Except in this case common usage hasn't offered an alternative definition for any individual words. Instead we're given a phrase with an assumed meaning, even though the definitions of all the components of that phrase mean the exact opposite of what is intended.

I agree. But in order for language to function as a means of effectively communicating ideas, there needs to be a common agreement on the definitions of the words being used. In this cased, the words are being used contrary to their definition. The phrase has gained acceptance, but unless the definitions of the words in question are changed then we're left with an odd, contradictory novelty of a phrase.

(Then again, English has never been known to shy away from being what linguists like to call "batshit insane")

    >But in order for language to function as a means of effectively communicating ideas, there needs to be a common agreement on the definitions of the words being used.
Respectfully, I strongly disagree with this. As far as I'm aware, language functioned perfectly well before people began offering definitions of words (for example, Shakespeare communicated effectively despite making shit up all over the place, certainly before Johnson offered definitions of the words he used).

Now, 'In order for language to function as a means of effectively communicating ideas, there needs to be a common agreement on the meaning of the words being used.' or 'a commmon agreement on the methods of using the words', or to take it another step 'a common agreement about the structure of the language-game participants are undertaking'. They're sentiments I can support.

A fair point. And I suppose it would be silly of me to make the argument that a DICTIONARY definition is required for people to understand the words other people use.

I can get behind "agreement on the meaning of the words being used". In any case, I suppose my entire point is that I personally (as well as some not-insignificant portion of people on the internet) am not totally comfortable with the widespread use of a phrase relying on the listener understanding that the speaker means the exact opposite of the commonly-held meanings of the words they are using. English is a language built out of exceptions, but I would really prefer it if in this case the phrase was capable of standing on its own and being rationally reducible, as opposed to relying on a speaker having prior experience and knowing what is intended.

That's an entirely coherent position. On the other hand, I am comfortable thinking of language as a mutable, incoherent, big ball of wibbly wobbly timey-wimey stuff. Sure, there might be an idealised form of 'English', like we're using at the moment, but that can't be the 'correct' or 'proper' English some aspies want it to be - it's just as valid as whatever the fuck it is that Yardies say to eachother, or West-country grunting farmers, or the technobabble techies talk to eachother. I find that that is a much more interesting explanation of language than, for example, the French model of having a list of acceptable words and how they're used, were there is a serious attempt to narrowly define language and ignore how it's actually used.

Maybe it's just the massive, raeging boner I have for Wittgenstein, but I feel that day-to-day language cannot stand on its own, that it is inherently irrational and irreducible. When language is actually used, I think that you do have to acknowledge that everyone engaged in the communication has prior experience and are more interested in getting the 'gist' of what's being said than in precisely understanding the technical aspects of their constructions.
Also, fuck grammar. Fuck it in the arse as a useless pile of incoherent gobblediegook. Fuck you, Latin.
Also, I have a degree in philosophy. I think this is the first time it's been useful since graduation.

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
    And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
    And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
    The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
    He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
    O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
    He chortled in his joy.

Funny you mention that, since I just finished both an elementary linguistics class and fulfilling my foreign language requirement with lower-division Latin. I personally admire the way language can be charted out and proscribed, so that by subtle changes one can create an intentional variation in meaning. On the other hand, it is silly to think of language as having a "right" and "wrong" usage which is immutable over time.

I'm heading to bed now, but if I were to be honest I'm pretty sure my true position would be "It's silly to try and define 'proper' language, let alone grammar, but I do so love being right (even in arbitrary matters)."

Fair enough. For the record, there's also the problem of 'Latin' not being the same thing as day-to-day Latin at any point in Ancient Rome, or for that matter ecclesiastical latin in the Medieval Period, which looked more like c' u_t's/n to save parchment...

The DM is a hardcore Starwars fan. Loves the shit out of Mando's, can speak Mandolorian. (no, really.)

Now it was myself, my brother, and a few other guys. Figuring it was a one off and "what the hell" I made myself a human noble (who, up to two and a half years later, as STILL being referred to as "Captain Diplomacy" his real name got used like twice in the first session and then lost to the sands of time).

Now, you should know that my brother only plays one kind of character. Chaotic Awesome. He decides to go Mandolorian (much to the DM's delight) heavy weps, because fuck opening doors and cans of food manually. Describes him like you would a heavy muscleman, tanked to hell. Calls him Brick. Dm lets it slide because, hell, mando.

The DM's sister makes an ewok demo expert and stacks stealth, there's a rodian sniper who HATES jedi, there were a few other characters who were subject to stupid deaths, Captain Diplomacy only made it because he was basically Arnold J. Rimmer, except he actually got promoted (another story... which also includes Brick)

    (Cont.)

Anyway, campaign is set post episode 6, with the remnant still flying around being major dicks. First mission we're sent on is an infiltration mission for the New Republic as mercs, to a shitty little backwater since this big bad remnant moff has taken it over, a guy called Krassis. First thing after the doors open Stormtroopers "stop right there". Well... Brick didn't. You see his backstory was that he was one of the Mandolorian mercs brought in to train the clone army, these guys? Forget about it. So after kicking the first trooper in the head we start a firefight. Great.

We manage to escape, having to drag Brick away from killing more of them and we exit the spaceport, right into the middle of a garrison. Now it's hard to describe, but from the spaceport (a single shuttle sized bay on this speck of rock, other than the huge clearing the remnant had fucked out for their supply ships) we headed east into the large town square, to the south was a immensely wide staircase finishing on a large raised platform was a 2 man team manning an e-web and another 2 man team manning some kind of anti-structural weapon.Further east was a path that lead up along the side of a moutain, the mountain was bristling with anti-air. in the middle of the town square (think tatooine-esque/arabic architecture) was a small command centre. Behind the e-web and the cannon there was a huge wall and a checkpoint. Behind that, some kind of temple.

Anyway, we're running like fuck and manage to escape, we narrowly avoided getting our shit handed to us by the e-web when a repulic sympathiser (our contact) managed to get us inside on the mud huts.

We managed to keep low until sundown.

Fast forward a bit because, boring.

Basically, turns out Krassis found a sith temple and was ransacking it for information, on what, we weren't certain. The ewok snuck into the command post at night and overheard a leuitennant getting chewed out for not finding the information.

During this time, I'd been rolling a fucktonne of diplomacy against brick, trying to reason with him not to go out into the middle of the square and opening fire. Captain Diplomacy was from a human house that specialised in bio-engineering and surgery (basically I was the healer) and I basically insulted him, his ancestors and his clan by asking him to hide. He was that bad.

So we decide to sneak into the temple, just to see what was what.
    >> Anonymous 06/10/11(Fri)11:48 No.15219339
    >>15219264

After finding the secret entrance we realise that there was even more to this place. It was a goddamn active sith temple with sith apprentices training. We avoid detection, because even brick isn't stupid enough to take on sith without a lot of firepower and basically scooby doo ourselves into a secret chamber.

A secret chamber that contained three vibro-axe weilding force adepts that cloaked themselves. They got the drop on poor brick and cut his arm off. We killed two of them and ran like fuck back to the informant's house brick bleeding out badly.

Now, obviously because the DM loves mando's and it was the first game he didn't exactly want the character to die, but insisted that Brick was now half the mando he used to be. I managed to stabilise the bleeding and he returns to consciousness. Wearing cloaks the next day we go to the nearest robot junkier to get him a new arm. (Stormtroopers were on ridiculous high alert. they brought a fucktonne of troopers into the town and had them stationed on rooves).

Anyway, we get there undetected and poke around the shop looking for something we could use. I try to finesse any knowledge of underground weapons dealers out of the merchant, but he clams up because Captain Diplomacy is terrible at everything other than running away and dodging bullets. that and he thinks he's a remnant spy, which after the others calm him down, inclines him to add 25% to the cost of everything.

Brick looks up and goes "I want a gun for my new arm"
    >> Anonymous 06/10/11(Fri)11:51 No.15219353
    >>15219339
after a lot of humming and harring from the DM as he works out the rules, we go through some shenannigans to get the gun he wants (taking down stormtroopers, solid snake style, or in my case, getting discovered and arrested before the others rescue me) brick finally gets the gun he wants. The anti-structural weapon from the plaza.

12 hours later I've sown it on. It's that heavy he can't even lift it to aim without straining and he now walks with a drag and suffers ridiculous penalties. To hide the weapon he keeps the cloak.

In an interview for the BBC he did during the filming of Star Trek 4, Gene Roddenberry said that if he could have done it in the 60s, he would have openly made Kirk and Spock lovers. This is supported by the Trek Omnibus/Setting Bible that explains that Kirk/Spock are incredibly familiar "like a long time married couple".

One of his, not realized in Trek, dreams about the future is that people get past their dogmatic attachment to hetero-only sexuality.

    *sigh* Young 'uns these days.

    Bust / Waist / Hips.

    Each measured in Inches.

    40 / 34 / 41 Suggests

-Hourglass figure. (Marylin Monroe, for proprortion sake, was 37-23-35, But she was also 5 foot 5 1/2 inches tall, since the average american woman is taller than that, I'm assuming she's well proportioned.)

-She probably has either "Dem HIPS!" or "Dat ASS!"

Men, for what it's worth, do not have our proportions measured in an identical fasion... instead, we get measured at the "trouser waist" (Roughtly your navel) and the "Front Waistband" (Where your pants actually *are* on your body.)
    >> Anonymous 06/11/11(Sat)21:57 No.15235587
    >>15235064
A good way to check proportions is the waist-hip ratio. Divide the waist measurement by the hips, and see the resulting number.

Marylin Monroe, according to those measurements, was 0.65.
