    141 KB Gladiatrix Quest 3 gmq !!pyb5WSpixjT 04/25/11(Mon)01:36 No.14712324
You are Gneutered, a gnoll, former arena fighter, former slave, and current gladiatrix manager.

You have a stable of three slaves you manage. The first is a human convict named Septimia who has just won her second fight. Septimia fought alongside Antonina, another convict, in what was Antonina's first time in the arena.

Your third fighter, a lizardfolk woman nicknamed "Slicks" for pronounceability, currently writhes underneath her opponent's sandal as the victorious woman poses and shows off. In the background, the other losers that remain conscious slowly drag themselves away from the action.

The crowd, judging by the noise it is making, is entertained. It's a pity your fighter isn't on the receiving end of the praise.

Eventually the winner is officially announced, and she lets Slicks up shortly after. Slicks is able to make it out of the arena doors that open soon after, mostly under her own power. She is obviously favoring the leg injured early in the fight.

    Gladiatrix manager. Wat do.

    Some updates:
Slicks is in bad shape right now, but you're pretty sure that her injury is treatable, even by your own minimal medical skills.

Thanks to your bet on Slicks to take out two opponents, your money supply has gone from 43 (pre-bet, you bet 5 on her to win and 5 on her to defeat at least two) to 53. You also get 15 SP (5 per fighter entered) from the arena, bringing you up to 68.

Septimia and Antonina seem to be doing fine, physically and mentally. Septimia seems to have, independently of you, taken it on herself to make Antonina's transition to her new life as an arena fighter go as smoothly as possible.

Some sort of medical staff, I think. Faster recovery = more fights = better everything.

You visit the local doctor, pay 2SP, and get Slicks cleaned, stitched, and bandaged up. She's to replace bandages regularly, and avoid straining it for a week, at which point you can remove the stitches. Light exercise is fine, getting knocked around isn't.

Any additional things you feel like investigating? If not, you're still responsible for the girls' training schedule and your monthly meeting with Marianus, the arena manager, to try to book favorable fights.

I specifically asked b& to not give her tits. I also specifically asked SirBriggs to make Antonina "more buxom [than Septimia]" so that is my fault, but she is supposed to just generally be bigger (ie: she is taller and heavier too). Sometimes there are tits.

Anyway, meta break over. Do you people have any clever ideas on alternate sources of income? Things you want to investigate? Stuff you're curious about? If not, let's move on to training, a meeting with Marianus after a couple of weeks, and presumably some fights a couple of weeks after that.

then let's have Slicks heal while still training her stamina.
In the meantime, have Septi and Antoni spar against each other using padded sticks/wooden swords or something. Maybe 'rent' them for bodyguard/escort service for a little buck on the side.
But first I want to ask /tg/'s opinion on bodyguardwhoring: yay or nay?
    >> gmq !!pyb5WSpixjT 04/25/11(Mon)03:10 No.14713154
You have Septimia and Antonina spar with the padded clubs. Slicks sits out, but you make her watch and report her explanations.

Slicks is clever as fuck. You may have misjudged her at first glance; she seems to have limited skills in speaking and understanding Imperial, but the truth is that she only has trouble making human noises. She picks up on what is going on immediately, and simply prefers to not spend ten minutes trying her best to squeeze out a sentence when a nod will do.

Once Slicks gets her stitches out, you put her back on sparring duty, occasionally having her or one of the girls sit out to analyze the fight she just saw. It works pretty well. You can tell the girls are moving from being competent attackers and defenders to having their own adaptable styles and counters.

You aren't sure about renting out your slaves as guards (1 vote in favor of considering it, no votes for it), but you keep it in mind.

The second week goes by quickly. You head over to Marianus' office at the start of the third week for your monthly meeting.

Marianus is a bit surprised when you walk in, but he seems happy to see you.

"Got some great news for you! It looks like after your last fights, I can bump you up a bit further. You'll have your girl's name on the sign and everything. And fifty silver as pay. An easy fight, too... a pushover opponent.

Oh, and it's a deathmatch. But, like I said, a pushover. So, sign here?"

A few minutes of asking around leads you to one desperate coach putting up an unconvincing positive facade.

He's a recently purchased slave, and while he isn't physically impressive, his graceful movements and scars convince you that he must be worth something.

You give him a pep talk and impress on him the importance of yelling. New fighters often panic, and constant reassurance and reminders of what they're to do are legitimately helpful. He is grateful for the attention, and seems to believe you, but his mood doesn't improve.

You make a stop at the bookie before your fight begins to put 5 SP on the underdog and 10 SP on your own girls.

The dire jackal is shaped like a tall, lithe dog with a thick neck that makes its head and torso blend together. Its nose comes to a point, and its mouth stretches back impossibly far. It stands at shoulder height to a human.

It is coated in weak spots and has a short attention span.

Still, it is dangerous. It enters through one portcullis, stalks around the arena, then sits down and scratches itself before your girls are allowed to enter from the opposite end.

The jackal can pounce seven in the time it takes an eyelid to shut.

Slicks does a very good job of parrying, considering she's being trampled by an animal far outside her weight class. She quickly switches to a grapple that renders the beast's jaws a bit less effective.

Then the humans charge in. Septimia knocks the thing off balance a bit, and Antonina at least provides a bit of overstimulation for it.

"YOU HAVE IT RIGHT WHERE YOU WANT IT more or less. WE'VE GONE OVER WEAK SPOTS! NOTHING SURVIVES A JOINT SHOT! IF YOU HIT THE NOSE, IT WILL PANIC!"

Antonina and Septimia flank the jackal, switching to close range, brawling techniques with the spears, hitting one of its forelegs and hind legs from opposite sides before ramming the beast to keep it from having a clear shot at Slicks.

Slicks, still unable to really do any stabbing, has given up on using her spear and manages to nail the jackal's face with her claws. It yelps and backs up. It is hurt, badly. It has a shorter range than your team, and has lost the speed and bravery that allowed it to counteract this.

The new holes its torso quickly acquires do not help.

Antonina, unwilling to get her ass near the jackal's teeth even if it is dead, but under standing orders to go for the sexy post-match humiliation, pretends to fuck the jackal with a comically oversized imaginary cock.

You're not sure if this is normal, but it gets widespread laughs from the crowd. It must be normal.

Note to self, retract that order for matches against animals...

Anyways, onto the scrub coach and the sacrifice of the rat. We need to Help Coach a sub par fighter against someone of our girls' skill. And find out information of the Noble Rat.

Next up is the deathmatch. It's the first fight that actually gets advertised, despite the two unknown fighters. You vaguely recognize the underdog's opponent; though competent, she's rather less experienced than your fighters.

The underdog is still, of course, exactly that. She looks very unsteady.

Both fighters enter the arena after they are properly announced. The underdog's coach makes a solid attempt to reassure her and remind her which end of the sword goes forward.

This looks bad, but it can't hurt to try.

Can we find out the name of the Noble Rat, the Coach and the Scrub?

Scrub is Volcatia. Coach is Cato. Noble rat is a mystery, currently, you haven't caught his name.

Am I the only one who is say that we should help her? It matters not, but I like this.

Get ready to give her a step by step guide in not getting killed. Calling out for her to Dodge and Tackle right after her opponent swings.

"YOU KNOW HOW SHE HAS TO BE AT ARMS LENGTH FOR YOU TO STAB HER? IT WORKS BOTH WAYS! GET CLOSE GET CLOSE GET CLOSE GET CLOSE."

Volcatia looks like she's seconds from breaking and running uselessly for the edge of the arena.

At the last second before her opponent strikes, she gets close.

She doesn't make anything resembling a good attack, but she closes and ties up her opponent. The situation, for one brief instant, is a tie.

It's hard to tell, especially at the distance, but Volcatia looks a bit old to be bought as an arena slave. Maybe she's in her 30s? It stands out to you as a strange thing.

Cato is staying calm and being reassuring, but his words are becoming closer together as time passes.

Things will probably get worse as soon as Volcatia's opponent recovers from the surprise.

Once she is stunned go for the arm holding the sword, she will expect a kill shot and try to dodge, but not try and move her arm holding the weapon.

Is it considered bad form to shout orders or encouragement to the gladiators?
We want the scrub the Noble hired to survive, so we can ask him a bit later about all these deathmatches.

New question: What would it cost to hire a slave trained in Spear and Shield? It might be handy for more beats fights like this.

We are going to train them in Spears, we have the skills. But also in how to use swords and Tridents & Nets. Fun fact, you can use a net to entrap the weapon of your opponent, like using a cape as an offhand weapon in fencing.

Which of these two combattants is heaviest?
I'd advise trying to trip or tackle - even if your opponent is armed, when they're on the ground, they can't hit you very well, and can't defend themselves worth shit.

    >Is it considered bad form to shout orders or encouragement to the gladiators?
This is completely standard and also a central part of your strategy.

    >What would it cost to hire a slave trained in Spear and Shield?
50-100 SP, or you could start training one or all of your fighters in that style.

"FUCK THE SWORD FOR RIGHT NOW. KEEP HERS CONTROLLED, DON'T GET STABBED. YOU KNOW HOW TO WRESTLE ALREADY. YES YOU DO. DON'T GET STABBED. BEAT HER UNARMED FIRST."

You groan uncontrollably at what happens next. Volcatia's opponent pushes her off and gets ready to attack again. Volcatia isn't discouraged, and once again they lock up.

You cringe. It's going to come down to grappling skill with a heavy dose of luck. Volcatia is at a disadvantage. She misses obvious chances to gain superior holds, stays off balance, and doesn't pursue her opponent's weaknesses. At least she's too close to stab at.

    Then they both fall over.

Volcatia is on top. It's pure luck.

She lands a shield bash. It's more of the same.

She lands another one. It isn't.

Volcatia takes a breather. Everyone screams. When she has caught her breath, she makes an absolutely worthless slash with her sword, catching her opponent on the torso and doing superficial damage. She follows it up with a thrust to the neck. It's a mess.

Volcatia stumbles out of the arena, alive.

Tell the coach that that was luck and she is to old to be fighting. Go collect our winnings and be on the look out for the Rat.
    >> gmq !!pyb5WSpixjT 04/25/11(Mon)06:07 No.14714364
Cato thanks you unstoppably until his master makes an abrupt exit with him and Volcatia in tow. Your comments on Volcatia's peak abilities go largely ignored -- he agrees with you utterly, but is stuck. Slaves don't make the rules.

You get a quick look at the owner. He's a rich hobbyist. You're fairly certain he was born into the position. He's used to being taken seriously.

Your fighters are all fine. You make 18 SP on your fighters from the bet, 15 from the base pay, and a whopping 40 SP for the underdog bet victory that you had a hand in, giving you a total of 64 (counting the retconned spear price). Aside from the overall weirdness of the event, this was a very good day for you.

On your way out of the arena, a messenger approaches you and gives you an envelope.

You are invited to a party. The number of squiggles involved in the invitation imply importance.

    End of part 2.

Talk to Volcatia about who she is, what her history is, why she fights (if not covered in history), and who is employing her.
Also talk to the coach for similar questions.
We could stand to learn more about this mystery deathmatch setter.

Also, how is the emotional health of our slaves? Talk to them, see if they're at least content enough not to run off. Ask them if there's anything they'd really like or if there's anything missing.

What would it cost to talk to someone - like an apothecary or a private cook - about proper diet for a warrior? Presumably our slaves will be alive for a while, and we want them well-nourished if at all possible.

As for earning money on the side: I don't see how. Short of illegal activities, there isn't much a person trained only for combat can do to earn money, and illegal activities are not a good idea.
