11 KB Children of the Imperium Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)22:30 No.16101160
This is not a "Warhammer High" thread. This is not some alternate universe where the Horus Heresy, or the Great Crusade, or the Fall of the Eldar, or any of the myriad of shit that makes the 40k universe the nightmare it is didn't happen. This is a thread that is trying to answer an honest question. What is life like for the youngest members of the Imperium?

We've had hints and ideas here and there, but it has not been enough, I want to know what life is like for the children. What is their schooling like, do the majority of them even go to school, are there Oliver Twist like orphans running through the streets, starving, scraping, and fighting for their next meal? What about teenagers, what's the minimum recruitment age for the Imperial Guard or a PDF? On Cadia, they say the birth rate and recruitment rate are the same thing; similar situations abound in the recruitment of Space Marines. Do they have a high school equivalent, are they indoctrinated daily with Imperial propaganda by Soritas teachers?

I ask these questions because I had an idea for a DH campaign. Partially inspired by the fluff of "Little Fears". The forces of Chaos whisper to all of humanity, not just the grown-ups. What nightmares to the youngest servants of the God-Emperor suffer when the lights go out at night?

Any and all help you could offer would be appreciated.

Well to be honest, it depends on the world/ the worlds owners. i am tired so this may come out wrong

Catachans children only learn how to survive because they live on a death world (probably quite horrifiying so the child may be scared mentally)
kids who live in ultramar will be educated while kids from hive world will be a mix of educated and hivegangers
Indoctrination should be high on most planets to the church
    >> Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)22:49 No.16101348
    Each world is different.

Death worlds will be full of brutal little guys with no time for anything but learning to survive.
Hives generally have spoiled brats at the top, normal kids in the middle with pretty empty childhoods and at the very bottom, children who will grow up to become immoral murderers and gangers.
On agri-worlds, it's likely mostly peaceful - maybe a little lonely due to how wide-spread everything is.
Pleasure worlds are full of spoiled brats.

I could keep on going. In the end, all kids are indoctrinated in faith from the moment they understand language. Even gangers believe in the Emperor.

    Orphans have four fates:
    - Get scooped up by authorities and sent to the nearest Schola Progenium, if there's one in the star system, where they will be ruthlessly trained to be efficient servants of the Imperium.
    - Get dumped in some unofficial orphanage where they will likely grow up with a variety of mental issues and generally be classified as failures.
    - Get adopted and raised by gangs if there are any present in the area, becoming ruthless murderers when they grow up.
    - Death.

OP here, I just came up with a TL;DR: What is the grim darkness of the 41st millennium like through the eyes of a child?
    >> Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)22:56 No.16101434
    >>16101399
Different depending where the child lives. It could be harsh and unforgiving or just a gigantic sandbox for the child to play it. So many different ways to look at it, not every child is raised the same.

Come up with a world, come up with how people would act on that world and how they'd raise their children.
    >> Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)22:59 No.16101487
Depends on the world. I imagine a forgeworld is a bit like it was for kids in the Industrial Revolution.

OP here again. Since it's a DH campaign, let's go with a Hive world in the Calaxis sector. Manufactorum, Mechanicus presence, IG presence, and since this is DH and the Inquisition is involved, a local Chaos cult that may or may not be peddling wares in the form of games.

    >>16101489
I'd imagine apprenticeships are the norm for children in the situation that you describe. One thing that I really like about the Calixis sector is it takes the time to describe all of the non-mechanicus corporations that have control of manufacturing and industrial capabilities. I think any one of these would have some form of in-house apprentice program.
    >> Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)23:05 No.16101541
    >>16101520

What age do you think these apprenticeships start at? And are they in place of school or are they vocational programs done in conjunction with school.
    >> Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)23:09 No.16101576
    >>16101489
On hive worlds, generally most kids can't afford luxuries such as games. It'd mostly be physical stuff at the nearest school, playing ball games, that sort of thing. They'd probably be slightly estranged from their parents who spend most of the time working, not really raising their children and just letting them raise themselves, really.

The children of Adeptus Mechanicus workers would likely have their own private schools where they get taught differently as they are very much their own secluded culture.

Then you might the children of factory-overseers who are showered with various petty gifts, toys and games to keep them occupied while the parents work and they're likely to go to the same sort of school at the rest - while the real upper-class kids get the sort of pampering that we couldn't even imagine, with private tutors shipped in across half the Imperium to teach them.

Then you have scummy gangster kids who would only go to school when it's finishing to rob the kids coming out, although a rare few might socialise with them.

Overall, the castes are pretty firmly seperate in a place like a hive city.
    >> Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)23:11 No.16101596
    >>16101541
You likely have basic government funded schools that contain all of the propaganda and brainwashing of the Eccelsiarchy. The apprenticeships would probably start with puberty.

Okay, this hammers out some social strata. So with this in mind, I want to think briefly from the perspective of a child. What happens when a parent enlists (or is drafted) into the Imperial Guard and is shipped off-world? What happens when a Space Marine shows up at the door and claims that you've been chosen to join a chapter? What happens when a child has an accident, and needs cybernetics?

Obviously, we know what happens in all these situations, but I'm asking for a view from the children's prospective.

"Daddy came home today with a letter, it had a shiny eagle on it, he cried a lot while holding me and mommy really close. He said he was going away, and that Emperor was calling on him to perform his sacred duty. A couple days later he got some funny green clothes with the same eagle on them. Parts of the clothes were hard like rocks. I asked Daddy why and he said they were to keep him safe. I don't think rocks will keep daddy safe. We went to the spaceport with him before he left. Mommy cried a lot while a man with a big hat put daddy on board a ship. Sister Mira at school says daddy is serving in His graces army and that he'll be fighting the enemies of the Emperor, but I said that daddy doesn't fight, he works in a factory. I saw the ship take off and I cried with mommy for a really long time.

    When is daddy coming home?"

It would probably be something just like that. Of course, in some places you can't be *drafted* into the IG. The IG is where the cream of the crop of a planets PDF goes. Of course, that might all go out the window if there's a big war nearby.
    >> Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)23:33 No.16101765
    >>16101723
Impressment gangs happen in the fluff, at the worst a person is grabbed from the street at random. If that's any indication with how much the planetary government cares, their children just became orphans. Which, depending on their age and any other family or local support, may as well be a death sentence.
    >> Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)23:33 No.16101772
    >>16101723
Its called the Imperial Tithe, and its more like a global lottery than a draft. The idea that the Imperial Guard is the 'cream of the crop' isn't true, they take recruits based on percentages of the population. Only Space Marine recruiting and home worlds are exempt from the tithe.
    >> Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)23:34 No.16101785
    >>16101684
Children that get chosen to become Space Marines are usually completely ruthless, battle-hardened gangsters, at least in hive cities. The Adeptus Arbites organise a raid, grab the children and those who meet the exceptionally high standards get sent off for further tests. No other child is likely to become Astartes.

When a parent goes to war, that's it. They disappear, they go off the radar completely. In fact, it's better that the family doesn't hear anything. The only time they're likely to recieve anything is if he dies, then if the corpse is identified, they get sent a telegram with his name pasted on it.

If a situation leaves the child unable to take care of itself, in a hive city it will likely end up in a Schola Progenium institution where they will be mentally and physically forged into perfect servants of the Imperium and go on to be management material, priests of the Eccelsiarchy, stormtroopers and Sisters of Battle. The Schola Progenium is a harsh, cruel institution but the children who go there usually end up with a better future than any other child, except for the spoiled brats of the nobility who inherit riches. Hell, even compared to them, they are guaranteed a more solid future.
    >> Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)23:36 No.16101800
I'm curious, if a child is selected to begin the process of becoming a marine, does the chapter tell his parents, or do they just take the kid and leave the family in the dark?

    >>16101723
Most places are required to adhere to the Imperial Tithe, the name for the Imperium's 'draft'. The only exceptions are Space Marine home world and recruiting planets. And they are taken directly from the civilian population based on percentages, not ability. The idea that the Imperial Guard is made up exclusively of the best of the best from the PDF has no basis in fact.

The Imperial Tithe varies from world to world. Many, many worlds don't have to provide Guardsmen at all. On other worlds, like hiveworlds, there's almost a random lottery. You get picked, you get shipped off for a few years of training and then you get to fight for the Imperium for the rest of your life and when your tour is over, you can either settle down on whatever planet you're currently on, you can sign up for another tour or you can try to somehow raise enough cash to get transport back to your homeworld. The last option is ridiculously unlikely.

Once you sign up for the Imperial Guard, once you're off-world you will never see your homeworld again. The only thing you'll have left of it are the comrades in your regiment from the same planet.

Almost always, they'd be told that their child is destined for something greater. On recruiting worlds where the Space Marines are legendary and have a known presence, they probably get told exactly what is happening.

On other worlds where the Angels of Death are treated like myth, they probably get told it is for a greater cause and they should be proud of their child - then again, they likely get told the same thing if their child is dragged away for being a psyker.

"Whenever I got to bed, I hear these...whispers. They're really, really scary, and they tell me that I can do things with my brain, and that I should do bad stuff with these things. I try not to think about it, but then the whispers get louder and I accidentally made Sister Cadence's recaf cup explode in her face, everyone laughed and didn't know I did it because I kept quiet and sit in the back of the class.

Yesterday a man came to the house. He had a large black hat. He talked to mommy for a while. He asked to talk to me and mommy just looked at me like I was a monster. I didn't like the way that she looked at me, it made me really sad. The man with the hat asked me if I "heard the voices of the warp". He looked really scary but he spoke to me very softly. At first I didn't say anything...but then I told him about the whispers, and the cup, and the time that Jimmy was being mean to me and he burned his arm and there was no fire. Mommy burst into tears and the man with the hat said, "I've heard all I needed to hear."

He said he going to take me with him, that he could take me to people who could make the whispers stop, and who could make me stop doing weird stuff unless I wanted it to happen. I didn't want to go with him, I wanted to stay with mommy. But when I ran to her she backed away like she was afraid of me. She kept crying and crying while the man with the hat led me to his car outside. The car had a capital I and skull on it.

    I never saw mommy again."

Today Sister Benethiel said we had to write a report about one of the emperor's angels. We got to pick which one we revered the most and write a report about him.

Swordsmanship instrutor Carius said the one he revered was Rogal Dorn because he was disciplined.

Faustus, said his was Ferrus mannus, because he did the will of the omnissiah.

But I finally decided to write my report about Leman russ.
Leman russ is a cool primarch. He fought the xenos and the bad traitors because he knew it was the right thing to do. He protected people from all the bad things in the universe.

I wish I could be in the Astartes Just like Leman Russ. Then one day I could get a tank named after me.
It would not be as cool as Leman's, but it would have big guns that made all the xenos blow up, and the emperor would be happy because all the xenos were dead, and he'd tell Mommy while she's at his side that I was the best at killing xenos, just like she was!

    Ave imperator,

I mean, I win most of the time, but my folks really don't like the calls they get from the parents of the kids whose ass I beat. Hey, if they start shit, I'm finishing it end of story. Anyway, there's this really huge-ass dude in robes and he's telling me that "there is a great destiny that's awaiting me on top of the mountain."

This confuses the ever-loving fuck outta me because the only thing on the top of the mountain is that Space Marine monestary or somesuch shit. I say as much to the dude and he says "exactly". All of a sudden it hits me, I'm going to be a fuckin' Space Marine! Fuckin' A! It's just like what happened to my bro Johnny!

Well, I say he's my bro, we're not related, he was a couple years older than me and we just did shit together, fighting, stealing, and stuff, but he got drafted by these guys a couple years ago and I never saw him again. I asked about Johnny and the robed dude said the name was unfamiliar to him or something. That pissed me off, but I know better that to start shit with some fuckhuge dude alone. Especially a fuckhuge Space Marine dude. I asked when I was leaving.

"I think back on the days of my youth. My irreverence, my fear, my doubt in the will of the God-Emperor, my weakness that bore strength all these thoughts occupy my mind but the one that sticks forth is so innocuous seeming that my brothers would mock it if they knew. I think that what kept me going back then was nothing short of the sheer will to live. A desire to stay alive for one simple purpose. My devotion to the God-Emperor is true, but there was another reason for my actions beyond my faith. My thoughts drift to my parents. So proud of me on the day that I was claimed by my soon-to-be brothers. I thought of them and wanted to show them what I had become, I wanted to make them proud once more.

I have just undergone the implantation of the Black Carapace, and we will soon be returning to our home world. I have no doubt my parents are elderly and infirm at this point, it's been many years since I've seen them, but I still want to see the bright smile on their faces, a smile so rare for the hellion I was in my youth.

I just want to see them one more time."

"Fate is a strange mistress. I had learned that my father had been drafted into the Imperial Guard by lottery shortly after my induction into the Astartes, and I took this as a sign of his death. The news filled me with sadness, but I pressed onward and turned my pain into a drive. Many, many years later, after I had earned my Black Carapace and stood upon the world of Geldran V for a pitched battle against an Orkish horde. There was a Guard unit already protecting the planet, and were sent as reinforcements and relief. My group was taken before the colonel in charge of the regiment, his name was announced but it meant nothing to me.

Our last name was common enough in the Imperium for me to write it off as a coincidence, but it appears that Emperor has a thing for funny turns of fate, for a face is something that no one forgets, and for the first time in 40 years, I had come face-to-face with my father.

The sheer impossibility of the circumstance weighed on my mind for only a second before I fell to my knees and held the man in my embrace as tears rolled down my eyes. Despite the changes of the geneseed, he managed to recognize me, and returned the embrace.

He was so small...he towered over me when I left, but now he's so much smaller than me. I've missed him. I've missed him so much."

"I saw one of the rich kids throw out one of those brand new game device's because, and I quote, "the stupid thing broke!". Had I not possessed my augmented hearing, I would have not heard his statement. Had he not tossed it out of a window of a moving vehicle, he would have faced the justice of the Omnisiah then and there. But alas, he was gone and the smashed device lay at red-robed feet. I took the device home and told my father and mother all of this. They told me that I should practice my rights of repair upon the device. I did, and the machine spirit became happy again. I play with it every day to let the machine spirit know it is loved.

I encountered the rich kid a few days later while playing with the game device. My father had predicted this and prepared me for this. The kid demanded his device back, my Luminen Shock said no.

    thats ridiculously cheesy.

but seeing a space marine hugging a colonel would be hilarious.

2 things that would make this suck.
    1. the colonel is the leader of the traitor guardsmen who are trying to take over the planet.
    2. the guard regiment has just been ordered to commit to a suicidal attack to give the space marines an opening they can exploit. Life expectancy of the regiment practically being nil.

though being a colonel then he probably knows a thing or two about surviving in the imperial guard.

Probably have upper classes who try their best to breed naturally, while the lower classes are likely just pumped out of vitae wombs, which I believe is the fate that awaits every girl born from them.

Since cloning is illegal, the closest they get to it is the artificial insemination of comatose women modified to be little more than mass production wombs.

No, Dead Men Walking described blank-eyed women, mostly pregnant, and blank-eyed children in bunkers.
The Vitae Wombs are only supplementary procedures.
Classes mean little on Krieg, because every man either fights and dies or is a failure. Those unhappy few that don't become Guardsmen are the ones that make new Guardsmen.

There was a lot of noise.

Mommy said that bad men were coming, and that we had to get out of the house. I only had time to get my boots on and grab Gabe before the screams started rushing past our door.

I remember mommy running with the crowd, and holding me really close. She was talkin' to the Emperor and asking him to watch over me, and to deliver us to something. People started falling; mommy told me to keep quiet when I wanted to help them up. She told me not to look back, but I had to to make sure Gabe was okay after getting bumped. I saw big men that looked like Gabe... but not like him. They were spiky and scary and it hurt my head to look at them. They were screaming really loud, and into my head, but Gabe protected me and mommy, and we managed to get ahead with some people from the block. We ran around corners, and took alleys, and all the shortcuts that mommy had to learn at work, but there were always more and more spiky Gabes around the corner.

Some of the spiky Gabes came through a wall, and tried to grab me and my mommy. They missed, her shoulders, but knocked us to the ground. Mommy screamed at me to run away. All I could do was hold Gabe close and ask him for help. There was a click, a flash of light, and then a bang.

When the world stopped ringing, the spiky Gabes were all broken. Mommy was still crying, but now she seemed happier. She thanked the Emperor for his blessing. I thanked Gabe for calling his big brothers in to help my mommy.

Well, many regiments are raised from a single world, right? And they go back to that world for new recruits when numbers get low, right?

It seems to me that a guy who's tour of duty is done could just wait around or transfer to a ship that's heading back to Valhalla or Praetoria or whatever for a new batch of cannon fodder. The imperium are dicks, sure, but I would think the guard would be willing to transport "technically-retired" guardsmen on recruiting ships, especially since those have to be near-empty anyways.

I mean, it's still grimdark. how long is a tour of duty? 10 years? 20? 30? "Until we're done" (never)? Best-case scenario, a guy comes back to find his infant child a snotty teenager, his wife re-married, and all his friends dead in an industrial accident. Many/most guardsmen would elect to just stay on whatever planet they've just passified.

    Could be...
In a setting where souls and psychic phenomena and whatnot exist, trying to clone off a couple dozen of the same guy in close proximity to eachother might not be the best idea ever, even if you don't speed-grow them. They're liable to come out talking in unison like creepy twins, or just batshit crazy from all the impinging thoughts. That makes sense, at least.

plus, it could also be retarded ideas about clones not having souls, because writers are morons.

which is still not genetic drift.

If you live on a water world, and over a hundred generations the webbing between fingers expands and lung capacity increases. That's not a mutant, that's abhuman.

If your child is suddenly born with a third eye, that's a mutant.

generally, I think of chaos mutations as being somehow...fucked up. not making any developmental sense at all, like wagging tongues or blinking eyes on random parts of the body. Whereas Mutations are things like a hunched spine with ridges and shit, or fangs, or quills.

    I always wondered about this:

"Where do Chaos Marines get their stuff from?".

I usually concluded that the servants of the Dark Gods made raids on Imperial worlds, taking arms, munitions and slaves (workforce and "food").

This idea of an isolated human world used by one of the four is an intriguing one, left to their own devices and instructed to make ammo, tanks and guns or grow crops, or even provide a steady stream of recruits to be used as sorceress fuel, or food or potential neophytes for the Traitor Marines? Perhaps they still think they are serving the Imperium?

While I was tailing him, I saw Jakes dad who looked a kind of lopsided, inside the meeting place I saw something horrible, they were worshiping monsters! Some were even turning into them! Jake's dad was growing a third arm! So, I ran to Sally and told her what I saw, she said that I need to tell her mom right away, her mom was apparently the her clubs leader, inside the meeting place of Sally's club, there were pictures of naked people doing "things" and symbols that hurt my eyes everywhere, but nothing could be as bad as turning into those monsters, right?

Being recruited into the space marines isn't like taking the SAT's. You have to pass a ridiculously insane and dangerous challenge just to be considered for the series of challenges to become a space marine. Though the manner differs between chapters, some hold deathmatches, others have contests, the ultras have boarding schools, etc. The only unifying theme is that they are all, as previously said, insanely dangerous, and the contestants are all children between the ages of 10 and sixteen. So your either have to win an IRL Unreal Tournament at the age of eleven, or you have to slay a monster or some shit.

pic related: your average Space Marine aspirant.

Depending on the world, anyone who shows particular ability or skill would be shipped off to the scholastic schools where you'd become a servant of the emperor.

It latched on almost instantly, and it sucked the life out of him in seconds. I should feel bad about this, but I don't. He's the third kid we've lost since the beginning of the year, and uncle says there'll only be more. He says this because he's taught many children on Catachan and he says he was even in the Imperial Guard. I want to join the Imperial Guard when I grow older. Anywhere is better than here."

"Some would say that I was unfortunate to be born on a black ship bound for Terra. Some would say that it's even more unfortunate to be a child of two psykers. But whatever liaison's my parents underwent in secret matter not, for they have only produced one indiscernible fact that fact is myself. By rite of lineage, I am a powerful psyker for my age, powerful enough to feel the messages and thoughts move past in the Emperyan, it's only natural that I was selected to become an Astropath."

"Today is my birthday, I am twelve years old, and I am youngest person about to stand before the Emperor himself and undergo an ancient rite that I have spent the entirety of my short life preparing for, a rite that will probably kill me, and if it does not kill me, will scar me for life in the most horrible of ways.

Why do I do this, you ask? Because I was born with the Immaterium raging through my skull non-stop every day of my life. The whispers that haunt others are not whispers to me, they are loud voices that shout down at me. And I have learned to shout back. This rite, successful or not, is going to give me a chance to see rather than just hear, and in the Emperor's name, I am ready."

    OP here. Again.

All I needed to hear. I'll set to work at once. Thank you all for this thread, it has given me a boatload of ideas. I'm formulating the campaign I created this thread right now. Let's just say that to tackle a problem with the youth, the Inquisition will need to fight at their level, and yes, that means child Acolytes. Like I said, "Little Fears" was an inspiration behind this.

As for the story at >>16102219, and as promised in >>16118985, I will set to work at once. Once again, thank you all. /tg/ gets shit done indeed.
