Next Friday I am going to a game of Humans VS. Zombies at some campground way out in the sticks. Nerf and boffer weapons will be used, with the winner being the last man standing.

    The prize is pic related.

I will do anything to win, /tg/. I would sell my mother into slavery and shoot my best friend's dog to moderately improve my chances.

I have LARPed before, but never have the stakes been this high. Tell me your war stories. Your victories and failures, and the times that left you dumbstruck.

I used to play back in high school but we did a kinda VIP thing where you have two human captains who have nerf swords and if they both die then the humans lose. For the humans to win they need to kill patient zero and as long as he is alive the zombies respawn at a certain location across the giant forest/field we played in, then they need to kill the remaining zombies. We were divided into squads lead by the captains.

I have a bunch of stories. You guys want to hear them?

Okay so we played in a forest/field with a giant hill where the humans start playing. Only two way up the hill cause the other sides were 70% slopes. So my friend was captain of our squad and I was assigned sergeant of the squad. The zombies and humans are in a 1 to 1 ratio.

The zombies spawn about 100 yards from the base of the hill, and hill itself was 200 yards from the base to the top. So we positioned both squads and watched the 25 guys bum rush up the hill. We held the top of the hill for about 15 waves until one rogue zombie snuck around through the forest and attacked from the rear.

After this happened shit hit the fan. The zombies attacked from all sides and would rush forward and pull back to make us waste our ammo(about 200 rounds per man). After 15 waves of this we were almost out of ammo, so I was ordered to take the squad down the hill and collect ammo off the ground.

What we didn't know is that about 10 zombies had hidden themselves in the brushes half way up the hill and were waiting for us.
    >> Anonymous 05/12/11(Thu)21:56 No.14908222
It's time to get tactical. Grab yourself one of these and remove the air restrictor. You'll get better range and power that way. Grab one of the drum magazines from the raider, and load it with the streamline darts. The rest of your magazines should just be the 18-round ones that come with the stampede. Attach a bayonet to the front to ward off zombies and to stab unsuspecting humans in the back. Get yourself a ghillie suit (they aren't hard to make) and wait it out.

    I used A FUCKING SPEAR.

No zombie was able to get past my spear without getting three quick thrusts to the chest.

As we were sent down the hill, the second squad was went down the other side of the hill to check the tree line for any ambush or rogue zombies that may attack while the main group rushed us. So we had 3 people spotting at the top of the hill. out of a 24 man group.

I lead the my squad half way down the hill and we started filling our ammo pouches. I watched the tree line as the privates and corporals started grabbing ammo. I noticed that the tree line where the zombies respawned was empty.

Then I heard a shout. One of the privates had gone to the brushes where a larger than normal pile of darts was sitting. The zombies then burst from the bushes from my left and right. Luckily for me I was an ammo conservationist and had 50% of my supply still while most of my squad had less than 5 rounds each. They quickly burned through that and I started losing men left and right.

I heard what sounded like Orks while I was fighting and saw from the tree line all the zombies burst out and ran full speed at me. I had about 10 seconds before they were on us.

I have one of those. Wired it for 16v 7200mAh RC car batteries, makes for great RoF and a reduced delay before the gun actually fires.

Raider drum makes the stampede awkward to fire right handed, so stick with the 18 round mags.

Keep a few stray darts around so you can top up your mags when in a safe zone or similar circumstances.

Since you are allowed boffer weapons, get a long one, this makes sure you don't end up running out of ammo and having no way to keep the zombies at range.

We had finished up the ambush zombies right before the main group attacked. My men had no ammo. It was a slaughter. In about 10 seconds I was down to 2 men. They had played it safe and were closer to the top of the hill. So it was now me and 2 guys vs about 14 zombies(humans changed as soon as they got tagged).

Being the only one with more than 10 rounds I started spamming down at the zombies. But they still out numbered us. We began retreating to the top in military fashion of me firing and the two retreating then I would fallback and they would cover me. About 3/4 up the hill I heard quite possibly the scariest and awe inspiring thing ever.

I turned around and saw my captain with sword in hand rushing down from the top with his two guards.

He ran past me right into the group of zombies and started 40k style against them. Seeing this I rushed after him and started firing into the group.

My captain took out 3 zombies in the first swing. 2 in the 2nd and another 1 in the third. He was however surrounded still. As a zombie approached from his rear he pulled out his sidearm and fired it's single shot into the zombie's chest.

The two guards had fully loaded vulcans and finished off the remaining zombies.

This all failed in comparison to what happened next though.

The university where I played this had a bad experience with a game of Assassin the previous year, and confined the field of play to the dorm and the area immediately around it.

It turned the whole thing into a much more stealth-oriented game, heavily reliant on deceit and misdirection in order to navigate the hall without being flanked by a group of zombies. It was interesting, but I'd love it if they expanded the game to cover the whole campus. It'd be a logistical nightmare, but DAMN it'd be fun. I just want to draw my Maverick and have a shoot-out in the middle of the bus stop.

So we had lost almost our whole squad in 2 minutes and we knew they would return. So we grabbed as much ammo as we could and picked up some extra guns from our fallen brothers. One of which was a nerf sniper rifle, a longshot one I believe.

We then regrouped at the top of the hill and I told my captain what happened. We then ran to the other side of the hill to find the second squad.

They were no where in sight.

We now knew we had to retreat into the forest. Lucky for us the forest wasn't well lite like the hill was (we played at 9pm to make it more stealthy). So we ran into the forest and as we made it to the edge of the tree line we could see the well lite hill with zombies swarming it.

So we ran deep into the forest. 15 minutes of running and we turned right to find try and find the front of the hill. We had found stray zombies hiding in the forest. Our captain executed them with his sidearm.

As we kept going closer to the zombies' spawn we found zombies who were from the second squad and assumed the worst.

Then off in the distance we saw a bright light.

We thought it was a trap clearly, then one of the privates handed me a pair of night vision goggles. Apparently they were the shitty one from the Call of Duty packs. I gave him a weird stare thanked him and promoted him to corporal.

Looking through them I saw 9 men around a bright floodlight. I handed them to my captain and he noticed that they had a huddled around a small gorge in the forest. Then we saw them. About 2 dozen zombies attacked them from all sides.

They hand a great position and the zombies would die in the gorge since it was steep and hard to come out. So most of them rushed from the one side forming a nice bottleneck effect.

Their captain was at the front, taking out zombies left and right. This man was a true warrior, in an earlier game he held the top of the hill for 4 hours with 6 men against 20 zombies.

We had decided to help out by attacking the zombies in stealth and taking them out from bushes and in the trees. After fighting off these zombies we quickly regrouped with the second squad.

We were told they had held up here after the swarm that attacked us respawned and attacked them in the forest.

They found this place and sent out 2 scouts to find the special infected. Only one returned along with this giant swarm.

But we now knew where the special infected was.

I was the leader of a squad of humans at my college campus's Humans Versus Zombies game.

We communicated solely by a secret list of commands in Icelandic, used to indicate the location of zombies nearby.

We never ran; tight cover and a light jog is better than letting yourself get spaced out, separated, and killed. If an area looked like a prime ambush spot, we would carefully check it out, being sure to cover all available angles.

Raiders are effective weapons; no start-up time, quick fire ability, and an ease to switching out magazines, be they drum or short six-shot ones.

Be sure to have socks with you. If a zombie gets to close, a sock is the best thing to throw. They are unbelievable useful, and people who rely entirely on Nerf weapons are missing an effective tool in their arsenal.

Always carry a spare weapon; make sure that your gear is balanced on your body, and that you are able to draw everything quickly. Straps on two-handed weapons, holsters for one-handers.

A string attached to the back of a Maverick allows you to fire and cock them one-handed. Place the string on your body, just slightly longer than your usual firing stance. Make sure you have TOTAL firing mobility for this. You can rock two at once, but it's not suggested.

If they allow swords, use them. Nothing kills zombies faster than removing their advantage of close up.

Finally, we always marched while singing Regin SmiĆ°ur. Each man had a set of verses, we all took the chorus.

We were death, and even the zombies learned to fear us.

Now the special infected is much stronger than the normal zombies and take 10 hits to bring down since there is only one of him.

We had decided to hold our gorge base with both captains remaining here while me and 5 of the remaining men from both squads with me leading them. We had one goal, kill the lead zombie or die trying to. We had been given the best guns we had and all our ammo bags were stuffed to the max.

I had assigned Mr. Call of Duty on point and we had rushed out to find the zombie respawn through the dead of night in the forest. 5 minutes of marching through the forest stealthily we heard a shouting from the direction of the camp we just left.

So we waited until we saw one of the zombies who died and was returning to the camp and followed him.

We had no idea what was going to happen next.

Also, bring a sidearm. Maverick is too unreliable, get a nightfinder. Shit, get two, keep em' loaded. Fuck the longshot, it isn't that good.
Consider a Big Bad Bow as a long range weapon, if you can find it.

If you listen, you will win.

How do you guys deal with the possibility of members of your group getting turned into zombies? Because that was one of the biggest reasons why the human survivors went solo for the game, they couldn't risk partners spilling their schedule and plans to the other side if they got turned.

    Also, one last note.
If you are willing to go full asshole and you have a little time, I suggest you procure a lanard big blast or a buzzbee big blast. Remove the air restrictors and replace the barrel with something that will fit streamline darts. Sometimes, the missile peg will fit darts with no modifications.

The massive air output will send a single dart flying a massive distance.
Or you could build an array of barrels, and have a shotgun.
Oh fuck me I nearly forgot about my favorite gun of them all

    the LANARD BIG SALVO
Four air tanks, each one with enough power to launch a rocket a good forty feet.

With standard cpvc fittings and minor knowhow, you can convert it into an eight barreled harbinger of death, with each stage of the trigger releasing two darts. If you didn't mind a bit less range, you could go for tri-splitting the barrels, and get 12 rounds off within a second.

Reload time and air pump time would be hell, so not exactly a primary, but fuck if I don't love the big salvo.

We lived in the same house, a decent way across campus, and had fairly similar schedules due to how our work life worked. Plus two of the guys were hardcore parkour nuts and could run like nothing else. We stuck to working in groups.

If someone headed out on their own, then they were expected to deal with things on their own, as well. Our six-man squad wasn't the end-all, either: we'd dicked around with enough training that we could work nearly as well in 2 and 3 man squads.

After our first semester, however, one of the admins developed a raging hate-on for us, even to the point of just blatantly mailing out what he thought were our schedules and usual areas to the 'zombie-only' list. All because we were making fun of his shitty, in-joke riddled storyline that favored a scant few players that were his friends, the fact he blatantly cheated, and once gave a 'zombie antidote' to a chick he was trying to sleep with because she didn't like being a zombie.

That year, when the third mission came, we all had a single-shot pistol with us. Walked up to a zombie horde, yelled "Death before dishonor!" and shot ourselves in the heads. Immediately tagged, and then proceeded to be a terrifying squad of zombies.

We followed the zombie till we saw a group of 30 zombies all grouped together listening to one guy clearly marked with a blue bandanna, making him the leader. We were about 30 yards away hidden in a bush on the side of a small hill.

They out numbered us 5 to one but we clearly had more than enough fire power than we need to have.
I myself had two vulcans and the L shot I found still.

We watched them for 10 minutes while I came up with a plan. I had a moment of cleverness and realized that we had surprise on them and they were in a giant mob that was subject to mass hysteria.

So our plan was to surround them in divided groups and take selective fire to cause the group to break apart and confuse them.

Mr CoD handed me a whistle and we began to move to our planned positions.

Our number one problem was that the zombies could respawn almost instantly so we had to lure them out. (they needed to touch some tree to respawn)

So after 5 minutes I blew the whistle and what followed was the weirdest and most crazy fire fight I had ever seen. What was suppose to happen was that I blew the whistle and the zombies would come at me and I would start firing, then 10 seconds later the person on the opposite of me would start firing into the group. Then 10 seconds later the person perpendicular to the group would fire and then the person closer to me then the person closer to them opposite side. Then the last guy would run through the group after they went back to respawn and run to the hill again.

So we started then and the plan was working flawlessly until the last man started to run through and but in the chaos of the fire fight the special infected slipped away and hid. As the last man ran through he was tagged by the special infected. Now we had no way to lure the zombies away so I put the whistle into my mouth ran into the group and started blowing it.

Then I turned and ran to the hill.

I modded my recon to a slugga, personally. Cut and glued two 6-dart mags to make a 12-to-15-if-you-want-to-risk-jamming mag, (in the days when they only had the 6-dart ones) plated that with thick plastic to keep it from breaking (and for cosmetics), removed ARs, pumped up the spring. Jams like a slugga should, bangs like a slugga should, weighs twice as much as stock on account of the thick plastic plating on the magazine, has enough force that with the barrel extension it can fire four darts lined up and still have decent range. And it looks like a slugga.

I ran to the hill and started running up the side till I got the top. Apparently almost all the zombies followed me. So about a good 25 of them plus the special infected.

I let my two vulcans fall slack on their slings and drew the Lshot and start firing until the clip emptied with all but one round hitting a zombie.

So the group of zombies still rushing me with the special infected at the back of the group shouting at them to get me. I dropped the Lshot and grabbed my still 3/4 filled vulcans and started firing like crazy.

I killed all of the group and still had about 10 shots loaded in total. Then the special zombie seeing all the guys run back down the hill to respawn decided to rush me.

My first shot hit him in the chest, the second in the arm, the 3rd in the leg, the fourth missed, the 5th missed also, the sixth hit him in the chest, the 7th hit him in the shoulder. While this is happening I was running backwards while he quickly closed the gap.

I dropped my vulcans and turned to run when he was about 10ft out when I tripped over a rock and rolled down the other side of the hill.

I layed on the ground and saw him walking at me.

    Fuck.

He started to gloat as he closed the last 10ft to me at the base of the hill. Saying my attempt had be glorious but in vain. He leaned over and said to my face that I was finished I that we had lost.

But as he leaned over I saw the most glorious sight ever.

My captain was standing behind him and drawn his sword and held it above the special infected like Link held the Master Sword after he pulled it out of the sword.

He stabbed the zombie in the back right before I was tagged. The zombie fell to the ground and RPed a death fit for the scene.

My captain pulled me up off the ground, handed me his side arm and said "Did you enjoy your nap?"

We then went and hunted down the surviving zombies. I heard that the remaining members of my attack squad held the line until the other captain saved them.

When we had the vote for the next game's captain, Mr CoD and I were elected and we had a glorious game that followed this epic one.

I'm not overly familiar with the HvZ rules, but I do LARP with nerf guns and boffer weapons, so I would like to offer the following advice. If it's allowed to put the Raider drum in another gun, do so. Reloading during a fight without having someone to cover you will get you killed, and six shots doesn't always cut it. While the Raider's slam-fire is great, the ranges are pretty bad and the accuracy is garbage. There are a lot of Longshot mods online that you can use, but there are two problems. First, you have to find a Longshot. Second, the Longshot is awful if you haven't modded the internals. It jams up, chews darts, and wastes air pressure. And if you mod it, be careful and reinforce it. The best mods for distance and accuracy will break the internals. Then there's the issue of cutting/filing brass tubing. If you have the time and money, then by all means, get your hands on a Longshot. If not, get a Stampede. Get at least two Raider drums. I know that some Toys R Us stores sell a Raider that comes with two drums. Get a pack of extra darts while you're there. You WILL lose some. Get the bandolier (or make one with a luggage strap) to steady your aim. Get a shotgun shell bag from Wal-Mart to store your extra drum, ammo, and a sidearm (preferably a Barricade).

This also needs to be said: get two boffer weapons, or the sword/board combo. Your weapon will fuck up at an inopportune time. Jams can't be cleared and batteries can't be replaced in combat.

If there is any night-time combat going on, get dark grey clothing. It blends in much better with the shadows than black. Make use of all the cover you can. Move quickly and quietly. Learn to serpentine. And if you smoke, realize that there's a time and a place. Hell, switch to snus for the weekend if you can.

Finally and most importantly: when you win, /tg/ had damn well better see a picture of you holding this thing in a Commissar outfit.

I'm fond of bungee-cord crossbows. Fire the standard arrows the Big Bad Bow nerf launcher uses, only they launch them far, far further.

I've had one of those and it made for wonderful sniping of groups. Not a high rate of fire, but with range and accuracy, you can often pepper a zombie group with range and impunity.

Surgical tubing is way better for that. I've made an arsenal of crossbows out of 2x4's and surgical tubing, and all of them shoot at least 70 feet.

The only thing about surgical tubing is that it dries out over time. Bungee cords can get similar range and are much less prone to going *snap* at a bad time. But either is a decent choice, YMMV.

Real bowstrings will wear out like that too, so I just make sure I always have extras.

It doesn't seem like it would take too much work to change a game of Zombies Vs. Humans to Orks Vs. Guardsmen.

But then you're just playing airsoft with a theme.

And that's fundamentally different than ZvH how?

Zombies don't usually shoot back man.

Feral orks, choppy orks, kommando orks. All kinds of orks don't shoot back, or do it close range only, and those that do shoot aren't usually that accurate. It's workable.

Ooh this thread is still alive.
