and some form of extremist.

Our That Guy isn't actually that bad.

He's just out to dick with the DM in every conceivable fashion I've ever heard of and a few I have yet to completely understand.

Pic related. His latest shenanigans involve his character being a eunuch, something he established ten sessions ago upon character creation. Now we find ourselves in the midst of fighting succubi and he's the only one who has yet to fall victim to them.

In fact, he's given psychological counseling to the other characters, a few NPCs, and one succubus that tried to target him and found itself very terribly confused about its place in the universe, which revolves entirely around seducing mortals to create more fuel for a machine that is built around punishing evil mortals and fighting the Blood War.

He even brought out a pair of reading glasses and a pad of paper to take notes.

I would, but he already gave himself one for hijacking a royal ball and turning it into, and I quote, "The greatest party this kingdom has ever seen."

There were minstrels. There were fools. There were peasants mingling with the peerage. There was dwarven dancing, a murder mystery in masquerade, and noble lineages that were revealed to be not quite so noble nine months after the fact.

He gave the medal to himself by handing it to a hungover king, got it put around his neck in front of the ragtag remains of the attendees, and got us all to hurry the fuck out of there before someone got wise to the fact that he crashed the party.

The sad part is that we helped him put it all together but didn't realize it until there was nothing we could do to stop it without inciting the wrath of important people.

Hearing the DM talk about it, you'd think he was That Guy.

The DM has long since learned to stop giving examples of his shenanigans, and mostly just talks about how he disrupts his plans without going into detail.

    >>16220321

There are hours more of this kind of thing, but the majority of it is terribly involved and requires knowledge of the DM's setting to really grasp it all... which is sort of how he operates, from what I understand.

James(The alleged "That Guy") likes to get information on the world he's supposed to be playing in. He knows the one thing that a lot of trolltastic players fail to recognize, and that is that many DMs with homebrew settings like to tell people about what they've done with their settings and how it all works and why the history is important, etc. So when someone like James comes along that seems interested in it all, they'll spill their guts about everything.

He told me about the relevant bits later. How King Herp married Queen Derp after the Hurrdurr War, how Duke Whatever XII attended magic college because of it... and then he laid out his latest plan and how it would all work. When I posed a potential problem, he just shook his head, grinned, and said it wouldn't matter because that's not how the DM thinks about things under pressure.

    And he was right.

That is the player that may be no end of headache to the DM, but is completely invaluable to the group. Whole group dynamics hinge on players like that, and they're a treasure. I'd like nothing better, as a DM, to have a party of nothing but fucking genius players like that - they'd keep me on my toes constantly. I'd have to be my best for players like that and it would invigorate and vitalize my zest for the monotonous and boring aspects of planning and world-creation, if I knew I could give my players anything and they would give me things I never thought possible.

TBH I kinda play like that, although maybe not quite so vindictively; I fluster and can't think properly if i don't understand that situation or the setting because i hate when people do actions with assumptions on the setting.

One of my that guy stories: This one is slightly different in that its about my own brother. I've played rpgs for a few years now and i really enjoy them so when a new game was starting i brought my younger brother to play.

He started off with a brash and reckless electricity controller who did whatever shit he felt like whenever which got the party in trouble on several occasions. This would later come to a head when after dicking the party by getting captured and ratting us out, he was killed by a member of the party.
Initially it wasn't so bad (I expected him to freak out or something) but it soon got worse. His new character (a tattoo-ed thief a la witchblade) had no motivation to be with us and would keep going off for stupid side missions, stealing stuff from nearby npcs or acting recklessly which fucked up the party (herp derp I smash the retreating enemies in the face so they stop backing off and come round to fight). Then his character began acting incredibly reckless if not suicidally; like fighting rooms of armed guards and jumping out of flying helicopters till eventually he just turned around and walked straight into a minefield.

Turns out that he had cooked up some asshole plan to get his old character ressurected as a zombie and rejoin. Res'ed character is now a total asshole and wrecks shit all the time like punching people or frying them with lightning. Goes on for a while before he electrocutes a friendly npc (bought by one of the pcs) because he refused to help him, then the same character as before chokes him to death.

    New character
    Medic
    goes okay, still kinda reckless
One bad thing happens and he becomes an asshole again
Muses to me why noone likes his characters

In a dickish sort of way, yes. I'll explain that part later. Picking up where I left off from >>16220433...

The DM ran us through a scenario wherein we were going to see a big prosperous city, someplace he probably though James couldn't possibly do any damage. So the first thing he does is lead us to a tavern.

Harmless enough, if not for the fact that the DM going to throw us through a loop. On our way, James's character is accosted by a cowled figure and given a clinking purse. Taking it in stride, James continues on with his lead and gets a room for the night. While he's there, he checks the purse and finds it's full of platinum.

Platinum that was apparently meant to go to an assassin, who had just eliminated King Herp. Something we found out because a rather large group of burly men in very intimidating armor strode past our place at the inn and locked every entrance and exit of the city.

First thing we do is give James one of what we've come to refer to as The Group Look Of Horror. We do this from time to time. It makes him laugh and the DM's ears turn red. The fact that we might have reason to do so because he might have actually done this was merely coincidental.

Twenty minutes of players passing notes to each other later, James says that he'd like to get a better view of the funeral and follows it up with several Disguise checks on the party...

Forever-a-freeformfag here. I suppose I have a story of That Bro.

It was a year or two ago, I think. Semi-freeform vidyagaem nation RP. Fuck, we took what we could get, people RP anything imaginable in some circles. Namely, the shithole of Warcraft III. The map was Alternate Future. Fun with the right people. The right people never play.

We formed a little bloc of our own, we did. He was Novarussoya. Russia's government fell, and was replaced, then fell again, and was replaced again. The end result was an empowered Russia, which managed to keep its momentum going, and a decent relation with the rest of the world, since the Eastern Bloc was freed. I was the Ottoman Empire. The Empire... Wasn't as glorious as it used to be. The Auspicious Incident never occured; the Turkish military had managed to somewhat modernize without incident in this timeline. Then de-modernized as the Corps were reformed when it was found that modernization was too hard for the stagnative Turkish monarchy. The Empire was backwards, the Sultan was an incompetent jolly fat man, and the whole state was just struggling to remain relevant in these modern times.

And this is where they come together. The year is 1945. Nova Russoya needed resources and an allied state to balance out the power blocs. The Ottoman Empire needed help turning the Janissary Corps from lazy traitorous assholes, to the crack military super-army they used to be. And so the great troop and weaponry exchange between the two states began.

    Continued!

Thirty minutes later, the entire group has managed to insert themselves into the royal guard, which was setting up to protect Queen Derp during the funeral. The fact that this was part of James's plan seemed to put the DM off for a moment or two, which indicated that he wasn't quite expecting this.

We were dressed up in the armor, the weird helmets, the shields, and most importantly the weaponry. Wearing the bright red armor meant that we weren't subject to the No Weapons Allowed Within Sight Of The Queen rule for the funeral. And given what James told me, they were going to be necessary.

Spot checks abound. Everyone was rolling them, everywhere. Even a few street urchins that somehow made it onto the scene and were being paid in platinum by James himself. Sure, some ran away with it and never looked back, but those that did stick around were rolling with us as NPC observers.

And that's when it happened. The moment of truth. The wizardly figure on a palace balcony, pointing his finger at the queen. And according to our wizard's Spellcraft check, it was a Disintegrate spell.

Cue the wizard desperately trying to counter the spell in plate armor. Also cue the rest of us drawing crossbows and trying to shoot him down. Also also cue the street urchins shouting and pointing. Also also also cue a baker, paid twenty platinum pieces to do so on cue, breaking through the gaps in the royal guard's line that was created by our party to toss an obscene amount of flour on the queen to create a miss chance due to concealment.

Did I fail to mention that James thrust himself on the queen for a loving kiss?

    Because he did.

The Ottoman Empire began exploiting its massive oil fields. Industrialization began. Egypt was annexed. Spetznaz would come and go, causing the Sultan to shit bricks when they appeared out of nowhere, training the Janissaries into proper soldiers instead of mooching cancerous sultan-killers. Modern artillery in great quantity and caliber were made. Janissaries stood on guard, keeping the peace. Novarussoya was being all shadowy and Russian, isolationist aside from its dealings with the Turks. Soviet-era tanks rolled across the desert. The Empire was becoming great again.

So, overall, we were having a good time. Then, we looked at what the others were doing while we were cocking about, preparing for whatever clusterfuck of a war or crisis would inevitably come.

    What we saw was horrible.

But in the end, Duke Whatever XII's spell, and it was Duke Whatever XII's spell because he was the only one that was power hungry enough to go to mage college for long enough to get the power to take what he wanted, went off in spite of the counterspell, just like James said it would.

And it beat the miss chance due to concealment from the cloud of flour.

And the crossbow bolts were a huge success, in that they hit their target but did little else to stop the wizardly Duke aside from make him teleport away.

But what the Disintegrate hit wasn't a soft and squishy queen. Oh no. What it hit was James the Bard, who had used his body as cover for the queen. He had a scant handful of hit points left over after it took its toll, but that handful was all he needed to have to start running like his hair was on fire and his ass was catching.

He'd saved the queen, exactly like he said he would. The only thing he didn't call was getting away with his hide after the fact... or getting paid by the queen to hunt down the regicidal Wizard Duke.

Of course, that last bit isn't entirely accurate. He didn't say that would happen at all. He just said that he'd get paid for giving the queen the best kiss she'd ever had.

And as far as anyone in the kingdom knows, that's exactly why.

I am pretty sure I'm my group's THAT GUY.
It started out with playing a dorf. Rest of the party was two humans and an elf.
I make elf jokes, the player doesn't respond. Like jokingly ordering sticks and dirt for them at inns, as part of a larger joke about being able to guess what everyone wants to eat. Player passes a note to the DM, they get their whatever, game goes on. I keep it up, and no one ever reacts to the jokes.
Next game, paladins, elves, and aasimar in the party. I roll up a tiefling warlock and sneak back to claim bones from fallen foes. Paladins ignore it, elves ignore it, aasimar ignore it. I animate the dead, prohibited by their churches, in front of them, and they ignore it.
The game after, since I'm getting no reaction, and no OOC discussion other than telling me that I'm doing a good job with my character, I decide to test the boundaries further and roll up a cannibalistic demon-empowered gnoll who regularly uses abilities that cause his skin to burst off. Gore magically disappears inches from them (apparently) and their response to a party member turning into a ten-foot skinless monstrosity with six arms is to direct him to a foe the fighty cleric is having trouble with.
I don't want to cause a TPK, I just want some damned discussion and characterisation through arguing, people. Is this a foreign concept?
Pic related, what I'm regretfully pulling out if I don't get some damn arguing.

    That bro story:
Our party is exploring a tomb underneath a pyramid when we stumble upon a chamber full of ancient artifacts. We think to ourselves "Why the hell not, lets loot it."
Shenanigans unfold and we find magic books, a magic sun stone, and we finally end up looking at mysterious box with ominous writing describing the end of existence when the box is opened.
    We stay the fuck away.
That guy sends in his "pet" goat to investigate the box once we are outside. The goat nudges the box open and from within bursts a portal to hell that devours the goat into an eternal hell and demons start pouring out of the box.
Hurricane force winds blow out of the chamber and the fighter and I (I was a monk) start dropping strength checks around 25 - 30 range every round to hold the door shut and keep the hell raging inside of it.
Our wizard an heroes, pulls out the sun stone and runs into the room yelling battle cries (he actually started shouting Tolkien Elven at the table) and ignites the stone.
After the dust settles, we peek inside and find out that the heroic efforts of our wizard, existence itself was saved and "that guy's" goat was burned to an eternal hell, never bothering us again.
Congratulations were had and the wizard was rewarded a Mountain Dew and a character sheet for a new lvl 1.

They're doing the right thing by not acknowledging your increasing levels of pants-on-head retardation and dickish derailing. I suggest you stop before they ask you to leave. Of course, you'll just go on and find a different group to harass, so by all means, carry on.

That, I'm not entirely certain of. The DM refuses to speak of that kingdom ever again and James just laughs anytime it's brought up.

But as for the semi-dickish nice guy thing I was talking about in >>16220612. He apparently used to DM quite often, and ran his players through campaign after campaign until the group fell apart due to real life. After that, he started looking over some of the things that happened in his games and picked it all apart to see why he did what he did.

Then he started playing in other people's games and seeing a lot of similar things to what he did when he was just starting out.

Apparently, James dicks with DMs to get them to think outside the box and learn to adapt to the unexpected. He claims it's to get the to grow as a DM and to build their worlds and campaigns flexibly. He went on to say that he didn't mean any real harm by it, but couldn't think of a more enjoyable way than to force them to maneuver to maintain control over the situation.

But then he said, "Or I could just be jerking them around because I like to see other DMs squirm for a change," so I don't know if the laugh that followed it was meant to sound so trolltastic as it did.

We were prepared for this. The Ottoman Empire had very good, well-drilled Janissary regulars, artillery corps that would shatter the skies with their guns, and had built heavy and superheavy tanks to act as hardpoints and gun platforms. There was also a minimal airforce for interception duty. Meanwhile, Nova Russoya had elite corps of Spetznaz, tanks, helicopters...

It happened in two days. All the significant fighting, at least. The Holy Empire of Rhodesia declared war on the heathen Ottoman Empire and invaded with massed infantry and some spec-ops, too. No armor or artillery.

I had both and properly equipped infantry.

Needless to say, Egypt was a massacre, and following the assault, Africa fell like dominoes. Cities were bombarded into submission. African Nazi troops were cut down by Janissary positions and tanks. Slowly, Africa was liberated and annexed.

But then, at the heart of the Rhodesian Empire, was an army of pure derp. Hundreds of pure aryan supah-supahmenz, prepared to surge out and push back the Ottomans.

    If not for Novarussoya.

Concurrently with the Battle of The Nile, the Battle of Cape Town began. Russian spetznaz, of far greater quality than the supposedly invincible Rhodesians, tanks, attack helicopters and the transports that brought them in. A display of combined arms that shocked the world, and shattered the Rhodesian naziblob.

From there, Africa was swept up by the Ottoman Empire with ease. Cape Town remained in Novarussoyan hands.

The Sultan didn't mind very much. On account of the Spetznaz scaring the bejeebus (be-allah?) out of him.

But the story doesn't end there. Oh, no.

Pic very related, why the hell would you do that kind of shit? If you really do just want discussion and characterization as you say, make a character that is morally complex, or propose alternate solutions to the problems your party is presented with or, better yet, just straight-up start the discussions yourself directly. That would be far better than acting like an ass and hoping for a response.

No matter. For the benefit of those who did not see the post preceeding 16221016, Europe and Bourbon France were derpers, nazis for laughs, and didn't actually RP aside from lolnazism, USA and Brazil were metagaming and slapped Mexico's shit, China and India weren't relevant yet and Rhodesia was 40kid White Africa.

Moving on. Relative peace had befallen the world. India's player buggered off and a landgrab between the Ottomans and Chinese ensued. China continued being suspicious as all hell. USE and Bourbon France continued being fuckwits. Brazil and the USA buggered off and Mexico rebelled, claiming all of America, somehow. Novarussoya sold Cape Town to the Imperial Japanese, who didn't do much other than build a small empire and not bother nobody.

And then China went balls-to-the-wall INSANE, and rained hell down upon the world.

Not in the nuking sense, mind, I know that's what might be your first thought in a nation-scale RP. No. As in, RAINING HELL UPON THE EARTH.

    Continued yet more!

As it turned out, the Chinese Communist Party, made a deal with the devil. As in, sold the souls of everyone that wasn't in the military or govvernment to Satan. And ripped open a portal to Hell.

    Shit just got real.

Japan was wiped right the fuck out if I recall, in minutes. A tide of filthy hellspawn surged outwards from China. Janissary units struggled to hold the line in India. Guns were shipped from Istanbul, along with landships. It wasn't enough. India was completely destroyed by the time the line began to move back.

And then Istanbul herself came under siege. The royal guard were mobilized as fast as possible. The devils, defying all terrain, ignored the rest of the Empire. They merely desired to shit upon the heart of the Empire and slaughter the Sultan who had ruled it for so many decades. Her guns cried out, and killed many. Men died by the hundreds, by the thousands, to keep Istanbul safe. Kaiju-sized abominations of Hell were beset by tactical missiles and landships.

But in the end, the world survived. Novarussoyan mechanized Spetznaz pushed back. The janissaries pushed back. The USE and Bourbon France stopped derping and warring with one another for a minute to deal with the threat.

And we all collectively slapped China's satanist shit. Tore down the gates. And pissed on the devil's rotting corpse.

    Almost done, gentlemen.

The world was winding down. Peace was going to be had, finally. The petty squabbles and horrors of war we-

"HEEEEYY, GRIIINGOOOS! CLEAR OUT OF THE GATE SIIIITE! WE ARE GOING TO PURGE IT WITH NUKES! ARRIIBAAA!"

And then the entire Nova Russoyan army that was sweeping up the last of the devils was nuked. Along with men from the other states.

... We never did get around to slapping Mexico's shit for that. Probably because he left afterwards.

There was one last battle to be had, however. The USE and Bourbon France... Apparently they decided they'd slap MY shit, fuck with the second most powerful state in the world. How did they do this, do you ask?

They levied so many infantry that... Well, Europe was completely filled with infantry. Not an exaggeration I'm afraid.

They proceeded to try and besiege Istanbul, its buffer states, and Turkey.

They then proceeded to get blown into tiny bits by heavy artillery and missiles, because they tried to use human wave tactics without any support whatsoever. Both powers fell. In the end, all that was left was three superpowers. Mexican America. The Ottoman Empire. And that bro, Novarussoya.

So ends my shitty tale, /tg/. I hope you enjoyed it. And to whoever had one of my posts baleeted, I hadn't saved that text, you know! It was rather uncouth and uncalled for. Really.

Was usually a party of 4: Me, my bro, the GM (that guy), and the GM's friend (less that guy but still that guy)

Furry, railroading/DMPCing GM, couldn't stand the idea of his characters dying, never ever played an evil character, every game was basically just him and his friend (always some kind of angel or demon or some other bullshit) fulfilling their destinies while my friend and I tagged along with them for no apparent reason, with my bro always making silly characters that fucked with them

It was really a shame because the GM is fun to play video games with, but when it comes to RPGs things just go downhill

If anyone here's looking for a good freeform RPG, I can honestly say that the Vast Empire is one of the best ones out there. Well defined story parameters for the "official" group stories, reasonable "GM"ing with competent writers, and generally decent plots. Also, they play D&D from time to time. They were what got me into RPGs.
