Iron Hands got their own special section in one of the first Astartes books a long time ago. They're basically just a reclusive bunch of assholes who gradually mechanize themselves, go about putting whole sectors to the torch, and holding a grudge against the other original chapters over their Primarch's death.

Other chapters would look up to the Iron Hands if they didn't keep to themselves so much. I can't remember the last time the Iron Hands were involved in a joint military campaign, compared to the Salamanders or the *gasp* Ultramarines.

The Raven Guard are even more irrelevant, though. The only noteworthy things about them are that they have a cooler paint scheme than the Black Templar, and they got this cool guy pretending to be Wolverine.

Chapters are forbidden to exceed 1,000 marines, so when they over-recruit or have spare geneseed it is put towards founding a new chapter.

    >> Anonymous 09/05/11(Mon)04:51 No.16189126
    >>16189068
Any successor chapters are just new Chapters with the same geneseed and different colours. The original chapter still exists but it was maybe too big, or a section of it was cut off from the rest for a while.

The second Founding is a different thing, and where most successor chapters come from.
After the Horus Heresy, it was decided Legions were too big a grouping, so the remaining loyalist legions were split into Chapters, and given their own command heirachy.

In gameplay terms, successor Chapters are just a way to play the army you want in the colours you want, and the fluff is created to allow for this.
    >> Anonymous 09/05/11(Mon)04:53 No.16189141
You know, I love BOTH the Iron Hands and the Raven Guard (I actually play a Raven Guard marine army) and I think both need more fluff.

Like, it's pretty much stated that the Iron Hands hold a grude against Raven Guard because Corax chose to pull back while Ferrus Manus chose to dig deeper into the fight and eventually was killed. They should have some kind of long standing feud whenever they meet where the Iron Hands flat out refuse to fight with them but many of the Raven Guard, though admitting no fault of their Primarch's tactical decision, would want to atone for what they feel was a pointless and tragic loss of the Iron Hands Primarch.

Plus I would love to see the Raven Guards and IH have more fluff written about them in general. Exploring their different campaigns and different feuds within the Imperium.

I do find is crazy that of all the Chapters in the SM codex, Iron Hands didn't get a Special Character. They have one of the most unique army structures of all the marine chapters.

They have no Chaplains, Instead opting for a combined "Techmarine-Chaplain" combo of the "Iron Father." They use a huge amount of both Tanks and Dreads plus they have no real Terminator Squads. Instead, they simply allow Vet Sergent's to wear Terminator armor.

It would make an awesome story if an Inquisitor with a ton of clout was slighted by a Space Wolves company and he somehow found a way to unleash a bunch of GK's on them to try and wipe them out, while still keeping it a secret mostly but then, Caliban just shows up and several companies of Dark Angels come to the rescue of the Wolves, killing the inquisitor (whom it turns out is a radical, harboring secrets of the "fallen") and wiping out the group of Grey Knights.

I'm pretty sure that if the Dark Angels or the Wolves or both fought the Grey Knight and the Inqusition, all hell would break lose and both chapters would end up dead, or worse, there would be a third space marine civil war.

I mean do you have any idea of how many chapters would be against the wolves and Dark Angels? For starters there's all the fanatically loyal chapters like the Minotaurs, Carcharodons and Black Templars, then you have the Grey Knights, and hell, maybe even the Ultramarines and all their shit ton followers, because after all, dur hur the codex is the law.

    I think the exact opposite.

Sisters of Battle, in my mind, would worship Space Marines as living linage to the Emperor and would probably hate the idea of having to kill them (though they would if they had to).

Where as the Grey Knights have been repeatedly shown to be complete tools of the inquisition. Their job is basically to wipe out demon and anything said inquisitor convinces them is bad.

The normal marines probably wouldn't give a fuck about killing Grey Knights because really, Space Marines tend to not give a fuck who their enemies are most of the time and given the GK aren't particularly well known, even within the ranks of normal marine chapters and that Marines seem to have a sharp distaste for the Inquisition, they wouldn't give two fucks about killing these silver lapdogs sent to kill them.

Because if GW wanted to make fluff about a group of dark-metallic armored cyborgs, they would just take the more interesting group and write about the Iron Warriors.

Who are better than Iron Hands in every way possible. Iron Hands merely have hands of Iron. Iron Warriors are completely Iron. What now, bich.

the norse submitted peacefully to christianity though because christian kingdoms were way more powerful.

That's also why their culture survived intact, they were allowed to pass on their religion as stories. Since they were peaceful converts it was not seen as subversive.

Orks? How droll. Perhaps if they ever bothered to use actual -guns- and not those pieces of -scrap- they call 'shooters', they might hit something once in a while. On the other hand, they're considered a threat to the Guard for some reason, so we might as well cleanse them. For the Emperor, you know.

Chaos marines? Perfect, not only do we have to deal with savage green football hooligans waving tetanus-infested pieces of scrap metal around, there's traitors afoot as well. Traitors with actual, working guns, power armor, and chainswords. Chain -axes-, actually. And they're saying something about their Blood God. Right. Well. The Emperor protects and all that, let's go cleanse these brain-damaged lunatics before they manage to behead themselves in a stunning fit of irony. Pack up, everyone, teatime's over, back to work.

Now that we've settled things with the orks and these silly red-painted lunatics, I think it might finally be time for a good, solid...what is that in in the sky? Oh. Well, now as if this worthless ball of mud, weeds, and rock wasn't sufficiently ruined already, it would seem that the Tyranids have seen fit to pay it a visit. Perhaps they plan on making mud pies to console themselves over their losses recently. Or perhaps they've developed some kind of horrific hive beast designed to eat sarcasm and I attracted it here. Or maybe they just like eating rocks. In whatever the case may be, I suppose it's our duty to eradicate them. Suffer not the xeno to live, I suppose. Flamers up, men, bug spray out, let's make as little mess of things as possible so the colonists won't whine as much when they get the planet back.
