We can't really evaluate fantasy animals with our own real world evolutionary charts. Where would a Beholder go to? Is it a mammal (does lady Beholder a big breast floating around?), a reptile, bird, insect, or what?
Remember, prior to Darwin and friends, for all people knew, animals spawned from holes in the ground. Fantasy is bound with mythology, not science. It's the realm where you can fuck Mother Earth and make shit appear (doesn't homunculus myth require sperm to be planted like plant seeds?), or have your nubile maiden virginity taken by the harsh seas, and summon a race of sea people from your vagina. Zeus, an Olympian and the descendant of the Titans, had sex with humans in animal form, and fostered babies! Super babies!
Where's your science now?
I don't mind a setting taking a turn from the Science Express, and all I care about is that it'll stay true to its own logic and world rules. But then again, having shit like wizard cleave a bear in half with a stick (thanks critical hit charts) or dwarf being so stubborn that it defies the laws of gravity, are just so much fun that sometimes we must forget "realism" and "science", and just fuck around a bit. |
