It's an ideal set for campaign games, but it shines for the one-offs too as it contains a country generator which includes names, flags and what your army calls itself (e.g. The Lord's Resistance Commandos of Ztongia).

Also, you can guarantee that those professionals with mortars you have will end up bailing out their morale after a couple of turns. DAMNIT, GUISE!

I mean, this game would be similar to some company making "Libya: The Revolution" where you get to play some rebel, or gaddafi mercenary.

WW2 is over and done with, and simulating that is ok, but this is blatantly profiting on ongoing conflicts in central and south africa.

Its a wonderfully simple and fast playing system that doesn't lose much/any tactical "crunch" due to its simplicity. I love it. Its very much a game of "Oh shit!" for the professionals.

One minute your squads are making their way to the objective, easily beating off any resistance like some "AMERICA FUCK YEAR!" Michael Bay film, next thing you know a fog-of-war card gets drawn, a DShK in a building suddenly opens up on Baker squad as they cross the market place and guns them all down. Able squad is struggling to reach them to check for survivors as insurgents poor out of the woodwork, and you order your Blackhawk to make an orbital gun run but some rebel gets a lucky RPG hit in and the Helo goes spiraling into the ground in the next neighborhood and things are generally turning to deep shit in seconds.

Pretty much, the game doesn't concern itself with stats, taking the philosophy of "A rifle is a rifle, the person using it is more important" (though it does differentiate powerful support weapons like RPGs, machine guns or rifle-grenade launchers). In fact troops have only two "stats", Quality and Morale. The basic "universal" mechanic is a 4+ on a die roll is a success, the big difference being that better quality troops roll a bigger die (d6 = untrained, d8 = trained, d10 = Veteran, d12 = Elite), meaning better quality troops have MUCH better chances of succeeding at an action.

It also has a listing of vehicles for various military organizations (more so in the motorpool supplement) and the core book lists Orbats for American (Army and USMC), British, and Australian military forces.

Its not a "Competitive" game, there are no points lists or even "Fair" games. Its scenario based with lots of random elements, such as random reinforcements and random event cards. One game could be a cakewalk for the professionals, and the next game, same scenario, could be a nightmare as random events turn against you.

Also, the same rules system used by Ambush Alley is used for another game, Force on Force, which focuses on two professional armies fighting eachother.

A new "Osprey" (the publisher) edition of the Force on Force rules is due out in the next month or two, which will include rules for Ambush Alley (its being "absorbed" into Force on Force).

Only have and play Future War Commander but here is Blitzkreaig Commander 1930's to 1945 and Cold War Commander 1950's to modern era. You command roughly a platoon at a time and move multiple platoons a turn. Not a difficult system to learn and Future War Commander has rules for creating your own units and armies. Well, what specifically are you looking for? There is a decent amount of 15mm producers out there.

Unfortunately finding non-Kalishnakov armed rebel/insurgent types is going to be a bit difficult, because there is a *reason* the AK-47/74 are such an iconic weapon for such forces.

PP does have some militia with bolt-action rifles, but thats about all I noticed on his AK-47 Rep. range, aside from professional Military units like the FFL and IDF who obviously use their own gear.

Why the hell is it that I cannot find a 15mm producer that makes quality materials? I'm considering just dropping it down to 6mm and buying everything from GHQ - keeps everything in dollars, and it'd allow me to have armies that could fit in my pocket.

TL;DR - are there any 15mm producers (regardless of $ for figs) that make good looking minis?

As I said in the last AK-47 thread, in the next few days I'm going to scan the original articles from Wargames Illustrated where Chris Peers drew up the rules.

For now, here's a 6-page article he wrote called "Mission at Mongo" from the April 2005 issue.

    Rar here : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E7VJT32A

I'd buy it myself but I've got about eight rulesets (from flying lead to AA) that do similar things to this system. While this system is unique in its creation/build up to war etc. I could probably do the same sort of thing with Flying Lead and a little bit of work. The rulebook for AK-47 is 20 pounds (where the fuck is the pound key on this thing?), which is a little pricey for me. I could buy fifteen 28mm Afghan Insurgents for that price.

There's creator notes, a campaign guide, an examination of relevant factions, aircraft notes, and a massive scenario (pictured).

The scenario being described/laid out in that article is actually for a DIFFERENT rules system the article author wrote himself after being a long-time AK-47 player.

Also, you can easily play a 15mm wargame in 28mm by simply doubling all the measurements.

tempting.. I would like to add some personality to my characters this seems like a game that would lend it's self to that but its a pain on the 15mm scale. would it be more expensive with 28mm models or does it even out eventually.

It would almost certainly be more expensive in 28mm scale.

Just to compare eight 15mm dudes from Peter Pig cost about £2.50/$4.00. Five 28mm USMC from Black Scorpion Miniatures (pic related) costs £8.50/$13.75.

Of course, price will vary by manufacturer, but I suspect they'll be similar. Though I also admit I went with the first set of 28mm moderns I could find.
