Adventure time P&P game. Would you play it?

I'm thinking of putting one together that fits on two or three pages, tops. Ultimate beer and pretzels game.

    What say you, /tg/?

Also: Bonus points for posting an Ooo version of yourself.

possibly... what ever you do, make sure you add some post-apocalypse references into it. Why? Because everyone I know that watches that show seems to somehow overlook those hints and such.

Most of that would be left up to whoever's running the game; I don't want to bog it down with a lot of specifics. Mostly, I figure the game's goals would be either: (A) Find something interesting to do, (B) Beat up random monsters, or (C) Find relics from before the mushroom war, that lead to A and B.

I'm figuring a lot of the game would be decided by the players. Someone would suggest something to go do and the game rolls on.

Ok, bam, here we go: Finn's stats.

D6 system. highest a stat can be is a six. Awesomeness factors into all rolls 'cept focus. Reason for that is because focus is for magic, and magic is all sorts of nutso powerful in Ooo.

You get six points for each row. You can make a character in literally seconds this way. What say you?

So, I'm thinking, you figure out your health by taking your strength, toughness, and awesomeness and adding them up. So Finn would have... 15hp.

To hit somebody, you combine your strength and awesomeness and roll a d6.

If it beats their toughness+awesomeness, you hit 'em.

Damage is your strength + whatever weapon you've got.

    What do we think?

    >> Engineer Guy 05/22/11(Sun)04:39 No.15010257
Alright, here's what I got for magic.

Spells are ranked by level. 1/2-6. When you cast a spell of a certain level, it drains your focus bar. Your focus bar refills at a constant rate, maybe 1/2 a round.

So, you cast a 1/2 level spell. Next round, you're back to full. You cast a 6th level spell. Twelve rounds to get back to full.

Spell strength needs to be LINEAR. None of this Exponential Spell Power crap. 6th level spells equal 12 1/2 level spells.
    >> Necbromancer 05/22/11(Sun)04:41 No.15010274
    >>15010253

I'm thinking player wizards will be limited to one type of magic, like ice wizard or forest wizard, and spells will be more like general fluff type things than specific effects.

Like, a level 1 forest wizard will have something like 'control foliage.' He can make foliage do things for him, like lift objects, tangle up people's feet, or form a canopy or shelter.

Then as they level up, their powers get generally more awesome. It's very much a 'as long as the group says it's cool' thing.
    >> Engineer Guy 05/22/11(Sun)04:45 No.15010297
    >>15010274
Or it could be that you can specialize. Say you've got a two in Focus, because you didn't want your awesomeness to suffer. Then you can sacrifice your ability to cast other kinds of spells for a boost to Focus. So you'd have Ice Magic, and nothing else, but you can use Ice Magic at focus 3 or 4.

    Sound ok?

Well the whole Mushroom War (mushroom clouds) thing, the corpses, sunken cities, destroyed armies, radiation and shelter warnings, mutant goblins and whatnot, iced braindead zombie business men and whatnot should make it kinda obvious. I didn't think anyone missed that. Also fun fact, Marceline became a vampire before the Mushroom War.

Totally. I'm thinking 'Food people' will be a general race type, along with 'Gadget people,' and probably elemental people. Tree people, or Treeple, will probably be the closest thing to human (like the forest wizard or the marauders). Lumps will totally be a player race. Make that expand to other spell schools.

One set of basic spells that covers the range of them, fluff and application is up to DM for simplicity.

    Control X
    >Control Ice: you can create manipulate small amounts of ice and medium amounts over time with focus

    >Control Plants: you can create manipulate small plants and medium sized plants over time with focus

Damage for spells would probably be focus + awesome?

Smoothness: Social Ability and agility. Stealth and jumping, basically.
Smarts: Doing math and crap. I don't know. Maybe you can beat dragons by quoting Shakespeare at them for a few hours.

    Spells though?

    Maybe

    Magic Cantrip (little things)
Magic Trick (things that hamper enemy)
    Magic Attack (basic damage)
    Big Magic Attack (bigger damage)

How about you get as many spells per day as you have in focus, with stronger spells costing more focus?

    Proposal: a 4e approach.

rather than have a specific stat locked to a specific task, why not have a class determine what it uses specific stats for?

As for magic, maybe Focus is the number of things you can do with magic, rather than the number of spells you can cast. So at Focus 6, you can use the following:
    Ice Magic Cantrips
    Control Ice
    Ice Magic Blast
    Ice Magic Healing

    -NO LEVELS
    -You start with 2 feats
-You can get more feats, one for every two stat points

Well, seeing as the game run on Rule of Cool, they don't offer numerical benefits, but they would go a long way to fleshing out the character.

Take Bob, for example. Bob is a Lawyer. He's got a lot of Smoothness, but no Awesomeness, because he's a Lawyer.

Bob wants to convince a dragon to leave some people alone, using his Lawyer powers. While he'd only have a 5 to add to his roll normally, using his knowledge of law, he can double his roll.

Bob rolls a 3, which, doubled, is a 6. Bob has gotten an 11, and thus convinced the dragon to bugger off forever.

Alright, since you like it, let's see what we can do with another kind of Feat. This time, we'll see what we can do with Bob's Feat: Made Of Shadow.

Bob is currently adventuring with his friend Jim. Jim is a Knight, and wears very heavy armor. Bob and Jim come to a ravine. Across it, the device needed to lower the bridge. Now, Jim can't jump across because of his armor. Neither can Bob, because of his lack of Strength. However, there is a wall along the side of the ravine.

Bob thinks for a minute, and walks up to the wall. Using his Feat: Made Of Shadow, he melts into the wall and goes across its surface like a shadow. Now on the other side of the ravine, Bob pulls himself off the wall, and lowers the bridge for Jim. Jim can now cross the ravine, thanks to Bob.
    >> Engineer Guy 05/22/11(Sun)05:59 No.15010771
    >>15010742
Here's a combat situation in which the Feat: Made Of Shadow can be used.

Bob and Jim are fighting a Giant Fish. Jim is doing most of the fighting, however, because Bob isn't good at fighting. Bob however, thinks if he can get on the Giant Fish's back, he can ride it until it gets tired. So Bob, using his Feat: Made Of Shadow, melts into the wall, and climbs the wall to the ceiling. At the ceiling, Bob melts out of the wall, and drops onto the Giant Fish. Now on the Giant Fish, Bob must only hold on for dear life, until the Giant Fish gets tired.

The Feat: Laser Vision allows Jim to shoot lasers out of his eyes at the Giant Fish, draining its strength and making it easier for Bob to tire it out.

That seems to fall under the preview of Perks. I was thinking of having Perks be something different. Feats would be from your Race and Class. Perks would be other stuff, as a result of your stats, or something else. Another one might be the Perk: Good At Science.

You can roll twice and take the better roll for all Science related actions.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/11(Sun)06:14 No.15010855
Wouldn't it be better if you begun with like, 12-16 points to spend in the same matter that you do now, or choosing to spend some of those points on feats? Then when you level up, you can add either one extra point or one extra feat?

I don't see why someone could be max tough and max smooth!

It's more of a personal choice, really. If your group wanted to do it that way, no problem. As it is now, it's like Point Buy, where as yours would be like rolling 3d6.

Or maybe it's the opposite. Either way, it doesn't really matter. This is just the recommended way, not the only way.

We should most certainly continue this in the morrow, my brain may function better with some sleep.

I am liking this quite a bit.

Quick question - will we be actually devising things like races/classes and writing these perks/feats down? Or will it work something like the FATE system where you make this shit up and the DM okays it?

Well i just don't like that a starting level character can have full strength.

I think i'll do this: When you create your character you get four bars on each of the three stats, so you can have like either 2 strength/2 smarts or 4 strength/0 smarts. You also get to choose one background feat (which is kinda what class you begin as, such as vampire, berserker, princess etc), one racial feat (your race) and then one extra feat.

At each level, you can put one extra point in any stat, or choose a new feat. For each focus point you have, you can choose a new spell, and if you want more than six spells then you can spend a point on getting a spell.

Also, you get to choose one magic school at the beginning if you want to, and then spend feats if you want to use other spells. Feats could be like "Trained with the ice king" or something.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/11(Sun)06:24 No.15010928
    >>15010912

Yes, but we should do some general rules for some stuff. Like, a feat shouldn't increase your stats by more than one point, or let you access more than one school of magic and stuff.

Oh and also, for each level up, you get candy!

We haven't even decided if we're using a leveling system yet. It may just be you get a perk every couple adventurers, and a point for one stat to go with it.

Or there may be no leveling system at all, and what you start with is what you stay with.

Feats can give you weird powers
Feats can double your roll for certain things

    Perks, on the other hand:
Can alter how things react with you
Let you roll twice for certain things and take the better result

Well of course, but it would still be the same since there is no exp progression and stuff. The level would only be a number independent on anything else, ever, so you could just as easily just skip the number part.

You could just do it so that the perks/feats could raise one stat point. "Fighting trolls" would give +1 strength, "Becoming a wizard" would give you one focus, "Finishing first grade of school" would give you one smart etc.

Same thing as I wrote above, but with other words.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/11(Sun)06:33 No.15010993
    >>15010970

Meh, really no need then. It would be better to just use one definition, and then call them "Background *perk/feat*" or "Racial *perk/feat*".

Why make it more confusing than it could be? There's nothing essential to the word "feat" which means that it is something that can't be changed or anything.
    >> Engineer Guy 05/22/11(Sun)06:35 No.15010999
    >>15010982
No, that wouldn't work. For Perks or Feats. You can raise stat points with single stats you get from adventuring, but Perks/Feats are different. They do things stat points can't.

You can't use Toughness to Shape-shift. Nor can you use Smarts to be able to roll twice for your Attack roll. That wouldn't make sense.

I think we're slowly wandering into the FATE system here...

The number of starting points and Feats is determined by the AM (Adventure Master), this corresponds to the overall experience/prowess of the party. (Simmilar to the FATE "Power Level" system: "Feet in the Water", "Up to your Waist", "Chest Deep", "Submerged")

Background/Racial Perks are a static number, and are generally more powerful than a lone feat.

Being that Feats and Perks are totally pulled from from the player's ass, they can almost do anything (with the AM's permission), HOWEVER, the AM can also invoke them in a positive or negative fashion at his will.

Yeah, actually, to account for Finn's occasional strokes of genius.

So, perks: Perks are how you customize your character. Perks are the only way take your stats higher than the normal 6.

Perks - Players get one perk at character creation. Perks can be anything and everything, based on what the character is and does. A perk can never increase a stat by more than one point at a time. A perk can, however, increase a stat in a specific situation by up to 3. Example:
Finn takes a perk he calls 'Hero Strong.' This perk gives him +1 strength. His strength stat becomes a seven with this perk. Later, Finn takes the perk he calls 'A Sweet Kick.' This perk gives him a +2 to strength, but only when kicking someone. Since the Sweet kick perk only applies in a specific instance, it can be slightly better than a general perk.
Another Example Perk could be 'Stretchy' which allows the character to stretch a bit. It's not full-on Jake stretchyness, but if you take it two or three times...

It appears there's still a bit of contention on how to do magic. I personally liked the idea of picking a specialization of magic at character creation, then getting more powerful forms of magic at higher levels of focus. Treat it similar to Mage's creative thaumaturgy, and I think it works as a system.

focus decides how many different spells you can cast. They have to be approved by everyone playing and generally more utility that laser blasts. Just look at the Ice king none of his spells do direct damage. They just freeze you, but if he was more creative and did something like freeze you and flying kick you off a cliff he could get some damage done. There appears to be nothing like mana in the show so you should be able to spam your spells

Exactly. So, say you're an ice Wizard. At the start you can do minor ice related things. You can make small chunks of ice fly around, you can freeze liquids, or deal a d6 ice damage with your ice beam.

So, Ice wizard's turn rolls around: "I have an ice beam, so I'm going to shoot it at the ground to make the grass ogre slip." Dm says "Sure, let's see if he does. DM rolls a toughness+awesome for the grass ogre. Ice wizard has to beat the toughness with his focus + smarts roll.

Out of combat, it starts raining. The ice wizard wants to make a shelter. He says 'Hey, I can freeze stuff...I'm going to freeze these tree branches together using the rain water to make a shelter.' Dm says "Sure, that seems reasonable. You make yourself an ice shanty."

Now we just need to finalize the way perks work.

I'm thinking you start with 2: 1 that has to do with your race or body type, and 1 that works as your "class feature," in line with the above example of Jim the Knight and Bill the Lawyer.

When the AM (which, considering the post-apocalyptic thing, is very creepy in a mouthless, need-to-scream sort of way) deems everyone worthy of a "level up", they get either a stat boost or a perk. How's that work for everyone?

tbh, people going 'guise, guise, but guise, its post-apoc!" seems sort of silly.

Yes, there are signs its post apoc - but its so FAR post apoc, and so much appears to have happened (very little of which makes sense from a 'oh, radiation mutation business' perspective) that it might as well BE a magical realm.

Besides, as well all know, in the future, the lazy Eloi will be living above ground.
But underground, there will be cave monsters that use the above ground people for food.
    /tg/, they eat them.

    Ok, stats so far:
Health- Your health is determined by adding your Strength, toughness, and your awesomeness together.
    Physical Attacks: Strength + Awesome+d6
Physical Attack Damage: Weapon + Strength
    Range Attacks: Smoothness + Focus+d6
    Ranged Attack Damage: Weapon+Focus
    Magic Attacks: Focus + Smarts+d6
Magic Attack Damage: Spell + Focus
    Defense: Toughness + Awesome
Social Ability: Smoothness + Awesome/Focus+d6 (Depending on who you're talking to and your goal)
    Mental Resistance: Smarts + Focus+d6
    Science! : Smarts + Awesome+d6
Spells - Offensive spells start at 1d3 damage. This damage can be increased with perks.

You would get items as a perk. The Perk "Click-Click" would represent your armor, and would grant the appropriate bonuses while you are wearing it.

So instead of having a whole mess of items and loot and bonuses to worry about, the AM can grant perks which represent items.

Well then, if its a magical post-apoc land, then you have no place bitching at people who say its a magical land, do ya?
In that case, either side - be they whinging on about it being post-apoc or a magical wonderland - are right, and thus both sides are idiots for arguing the point.

    >>15015477
Yes, and then the creator made a magical land populated by candy people and raincorns and a ton of other shit that doesn't really have any business in the typical 'post-apoc' setting.
Unless this is like some Rifts status apocalypse we're talking, which would make quite a bit of sense really...

In any case, focusing on the post-apoc aspect of AT is like focusing on the post-apoc aspect of WH40k - they're so far removed from anything resembling human society, they might as well be fucking Candyland or a D&D setting at this point; and the fact that there are minute snippets of debris and bomb casings hardly offers explanation as to how humanoid cupcakes came to walk the land of Ooo :P

    SAMPLE RACES. BAM!

Tree People, or "Treeples" - Tree people are humanoids who dwell in the forests of Ooo. They have plant-like qualitities, and their skin has a slight greenish hue. Tree people are nature-y and mellow. Treeples don't have to eat so long as they have sun and water, though they often do so because food is delicious.

Lumps - The residents of lumpy space as a pillowy, opinionated bunch. They lack legs, isntead floating a few feet off the ground. They come in a wide variety of colors and have a peculiar accent. Since they can float, they don't have to worry about things like spiky floors or pit traps.

Candy People - Citizens of the candy kingdom are a lighthearted, if sometimes dense folk. They come in all manner of shapes and sizes, covering every part of the confectionary rainbow. Candy people can heal themselves simply by dumping some sugar on their bodies.

    Heroism vs. Jerkiness

You can either be a Hero or a Jerk. Players would start at 0 and earn points towards one way or the other. Good NPCs would like Heroes and be afraid of Jerks, while Bad NPCs would like Jerks and be afraid of Heroes (or openly hostile and vice versa).

If Alignment is going to come into play at all, I propose we call it something like 'Reputation'. It might be simple enough to have Hero-Neutral-Jerk with no sliding bar or stat blocks.

If you insist on quantifying it, make it a 12-bar stat like the others except that it begins at nothing (or whatever is character-appropriate). From there, add towards one side or the other when milestones are reached. Naturally, acts of Heroism will subtract from Jerkiness and vice-versa. I'd stay away from the whole thing, honestly.

FIRST PLAY TEST COMPLETE: RULES UPDATES

Races of Ooo - Ooo has so many races, it would be impossible to list them all. The first perk at character creation is always your race, and may come with a single bonus feature. Some examples:
Tree People, or "Treeples" - Tree people are humanoids who dwell in the forests of Ooo. They have plant-like qualitities, and their skin tends toward shades of green. Tree people are nature-y and mellow. Treeples don't have to eat so long as they have sun and water, though they often do so because food is delicious.
Lumps - The residents of lumpy space as a pillowy, opinionated bunch. They lack legs, instead floating a few feet off the ground. They come in a wide variety of colors from pinks to blues and have a peculiar accent. Since they can float, they don't have to worry about things like spiky floors or pit traps.
Candy People - Citizens of the candy kingdom are a lighthearted, if sometimes dense folk. They come in all manner of shapes and sizes, covering every part of the confectionary rainbow. Candy people can heal themselves simply by dumping some sugar on their bodies or eating sugary treats...though it is wierd to see a cookie person eating a cookie. Does that count as cannibalism?
Weapons of Ooo -There are so many weapons in Ooo, it would be impossible to name them all. Instead, weapons fit into basic categories.
Small or jacked up weapon - 1 Damage (Dagger, Big Stick, Blunt Sword, Gumball Gun)
Mid sized or Normal weapon - 2 Damage (Sword, Club, Shortbow, Goblin Spear, Ice Shuriken)
Large or Awesome Weapon - 3 Damage (Big Sword, Ruby Dagger, Spear, Rifle, Ice-chucks)
Magic Weapon - 4 Damage (Wizard Staff, Gauntlet of Billy, 4th Dimensional Sword, Laser Gun)
    >> Necbromancer 05/22/11(Sun)20:43 No.15017333
Perks - Players get two perk at character creation. Perks can be anything and everything, based on what the character is and does. Your first perk determines your race, and the second determines a key starting ability. A perk can be used, at Adventure Master discretion, to grant circumstancial benefits to abilities or checks, grant new abilities, or represent finding Perks are awarded by the Adventure Master.
    Some Example Perks:

"A Sweet Kick!" - This perk gives a +3 strength bonus to the damage of your totally sweet kick. Bonus only applies to kicking things.

"Squishy" - This perk allows the character to squeeze into small spaces and fall from greater heights without getting hurt. You also make a good pillow.

"Dynamo"- This perk allows the character to stay up for days on end through the power of being extremely hyper. Dynamos go whole-hog on everything they do, even if it bothers the math out of people around them.

"Chk-Chk Armor" - This perk represents the character wearing some very Chk-chk armor. The character has +1 toughness while donning the armor.

"Big Fists" - This perk means the character has big, ham fists. This perk grants a +2 strength bonus to the damage of your beefy pummelings. You are also probably not going to play much guitar with your clumsy sausage fingers.

"Floating"- This perk means that, for whatever reason, you can float. You avoid ground hazards, and you probably don't wear out very many pairs of shoes, which can save you some money.

"Wrasslin!"- This perk means that your wrestling skills are superior. Not only are you good at wrestling, but you've got a sassy attitude to go with it. You gain a +2 bonus to your strength stat when wrestling.
    >> Necbromancer 05/22/11(Sun)20:44 No.15017338
Combat - Kicking monster butts in the land of Ooo is a simple affair. Monsters have the same stats and perks of their own, and are generated just like players. When combat begins, all the players and monsters roll initiative. The AM tallies the totals of each side, and the side with the higher score makes the first move. Players and monsters may move at any order during their side's turn, allowing them to coordinate all kinds of algabraic combo moves. Combat rounds are roughly 4-6 seconds in game time.

Getting Hurt - Adventuring is for tough dudes, and even they get hurt. When a character hits 0hp, they're knocked out cold. They wake up 1d6 rounds later, and regain 1/4 of their hp every hour after that.

Tied rolls go to the defender.

Moving Around - There are two ranges for combat in this game. Melee, and Ranged. When someone is in melee range of another person, they can't use ranged attacks on that person. And when someone is out of melee range of a person, they can't attack them with melee attacks. You may only move between ranges once a turn, and only for one target. To do so gives you a penalty of -2 to all attacks that turn. It's easy to remember, so you shouldn't forget. If you do, you might end up getting your butt whooped by someone with a better memory than you.

Getting Hurt - Adventuring is for tough dudes, and even they get hurt. When a character hits 0hp, they're knocked out cold. They wake up 1d6 rounds later, and regain 1/4 of their hp every hour after that.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/11(Sun)23:29 No.15018853
Sneaking About - This is less simple than some other things, but still pretty easy. When you're sneaking about, you need to be careful to not enter people's line of sight. If they're looking your direction, they can make a Notice Check, against your Stealth Check. If you win, you remain unseen. If you lose, you've been spotted! You can't hide again until you're out of that person's line of sight, so you'd better try and get away, or be ready to fight. Leaving someone's line of sight after remaining hidden also provokes a Notice Check. So be careful. If the person looks away, it doesn't count. You have to move yourself to be considered leaving their line of sight. If your Stealth Check and their Notice Check tie, you win. Use that to your advantage.

Let me lay out what I was originally thinking, as I think it may be much, much simpler than even what we've currently got.

My Original thought was to have the game work strictly on 2 rules - "The Rule of Cool" and "Rule 0" To demonstrate this, I made a character sheet...

Power Level: This would imply the character's experience or overall prowess. This is a "level" set by the AM at the start of an adventure, and increases at his whim, usually after the completion of a grand story arc.

    Examples:
    Adventurer - 18 stat points, 4 perks
    Hero - 20 stat points, 5 perks
    Champion - 22 stat points, 6 perks
    Legend - 24 stat points, 8 perks

Background: This serves as the multipurpose line for Race/Class/High Concept. Stuff like "Last Human Adventurer" "Muscle Wizard" or "The Dark Knight", these can be invoked by the player to use stats in different ways.

Example - The Muscle Wizard can use strength instead of focus when using spells.

Perks - Similar to Backgrounds, perks are traits or items that define the character, but are invoked with more specific uses with generally greater benefits. HOWEVER, these can also be invoked by the AM to incur a penalty.

Example - "Click-Click Armor": could be invoked by the player to reduce damage from an incoming physical attack. The AM could invoke it to give a penalty to an agile task, such as running, climbing, or swimming.

    >>15019401
yes, but this is even less math than FATE.

If Rick were to attack The Terr-esque, (a phony Tarrasque), with his axe, he would roll a d6 and need less than a 4 (for 4 STR) to hit and deal 4 damage (once again, 4 STR) on a hit.

Now, if Rick invokes "You Have My Axe" to hurl his axe at The Terr-esque, he can add his AWE to the damage.

Here's some example uses of Rick's Perks...

    Short Man Syndrome:
Player - Use AWE instead of SMO to intimidate or issue an order.
AM - Someone makes a short joke: Roll FOC, if failed, Rick gets offended. on a 6, Rick attacks that person.

    You Have My Axe
Player - Ranged Axe Attacks (add AWE to damage), Ricks defends adjacent character, dividing damage between him and whomever he protects.
AM - Rick will believe an ally who is lying, or defend an ally even if they've done something wrong. "Family First, dude."

    Draw The Line:
Player - Become anchored to the spot you stand, (Roll TOU to resist movement)
AM - Rick will not retreat, or may automatically invoke "Short Guy Syndrome" against a character for cowardly behavior.

    Utility Beard
Player - Roll AWE, success producea a useful item (a canteen, a lockpick, a car battery, ANOTHER axe)
AM - AWE failure can produce something dangerous. Weakness VS Fire

I dunno about you guys, but I think it's pretty damn cool, and fitting with the theme.
