Well bros, my party just "kicked" my character out of the group. And by that, I mean they locked my wizard in a dungeon because the group Paladin/our leader was convinced I was a practicing Necromancer (highly illegal magic in this setting)

The DM is a huge total bro. The dungeon they locked me in just happens to have a secret underground crypt of a Necromancer (DM swears he planned it a long time ago, the party just didn't see any signs on our first go through besides KILLOOTREASURE).

Anyways. I plan on becoming the BBEG. While the party is out adventuring, I plan on spelunkan' the dungeon and trying to learn Necromancy. Only thing is, I don't think I'll have very many fresh bodies.

Anyway, general help thread on turning my budding Necromancer into a BBEG thread. Tips 'n' tricks on fortifying my new fortress welcome ;)

first off, slow fucking clap, you sound incredibly fun to play with

second off, remember that (successful) necromancers don't just raise shittons of skeletons/zombies. you'll want live servants and henchmen too. they can think for themselves and aren't vulnerable to turning
    >> Anonymous 07/19/11(Tue)22:06 No.15640576
You should reanimate the corpses the party killed before. Try to get some money for mercenarys, then kill them all before payday.

As said, I am locked in this crypt so I don't see myself convincing people en masse to follow an illegal mage. I reckon my best bet would be to get some sort of rumor out that this place is filled with semi-valuable treasure, get some low-level NPC adventurers out here. Don't know how I'll start the rumour though. Maybe my familiar will help...
    >> Anonymous 07/19/11(Tue)22:08 No.15640593
Just remember if you get a hold of any intelligent undead to keep a tight leash on them. If they get the chance they will END YOU and take over.

And be sure to remind the group they did this.
    the "paladin" did this.
    >> Anonymous 07/19/11(Tue)22:08 No.15640596
Make the dungeon your stronghold, keep it hidden. Leave in disguise and start suicide cults all over the place - this will give you both bodies and living followers (the "clergy" of your new "religion"). Make sure that not even your closest servants know who you are or where your stronghold is - so the PCs can't trace these cults back to you. In fact, if you can, work it so that each cult leader thinks the whole thing was his idea and you were one of his first converts.
    >> Anonymous 07/19/11(Tue)22:09 No.15640609
So it seems the main consensus is so far to get myself out of this crypt. I did like the idea of practicing my budding 'mancy on the corpses of all the bandits that were here before, they still should be fresh; not to mention any skeletons in the ground.

can you teleport out? if not, see if your DM will let you develop a spell to teleport small objects (one may already exist, i can't remember).
then make an official looking bounty paper saying the last known location is your new crypt, and teleport it to whatever tavern you know best that you don't think the rest of the party will use, the closer the better. you now have bounty hunters coming to you, and if you're at least 10th level you can handle most people in most campaign worlds, especially with the fact that you can use divination to see what's coming and plan ahead.
you now have people that will most likely be willing to listen to you as long as you aren't mean to them and agree to keep the coins coming

Cure most of them as for the others accelerate the growth of the disease, if you succeed you should have dozens of people who is grateful and loyal to you.

Talk with the DM about furnishing you with some sweet spells and resources you can find in the dungeon. If you're really going to become the villain, you need enough power to fight the rest of the party combined.

Talk it over with him about how you'll rise to power. The DM will probably jump to his feet to hand you some opportunities for learning necromancy and other illegal activities.

If he's a major bro, you might want to try creating minions out of earth and rock, kind of like golems but without the stats.

A unique twist on necromancer would be good, like sending the fallen soul of an enemy into an earthen minion as opposed to just raising the body.

Hmmm... Cage traps. DOZENS OF EM. And magical land mines. But no sign of necromancy in your fortress, just magical traps and nerve gas. Then, when they reach the throne room, injured and exhausted? HUNDREDS OF SKELETONS/GHOULS/GHASTS and SHADOWS. Many Shadows.

Actually, just focus on Self-Replicating undead, like Wraiths and Greater Shadows. One wraith in an ordinary, level 3 commoner farm village = An entire ARMY of wraiths come morning.

    >And be sure to remind the group they did this.
    >the "paladin" did this.

You should play this up any time you interact with them. They drove you to this. Did you even want to be a necromancer before all this happened?
    >> Anonymous 07/19/11(Tue)22:21 No.15640731
Make yourself untouchable. Once you're free from the dungeon, start grabbing political power. Saving a local kingdom from a deadly plague you unleashed might be a good start.

Form alliances with nearby goblin tribes; you will help organize their attacks on outlying villages and reraise their own dead as soldiers as long as they swear their loyalty to you. Just because you're a necromancer doesn't mean you can't act through agents and the living.

Finally, you need a plan for revenge. You don't just want to kill the party. You want to humiliate them, to have them all strung up as heathens, have everyone they ever loved abandon them. Have the whole world turn their backs on them, and then finally leave them to rot in your dungeon.

    Best of luck.
    >> Anonymous 07/19/11(Tue)22:22 No.15640741
Sell your services to the ruinous powers.

    As you climb into the dungeon depths, you faced a series of choices;
    Your humanity or your Power.
    Your life, or your Power.
    A grisly death, or Servitude.
    Obedience, or Compulsion.

You have chosen your path. You could have turned back. Maybe even escaped. Even (gasp) could have helped the party. Make it clear it is a choice that has been made... But also make it clear your options were limited by the party's actions..
That you were MADE as much as you made yourself.

What I would do (might not work, I don't know your group) would be, no raising corpses, just trap THE FUCK out of dungeon. First guy that comes in (if the DM's a bro, he probably won't just have you starve to death), gets killed by the traps (could be something simple like setting rocks up to fall at certain points) - or you could just kill the poor schmuck yourself, but he might have friends with him, so I recommend traps.

Now that you can leave, what you want to do is study as much necromancy as you can, but don't use any of it. Learn all you can about it in secret, but play up how you were treated unjustly and locked away for no reason. Try to gain followers any way you can - money (if there's a big crypt in the dungeon, you can probably sell some shit), or if you're charismatic, you could probably attract a few followers just because you were 'treated so unjustly'.

Make your home in the dungeon - not because it can be easily defended, but because that is where you were put as punishment. It was unjust, but who are you to question a man of god? Leave in secret, if at all.

Try to get word out to your former party. Try to get a face to face with the Paladin. You just want him to see that you were innocent, that you still are innocent, and that he treated you unfairly. Sure, maybe through some righteous indignation in there - if you're being completely 'forgive and forget', he might get suspicious.

Once he agrees to a face to face (he's a Paladin, should be easy to manipulate), set up a room for it, prepare the room for a fight. Once he's in the room, you kill him - use any knowledge you have, your necromancy, whatever.

Now, preferably, you're locked away in a room in a dungeon filled with long dead corpses, some people who might like you, and your former party. The corpse of the paladin is in the room with you. You raise him first (it's a matter of principle), then you raise the rest of the corpses in the dungeon.

Actually, that's what I doing most recently, I was making mud/dirt golems fueled by the lingering necrotic energies (I found a fetish that can channel Necrotic energies [I can't do that yet], first thing I found in the crypt.)

If my hunch is right, the further I explore and adventure in this crypt, the more neat Necromancer stuff I'll find.

    >>15640658
Do to fluff reasons, my Wizard can't teleport, but my familiar can. She's a snake.

I could....strip some of my robes off (they were white, starting to get dirty) and write in my blood/mud a bounty about this dungeon or something, have my familiar deliver it to a tavern.

Note: Before being locked in the crypt, my Wizard mostly preferred using Fire. The extend of my Necromancy atm is forcing lingering spirits into golems made of mud.

I recomend making an entire section of the dungeon out of undead.

Not the monsters, the actual structure. Ya, that hallway full of bones? They are all animated and will try and grapple you. The room with the flesh wall and carved face for a door way? It's a huge flesh zombie. Those suits of armor? Animated to attack the party.

"You accuse me of necromancy and leave me to die in this crypt? How fitting that I had no knowledge of this art prior to your judgement. Bask in the irony of what you have created and despair. Your skins shall form the walls of your tomb and your own skeletons shall stand guard over your rotting remains. Now come and taste the fruits you so foolishly sowed."

Awesome, but you can definitely take it further.

(referencing D2) Fire golems, Steel golems, Water Golems, hell you could make perversions of elementals fight for you. Water Golems made of tainted water to poison your enemies and whatnot.

But with actual bodies, try and combine them into glorious undead abominations. Whats better than 15 kobold zombies fighting your enemies? 15 kobold zombies mashed into a giant eldritch creature fighting your enemies.

Important note: The Paladin (an elf, go figure) and my Wizard (a human, can't remember if I ever specified) constantly bickered since we met; him being the stereotypical Paladin, my being a very pompous Wizard (poking fun at my party members for doing savage things). The player is a good guy though, no THAT GUY syndrome.

To my knowledge, the Paladin locked me in this crypt because according to him, playing with fire will only get everyone burnt and the last BBG told us all before we killed him that someone close to us would betray us.

My Wizard WAS True Neutral before all this. Probably going to shift to Lawful Evil, maybe Neutral Evil.

Well, this is what I would do.

    1)Turn myself into a Lich
    2) Use the knowledge in the crypt to learn ridiculous necromancy.
    3) Raise an army and experiment getting it up an running
    4) Remain true neutral, your new goal is not evil at all.

As for being the next BBEG, since you've been wronged by both the illegality against necromancy and the paranoia around necromancy it would be better to show the world how it can do them better. Create a society that uses mindless undead as soldiers and slave labor. All the menial tasks are performed as such which allows for the people to live in a benevolent technocracy ruled over by yourself where the living are recycled into the means which gives ease and comfort to the living, the only price for living their life in comfort.

I like that. To build on this guy's suggestion, OP, as the BBEG perhaps your only real quarrel should be with the paladin. In your mind, he betrayed you and the party. You can be fairly neutral, maybe somewhat cold to the rest of the party, but the paladin is who you want to maim and torture.

It's just that so long as the party aids the paladin, you have to fight them too. You should probably offer the rest of the party the chance to come over to your side pretty often, and talk up how the paladin betrayed you and, by extension, them as well, since he's forcing you to fight them now.

don't lure in random people to kill, kill bandits, thieves and other dredges of society that profit off of the weak.

Then when/if the party defeats you as you lay dying ask them about the lack of criminals, and the drop in murders etc make it really heroic and awesomely moving. Tell tales of how you saved children by sending the very same people who were trying to hurt them against their attackers.

become a hero of the people, sure no-one likes how you're doing it but you're getting results, and it's keeping their wives and children safe at night.

you need to play up the whole I'm still a good guy routine, and let the party know that it was their betrayal that left you open to the truth/madness that overwhelmed you to do all this.

OP, don't neglect the subversive aspects of necromancy; you can raise a dead rat just as easily as you can raise a dead human, and the rat can go anywhere unnoticed. don't forget about stuff like scrying skulls (CCTV in D&D lol), or using vermin/scavengers as your eyes and ears. don't forget about bugs and creepy crawlies either, being a verminfriend is pretty radical as well as pants-shittingly-terrifying to any opponent.

put this all together and you have what is essentially a region-wide information network that is largely undetectable and almost impossible to destroy. do you remember that scene in LotR where Frodo and Sam had to hide from a flock of crows, because if the crows saw them Sauron would instantly know their location?

that's what your ex-party members should feel. they should jump six feet in the air from just SPOTTING a crow, or be panicked enough to flee a town in the dead of night because they found a centipede in their room. and while they suffer through their own private hell, they'll be ridiculed and laughed at by everyone else for being terrified of nothing.

don't let them rest, eat, or sleep, until they come to you broken and begging for death.

Funny you should mention that, as soon as I got it in my mind that I would be the BBEG, I envisioned my Wizard sitting in an abandoned/decrepit mansion, undead rats scurrying all over the ground/each other, with millipedes burrowing in and out of the walls.

Not unless they are skeletons. Speaking of which- OP, If you Necromance your way around, your most basic troop should be a Skeleton- A skeleton that has been washed thorougly and bleached/painted in order to get that nasty look of the grave out, and if dressed, dressed properly. They will still be combat effective, but they will simply LOOK So much better- Extra points for using coal to blacken the inside of their eyes and generally highlighting their features with the black dust against white features.

That crusade done in His name, the one that killed thousands of innocents? The fanatical king that brutally tortured anyone that came under suspicion of heresy? The crazed zealot that took a rusty ax and slaughtered a family of five because He told him to do so in a dream? The man who saw His Glorious Face, said he would never again see something so beautiful, and shoved nails into his eyes? After all, the paladins religion is a great and mighty one, and all accounts of their epics must be told throughout the generations.

This is where I point out that Wish/Limited Wish can make things, and corpses have no listed cost.( i think).

    There's also the Stone to Flesh(wiz6)/Shape Stone(wiz4)/Flesh to Stone(wiz 6 also) abuse:

    Stone to Flesh:
The spell also can convert a mass of stone into a fleshy substance. Such flesh is inert and lacking a vital life force unless a life force or magical energy is available. (For example, this spell would turn a stone golem into a flesh golem, but an ordinary statue would become a corpse.)

So making statues of things lets you make corpses of things to animate. Become a statue artisan. Your party will NOT see this one coming.
Especailly when investigating your contributions to high art, and holding 'respect your church, craft statue' contests to help win the favor of the people.

I also really like the idea that necromancy can be the magic of the earth, that by mastering mud golems, you can open up more earth related necromancy

Possibly some ties to creation myths, depending on the game setting (gods making man from mud, to jewish golems). People are buried six feet under, partially out of respect for the dead, but also to return their essence to the land, in the hopes that something will become of it.
One of the reasons necromancy is so hated is because it, quite literally, interrupts this process.

Just some ideas, feel free to steal em.

OK seeing as you're a new practicing necromancer raising your army of undead... but that isn't enough.

You're going to need more soldiers and more undead.

Go to local goblin/ogre/kobold tribes with your army and force them to surrender accepting you as their master. Start aranging them into armies crush your opposition and begin teaching necromancy to a select group. Remember you must be a mildly benevolent ruler, give them what they want, mainly food, water, wealth, and revenge. Drive their hatred towards the rest of humanity and begin a guerrilla campaign against the local government, hit and run pillage and burn tactics will make you a difficult target for an army, and a significant amount of bribery will get rid of some of the more mercantile adventures sent after you. Once you've made the area more trouble than its worth and driven out the local government establish your nation and prepare for war (this is where the many expendable undead from your trained necromancer army come in). Your aggressiveness will eventually draw the rest of your party back and you can have an ambush of elite assassins and undead waiting for them. GIve them a chance for redemption that THEY NEVER GAVE YOU and enjoy the glory that is being the BBEG.

    This sounds good..
Maybe you were changing the stone to flesh to feed yourself and survive, then accidentally changed the remains of a corpse so old it practically was stone/clay /earth, but still had a tenuous link to the spirit of the person it once was. You then keep it for company in the dark/dungeon. You are now a Necromancer! Over time you develop your skills until you can take out the party, maintaining a good relationship with the spirit, who is your constant advisor and companion.
Also, instead of 'look what you did', try "What have you done to me?" at the end.

Let me tell you about necromancy, /tg/. I played a necromancer once, in what I thought was a solo game over IRC.

I went around to places where the economy was horrible, the rulers were tyrants, and the people were downtrodden.

There, hidden in cairns and crypts, I taught. I taught the people how to use the dead in their defense--and when defense was not needed, in their fields. I taught spellcraft and surgery. I taught them to think for themselves.

I overthrew tyrants, I saved civilizations. I left in my wake prosperous, well-fed democracies, populated by the living and the working dead.

Eventually, I became old. Tired. I knew that lichdom was not for me--benefits aside, I was ready to move on. I had mastered this side of death--yet there was so much more to learn, that required intimate knowledge of the other side.

As I prepared my final resting place, with a missive spell to go out to all my proteges, I used a simple scrying spell to view the places I had visited, once more.

What I saw surprised and disgusted me. The living once again worked the fields, instead of the schools and libraries. So-called 'good kings' once more had tyranny over the people. Ignorance and fear ruled these lands again. And bodies were cremated, even the bones, and scattered so that no necromancer could use them, for good or for ill.

I traced back the lines of fate to find what had caused such disasters, what had destroyed the lands which I had saved.

Adventurers, So-called saviors, hunting down the most powerful necromancer in the world. The Arch-Lich, they called me. I wasn't even dead! The stories they circulated claimed I had lived a thousand-thousand years, spreading misery and the walking dead in my wake. Misery, most certainly not, and I was scarcely sixty years old, though my mentor had certainly lived a long time, and his mentor before him. I was not even a lich!
Not long after I discovered this, my body failing, one organ at the time, this group of adventurers found me.

I lay on my deathbed. They were expecting a fight, some cackling, evil mastermind to kill so that they could have been called heroes. They did not expect an old, bitter man who had seen his life's work destroyed because of paranoia and bigotry.

I told them what I had done, and why I had done it. I told them of my hopes and dreams, for a world where no living man would have to work, where all could spend time doing what they truely desired--study, advancement, even the simple pleasures of a small farm and family, if they so wished. A world free of petty tyrants, where each man could vote for the ruler of their town or their nation.

In the end, I cried. For my proteges, good men dead at the hands of these heroes. For my plans, dashed against the rocks of hatred. For myself, an old, broken dying man with a wasted life.

As it turns out, my DM was using me as the BBEG for another campaign he was running... and according to him, I succeeded beautifully.

This is the first topic I've ever seen to make me wish I played pnp.

And then it hit me as I went to brush my teeth before bed - the reason for that is that this is not /tg/. No. Rather, this is this very undead BBEG's dungeon, and you all are minions given over to the task of crafting an anti-heroic epic poem - the thousand monkeys and a thousand typewriters in it's own way. And lo and behold, skeletons, fat zombies and even that shy wraith over there did a better job than those monkies could have hoped for. Or you're all undead monkies with skeletal typewriters. Juries out on that.

    Kudos though!

    Incorporeal undead.

The thing about dungeons, is while you don't have many fresh bodie, they are usually places of pain, torment and agony, and occasionally madness. This makes conditions ripe for the creation of the incorporeal undead, especially shadows, allips, and wraiths. These are actually my preferred undead types when I go BBEG on my once companions, because corporeal undead are easy to kill, while incorporeals are stat draining phantoms that are harder to kill and destroy.

"As you walk into the crypt you begin to smell the distinct scent of roses after a summer rain. Down the corridor you see a dim light. As you walk down the corridor, it opens to a large atrium. A small waterfall falls from high above into a small pool with statues of the entire party in it. In the center is a statue of the paladin directly in the flow of water from the waterfall. Etched into the floor is the poem "The Reaper and the Flowers." A single flower falls from the highest part of the unlit ceiling and withers as it touches the floor."

Yeah, I'm kind of imagining OP as not overtly killing the party on their way through the dungeon.

Kidnap an entire village of it's people, attract the attention of adventurers, especially the righteous ones.

When a decently strong paladin steps into your halls, play with his sanity and then capture him, torture and corrupt him to the point of no return. And finally kill him and resurrect him as your loyal anti-paladin.

Bonus points if the anti-paladin is someone close to the elf that got you locked up in there.

After years of work you could easily get the first part done. Especially if you show that necromancers are "good" and then make it seem the paladins order are evil by planting evidence, staging attacks ect. and the fact that a nations "beloved leader" (OP) was wrongly entenced to death by one of the orders knights.

    what do you think OP?
    >> Anonymous 07/20/11(Wed)03:51 No.15643110
Well, sorry im a bit late. First off, are you aming for revenge and world domination (read that you were gonna shift to neutral evil) or just showing the paladin that he was wrong? Also, since you are gonna be the BBEG, you might wanna make some sort of epic last adventure/boss battle. I propose this:

    >The group of adventurers finally entered the lair of the dreaded necromancer. Just as they stepped into the dank gloom of the dungeon, skeletal arms snaked out of the walls & floor, shackling the adventurers in a skeletal grip. The cave around them rumbled and shook, clearly moving upwards. Suddenly, and quickly as the had appeared, the skeletal arms vanished back into the bony interior of the dungeon. The mage/wizard of the group quickly scryed the outside of the dungeon, trying to learn what was happening. Flashed of rock and bone moving purposefully appeared before his eyes. Realization slowly dawned.

"The dungeon were in is... Well, theres no other way to say this. It's walking."

    >Yep, you guessed it. A giant fucking skeleton titan. And they're INSIDE it. Should prove to be quite interesting.

And then John was a zombie.

Assuming you'll become undead in that tomb:

When you meet the party, don't speak to them except for a single question directed at the Paladin. "What's the punishment for murder?"

Then do EXACTLY that. If the punishment is 10 years imprisonment - imprison thm for a decade. If it's death by hanging, hang them by the neck until dead.

You may be a necromancer, but in this case YOU have the moral high ground.

Sudden brilliant idea, but you'll have to get a bit of work with the DM on this.

As the other players are working through, ask that he create a young, naive paladin for the Elf Paladin to encounter. Then find that paladin and convince him that he's wrong. Make him a follower. Train him as a blackguard. Sic him on the paladin.
    >> Anonymous 07/20/11(Wed)04:48 No.15643338
Hunt down or find a way to create the best cursed item. That's right, the helm of opposite alignment. Capture minor clergymen from various small churches dedicated to the paladin's god, converting them to your new outlook on life by repeatedly forcing them to wear the helm until they fail their save. Keep doing this in secret until there is no more church dedicated to that god in the entire world, only the paladin, and your revised church dedicated to necromancy in his gods name.
    >> Anonymous 07/20/11(Wed)05:10 No.15643433
if they show up and you're suddenly a necromancer then they'll probably just assume the paladin was right and you were practicing necromancy all along. you need to work really hard of convincing them of your innocence prior to being locked away
    >> Anonymous 07/20/11(Wed)05:23 No.15643469
My favorite way to to make people "think" there's a necromancer afoot? flesh golems are a start but people know them too well. Instead cast animate object, A lot. Just because it's a corpse doesn't mean it isn't an object. You can make entire armies out of skeletons and not use a single ounce of necromancy. I used this once on a "mini-boss" villian who liked to make puppets, but prefered to use fresh ingredients and only a few of the best pieces from any one source. So there were a lot of corpses lying about missing a few random bones.

The best part was the Clerics reaction, I couldn't have hoped for better. He though he'd lost his connection with his god when turn undead didn't work on them. When holy magics did not destroy what appeared to be undead abominations.

It was a bit of a storytelling let down saying "They were just puppets." instead of having a deific reason the cleric wasn't working.
