So, Old LARP story or New LARP story?

The New one is pretty spiffy, and was stickied.

I managed to get one of my friends to start browsing tg because I showed him the Nephem story.

He called me yesterday, telling me there was a great Larp story on tg, and succeeded in disappointing me. It was okay, in a very okay way, but it didn't match my hopes...

The Nephem ones on /tg/ show a lot more effort- I can actually believe that's a LARP.

The one stickied the other day was pretty much fail for actually resembling a LARP in just about every other "detail" in the story, and just...well, it wasn't as well written.

You want a "LARP story" that very much could have been, the older two-parter on suptg is great (and well written). This recent one wasn't, but I'll give them points for trying.

Oh, I know the Nephem ones are fictional. The point is, they're GOOD fiction. Most of what you read in there is either actually in US LARPs I've played in- or close enough to be very, very reasonable or doable.

The story yesterday wasn't. The game read more like a disjointed unholy union of your average MMORPG and a really bad "No shit, here I was" story.

I mean, that was beyond "shitty US LARP" (and I've seen those) straight into "this just doesn't work"...

It is, at least according to the author.

Near the very beginning, he mentions the backstab skill (the one that multiplies damage by 5) as one that he got with extra points and he wasn't even particularly excited about.

From that point on, I read the story with a grain of salt.

The new one had a lot of personality, as every third sentence was the OP's opinion on something or a quip about one of his friends, and it was rather distinct in a lot of ways.

But, I don't think I particularly liked that personality. Though it was humorous at times, the majority was swing-and-miss humor. Even so, the narrator seemed like a decent person, the kind I could hang out with but I'm not certain I'd call a friend.

Usually you take the hits, even if you ruleswise would'nt go down, when you're tired. That reminds me of a little thing that happened to me a few years back.

Me and a Friend wanted to check out a new major LARP in our country which was said to have a nice location... We took a special deal for NPC roles as this cost us like 10 euro each (where PCs would have payed 60euro+ at that time)
I dunno how these LARPS are called in english, but the idea is to have several camps that try and compete in sieges and battles for flags, which give points when delivered to a special place... Pretty lame background and goal, but that doesn't hinder your fun...

We ended up on the 'OT camp grounds' as our tent wasn't good enough for the IT part, so technically we had our stuff outside of our camp.

One Morning, we were woken up by some really loud battle sounds, me and another bro snatched our stuff and ran to our camp, which had already fallen to hostile hands. Two camps had attacked us at dawn and got two flags we had in our camp.

    cont' in next post...

So me and my bro walked right into a huge angry mob of Goodie-two-shoes and Wannabe-Vikings that currently talked about how to kill our camp leader.
First our plan was to somehow get close to their leader, take him hostage and get our leader out alive... we could get close to him, but he was wearing good armor and we would never succeed with these many guys around us...

But then a new chance to do some damage arose. We could move free in the huge group of enemies, they didn't take any notice of us... we had little pieces of clotch with our camp-emblem, but me and my bro tugged it into our belts.
We watched our leader get killed and listened how they banter over the winners arguing who'd get which flag, then they parted. The Paladin guys (heavy armor and a lot of warriors) left and me and my bro were left with a group of 8 vikings carrying the flag back to the ritual grounds were the points would be awarded.

    Our goal was clear.
The moment we would come close to the ritual grounds, I would try to grab the flag and run off with it to award my camp with the points...
So I put away my heavy cloak and sword and handed it to my friend and talked to the guy carrying the flag...
So I asked him this and that, mainly smalltalk about nonsense, asked him how he liked the battle, if he slew someone... stuff like that.
We came around the last bent and could already see the ritual grounds when the guy asked the one million dollar question.
"From which camp are you anyway? You don't look like Paladins...."
I paused... just a moment, but I couldn't come up with a good answer as this came out of nowhere... This little pause was enough for him to check me out for the first time... he noticed my stupid campbadge and was just about to go "OH SHIT" when I yelled "For the Green Comet!" at the top of my lungs, hurled myself forward and grab the flag...
I have to say... I got a good 3 meters before the flag broke and the guy struck me at the back with his axe...

Unfortunately, it didn't go as planned but the guys (after killing me and stabbing me a bajillion times after that) went "Well, that was fucking awesome, thanks".

Seriously.... that shit won't happen twice to me.

As matter of fact, just the same day in the night I did bullshit my way out of a little situation.

Our camp had a quest to find some McGuffin to get points, the Vikings had said item.
So in a huge Night-fight, we tried to kill them and look for the artifact.
It was glorious... our enemies took a steep hill that was much to steep for our heavy soldiers to climb up. With their shield-wall at the only entrance, they thought themselves to be safe.
Little did they know our troops (including me) were slowly climbing up the hill at the side and suddenly we flanked them with the force of an angry gods fist.
I had no armor (and would go down in one hit) but I fought valliantly, jumped and dodged like a madman.
In the end we won the fight, but our enemies ran away... one of which was the guy we suspected to be the one carrying the artifact as he was some high-position guy...

If short larp stories about being sneaky and things:
Me and my group were mercenaries, so the town hired us to against team evil. Team evil was in fact in a fortress and the town literally hired everyone against them. So when we marched out against team evil there were he townguards, us and four other group.
We were the smallest group whit six people.
Before the fight the commander come to us and say he trust us the most and we have to guard the back of the army because there are still bandits around here.
We kept a straight face because Team Evil hired us too and they had more money.
So we take up position and wait for the start of the siege.

storywise, me and two other clansmen went to assault some Woads (forest people. bloody savages...) and naturally, when we surprised them they were all on a hill with bows...and they were ten people.
    basically it went: CHAAAARGEEE!

He ran to the closest allied camp, went to the gate (which was closed) and yelled something about the green comet attacking him and stuff. I'd like to add, the Green Comet NPC camp was meant to be the ultimate BBEGs... so yeah.
Anyway, I was the first one to catch up...
That guy: "QUICK! They're on my tail and want to kill m-"
At around that point, my sword struck him as I dashed out of the shadows, knocked him to the ground and yelled "You won't rat out others another time"...
At that point, I noticed two or three guys, one with a crossbow on the gate looking down on me.
They asked me what I was doing...
So I told them some bold lie about being from a neutral camp and he had stolen something of great importance... I checked for the artifact (which he didn't have ... fuck!) and casually strolled away from the Paladins camp.

I know, not great tales of larping galore, but it was kinda awesome and fun when it happened...

    Stealth, huh?

At one point, I ended up in the middle of a diplomatic event that went horribly wrong- instead of a peace treaty between the orcs and the other races, someone stuck an arrow through the orc diplomat and his retinue gutted a town's worth of people.

Me, I ended up getting beaten into a crippled pulp and tumbled down the hill the ceremony was one, crawling under a bush and just becoming one with the leaf mold as the screaming and maiming died down to the occasional scream as the orcs found someone who was playing dead and made sure they stopped playing. Fortunately, by the time they got all the way through those it'd gotten a bit dark and instead of finding me, an orc boot bounced off my head and encouraged me to remain still (and dazed IRL).

So the siege starts and our cleric runs into the fight to heal others. He was the only one who don't know about the thing between us and team evil. Me and my friend are "veteran" larpers, the other three guy in the team were new ones. In fact that was their first larp. So they were nervous and asked when will we backstab the others. We simply leaned against a tree as we watched the battle and said:
"Why should we? We doesn't even know yet who will win..."
As it turns out Team Evil hired up everyone too, as the town did. But they "forgot" to tell this things to the other teams so there was a fucking big chaos, everyone against everyone.
And we just stand there waiting, if there was a wounded people then we rushed to aid him, dragged back behind the bushes and stabbed him. And after the cleric doesn't had any more spells then we stabbed him too.
All in all, we were the only team that survived the fight and of course Team Evil...

The orcs then spent the next half hour or so mocking their (few, cowardly, surrendering) prisoners while I recovered enough to crawl out into the darker woods and then sneak down the path towards town. This was interrupted first by a pack of orcs walking back to tell the town what they were going to receive (said prisoners), then the line of dejected PC's and noisy orcs, and finally when I was almost to the end of the path, a rescue party trying to find me after they realized I wasn't safe OR a prisoner.

Nothing like the absolute terror in the dark of hearing voices calling you out, thinking you were found and are going to suffer a long bout of slow, tortured death...and realizing when they kindle a light that it's your friends, who'd been searching all over for you.

They then escorted my bloody, battered self back to the town, where my survival did wonders for my reputation as being a tough, wily bastard of a warrior. (Fighting with daggers instead of any reasonable weapon didn't hurt for macho points, either.)
I've never hugged a grown man that hard in my life.

    Another funny story.
Me, and my previously mentioned friend played Team Evil in a different larp with four other guy (well one of them was a girl but whatever)
We were VERY powerful. So powerful that the six of us could stand a chance against 20-30 other ordinary people. We were full of magic and things like that.
So from another camp comes a messenger and says that they want peace and whatnot. Sure whatever we will be there.
It was painfully obvious for us and for the messenger that there won't be any peace negotiation. In fact EVERYBODY knew that this will be a fight. Befor we get there we killed some random guy we found turned him into a demon then brought him with us.
There he dropped to all fours we placed a blanket at him and after that h was the "table". Of course we told him that when we giv him the signal he have to attack the other guys.

So the other guys come with a complete shield wall weapons at ready, stuff like that. We just doesn't give a fuck, chill out offer tha other leader to take a seat. Ohh you didn't brought a seat with you? Thats too bad we can wait for it. After all we are not that rude.
So they brought a seat for their leader and meanwhile the bodyguards poke our "table" and asks what the fuck is this. As you can figure it out it was the shittiest table in the universe and everybody knew that there is a person underneath it.
But here comes the funny part. My friend, our leader with the most natural voice and he straightest face said:
"I am so powerful that if I say to one of my servants to be my table at a negotiation then he will be the table."
And that was it. It was simply so big bullshit that nobody questioned it.
Later the talking took a loooooong time. And when I say long time I mean that the two leader talked so much bullshit that they sent for drinks twice.

And when the bodyguards got bored we just simply raped them. Thats all.

    let's see another larp story...
Ah yes! There was a fallout larp where I was a ghoul technician. There was an autodoc in one of the buildings that I repaired at the start of the game but it needed energy cells to work. And I was the one who could start the autodoc.
So one time I just eating in the third floor of the building (the autodoc was in the first floor) when someone comes up and says that I needed at the autodoc. Yeah sure, i'm coming.
When I get there there is a fucking chaos.
There are at least ten people in the room, one of them is a doctor who can operate the autodoc, one random guy who lies in a table, a fuckton of tribesmen and another ghoul who argues with the tribesmen.
There where shouting, spears, shouting, knifes, more shouting and of course guns. Did I mentioned the shouting?

I used to play a wimpy, naive little scholar who was happiest getting his nose into spellbooks and learning more about how the (game) world worked- dragons and demons and ley lines and what have you.

Well, the master of the mage's circle I was in was away, and lo and behold, the other two apprentices decided to have a party there while he was gone. I woke up from a nap to find all SORTS of interesting people talking and conversing...mostly about the finer points of black sorcery and necromancy.

Seems my fellow apprentices had also gotten membership with the local necromancers. Oops.

One of my brother-prentices came up, a rounded loud and cheerful fellow and insisted "no, nothing's wrong, you won't say a word will you" and as I began to berate him for being a fool, a dagger pommel won the argument by clouting me in the back of the skull. I came to next to a balcony with brother-prentice #2, a tall thinner guy holding me and saying "Keep still."

Thank the High Lord, I had a friend in need.

He then announces to the black-robed partygoers that they've taken care of the annoying little twit who interrupted their party, and nobody'll expect to find his body where it's going...and dumps me over the edge of a balcony.

Briefly, I realize that free fall is kind of nice. Then I find out what ground feels like. Or rather, I find out what the boulder under the balcony in the darkness feels like, as a stone fist punches me in my back.

Thankfully, I used to wear a metal-plated vest as a nod towards not having my guts ripped out by random monsters, and the impact spreads itself across the vest rather than my ribs, leaving a nice round dent in the plate. I do a very convincing job of a broken corpse while trying to discover if I still have kidneys and not blood pudding for organs.

So I was "OMFG WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING WHY THE FUCK AM I HERE?!?!?!?!!!!", but I kept my cool as always, then one guy says they need me to start the autodoc. I nod go to the autodoc and VERY slowly pack out my tools and try to figure out what the fuck is happening. As I find out the tribesmen want to cut of the genitals from the random human that lies on the table and they want to transplant it into the other ghoul. But they can't do his without the autodoc.
So the fun part: the energy cells were actual batteries that looked like energy cells. They had voltage in them and the autodoc needed the energy for work. If you put a dry battery on it it simply don't work. So what did the peaceful ghoul mechanic do? I short-circuited the fuck out of every energy cell they gave me as sneaky as possible.
Then I just gave them back saying "sorry these energy cells are depleted, I can't start the autodoc with these, you need to get fresh ones."

And the day was saved! Except they killed the human when they left but whatever, I can't save everybody.

I continue to enjoy the cool air on my face and finish inventorying my non-broken bits for a few minutes, then drag myself into the shrubbery by the door.

Round-and-loud comes out with his new friends, looks at the bare spot where I was "dying" claps his hands that I've finished bleeding to death like a good chap, "so we best be off to finish this before he comes back" and merrily trots off into the woods with his buddies.

I later find out I'd nearly ruined his chance at lichdom, something he managed to hide for years afterwards with a few cunning disguises and spells before revealing himself as a "Master of the Undead".

Tall-and-thin by comparison just managed to get possessed by an ancient warlock trapped in a skull and spent his remaining days swapping between kindly sorcerer and loony warlock spirit riding the body, until it finally broke his mind completely for Chaos. Either way, I had the worst study partners ever...then again, I ended up mad AND undead (not in that order) by the end of it, so what do I know?

Whatever you wear, make sure it's not plain. If it's a helmet, it darn well better be shiny and with a feather or two. If it's a hat, jeweled and feathered. Officers are supposed to stand out in the crowd, the better for the common trooper to know they're stuck in and boosting morale.

(And of course a better target, but that's the price of leading from the front and pulling the bigger pile of pay/loot.)

Take the helmet. Wrap a nice fancy band of cloth around it- silk or some other bit of pricy goodness. Stick a pin with a big ol' semiprecious gemstone (or for LARP, a paste gem) with a nice big peacock plume in it.

Officers showed off the bling. Looking good = status and respect. Even a kettle helmet can be made to look proper. For bonus points, paint and gild the thing in the company colors, even if the gilding is just making the rivets all nice and golden. The point is to stand out from the rest of the slobs, to show that you get the best money, the best girls at the brothels, and the fancy loot that led you to being highly placed in your commander's trust (if not the commander yourself, for which looking fancy is even more important).

If you can find a shirt that's "slashed" to show a second color under the red, do it. Being able to afford different kinds of cloth rather than a simple single one is another sign of "I've got money". So that second option? Good call. Ditto with the breeches, if you can manage them.

we rarely do that. Main problem is that in this country everyone is a poorfag. I mean we just can't afford it. It's somehow affordable if we make the things ourselves, but it's even worse for those who still study and don't have a work.
    But we somehow survive...

But I think half the fun is to make your own equipment.

I mean you have to find these guys on the internet ask them about these things and maybe tell them where you live so they can make suggestions.

Well my apprenticeship is actually in tattooing (not smithing, I just have an interest in it as a hobby), but doing some you enjoy for work is great, so as long as friends cover the costs of materials (maybe make a small profit) it's fine.

Of course I understand tattooing is a whole different ball game to being a blacksmith.

Nice guy, for someone who plays the guy who can beat just about anything into a pulp if he thinks it's needed...but is cool (and old vet) enough not to go around randomly stomping shit cause he wants a fight. Amazing thing is he's still got the same character he plays regularly since the first game he went to, plus two others- none of which managed to perm-death.

We were in the UN camp the UN guarded us because... well I don't really know, In game all we know that our village were bombed, the UN rescued us then put in a camp and we had to sit there. So naturally we did a few funny thing.
Like we brew "vodka from used tractor tires"
It was basically water that tasted like plastic bag then we put in it a one year old spice package for chicken soup. After that some energy drink, salt and mint tea. It was godawful and when we finished it we tried to give it to the soldiers.
The soldiers quickly learned to things: no drinking while on duty, and they are always on duty when we are around.

In the morning a few of us, civilians left the camp to salvage the ruins of the village. We managed to bump into another military camp and there was a fuckton of sign like "DANGER! Mine field!" and "If you can read these you are in my scope", things like that. So because we were simple russian refugees I just picked up one that said mine field (funny thing is the minefield had a trodden path) and I brought back to one of the nearby military guy and asked. What the fuck is it saying? You see I'm a simple russian civilian and I don't know he english language... I mean... Customers, so please see my Russian civilians. Briefing, I know English!
It was so big bullshit it simply paralyzed the guy and finally he explained to me what was the sign saying. And nobody shoot us down!

Another fun thing was when the PMC camp hired us to clear their building. Like, with brooms and shit like that.
At first we was okay we will do it I mean we need the money. But then suddenly guns everywhere. Two PMC always watched us with guns ready while we swept the floor. We thought they will kill us when we finished. So we did it as slow as possible. And stoled a few gasmasks meanwhile. Why not?
But at the end we were surprised that nobody killed us (again) and they even paid us! Of course we had to take out the trash too.
Now you see we don't want to litter in the gaming field so we just brought it with us to the UN camp where we can dump in the trash can.
BUT! The guards at the UN camp suddenly got batshit crazy when they heard we were at the PMC camp cleaning and the bag full of rash is from there. They was like "You can't bring this in, it could be a bomb!" Also they wanted to search the trash. But, that was MY trash. So they can't search it until they paid for it! It was broad daylight and a dozen of civilians were around so beat the fuck out of me was out of question for a UN soldier. And thats the story how I sold a bag of rubbish.

As a larper the Nephem vs Ulcik story fell to me someone writing a story in a larp setting. There were lots of things in that story that would not gel well in real life.

That said it still was a good story.

The story involving The Commander vs Pecock To me was not well written but fell like someone recalling an adventure with friends. To me it had the money could not buy feel to it which made it an entertain read.

btw did I mentioned that at the morning we had to pee but the UN soldiers were like "No, you can't go out it very dangerous. There could be snipers out there."
So at the end three of us took a piss in the field with five fully armed UN soldier guarding us.
Best piss I ever took. It's somehow changed my life.

There's a reason why bathrooms are a 100% always out-of-game area in every game I've been in.

And that is there's many things I will do for a LARP, but I will not fall over "dead" in mid-piss because someone shanked me in the back while my pants were down. Or die squatting on the toilet, unless it's Elvis: The RPG.

Cause....eww. Just. Eww. Toss me off buildings, throw me down hills, bounce me off shields running at full speed, have a semi-pro wrestler pick me up by the throat and toss me ass-first into a pile of gravel. I've done all that. But not that.

Sequel to this one: I'm walking back to the mage's circle the next month, and a fellow I recognize from the local guild of "merchants" (read: "merchants liberally mixed with thieves and assassins") is sitting by the side of the road. I walk by.

A throwing knife proceeds to *BANG* off my back (he even managed to hit me right where the dent was from last time), which should do enough damage to kill an unarmored little scholar dead. Of course, he didn't realize I was actually wearing armor under my clothes...and was rather shocked when I didn't react much to the knife sticking in the back of my clothing (the foam knife having neatly wedged itself between two plates).

I turn around and give him the evil eye. He then proceeds to say "If you say ANYTHING about last month, you're a dead man!"- while still trying to figure out why little Saul isn't flat on his face and dying like a good victim.

I pull the knife out and hand it back to him, not saying a word, and stalk off down the path. Now, the town has two bars at the time. One is the Five Lions, where everyone can go and be relatively safe.

The other one is the Rat's Nest. Nice people who went into the Rat's Nest didn't come out unless they had a very respectable (and not so nice) couple of bodyguards, at least- rogues, evil mages, necromancers, and worse called it their watering hole, and woe to whoever visited.

I decided it was time to cleanse it of as much scum and villainy as possible and detoured for the Rat's Nest...only to look inside and find nobody was there.

Apparently, evil was afoot somewhere else. No worries there. One of the first spells I'd learned as an apprentice is a simple "start a piece of wood on fire" incantation, and I had a respectable mana pool. Enough for, oh, a few DOZEN castings of that spell.

Lovingly tossing little spell packets to mark where my pyromania was to take form, I proceeded to ignite the wooden roof shingles in a dozen places, then the bar in a half-dozen more where the booze was, and every table for good measure.

And walked away, found a game marshal, and informed him what I'd done.

Five minutes later, most of the local gang of "merchants" was frantically finding buckets for water as the Rat's Nest went up like a tinderbox. Horrible accident, that.

The next month, a ruling was made in the game's newsletter that all major buildings were fireproofed against that sort of thing. Go figure.

kinda sucks, but I can see why they wouldnt want to dismantle an entire tavern.
this is why low magic is the way to go

I'm quite smart enough to "torch" a place without benefit of magic, however. Plenty of pine sap available, scrap cloth, and a few sticks + a flint = ezfirebomb time.

Low or no or high magic, I had time, quiet, and opportunity. And if it'd been low magic, I probably never would have dealt with a necromancer's party being held in my "home" anyway. :)
