“The Parrot”, often misnamed “Langford's Basilisk”, is an infamous picture among the marines of the Abyssal Jaws and the Inquisitors who periodically visit the planet. The image was discovered by Inquisitor Mordecai on the abandoned planet of New Cambridge, located in close proximity to Maresia.
Inside of a ruined house, a barely functioning computer was found and the retinue tech-priest was called up to win the cooperation of its machine spirit.. After sufficient prayers and the numerous applications of sacred ointments, the tech-priest was able to convince the computer to turn on. However, minutes later the Tech-Priest found the The Parrot. The text below the image was unreadable, but something about the picture worried Mordecai, so the image was moved to a data storage pad and taken along with the retinue.
When the Inquisitor found himself back on-board an Imperium ship, he was able to find a translator who specialised in Old Terran. For the next hour or so, the translator translated the text, taking notes and referring to ancient tomes. However, as soon as he'd finished and read through the text, he flung himself to the floor in horror. Trying to work out what was wrong, the Inquisitor read the text and, noting how the image apparently later “crashed” the brains of those who gazed upon, judged the image to be heretical.
The Parrot is now located in a vault, locked within the darkest depths of an unclosed world, far from the eyes of mortal men. It is still studied by members of the Inquistion, who try to harness its powers in an attempt to destroy their enemies. One of the Inquistiors who do not study the image is Mordecai, who unable to live with the possibility of dying from a Gödelian Shock Input, chose to take his own life. Thus far, it is believed countless people have been killed as a result of observing the picture, but none of these deaths have ever been recorded. |
