We have more humane instruments, what you suggest is indentured labor. The worst problem with that people in power can easily make it so that it's almost unavoidable, leading to general deterioration of the job market, since a slave is cheaper than properly paid worker. Slavery is not only immoral, but highly dangerous from purely economical perspective.

Which makes the economical value of a slave compared to a free man effectively nil. Which means no one would agree to take a slave in return for debt erasure. Making the system pointless. If you diluted the laws enough to make a slave worthwile, you're having the same problem as before- a slave is so much cheaper (not to mention kept in shitty conditions...) that it's always a better choice than a free man.
