I'm especially fond of FIGHT!: The Fighting Game RPG.
The "metagame" concept is majorly wonky and the dude knows NOTHING about formatting, but it's excellent for martial arts/beat-'em-up/fighting game style games.

It's easy to make things in, easy to play in, and it's fantastic to play a facepuncher that isn't gimp. Too bad that the only method of combat is 1v1.

CthulhuTech. I love the game and the setting, but /tg/ seems to hate it. It's got a quirky setting that people either love or hate and a system that's very chance based. I love it, it feels like you're gambling for the lives of your characters, which is in a sense what you're doing.

You know how World of Darkness is for the most people synonym to the Vampire: the Masquerade? It's not a huge problem, but in /tg/s case we have only talks about old World of Darkness (Maquerade + sometimes Ascension) and nWoD: Hunter, Vampire, Mage and Changeling (suprisingly often we discuss Changeling).
What's dreadful to me it's the fact that not one person wants to talk about Werewolf: the Forsaken. No one seems to play it. Promethean gets more discussion then W:tF . Seriously, it's disapointing.

God damn it, I love Fight!

Been trying to modify it for more of a Beat 'em Up feel, so that I can essentially re-create God Hand in roleplaying format. Haven't made much progress due to lack of time/interest from my regular playtesting group, but I hope to have something someday. Really, an option for multiple characters at the same time would be absolutely wonderful.

Honestly, it could be fun to work on rebuilding the game so it's a little less . . . well, poorly-formatted and dense. It's a fun system, does what it does well, but it can really turn players off with the weird complexity in parts.

W:tF isn't really that interesting, bro. I give it credit for being way better than its oWoD predecessor but that's not saying much. It doesn't have the newbie simplistic appeal of Vampire and lacks the balls out creativity of the non-big 3 gamelines. It's the chocolate section of Neopolitan ice cream; not as inviting as vanilla and not as awesome as strawberry.

Because it's a D20 system, which makes it pretty suspect to begin with. The fact that it has no grounding in a particular setting makes it haphazard mess to run. It's FAR from being the best system to run a modern action game in.

Seconding this. Fuck awesome system. Well written rules. KEYS TO THE MOTHERFUCKING UNIVERSE.

The fact that /tg/ers will go out of their way to decry how shitty it is, spouting off utter nonsense about it being a load of algebra [which it's not, honestly, there's more math involved in DnD], when they've not even read the fucking rules, really gets to me. The icing on the cake, with this, is that [typically] the alternative they'll suggest is d20 modern. FACEPALM AHOY!

I don't get the hate, I really don't. It's a really great system, that let's you do anything. The rules and playstyle are just as cutomisable as characters are, and yet, few people will actually bother reading it, and would rather waste their effort "re-doing/re-jigging/re-fucking" d20 based games (and no, d20 is NOT a SYSTEM; a system can be used in ALL situations with little modification, if any. d20 changes massively from game to game). Can you not handle rolling more than one dice?

    Shits me to absolute tears.

I'm also quite fond of the WEG Star Wars game, though I've never gotten a chance to play it. It actually stays true to the spirit of the Movie Trilogy. Yes, there's only one. And it finished in 1983.

Sorry for the rant, chaps. Carry on.

I think GURPS catches hate for two reasons: 1.) Sure, you can create a totally unique universe of you own design, but you're going to end up putting in a LOT more work than if you're playing in an established universe with another system, and lots of people just aren't willing to commit that kind of time. 2.) The system can be pretty intimidating at first look to new players, and that probably turns off players and GMs alike before they get a chance to actually learn it. Sure d20 Modern is shit-covered shit with shit filling, but d20 as a whole is a system that most other people already know, having been around in one form or another since the mid-70s. Even when the rules vary wildly from setting to setting, cultural memory fools them into thinking it's actually easier/better.
    >> Anonymous 04/13/11(Wed)00:30 No.14575138
I like quirky, one-off games that require a bit of adventurous investment from willing groups. Like Og: The Roleplaying Game of Caveman Miscommunication.

The short of it: you're a caveman and you're trying, along with your cavebuddies, to survive the hazards of the world B.C. (and not that shitty newspaper strip where it's B.C. but somehow Jesus already existed and died).

The catch is that you're not very smart. Caveman society, as a whole, knows only 18 words: You, Me, Rock, Water, Fire, Stick, Hairy, Bang, Sleep, Smelly, Small, Big, Cave, Food, Thing, Shiny, Go, Verisimilitude.

While the GM may describe things and you can describe actions, you can only communicate with your co-players In Character with these words and, being the caveman that you are, you only know maybe five or six. What's the difference between Hairy Thing (dog) and Hairy Thing (sabre-toothed cat)?

Depends on how good you are at mime, mimicry, and cave drawing. And, as the book says, "When in doubt, say your few words louder. That always helps."

1.) I'll concede this. But, it should be noted the SJ Games has a LOT of very cool worldbooks, such as Reign of Steel and AutoDuel [my two faves]. Sadly, they're mostly only available as pdf's now.

2.) D20 isn't a system though. If it were a system, a d20 modern character, a Spycraft Character, and a DnD 3.5 character, all of equal level, would be compatible in a campaign. Which they are not.

And d20's only been around since what? 1999? 2000? the first two editions of DnD were not d20; comparing them to DnD 3.x or 4e is apples and oranges, chalk and cheese.

I'll agree with what you're saying about people believing it's easier, simply because it's been around longer, but that's the kicker; every time you start playing a new d20 based game, you have to re-learn parts (often quite large parts too) of the rules. I played in a group that started off with 3.x, later switched to Spycraft, and then some other one that I don't remember. And I was...mystified as to why I was spending more time reading "rules alterations/changes", than getting into CharGen and play.

d20 is the VHS (as opposed to betamax) of RPGs; WAY shittier quality, but more popular simply because of prevalence. For a community whose inherent nature is one of higher intelligence ('cause let's face it, Football Jocks generally aren't RPers), it's disappointing to see the majority settle for something that's (at most) 2nd best, quality wise.

It has to be the Low Life version of Savage Worlds, where you can do anything from bottle magic smells for later to animate garbage golems to stabbing yourself with weapons to store for later use. Also every weapon is unique. In the setting, since most things are scavenged, there is no standard longsword or bow, though you can totally make a quarterstaff made from a sign mounted with a slingshot that is mechanically different from a double ended battle axe made made of sharpened dinnerplates that you can detach.

Though I'll never get to run a game of this again unless I decide to make a quest or something.

    Fantasy Craft!

    PROS:

It's like 3e, but not. It's also definitely not Pathfinder.

Extreme character option depth makes for very versatile characters, everything is just sort of turned up to 11. Very crunchy, but that doesn't bother me much.

Focus on teamwork and some pretty robust non-combat classes that you will actually want to play.

Spell-point rather than spells-per-day system. (though there are some "once per encounter" "once per adventure" abilities).

The gear system makes me cream. So many little tags make a battleaxe noticeably different from a longsword etc. etc. Gear choice feels meaningful and powerful.

    CONS:

The book's layout is near incomprehensible, takes a lot of flipping around to 'get it' to begin with.

Character creation takes longer, has way more steps.

If you want to be a magic user you basically have to pick Mage as one of your classes. That or Priest with the Magic alignment.

    ------------------------

In the end it will be VERY familiar and VERY strange to anyone who's played 3E, but in my experience it's fucking amazing.

Drakar och Demoner, särskilt 1991 års upplaga.

    Cons:
*It's not played outside of Sweden.

Earthdawn is a favourite of mine.

It was my first roleplaying game (even though we played it horribly "wrong" at the time) and even though some of the mechanics are really clunky (initiative, initiative everywhere), the rules and core concepts are really great.

Basically, it is a mixture between high fantasy, fallout and lovecraft, with a middle-american vibe. The adepts, magic-users specializing in certain fields, explore abandoned/ruined "vaults" (kaers) in search of stories, names and magical treasure.

And oftentimes names can become just as important as the treasure.

I haven't seen anyone mention it yet, but I'm quite a fan of Puppetland/Powerkill.
It's a 30-page pdf of a diceless system, where the PCs are all puppets, and everything said during the game is said by your character, no matter what it is. It's basically a horror game inspired by 1700s children's fiction.
And Powerkill is a small meta-supplement included in the back of the rulebook that's meant to be played in 5-10 minute increments at the beginning of sessions of other games.

The thing I liked the most about it? It's magic system. It had spells lists and many D&D staples like Fireball and the like. But you didn't just hit a certain level and start tossing fireballs around, you had to learn all the other basics of fire magic first, Ignite Fire, Create Fire, Shape Fire before you could learn Fireball.

To me it just made more sense

Ahaha, I remember this! The "real" roleplaying session was a hallucination you acted out on, robbing and murdering, and are now put in an asylum. The GM is the shrink holding sessions with the players and they explain the reasons behind their actions and what they thought at the time.

Also on the same meta-subject: InSpectres, tongue-in-cheek paranormal investigation RPG (in the league of Orpheus, Dark Conspiracy, Delta Green et al) with a light rule-set. Thing is players can, and are encouraged, to time out the action to act out a post-event "confession room interview" (Big Brother and similar shows) of how they felt/thought and about what at the time, i.e. the current ongoings in the game.

    EARTHDAWN UP IN THIS.

Amazing game (FASA master race reporting in). The setting is superbly intertwined with the mechanics and has solid, amazing explanations for so many of the standard tropes of fantasy RPGs in the 80s and beyond it's just stunning.

The rules were a decade ahead of their time. If you look at the underlying scaling mechanics and balancing points you wonder if the 4e designers took some inspiration.

The dice mechanic (pool of 2-3 dice that scale in die size) is often criticized as being clunky, but I never understood that- to me it's elegant and interesting. Plus, you actually USE all of your various dice!

Savage Worlds - faster and simpler than GURPS, but no less flexible, setting genre elements separated (good and bad things depending on need)

I really like Story and WRM

Story is a really nice and tight dicepool system which can be used for pretty much everything but as opposed to White Wolf systems, skills actually matter and you cant fly through all skills known to man with a single high stat.

WRM, or Warrior, Rogue, Mage is a very light system with only 3 stats, each representing everything encompassing that particular steriotype. Attacking, parrying, hit points, lifting etc is determined by rolling Warrior for instance.

Well, with what I've seen, it's easier to pick a better system.

Lets break down the four you just said.

    >GURPS
A decent system(gods know there are worse out there) for any and everything any player or GM could think of. The absolute BEST for time travel RPGs. Has it's faults, with a shallow dice pool. Jack of all trades, master of none.

    >D&D

High/Low Fantasy. Depending on the version, highly swayed between fighters or casters. Familiar and iconic. PLENTY of content.

    >HERO

Only slightly read it, never played it, so I won't pass judgement

    >Homebrew

Now, this is a tricky one. It all depends on the quality of the homebrew, the setting, and the players. Can be the best expired ever, or FATAL.

    SO MANY GAMES.

GURPS (Yes, yes, I know. I like it because you can do anything with it. ANYTHING. If it's not an official product, it's a fan-splat, and it's all balanced. Character creation can go fuck itself though.)

    FantasyCraft
    SpyCraft
WoD (outside the 'general' thread we have every two to three weeks and the random storytime thread, I haven't seen hardly anything)
    Shadowrun (everyone loves this game.)
    Paranoia.
    DRYH.
    Deadlands (any of them)
    True20
    Exalted
    Anything featuring Cthulhu
    MAID (Shut up.)
OG (Caveman RPG is better than it sounds)
Dread (10 points to anyone who knows what that even is)
    Amber diceless....

Fuck, I could go on for hours. Sometimes I feel like every RPG that printed a single copy ends up in my possession.

I will add a link to SLA Industries - The Truth

Serious spoiler warning about this one though. It adds a lot of knowlege about what is actually happening in the SLA universe but it is all fairly useless or dangerous to know for actual play and some people believe it ruined the feel of the game by revealing what it did but I personally like it.

    Rolemaster Standard System.

It was so daunting at first, with the hundreds of tables, the strange (to my mainly old-WoD and ad&d-trained mindset) mechanisms.

Yet after learning the system, it comes out as streamlined, understandable, so fucking rich, and well my players love it.

What I found especially interesting was that I introduced 5 people to RPG through rolemaster, and they all understood the system and liked it. It could mean more about me being a decent GM than RM being a decent system, I suppose.

    >> Waffle House Millionaire 04/14/11(Thu)04:26 No.14589817
    >>14589733

In this case the problem is the base for the rules.

The content may be good, but basing it on a variant of the d20 system is fundamentally flawed for various reasons I don't want to detail here (mainly because of post spam).

Let's just say that I wouldn't use d20 for Zelda for the same reason I wouldn't use, say, 2020 to run a dungeon crawl. Or GURPS for a silly light-hearted game. Or Toon for a murder mystery.

Some systems just don't work for certain concepts.

Because it wouldn't fit. I can understand that.

I haven't read it, but I do hope it's just not a complete gloss over replacing the races, and adding something minorly new, is it?

    Haven't actually read it yet.

If it's got anything decent in it I'll take note and steal it for when I finally snap and make my own Zelda Homebrew.

Cubicle 7 have said that they don't follow the old Writers' Bible any more though. Man it was fun crawling through the web looking for the truth in the early days, also happy that my ol' players never did or have (not that it matters now that we don't run the standard SLA setting, but it might still spoil it for players by changing their state of mind about the game, to early, and how the think about material presented to them in-game).
    >> Anonymous 04/14/11(Thu)06:31 No.14590597
Not to derail the thread, but maybe this will get some people's opinions and crop up a few new systems?

I'm working on a futuristic campaign that I'd like to also be fairly gritty. Make good use of cover, that sort of thing. Guns should be dangerous unless you're in serious armor, but the armor should have drawbacks as well.

Any thoughts? I've been thinking of gutting alot of Pathfinder, since that's what we're familiar with, but that doesn't appeal to me as much. Might as well use it as is, to a point.

Cybernetics, some future-tech, but most of it is just more advanced versions of what we use today. The most advanced stuff is probably power suits and the FTL system. Think Mass Effect, though that's not what the game is about or the setting.

No, the system isn't "very chance based". Any proper system is chance based. FATALTech is strictly bad because the system is badly skewered. You're twice as likely to critical fail at a task at skill level 2 than compared to skill level 1. That shit is just retarded, I just got worse at doing things when I was supposed to get better? I'm taking alot of inspiration from Eclipse Phase, but it's a bit too futuristic. Trying to keep it very human, focusing on some of the moral issues of 'how much modification is too much', the corporate world after Earth, and the potential threat of extra-solar threats.

Serenity's system seems pretty decent. Definite change from our usual games, which isn't a bad thing at all
