By the time Toshiro's scouts identified the incoming Xenos reinforcements through their scopes on the outskirts of the field of battle, the defeat of the Third Company, first to engage the enemy in honorable combat, was at hand. They knew, as only doomed men might know, that if they were going to have any chance of defeating these soulless enemies, they would need to change the very way they fought and bled in service to the Emperor. With a defiant scream of hatred, the Captain of the third was suddenly, finally silenced. Knowing they needed to warn others of the impending onslaught, the Warriors of the third fought ever harder, but to no avail. By the time the final bolter was silenced, the implacable Xenos had already begun moving on to still-living prospects, such was the contempt they had for their would-be attackers.
The victory was not swift by any means, but it was utterly absolute. The day after the battle not even the corpses of guardsmen were to be found, only a massive Host of Necron Raiders and Monoliths where Imperial bulwarks and shrines to the Emperor had formally stood, resplendant in their glory and might, now reduced to rubble and dust. A macabre reflection of the enslaved minds of the Necrons, marching in rank upon rank to bring ruin to the Galaxy. |
