Also, given the standard elvish traits, not many people imagine them as heavy - or even, well, muscled. Sorta defeats the purpose of drawing an elf for most people.

It's a bit more than that. It seems people only draw two body types: Huge-buff, or model-skinny. There is barely any inbetween.
There's really not any average body types that people won't call fat, and a genuinely strong body isn't hyper-loaded with rippling muscles so that'll set off the "FATSO-TUB-BOY" alert, too.

They're an exotic, "evil" race which can still be intelligent, pretty, cultured and sophisticated. Probably the only major badguy-race in D&D that isn't either monstrously shaped or dumb brute savages. There's no mystery to it, any more than why people like tieflings so much.

That and anyone who runs drow as a "monster" race is doing it wrong.

They make good recurring antagonists, if anything, but dark elves (as commonly portrayed in settings like Forgotten Realms) should always remain an element of extreme danger mixed with something that resembles mystique, or allure, or otherwise some element of fascination--if not admiration, then respect.

Dealing with drow should be like dealing with mafia bosses.
