    General RoS, and possibly deathmatches.

Started to get really interested in this game after seeing these threads. Found the core rulebook online just have to sit down and read it!

I want to see the knife fight broken down, that one sounds fun.
Or a greatsword vs. a polearm, like a halbred.
Or a really skilled unarmed fighter going up against a knife weilding thug of some kind.

How does ranged combat work in RoS anyway? Is it just as horrifying as melee?

Ranged combat is mixed. The Flower of Battle (I think that was it, might be companion) fixes a lot of its flaws, but in the core rules it's not good at all.

Arbalests are, thankfully, the most broken shit around. You can kill ANYONE with an arbalest.

Now, on the subject of a fight, I just got home from a hassle, I'm going to make a cup noodle and a shot or two. I'm down for any and everything though, my night's all clear and I want blood as much as you guys. If you can come to a decision (yes, even the bear-rapist above), I'll follow through with it.

Ranged combat in RoS is at best, ok.

The problem is that with RoS being realistic, trying to use ranged weapons most of the time is a bad idea. Also, with how long ranged combat takes, it can be horrible.

Though I forget, didn't they release better rules for ranged combat?

Yeah. They added rules for using ranged weapons in melee (which is mostly for guns and hand crossbows) and they also switched some stuff around so that it's less open-shut and so that your AIM score was actually good for something. Quicker shooting and stuff.

With Flower of battle rules, it's not so much that it's useless, it's just something that doesn't mesh well with melee, which is 90% of the game's focus.

Like a solo campaign with a woodsmen would be a good game, or at least something where all the characters have good reasons to stay at range.

But the real problem is that ranged weapons are kind of impractical on a singular scale, just like in real life.

I've actually been slowly re-writing the game to include the better of the Companion and FoB material as part of the core book. It's a pet project of mine. As of yet though, it is insufficient for your (or anyone's) needs.

So, I'm thinking maybe a more mundane setup would be a good way to start. I want to see the Bear break someone's bones all to bits too, granted, but we need a warmup first. Something to cleanse the palate.

Now, what have we for proposals...

    Knife vs Knife

    Knife vs Unarmed

Poleaxe vs Plate-Knife? That's madness. Maybe good madness.

Or we could go back to the other combatants from yesterday's match.

Personally I'm leaning towards knife on knife because it's simple and sweet. And I dread doing the grappling monster first. What say you lot?

The Stiletto that Mycah, our burly Italian fellow, is using here is a strange weapon.
Thrusting ATN of 5, nonexistant cut ATN, and Str-2 damage.

Obviously it relies heavily on successes to kill. It also defends awfully against anything that isn't a light thrusting weapon or another dagger. Dodging is advisable.

Broad daggers are different stories. They're better on the thrust than the cut, yet they have the potential to do enormous cutting damage. Defense... Perhaps unlikely.

However, attempting to parry with their arms is totally on the table, it just isn't terribly advisable.

So, our boy Skittles has a brutish cutting weapon. To be honest, I would've given him a kukri if I hadn't seen that it used the sword & shield proficiency for some retarded reason.

Desperate, he leaps out of the bath, and grabs his letter opener-eh, Stiletto dagger!

Unfortunately, Grapple has an activation cost, and buying the initiative is already expensive, however:

Skittles will buy the initiative, and find to his shock that Mycah's Perception (and thus his cost) is only 4. He uses 2 more dice to raise Mycah's TN by 2 to 7 (Reflex+2) and now, the opposed rolls begin.

Skittles' 5 WP at difficulty 5
    Mycah's 7 Wit at difficulty 7.

WHO IS DEADLIEST? I'm not gonna roll, this is too crucial, this one's on you guys. Whoever wins this goes first, and had better kill the other guy.

If Mycah goes first, he's got 10 dice to defenseless Skittles' chest.
If Skittles goes first, he's got 2 to Mycah's groin.

It looks like Mycah hits first. But because he is fairly certain he has already won, he will only thrust with 5, and keep another 5 ready to try and buy back the initiative in case Skittles tries just this.
Sadly, he finds out too late that Skittles' Per is huge, so that 5 must sit there and do nothing until the defense stage.

So, Richtofen here has a hauberk (which covers everything from the shoulders to the lower arms, and to the upper thighs) as well as a decent sized shield and a spiked mace.

Spiked maces kind of kick ass. They cause automatic bloodloss, regardless of where they hit. That's a pretty big deal. Richtofen also has fucking enormous WP, which means he can just soak up damage like nobody's business, and then dish out retaliation like a boss.

Indeed, and on THAT subject sirs: Cesare The Spider.

You see, Cesare here has been playing this game for a while. He's one of the more experienced fighters in my collection, and thus, he knows how to stay alive on a Riddle of Steel Battlefield.

And how you stay alive, sir, is wearing a codpiece at all times. The largest, most protective one you can.

He's also got a Poleaxe, which is a fucking awesome weapon. Its DTN of 6 is great, and because Cesare has a Traditional school, his effective Proficiency of 12 with the Poleaxe also allows him to perform Master Strikes, which could be decisive in a pinch.
Strike ATN 7, Thrusting ATN 8, Cut Piercing AND Bludgeoning damage. It's gonna be a fun night.

So, a thug with a mace versus a professional duelist with a fantastic codpiece?

    WHO.

    Alright!

The Spider is attempting to teach his class of spoiled noble kids how to kill a man with a poleaxe. This is the equivalent of Bas Rutten trying to teach a sunday school class how to kill a man with a bearclaw knife in a barfight.

Suddenly, there is an ominous sound. A deep sound. A sinister sound. A German sound.

Cesare turns about to see a man whose ale he (ALLEGEDLY) pissed in at the common house last night. The man has the colors of a rival school, and a spiked mace.

Oh no, a fight's out! The Spider urges his students to stand back and try not to be heroes, but they've already run away. Damn kids.

Cesare doesn't have his gauntlets or chausses, just the leather underparts, so he's vulnerable.

Richtofen is clearly set on blood. What should Cesare do? Red, or Blue?

    Truth and Truth both!

Cesare throws red, and Rickshaw throws blue.

The Spider has a pool of 18, and because the Spiked Mace is Short, he knows that he's got TWO steps of reach on Rickshaw. He'll spend 2 dice to throw a Beat at 14 on Rickshaw's Shield.

Now Rickshaw had been planning on putting 10 or so on a block, and then tapping Cesare with 5 on the leg, but suddenly, things are looking a lot worse.
Getting hit with a Beat SUCKS. If he messes this up, Cesare will destroy his Combat Pool. What should he do?

Attack action, batters a weapon or shield to the side. If successful, you cannot employ it in defense on the following exchange. If you beat aside a longer weapon, your range penalty is also cut in half, making it a GREAT option for when you're outreached.

Basically, Cesare makes an attack, which the other guy can parry as normal.
However. The attack isn't at the guy himself, it's at the guy's equipment. Success causes an automatic 2 points of shock damage for every success over the first, and beats away the weapon or shield that you target, preventing it from being used to attack or defend in the next exchange.

The potential for causing enormous amounts of shock damage is wonderful, and it can only be done on the first turn of combat. Cesare is relying on his reach and the scare factor of this attack to keep Rickshaw from trying to buy the initiative.

A man doesn't get Proficiency 10+2 and a Black Russian without knowing when to run away.

Cesare flees, reminding himself to train in chausses from now on, leaving the School's other Provosts to restrain the German (or die trying) while he finds the Master.

Did one of these fights just end without a fatality? I'm shocked.
    >> Anonymous 08/20/11(Sat)06:40 No.16001158
i dont think either would really want to continue really. ones just standing and the other is bleeding alot and quite brused
    >> John Galt 08/20/11(Sat)06:41 No.16001163
So... However many men represent my audience. Should we leave it there for tonight, or do you still thirst for carnage?

(Someday, incidentally, we'll have to do a rematch of these two. Cesare in full gear, Richtofen less drunk.)

If you still hunger, we could make another thread. Or we could leave the bloodshed for another day, and end on the happy note of a cautionary tale of chausses and greaves.

Ahhh, that was a really intense fight. Even the almighty Pollaxe can sometimes find itself in a severe pickle should the dice turn sour.

Some things I'd like to see in future threads like this:

Unarmed combat, fist to fist, grapple to grapple!
Two dandies duking it out with smallswords or rapiers
The Mad Arab who is pissed off about the Crusades and mistakes a Landsknecht for a Crusader Knight.

I'm done for tonight, but if people want to keep on truckin', I just hope you archive it on easymodo or sup/tg/ or whatever.

I'm feeling it as well. This was an incredibly protracted affair.

I wouldn't mind continuing, but we've just driven two threads to autosage. Two is enough. Whenever the next time though I hope I'm there. We still owe someone a Bearfight.

So it shall be. Gentlemen, THIS was a triumph. A jolly good show.

I'll see you all when I see you. Farewell.

    Amen to that.

...One other thing that might be interesting (and quite possibly rather quicker than these full-armored melee contests)? A pistol duel.

I am quite sated from tonights bloodshed. I lol'ed quite heartily at Skittles v. Mycah, but was somewhat disappointed nobody ended up with a shattered groin in either bout.

I need sleep though, so I vote further bloodshed be postponed.
Also, we must see The Bear break some poor sod bone by bone.

I shall put my mind to making both of these humble wishes come true.
But for now... King of Dragon Pass beckons. Been torrenting it ever since I got home.

Thanks for the threads, Johnny-Boyo. It was so entertaining I had to go as far as to de-lurk for a moment, and post my appreciation.

Maybe we can have a drunken Finn with a knife versus a bear next time.

It looks like he ran, but yes, normally he'd be allowed to do that since it's back to initiative.
