    184 KB Sword World? Anonymous 04/16/11(Sat)00:10 No.14608679
Sup /tg/? Just got my hands on these bad boys from a friend who lives in Japan, saying that he thinks I would be interested in one of their big tabletop games. And, after doing some searching on the internet, I found enough to say that it would look interesting to play or run.

Thing is, each of these books is about 300+ pages of straight Japanese, and I don't understand a lick of moonspeak. I have heard of various programs, such as ReadIris and KanjiOCR, that are able to detect and crudely translate scanned Japanese, and may well take the time to acquire such programs if the demand is there.

To be honest, I'm actually trying to gauge the interest in a project like this, as it would mean tracking down a scanner able to hit 600+ dpi cleanly, as well as the time to do 1,000+ pages of straight moonspeak. I know it stinks of strong weeaboo, but it'd be different from the rampant butthurt over the new 40k faggotry-of-the-moment, so let me know if I should waste my time or not.

You're doing something I've been wanting someone to take the time to do since I've found out about this game.

All I can say is, I'd love you FOREVER if you did something like this.

BTW, if it wasn't clear, I have all three books in the picture in hand, and would scan the lot of them (however long that may take). There would definitely be PDF versions of the books made, though they may or may not be in Japanese, depending upon how easily I can come across the right software on the cheap.

Personally I'd say you should look around on RPG.net or possibly various anime subbing groups who like tabletop games. Get a real team together to translate the books.

Y'know, I lurk on there quite a bit. And while I love Neko Ewen and Andy K, they have both professed a want to bring SW over to the States and other countries after doing some of their pet projects first. Not only that, they seem to be the only ones doing anything with j-rpgs over there. Hell, I've even offered up my own copies of the game if only they would do something with it, and no dice. I do like the idea of an anime sub group, though, and may get something together once I have results. Maybe even contact one of the popular doujin translators, even...

I will mention this again, just to make sure we're all crystal clear on the subject. I cannot understand a single goddamn character of Japanese. Any "translations" would be machine-based at best, and to be honest, I'm not sure if I can get the use of a scanner able to get the 600+ dpi I've heard is needed for accurate OCR translations. Hell, I'm estimating the sheer amount of time and space it would take to scan in the books to be fucking huge, and I can only hope I end up with something usable at the end of this.

However, it does seem there is a bit of demand for something more than the nothing we have, and I'll try to do my damnedest to bring something to /tg/, however long it may take.

I'm a fucking wee/a/boo fuck, and I would love to try the shit out of this, or at least look at all the pretty animu arts (I love that pseudo-oil portrait coloring thingy).

By the time you scan it, I'd probably have two years of Japanese under my belt (I'm nearing the end of my first year of it). That's certainly not enough to be of good help, but I'd at least be a start for the piss-simple stuff if we could get scans.

Well... Japanese RPG like Sword world is generally known for "You liek roleplaying? I made my rule easier to RP since MY RULE SUXXS!! So you don't rule lawyering since you have to RP and have fun!"

Their rule system really that sucks. WoD is made by genius if comparing to Sword World 2.
Your best bet is using kawaii pictures and concepts of races (lots of loli furries etc) and convert it to FATE or GURPS rule.

The oddest thing about Japanese games is they tend to have more structure to the roleplaying

but also more free form, it's... it's hard to describe. Like... instead of "I do X and Y to get to Z" it's "The result is Z, X and Y is how I reached that point"

So...you're assumed to have already made it to the endpoint...and you just describe how you and your party-friends got to that?

As opposed to RPing to attempt to get to the endpoint?

    >>14609315
Its still the same core mechanic of "2d6+stat vs TN" or "2d6 check table". But from what little moon speak I do know and the previews I've seen the ability progression and classes are a bit more final fantasy-ey.
    >> Anonymous 04/16/11(Sat)01:53 No.14609443
    >>14609386So...you're assumed to have already made it to the endpoint...and you just describe how you and your party-friends got to that?

for example in Shinobigami, a game about ninjas...

the gameplay event is you are in an encounter with another character. You try to win the scene using one of your skills. If you win the scene you then get to choose a benefit (learn info, heal, attack the other character, find out the secret behind their finishing move, form an emotional bond etc.).
*emotional bonds have a mechanical effect in the game.

So let's say in this scene you use your barrier abilities, but it fails and the other player breaks it. He then goes for emotional bond "fear".

What you then roleplay is a battle where you try to capture that guy, you use your perfect trapping jutsu, but the guy breaks through and you have no freakin' idea how he did that. Seeing your best move beaten so casually, you are now intimidated by that other player (giving him certain bonuses against you later on).

That's the sort of 'different' order of resolving things that I was describing.
    >> Anonymous 04/16/11(Sat)01:54 No.14609445
    >>14609386
Varies by game. But RPing in "retrospect" is not uncommon, especially in games like Night Wizard and MYTHIUS. Though MYTHIUS is the only game I've seen where that is the main assumption.
    >> Anonymous 04/16/11(Sat)01:56 No.14609467
Some games also have a manga sort of pacing to it.

For example in a game about hunting beasts, the order of play goes something like....

Char intro- describe everyone's relationship with the beast to be hunted

    Char meet up

first night- beast's actions, such as eating people, you try to stop him.

2nd day- what you do in the day, information gathering, training, research, shopping, etc.

    2nd night, etc.

and a final showdown at the end, followed by a resolution.

Many of these JPRG's are geared as one-shots as playing at conventions is more common than playing a continuous campaign with one group.

OP, don't worry so much about the translation yet.

When you have it scanned, you can take the time (or other fa/tg/uys can) to find a way to do it. Once it's in PDF, you have all the time in the world.

So focus on the scanning first, and good luck!

Yeah, that sort of system can work pretty well - a version is that you resolve who wins, and the one who wins describes what happens. It's fun in a way because you don't need to get the whole "I try to grapple" -*roll* "I fail my grapple" bit. But on the other hand there are other bits lost, and its awesomeness depends on the group you've got at the table.

    Kind of like stunts.

I'm actually fascinated by the idea of Japanese replays. There's a Night Wizard replay on FEAR's site, as well as several others...I'd love to know how *their* gaming sessions go.

After reading about this, I gotta say it looks far more interesting than Sword World.

Basically what happens is suddenly a generic fantasy land has absolutely everything turned into a dungeon, and you're tasked with clearing them out and claiming them for your kingdom.

Also, I was sent this by my friend, and he was saying it was actually pretty expensive to ship them overseas. Like, I could probably get something else, like Meikyuu Kingdom or Alshard or something, but I would have to pony up quite a bit more expendable income than I have at the moment.

Also, holy shit I leave for the day, go to a friend's sister's wedding and come back to find a topic on mine still on /tg/... pic related. I'm amazed, both at the sheer number of people who want something to start with and how many who would be willing to have a crack at translating. Fucking /tg/ gets shit done (even if it hasn't happened yet).

Also, I did talk to my brother and his fiancee, and I may be able to nab their copier/scanner. If I can use it, I'll be starting scans on Monday.

Sword World 2.0 is sort of like... role-playing lite here in Japan. From all the gamers I've talked to, most of them sort of avoid it because it's so simplistic. Of course, it's one of the most popular systems, probably because of new gamers and young players. Not to say that it's bad, but it doesn't excite me nearly as much as Tokyo Nova or Shinobigami. The awesome thing about it, though, is that each of those 3 books you see cost like $10. And you only need the first to play. When you want to level up past level 5 or 6, you buy the next one, and so on. There's lots of support for it, too, since it's a money maker. I don't think they've put out a Lodoss book for this particular edition yet.

If people want to see games like this come out in the US, they would do well to support projects like Maid and Tenra Bansho when that finally comes out. There are some really exciting aspects of these games that can revitalize the way people play even DnD as long as you look at it with an open mind. But /tg/ hates anything to do with handouts or Japan so there's not much point in discussing them here, I guess.

Being a Swede, probably the same way some of our native RPGs might give new ideas on an international level.

That is to say, they might not turn into big sellers, but perspectives vary sometimes and with any active, partly insular market you get different perspectives and ideas gaining room. Sweden, for example, are generally big on BRP variants - sadly not that interesting, I know. On the other hand, there are some interesting roleplaying games that have been released (latest edition of Mutant, which is sort of like Gamma World plus Wind in the Willows plus industrial revolution, or (possibly) Null State which'll be released next week and is a pick up and play Global Frequency-inspired game).

From this thread, I kind of think the whole "10 bucks a volume, first needed for play, next expands with 'more levels'" idea is great, from an economic, and other, standpoints - as an RPG publisher you can spend less time making an entire RPG, you get cash in hand or know when to drop a game earlier and you can fine-tune your next book from the feedback you got with the old.

Me personally, I've tossed a bit in donations to the guys doing Maid and Tenra back when I had a job and thus, money to spend. However, like I said back in >>14608981, I appreciate what they do, but I wish there were more people trying to bring foreign RPGs over here. As the Ranting Swede >>14622893 points out, nerds in different countries think of different things when someone says gaming.

Another thing, too, is that you're not the first even in this topic to say the gaming is rather simplistic. That's actually why I think my friend sent me these specifically, as he was the same one to get me into gaming itself back in 1994-95 with the games in the pic. Sure, he only had the red box, but my own looking into the system (and my mother and grandmother helping me out looking at garage sales) led me to discover D&D and gaming as a wee lad of 10. And while I've played in games since over various systems and with different groups, I have a place in my heart for simple games with a lot of hidden depth.

I am too lazy to read all 170 posts in this thread, but I just want to throw this out there: I am a J-E translator, and I have wanted to get my hands on Sword World ever since the new edition came out.

Please keep scanning! I don't know about the rest of the TLs in this thread who expressed interest, but I know that I don't need OCR to translate, I work with average quality jpg scans all the time for Light Novels; as long as it's clear enough for my EYES to read, my brain is its own OCR software.

Do any of the other moonspeaking ca/tg/irls in this thread want to actually make this a project? Lots of us seem interested, but it seems like it would be a waste to have five different people all translating the same thing when we could divide up the work among ourselves.

I'm not particularly experienced in the organizational side of projects like this (setting up a website/central communicaton/filedump/whatever area), but I really think this would be a great /tg/ project.

Also, my pic shows there is a slight blurring problem with some of the characters near the middle of the pages that I'm scanning now, but AFAIK, it's just characters off of the character sheet. >>14614184 has one that, while it says it's in english, is really in japanese, so if you really need to see what they're saying, I'd recommend that.

Again, thank you for this OP, like I mentioned earlier, I've been interested in Sword World for a while, but never had scans, and everytime I'm ready to put in a large order from amazon japan I end up spending my money on more important things, like liquor or new pants.

Hee-ho? I'm not too familiar with SMT, and I don't think my friend is, either. And as I said, the fees to send shit overseas is kinda ridiculous for both me and my buddy, as I'm unemployed and I believe he's in a low-paying job. TBH, I'm surprised he managed to send me these books with the way he's complaining about having no money.

    >>14629187
    >ask you to de-spine the book
Good lord, I certainly hope not. Each of the books say they're 900 yen each, which works out to about $45 for the three of them. While it's not WotC's exorbitant prices for manuals, as I said before, I'm unemployed and barely get enough for food and electric from unemployment insurance. $45 is a lot to me, and that's before taxes, customs, and exchange rates.

Also, up to pgs. 62-63 in an hour, out of 384. Given that rate, I should be done with the first book at 4:00 this morning. That would also estimate another 6 for Book 2, and around 5 for Book 3. If I don't do that "sleep" thing, I should be done by 3:00 Monday afternoon. Theoretically, of course.

The big problem with using 1d4chan, at least as far as I can see, is that translating this is a violation of copyright, and would be in violation of 1d4chan's site rules (as loosely defined as they are).

Your internet digging doesn't know the while story.

First there was D&D (Holmes Basic, to be exact) released in Japan. And it was popular, but hard to play (as Math Dice were very rare and expensive over there). So a bunch of people adapted D&D HB to be playable with d6's.

The ran what became the FIRST Lodoss Wards replay, printed in Dragon Monthly. Which was printed alongside the adaptive rules for playing D&D with d6's.

This became a popular way of generating short stories to be printed in Dragon Monthly. Lorainne Williams, (at the time) head of the fiction side of TSR got butthurt and C&D'd Dragon Monthly demanding that no new D&D-based fiction be printed without first generating a royalty generating licensing agreement.

Dragon Monthly was STFU, we'll make out own game. And they did. Which was Sword World. Which handled the gameplay a little differently, a more Japanese way inspired by Japanese RPGs.

Thanks! I had known the first part of that story, but never knew about TSR getting asspained over the whole thing.

I've got the first 2 Lodoss War books sitting on my shelf... I feel like I should read them, but I'll probably just get upset when I finish number 2 and realize I don't have number 3.

IIRC, Group SNE came to WotC within the past decade, hoping to get Sword World published over here, if not as a stand-alone system, then as a setting for the D&Ds. As could be figured, WotC turned them down in a boneheaded move.

Also, chilling in the IRC channel. Get like me.

The idea is to use the wiki as more of a homepage for any translation progress, so that way we can not only have people not stepping on each other's toes, but also be able to proofread shit as well.

Didn't realize this thread was still active. I've started translating the Dwarf page a bit, though I'm confused what ザイア (zaia) refers to. I'm under the impression it's either a god or the name of the earth, though I could be dead wrong.

Yeah, it's the name of a deity. The dwarf paladin is a sample character for people that don't want to go through the full creation process, and that's part of the "background fluff/overview" blurb.

So the first sentence should be "this dwarf" rather than "dwarfs" since it's in reference to a specific individual.

Yeah, that. Well, as I said, I was using my brother's scanner, and he happens to have a very friendly black lab. As his scanner was on the floor, it was close enough to be one of the casualties when she decided that she really wanted to get her butt scratched.

Sorry about that, but the screen attracted hair like a magnet. As I was already frustrated at having to rescan a number of pages due to illegibility, technical glitches and just general quality control, a bit of hair here and there was acceptable.

    http://archive.easymodo.net/tg/thread/S13616393

But yes, for all that /tg/ is worth, yes!
And people should also not think much of whether or not it is supposedly "weeaboo", because this is basically "D&D", though branched in a different direction.

The origin of these games have still been western RPGs. One could say that TRPGs in a Japan is a relatively "reverse-weeaboo" hobby.
But then again, as mentioned, one shouldn't think of whether or not its weeaboo or not.

Its a great game, with a great setting, and most importantly, we could use this knowledge to expand our games, if anything because its different.
But they really are great in their own sense as well.

Also, no one wouldn't happen to have all those images on the in game races?
