    >Sorry about Thursday, manager forced a close on me and I wasnt home till nearly midnight server time

When morning finally does arrive, the central command tent is properly filled, commanders, aides and scouts all gathered around the central table. Both Captain Corinth, and one of Gabriels scouts seem to be the ones with information, and when signalled to begin their report in the eerie filtered sunrise light in the tent, they deliver what is expected. "Our foes seem to be halving their remaining forces. Most of the remaining mercenaries they hid on their march to us with the two more conventional units, the bulk of their cavalry in a third, and a large force of light infantry in the fourth."

The other man leaves no gap for interruption, and adds "Enemy scouts and infiltrators are stepping up their attempts to get to our camp as well. ALsmost all of the scouting parties and outriders are in constant or near constant combat."

The Malcius groans "Why is it that I have this sinking suspicion that our foes will be playing to our individual weaknesses more than usual in this battle?"

Salvius shakes his head "Because they are dividing their forces in such a manner as to telegraph their intent."

Gabriel stretches as a lightning-bolt strikes the ground in the distance, illuminating the tent by enough for it to seem late morning in the tent, as opposed to just before dawn "And if we do not play their game, the cavalry force will be free to ravage one of our own forces, and Degnarians are not half so cheap as Uurlanthi"

Has Blackbird been able to come back with more information, or is this what we have to work on?

    >>15773322
Indeed. Do we have rough numbers on the size of each of these forces? Or at least how many units are left amongst the cavalry or light infantry?
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 07/31/11(Sun)22:00 No.15773503
Sighing you ask "Do we have any further information on enemy numbers or force compisitions?"

As the thunder accompanying Gabriels last statement finally arrives, the scout not under your command replies "With the increase in activity of enemy scouts and outriders we have been unable to get accurate counts on enemy numbers."

Corinth clears his throat "The force of mostly light infantry is roughly the size of the force you dealt with on its first engagement, and flew mostly Scorpion banners. the two more traditional forces were of size, perhaps a bit larger than each of our own maniples, and the cavalry was 8, perhaps 9 wings of nights and elven light cavalry."

Gabriel groans "So long as the cavalry does not fall to my force... we have no equipment to deal with them properly."

Salvius nods in agreement "If Justinian and Malcius take no offense, I will volunteer to deal with the light infantry force, the heavier mercenaries and medium infantry of the other forces would prove problematic for my own."

I think we're going to have to take on the cavalry force based on the fact Gabriel and Salvius can't really do it. As well, Malcius has a balanced maniple like us but we have the repeaters and our aerial units. I don't know how anyone else will be able to take them on better than us unfortunately.
    >> GoldPanda 07/31/11(Sun)22:09 No.15773578
Aye. Volunteer to take on the cavalry force. We are also the fastest maniple, and the one with the best chance to actually catch up to them and force them into battle.

True, how bad is the terrain in general? If we're just as slow as the other maniples than... That doesn't really change anything now that I think about it. Only two of us can really deal with the cavalry and I'd say it's us over Malcius. I think we're stuck with the cavalry.

    Seconding anti-cav role.

Our skills and powers are uniquely suited to taking them out.

Hopefully we'll find that noble with them and take him out.

Did Blackbird deliver our ice elementalist payload?
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 07/31/11(Sun)22:23 No.15773728
You sigh "I will deal with the cavalry force, with this continuing rain, it should be a quick affair with all the rain of late."

The other commanders chuckle, and Malcius drops a dragoon in a bowl at the center of the table and states "Gabriel and I will deal with the traditional forces then."

The dwarf glances at you, and inclines his head at the bowl, which you begrudgingly feed... the rain comment was quite obvious "Hopefully Justinian and I will be able to finish our battles quickly, and roll up the flanks of the forces Malcius and Vibius will be fighting."

The turban-clad man shakes his head "I doubt our foes will let it be so easy. they may even attempt to lure one of our maniples out of position with the cavalry so that they can do the same to us."

You glare at the man, before stating "The lordling in command has proven to be adaptive and intelligent. I would be surprised if he did not."

as Vibius adds a coin, Gabriel asks "How do we deal with the potential mobility of the cavalry wing then? Between elementalists and mages they could easily negate the negative effects of the weather on their own cavalry."
    >> Maximus 07/31/11(Sun)22:31 No.15773847
    >>15773728
"My own elementalists can hopefully do the same for my maniple so I can keep up with them. Since I'll likely be on the move, I'll leave Blackbird behind. He might not be able to deal with the cavalry's mobility but he can delay any flanking forces that attempt to hit you."

I'd consider the Lacerta's we have too but I don't know if we have enough units to deal with all that cavalry... Also let's make sure we have our units bring spears. Even if it's only enough for the front two ranks to have. I imagine we have lots from the dead Uurlanth and this way our units can have SOME defense against cavalry charges.

Please stay in defensive positions. Let the enemy come to you. If anyone will be trying to break through our lines, it will be the cavalry."

You sigh "I will keep my maniple as mounted as possible. With luck we will be able to keep pace with and intercept the enemy cavalry wing before they can hit our lines. Stay defensively deployed and I will quickly deal with the threat."

The others nod, and Gabriel leans back into his chair lazily "Justinain, do you think it would be possible for you to loan me your fire elementalists, as a third of my maniple is nowhere near the state they should be in with this rain and mud. It is still hot more often than not, but the moisture..."

And while we are on the topic of shared assets, our aerial cavalry," Vibius adds "do we risk it?" as he straightens his turban and leans back into his seat as well.

Malcius shakes his head "Between the storm, and the chances of another lord sending his own aeiral cavalry in search of glory or to humiliate the Desert Lords, I would rather hold them secure."

Still thinking we should leave Blackbird behind at least. He won't do us much in non-prepared terrain against cavalry compared to what he could do against the infantry.

"I suggest we keep our aerial units grounded. They can help secure the camp and ensure no infiltrators make it to our camp unmolested. I rather not risk such valuable units on something that could kill them even if they didn't get near combat."

I also think we should lend them the fire elementalists. Even if it's just the non-named ones.

I'm against leaving Blackbird behind or with the other commanders. No one has asked for him, and he's just too damn useful against cavalry.

I'm for leaving Laelith and other fire elementalists with Gabriel. I believe we can spare her firepower. We don't need complications from the other commanders during the battle. This also makes us look good on the reports later.

I'm also for giving our non-legionary units some looted spears, just in case they have to receive a cavalry charge.

Guys, we have those arcana cloaks (3) that are designed to hide people in muddy terrain.

confirmed in irc that they will work in THIS terrain/condition mix.

Who wants a mental image of some poor uurlanthi noble/elementalist/arcanist suddenly finding Blackbird inches from them, a toothy grin on his face as his blades fall?
    >> Maximus 07/31/11(Sun)23:06 No.15774267
    >>15774203
Blackbird is useful against cavalry but only on prepared terrain with traps. If we're chasing cavalry, it's not likely we're going to get to trap the terrain to our satisfaction. Hence why I figured he'd do much more damage to the infantry with his traps and the sheer terror he causes when he appears.

And yes I am again suggesting we give the men at least some spears for some defense against a cavalry charge. Even two ranks of men with spears would make a huge difference.

You pause too think before nodding your ascent to Malcius and turning to face Gabriel "Yes, you may have the use of my fire elementalists."

Vibius looks to Gabriel before adding "I agree with Justinian and Malcius that our aerial assets should remain grounded." he pauses to look over the most recent estimates of enemy outriders before adding "The number of scouts they are using makes me quite nervous, I fear that-"

Before the man can voice his opinion fully, the rapid stutter of signal rings being fired to raise an alarm, soon followed by the blaring of horns cuts the man off.

All ten inhabitants of the tent step out, to see a scene of utter chaos. All throughout your camp, mostly from the mess tents and around the camp followers tents men are lashing out with once hidden blades. Already a few groups have formed, one headed for the medicae tents, another for the central command tents. To the east, sprinting through the rain is Aurelius' scouting party, he, Bellatrix and 8 others hounded by double the amount of what are most certainly Uurlanths earliest answer to Blackbird, and a single... creature. Sansa draws her blades in the blink of an eye, and the otehr commanders and their aides are doing the same "Command me, my love, and I will halt one of these infiltrator cells where they stand."

You wince as a pair of groups of infiltrators suddenly form, mere steps away from the camps supply tents. You swear, loudly, and are echoed by Gabriels "That something like this was bound to happen." he pauses as another group of your scouts, this one his, show up to the north, its situation similar to Aurelius' troupes. "Shintjas blackened shriveled cunt, I should have voiced my fears that our scouts were simply being toyed with weeks ago."

Malcius sighs, flourishing his blade "And it would have done no good save try our nerves until this very moment had you done so."

"The Medicae, I will deal with the ones headed for our supplies." you command your aide, and as quick as that, she is off, her face set in grim determination.

"I will fight with you then, Justinian." Malcius informs you, drawing a shortsword and a hand-crossbow. Vibius draws his twin khopesh and moves to follow you.

Feeling more than a little guilty about leaving Aurelius and Bellatrix to their fate, you steal a glance at the group accosting them. The beast, you realize much to your chagrin, is a necromantic construct. Its legs those of a destrier, but much thicker at the ankles, its torso a gryphons, its arms and head human, from its wrists sprout strange talon-like hands, each of them clearly a fusion of two velociprey feet, joints added and some of the thick, stubbyness removed. From the arcane sutures a sickly green arcane mist flows, its hollow eyes weeping putrid green gasses, it human face screaming out in pain and rage, audible even this far from the 8 foot tall behemoth.

Undaunted Bellatrix charges the beast, catching its wrathful swipes on her shield and deftly sidestepping its powerful kicks. She lashes out at the beast, and every strike opens a gaping wound for but a moment, with a gout of pus and blood shooting forth... until the gas covers and heals the wound.

As you see Aurelius become rapidly surrounded, trying desperately to defend himself with his longknife, and just barely avoiding recieving any killing blows, you lash out at the further group of infiltrators moving for your supply tents. "KEEP THEM SEPERATE!!!!!" you bellow to any Degnarian who may hear you, as all but two of the group is impaled on vicious spikes of clay and earth... though your voice is barely audible above the din.

You steal a glance over to the medicae tent, where Sansa is gracefully wading into a group of infiltrators, each motion calculated death. As Vibius armored aide wades in to your concubines right, a pained, familiar cry draws your attention for a second, and you crane your neck to see a blade run through Aurelius' leg, though he quickly dispatches the man who put it there, you feel your worry for him deepen as you approach your own target.

As Sansa continues to scythe through her infiltrators, her platemail-clad shadow finishing those she simply wounded, or binding those that are likely to live, you hit you own foes. Your first strike cleaves a head from a body, as Vibius severs an arm, and two legs from another infiltrator, and Malcius' puts a bolt throught he head of another. You continue onwards to disembowel the next nearest infinltrator, looking up as the wretch screams in agony.

What you see does not hearten you. The Flesh Golem Bellatrix is dueling shears the top half of the womans shield off with a single swipe of its claw, and shatters the rest with a powerful kick, sending the woman sprawling. Aurelius screams in rage, and lunges towards his prone lover, slashing through Uurlanthi scouts, killing few, but maiming or wounding many.

You silently thank Kyrias boundless enthusiam as the Kharynchek woman risers, clearing the leather straps of her backup shield from her arm, and centering herself for more fighting, casually decapitating an approaching uurlanthi scout as she begins to pace the massive brute she is locked in combat with.

a sharp clak brings you back to the present as Malcius cocks his handbow back on the first in a series of strange hooks on his armor, catching an onrushing infiltrators blade a second after doing so with his short-sword. To your right Vibius plants his foot in the chest of another infiltrator, and severs the fools head with both of his khopesh before the corpses knees even touch the ground.

Further off to your right, you see Autronius, Lena, Gaius and Cornelius wading through the camp followers tents, killing those resting there seemingly at random, though you know your mystic is guiding their hand.

You continue to press forward, severing one infiltrator at the waist, as Malcius disarms the infiltrator accosting him with powerful downward sweep, finishes reloading his handbow, and fires it into the mans chest in a single motion. You attempt to impale the last two infiltrators on earthen spikes, but miss both. One of the remaining infiltrators backs into the spike that had been intended to impale him, and is quickly slain by Vibius. Raging, you attempt to impale the last one again, and again, you miss your mark, the resulting spike connecting and curving them, before it continues upwards, forming what caould be fairly easily recognized as a large, fork, thrust into the ground. Vibius laughs "clever, my frined, but now is not the time to indulge in the arts." as he throws his off-hand khopesh, sending the blade wheeling end over end at the surviving, fleeing infiltrator, who ends facedown in the mud, a khopesh protruding from his back.

At the same time, Sansa leaps into the air, seemingly freezing mid-rotation as a flourish of bolts and blades fly past her, before she lands amongst what was soon to become another group of gathered infiltrators, swiftly dispatching most of them.

Across the field, only Aurelius and Bellatrix remain, against 8 Uurlanthi scouts, and the Flesh Golem. Aurelius is again bogged down amongst his numerous foes, unable to make any real progress towards his love, though his foes are unable to harm him further either.

Bellatrix, on the other hand, has launched into a full and furious offensive, slashing and stabbing at the beast with her saber. For every gash she buries into the beast, however, she has to dodge out of her offensive rhythm at least three times, as the abominations unnatural speed, and tireless form begin to wear on the woman, though, the gashes she inflicts are beginning to stay longer.

Grunting, you sprint over to the other two infiltrators, barely being held back by the sleepy guards in front of your food stores, you swiftly dispatch one, and immobilize the other. Not even thinking you pivot on your foot, and lash out with a wave of earthen spikes, impaling three of Aurelius' attackers, and preventing one from severing his overly well maintained head from his shoulders, the last spike in the row going straight through the leg of the abomination Bellatrix is facing down.

The Captain pivots about, hoping to open one of his foes necks, but only recieves a deep gash down his cheek for the effort. he stumbles back, passing through the earthen spikes, allwoing himself time to collect himself and prepare to be attacked again.

as you set off towards the pair, Bellatrix capitalizes on the immobilized state of the abomination, and buries her blade deep in its gut. The thing roars in pain, its needle-like teeth visibly dripping a foul purplish mucus. The brute surges forward, slashing at Bellatrix, who barely has time to step to the side, pulling her blade free, and spilling entrails and arcane mists as she does so. After that, however, the rage of her foes keeps her on the defensive, as the monster advances, always snapping, swiping and kicking at her, though seldom, if ever connecting.

"Support Autronius!!!" You bellow again, this time your voice easily cutting through the din. You raise a quartet of stone arrows from the mud, and launch them at the flesh golem. Again it howls, freezing in its place to do so as the heavy projectiles dig into its slowly decaying flesh. The wounds weep pus and maggots, chunks of rotten flesh and noxious gasses, but the opening is enough. Bellatrix darts forwards, and severs the abominations right had, though its retaliatory strike tears her blade from her hand, and sends it flying several feet to the womans right.

Finally, you reach the men accosting Aurelius, as the rest of the camp falls more and more into order, as the infiltrators are rooted out and slain. You sever a head, and an arm in one sweep, open a gut with another, and shatter a windpipe as you draw your blade from the second man in this group lain low by your swords gut. Aurelius collects himself and leaps forward, lashing out with his knife more like it were some claw he had grown than a weapon. He tears out a windpipe, and opens another mans gut, despite the blood pouring from your captains leg and face. With only a handful of assassins and the abomination left, the fight seems to freeze for a moment, as the survivors on both sides size each other up.

You lunge at your opponent at the same second Bellatrix dives for her blade. As your blade sinks deep into the gut of your foe, Bellatrix is forced to roll to her side, as a furious hooved foot comes crashing down where her head was seconds ago. As you pull your ferreted blade back, entrails clinging to its edges, Aurelius receives another wound, this one to his left shoulder. He spins away, snapping the blade off in his arm, spilling the man to the ground as he clenches the limb in pain. Calmly you stride ahead, and sever both of the remaining assassins arms as he moves to draw his next blade. Seconds later, as Bellatrixs stomach is cut in four places as again, she barely manages to roll away from what would have otherwise been a killing blow. On your follow-through swing, you behead the assassin.

You lash out at the beast with earthen spikes, only to miss, as Bellatrixs prone dodging nearly brings her in line with the path of your spikes, though her stopping herself from impaling herself on your spikes does save her from having her leg shattered by a stomp that pulped the last spike in your row.

    >since I missed without warning thursday, I'll give you a second botch

Roaring, you charge the beast. Your first blow digs into its flesh, causing it to whirl around and kick your shield from your hand, further deforming the poor thing. Behind the beast Bellatrix grabs her saber and rushes the beast. Unfortunately for her, seconds before she connects with the beast again, you bombard its head with rocks shorn from the ground. The beast picots about, and seeing Bellatrix, immidiately sets itself into motion. Time seams to slow as you trace the monsters claws trajectory with your mind, into, and through Bellatrix's gut.

Seconds before impact, however, a streak of crimson and blackish brown intercepts the claw, a glint of steely silver slashing across the mashed-together claw, splitting it in twain before a very human wail of pain erupts from the blur, and you see Aurelius on the ground where the blur stopped, a sizeable chunk of his right shoulder missing, his left shoulder contorted out of position. The beasts balance however, is completely ruined, though it still refuses to go down peacefully, sinking its teeth into Bellatrixs shield-arms shoulder. As it begins to shred down her arm, however, another blur, this one pale-flesh and deep gray impacts the beasts shoulder.

    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 08/01/11(Mon)02:14 No.15776135
The blur freezes for long enough for you to see Laeliths sickle in position to sever the beasts other hand, before she leaps from its falling shoulder, severing its hand as she knocks its head free of Bellatrix's arm with her Arcane Torch. In mid-air, the elf spins about, levels her torch... and spews forth a great gout of flame, orange-white magical flame, not the greenish hue of consecrated flame, but flame nonetheless. Before your concubines reaches the ground, all of the flesh is seared from the creatures mismatched bones. When you scatter the bones apart, any hope the necromancers magics may have had of regenerating the beast are ruined, and a brief flicker of greenish-silver energy can be seen flickering across the things.

As you stand panting, triumphant over your foes most recent attempt to pass around your camp, you look to the east to taunt the dogs on their latest failure. However, your witticisms die on your lips, as the unmistakeable silhouette of four armies approaching at wide angles is readily visible. All four of them rapidly approaching.

"Laelith, see Aurelius and Bellatrix to the medicae tent." You order, quickly calming yourself. You fire off your signal ring, first the signal code for a general call to arms again, and then to call your maniple to you.

"Crestus and the life elementalists should be able to replace the lost flesh, provided our symbiotic friend does not make any mistakes with the saps he secretes for the doctors." Laelith informs you, as she helps Bellatrix to her feet, and the tow of them lift up the unconscious Aurelius and begin moving him to the tent. You reach out with your stonesense as the rainstorms ferocity increases.

"Stinking, diseased, dragoncocks simply wont let us enjoy our victory, will they?" Malcius asks as he steps up beside you.

"Victory?" Gabriel asks "That mission accomplished exactly what they wanted it too, lowered our troops morale, and threw us into disaray directly before a battle. They choose both the time, and field of engagement now."

You take a steadying breath as Vibius approaches, and inform the others "Cavalry to the north, then the two mixed forces, then the light infantry at the south flank."

As the enemy forces begin to separate more, to the extent where it will be four separate battles, as opposed to one massive one, Gabriel speaks up "I will deal with the south-central force then, and rush in to support Vibius with as much haste as possible."

You nod, then sigh. This battle is going to be bloody, you can feel it. "And I will do my best to aid Malcius just as rapidly."

The man smiles, quickly reloading his handbow, before saying "No no, my friend, it is I who will be rushing to your aid." And at that, the four of you split apart to see to your own maniples preparedness.

By the time your maniple is preparing to recieve the Uurlanthi charge in the north, it would be nearly midday, were the sun shining. Enemy ploys working, two of your best already in the medicae tent, the storm once again out of your control... all told you are in a sour mood.

However, Blackbirds timely, unharmed arrival to your staging area calms you greatly. As Sansa is settling into commanding Aurelius' men, and Lena sizing up Gaius' men for proper bodyguards for a mage, you are presented with a quickly scrawled, weather-worn sheet of parchment... two of them actually, one a list of the units headed your way, and the other the enemies formation by your massive orc raider.
