The morning light filters into your command tent, and the quickly awakening captains and assistants are all looking to you. While you, try to think. You know that these flanking maneuvers are how the Desert Lords have circumvented the Degnarian line for hundreds of years. You know that your battles are likely to be the most important of the campaign. What you dont know, is how many schemes and tricks your foes have prpared for you. And aside from the fact that you are to face the remnants of the force you last battled, reinforced with replacement battalions, and provided with archers, you do not know what their plan is, or their marching order.

Are the flying units in close support formation, or are they ranging out as recon?

Also, what's the status of our own flying units?

If possible, I want to attack them over the course of two days: tonight, we get our artillery in range, set of a few salvos, then GTFO. Maybe have the Skywings do some night-time bombing runs.

Then we move ahead of the enemy during the night, and prepare to meet them during the day.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 07/19/11(Tue)21:35 No.15640367
    >>15640311
Actually, scratch that idea about doing harassing artillery strikes.

Instead, we have some of the autowagons just circle around the enemy camp, well beyond their engagement range but close enough that they can hear the sounds of the autowagons.
Our reputation will be enough to make the enemy commander's paranoia go into overdrive, as they try to figure out what we're doing in the darkness of night.
They'll put their camp on high alert, and so will not be rested when morning comes.

We have a reputation as being a Roman Viet Cong commander; let's use that to our advantage to mess with the enemy's head.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 07/19/11(Tue)21:47 No.15640407
    >>15640367
Oh, and just in case, we should probably move the entire maniple in the night.
We can move much faster than the enemy can march, so we can get so far ahead of the enemy that even though we marched through the night, we'll have gotten more sleep and rest overall.
If we're using Vohzd Lennis and his nomads as recon now, I'd like to task them with this psyop. Also, if it ends up riling the enemy so much that they send a force out to see what we're doing, Lennis can get to us, we can get a force of archers together, kill the pursuing force in the darkness, and then continue with the operation.
    >> Starshadow 07/19/11(Tue)21:54 No.15640462
I'm gonna assume they have the same mystic they did last time we fought this group. Any ideas how to deal with him?

    >>15640462
Make the battle a highly defensive one, so that he can't last?
The problem is how many life elementalists he has acting as batteries; if we can make the battle last long enough for him to use up all of the life elementalists, and then himself, we might be able to kill him with an artillery strike.
The problem is, preventing the enemy from retreating for that long. That part I haven't figured out yet.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 07/19/11(Tue)22:04 No.15640558
    >>15640488
Hmm...we COULD keep our air units back, until that time, and then have them attack from the flank.
They'd have to wait anyway, what with all of that massed ranged fire.
Maybe use the 'iron rain' idea on the archers from a safe altitude?
    >> Starshadow 07/19/11(Tue)22:04 No.15640563
If they leave camp while it is still dark we might be able to hit them during the night. In which case the mystic will count for very little. Blackbird might be able to cook up something too.

If we just allow them to fight a normal pitched battle they will probably just do what they did last time.

If we were fighting elven archers, I would scrap my psyop plan immediately.
But since we're dealing with human archers and crossbowmen, we might still be able to pull off this stunt.

Let's put the plan before our command staff, see what they think. And if we're going to be a few hours ahead of the enemy, we'll have time to build some defenses and rest up. Maybe even prepare a ring of fire for when the enemy arrives.
Two concentric rings of earth, one close in towards us, and the other far out. The earth rings will act as fire breaks, and since we'll be safe within the inner ring, we can let the Uurlanthi get into the killzone, then set the grass on fire.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 07/19/11(Tue)22:54 No.15641042
    >>15640927
It's either that, or we don't bother with a prepared position. We stay on the move, attacking them when they're on the march, or at camp trying to sleep.
We act like bandits doing drive-by artillery strikes.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 07/19/11(Tue)22:59 No.15641082
You eventually take in a deep breath and begin "You can sleep while the maniple moves, my friends. We are going to mount up as quickly as possible, and depart to interpose ourselves between the Uurlanthi force and Degnar. We will prepare a defense in the time we have between our arrival and our foes arrival at our location."

Most of your staff is silent for a time, before Gaius speaks up "How prepared will this defense be, if it is to obvious it will just encourage them to try to circumvent us, which will lead to us chasing them down, and wasting effort."

Blackbird nods "I can prepare some traps, but it will not be of any quality compared to what I have done with more time."

Finian scratches at his beard "The enemy is mostly medium infantry from Port Placid, so it would be more taxing than the previous battles of this campaign, but simply fighting them traditionally may be a wise choice here. We cannot afford for these dogs to get too close to Degnar."

Sansa chuckles "Perhaps we can use our rather frightening reputation, and some extra autowagons to keep our foes from sleeping soundly while we set our own temporary camp." You nod in approval.

Captain Corinth grins "Combine that with the night raids we have been preparing..." Blackbird quickly glances over to Degrian, who releases his odd approximation of a chuckle and shakes his head.

What if...we stayed out of engagement range?
We use psyops for two nights, evading the enemy and not engaging except for light skirmishes between recon units and trapped fields, forcing the enemy to detour.

Then as the sun begins to set on the third day, we attack them, so that the sun is behind us, and they're tired from a day of marching.

You stop nodding in agreement, to frown, and look down at the map, before interjecting "Perhaps my plan was too... eager. We ride west until tomorrow night, then travel for another day to interpose ourselves between our homeland and this enemy force. We spend the time between our camp being set up, and our foes arriving harrasing their minds and bodies night and day. By the time they reach us..."

Both women nod and Sansa speaks up "I'll get the soldiers moving, Justinian."

At that, the command staff begins to disperse captain Corinth makes his way to you "With Vohzd Lennis working the spare autowagons, and Blackbird trapping and harassing on land, does that mean that the night attacks for my wing, and the other aerial wings be moving on our foes?"

Before you can reply, you notice Degrian laughing directly at Blackbird. the big orc is actually... embarrassed looking. The strangeness of the scene thoroughly shatters your chain of thought, causing Corinth to start trying to get your attention, looking rather worried.

Yes, I'd like him to do the bombing night-time raids.

Preferably if he can schedule things with Lennis so that sometimes, the raids will happen when the autowagons can be heard, other times when they can't, and every once in a while he just does a fly-by without dropping anything.

We want to keep the Uurlanthi guessing at what's going to happen next.

You nod in agreement "Correct. You have command when you are in the sky, and I would like for you to cordinate with Vohzd Lennis if at all possible so that our foes both hear the clatter of autowagons, and are struck at from the sky at the same time, if only once."

The man nods, before glancing in the direction you are "I'm truly not certain what is more terrifying, that orc, or that orc trying so desperately to hide fear of something."

You sigh "The fact that he has fear makes him far and away the less frightening of the two." and at that, you set off to talk with the two.

"... assure you, my friend. I told Commander not possible a-" You hear Degrain explaining through gasped breaths.

"You were trying to make it possible" Blackbird rumbles out "And I will not throw myself from a living, healthy mount hundreds of yards from the ground, and trust parchment to-"

Degrian breaks out into another fit of laughter, cutting the orc off "Keep you from dying, yes yes. You say many times before." Blackbird opens his mouth, burt again Degrian laughs, and holds up a long hand "Especially when you can approach a foe with greater stealth on land, and have better chance of surviving."

You stifle a laugh as you realize what it was that had the old clan orc so worried, who turns to you, doing his best to collect himself "Order mye to ride a pegasus, valkerie, gryphon... Shintjas cavernus cunt I'd even wrangle and ride one of the flying things the Loukys ride through the sky if you command it. Provided I wont have to leap from the damned thing for some entirely to logical reason you would give me." Degrian breaks into another fit of laughter.

"It was just an idea for getting infantry quickly across a large body of water, and into enemy territory. Don't worry about it."

I think it would be good to get our raiders to coordinate. Lennis's men and horses could just pull the auto-wagons around and scout. They probably shouldn't get anywhere near bow range of the enemy camp. Our valks will drop steel rain from the air. If the enemy sends out cavalry to investigate or attack our auto-wagons, Blackbird's men can spring up from the tall grass and ambush the riders. The auto-wagons can just outrun any enemy infantry patrols.

    Yes.
The enemy has a lot of velociprey; Lennis must avoid getting into combat with them as much as possible.

Having Blackbird work with Lennis sounds like a good idea; ask his opinion on it, and have him do it if he thinks it can work.
    >> GoldPanda 07/20/11(Wed)00:39 No.15641864
Idea: I recall that "sacred" fire would disturb the arcane mists, which would in turn disturb mage vision. Would Laelith be able to "bottle" that, so that we can drop sacred fire bombs from the air, and start a fire inside the enemy camp that screws with mage vision?

That would give our valks a lot of cover against enemy mages.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 07/20/11(Wed)00:43 No.15641887
You allow yourself to laugh, long and hard, before you reply "Dont worry my friend... I would test on livestock and foodstuffs before I even considered putting such a device to use. Even then , it would be mostly to save the lives of experienced Valkerie riders."

Blackbird noticeably relaxes "Those poor cows..." he eventually chuckles out. All three of you begin to laugh hysterically at the mental image of a cow falling from the sky, a torn sheet of parchment trailing behind it on its fatal journey to land.

Most of the soldiers are sleeping soundly, despite the terrible clamor the wagons are throwing up. Fuck. I think we should botch combat instead of elementalism.
We have the 'No Friendly Fire' trait, so with a 98 or lower, we won't harm our own men.

Jayne shakes her head "My infallible husband..." she deadpans, catching another leaping assassin as he attempts to escape. another infiltrator falls to one of Gaius' soldiers spears, screaming in agony. Being behind the wagons now, you attempt to raise some stone spikes to impale the last infiltrator. Unfortuanately, light of foot, and level-headedly, the man sets a foot down on the tip, and leaps off of it. You attempt to raise more spikes to impale him, but the man continues to bound from point to point, nearly outpacing Spite. Nearly. However, as you run him down, he wheels about, and throws a dagger at you, and you can feel it bite into your shield-arms shoulder blade, feel the burn as the toxin seeps into your body. You curse silently, and immediately begin struggling to stay awake. You have no clue what it is, but the toxin is so...

You wake up in the medicae tent, Jayne fretting over you, Kyria, Sansa, Laelith, and Lena all inside the tent, looking worried. Outside, you can hear the rest of your command staff muttering nervously. You try to open your mouth, but your lips crack, and your throat and tongue refuse to form words. Sansa shakes her head, and hands you a glass phial of water "We are camped a few hours west of the uurlanthi force. The raids were successful, but with the lighting arcana they have, not nearly as effective as we had hoped."

"However, I am certain that their mystic is still passed out from the effort it took him to keep the arcana, and the lordling in command safe." Laelith adds, moving to rest a hand on your shoulder.

Doing your best to ignore the gesture, you push yourself up "When can I-" and you fall back to your cot.

Jayne shakes her head "Less than an hour, love... let me do my work."

Sansa chuckles "You would do well to think while you can, by the time you are up, we will likely be able to see the enemy force on the horizon."

Garlian and the Thunderers to the north.
Lennis to go the long way around the north to come back and start mixing it up with the archers from the rear, but stay the fuck away from any velociprey cav; we don't want a repeat of the last engagement.

Front line, from north to south: Cornelius, Uurist, Gaius.
Second line, north to south: Infiltrators behind Cornelius, ordered to prevent flanking by enemy light infantry.
Third line, north to south: Deadeyes, Scouts, Rangers.
Earth elementalism team, concentrate on earthen defense works on the southern flank, attempt to catch enemy cavalry in fissures if possible, but defenses are main issue.
Artillery crews to concentrate fire on enemy crossbowmen.

Actually, I wanted to smash the northern cavalry with a strong punch from both of our uursan units first, then have them go through the rear of the archer and crossbowmen companies, then deal with the southern cavalry.
And I wanted the Centurions at the south because we would be a little thin down there.

We both agree on the disposition of our ranged units, though.
    >> GoldPanda 07/20/11(Wed)03:13 No.15642862
Sansa with the Deadeyes, and direct all ranged fire.

    Collin with the Warlords.

Laelith and other fire elementalists provide close range support for our infantry as needed.

Use the three earth-lightning-life elementalist teams we had before. Assign one to each infantry unit.

All other elementalists provide ranged support with the archers.

Deploy Lena if she's well rested. Is Bellatrix up yet?

See if Autronius can pull some shenanigans. Maybe put some imaginary griffons in the sky. The enemy's air cavalry are much fewer in number, and should require less energy to fool.

That would leave our southern flank dangerously exposed to three enemy cavalry wings.

Our legionnaires can hold out for a while if flanked by enemy light infantry. If we let the enemy cavalry in, they can seriously disrupt our infantry formations, or maybe just go straight for our archers and heavy weapons.

Okay, from looking at the map, my (horribly micro-managed) plan would be:

    In the north:
The Estren Infiltrators disrupt the elven light cavalry.
The Skyrus Thunderers confront the horse cavalry (and hopefully rip and tear).

    In the south:
Blacktusk Raiders disrupt the elven velociprey knights.
We ride with Jayne, tear up the horse cavalry with our elementalism, and then onto GROURIOUS BATTLE with Ramon Vistyek and his personal guard.
