In the barren, blasted wastes of the west sits Mardana-Fel. Built from the stones of empires long dead and whose fall scorched both the land and sea, it is a miracle of life amidst the deserts and ruins of those long dead. A city of trade and prosperity. A city of corruption and guile. Of entwined life and death.

    A city of adventure.

It has been nearly a year since you first set eyes upon the City of the Gods, and six months since you returned to look for suitable heroic pawns to become your Hero. You have not been disappointed. Every day thousands ply their adventurous trade both in the city, the ruins that it sits upon, and the even more ancient ones in the desert itself. Horrific abominations of shadow, blood, and fear stalk such places, and all residents and visitors know that night is a time when one stays inside... for the ancient gods for which the city is named are not yet spent of their wrath. Only death awaits those who leave the safety of their homes after the sun drops below the horizon unless, of course, they are willing to scourge twisted spawn of ancient blood magics in order to simply walk the streets.

The risks, dire though they are, are nonetheless outweighed by the rewards offered. Power beyond the dreams of those wholly mortal, epic artifacts the likes of which are lost to dream or memory, tomes containing the secrets of the diabolists, those who vied with the gods themselves for power... and more. So much more. So it is that this beshadowed city stands -- and thrives -- even on the shores of the Dead Coast. Throngs of those hoping for power or wealth flock in, replenishing the dozens that fall with each passing day. Some residents make blood sacrifice to abate the wrath of the dark and insane gods, while others call upon divinities of their own to shield them. Piety and horror, greed and duty, darkness and light... all stand together in this place lest they be killed apart.

From these teeming masses of potential you have culled five promising possibilities, though if none of them show the abilities you desire you know them to be easily replaced by the daily migration of candidates.

Knight-Guardian Tiss Voldire, Paladin of Loris and in service to the Divine Moltivan Conclave. Constantly in a state of flux, Moltiva is held together only by the unswerving faith of the masses and nobles alike, dedicated to their goddess Loris and led both spiritually and . So when the High Priest of Loris was overwhelmed with a malady most dire every effort was made to restore his health. Yet despite the efforts of all, even the divine Loris herself, the High Priests health continues to wane. With the state itself so perpetually close to crisis, however, a declaration of his improvement was made to stop potential civil war... and a score of the bravest and most capable Chosen of Loris dispatched in search of cures most exotic. Daily, Lady Voldire braves the ruins farther and farther afield, throwing herself against the horrors found therein not for wealth or power, but instead for a cure, a way to save her homeland and all she holds dear.

Toric Ral Myres D’An, third son of the royal house of Namon, a place where the rule of primogeniture is held as sacred as their god-king. Trained by the finest weaponmasters, scholars, and adventurers within that land across the sea he was still naught but window dressing. Upon his eldest brother’s ascent to the throne he acceded to the traditional exile and departed, plying his skills around the world for food and shelter. Yet it seems dreams of glory and status never completely left him, and one fateful night after a nameless battle on a nameless field of war his decision was made. To make his name in Marama-Fel and carve out his own empire with the power and treasures to be found there... or to die in the attempt.
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 03/25/11(Fri)17:42 No.14365309
A twisted amalgam of honor and cruelty, greed and selflessness, broken pride and hope for a brighter future; Toric D’An has staged raids farther into the wastes than most have dreamed, and while he brings back amazing treasures and knowledge not even such a lure is enough to overcome his reputation as a “Harbinger”; though his prowess is unmatched, none but he have ever returned from these treks. By his own blade or that of the beasts his groups encounter none know, or desire to find out.

Palal Greenward, High Druid of the Blasted Circle. Since the fall of the Nameless Empire in a time before memory the Blasted Circle has attempted to breathe life into the lands once more. A thankless task, few are the Circle’s members and fewer still of power, serving instead as a sort of retirement Circle for wandering druids nearing the end of their days and wishing to finally join a circle so as to live on after death as a spirit of the land. And join they can, for the Blasted Circle turns away none. Few, however, know the truth; that the nature spirits of the barren lanes are as insane and bloodthirsty as the gods themselves. Palal, however, is different. A young savant wielding incredible power, he was a prodigy. Capable of healing even the most horrific wounds or conjuring hurricanes that laid waste to nations, his decision to join the Blasted Circle and dedicate his life to restoring the lands shocked all who were competing for his membership.
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 03/25/11(Fri)17:42 No.14365317
That was 300 years ago. Now, he is nearly a broken man, the powers he so prided in the past having avalied him nothing against whatever the mages of the past unleashed upon the world here. He can only watch in horror and sadness as those under his ward die and are consumed by the lands, turning them into mad abominations themselves. Or so he once felt. Now, driven by grief for the fallen, hope for the future, and pride in his abilities he has turned to the dark knowledge that shattered these lands in the first place. Within the ancient tomes, clearly, lies the secret of what happened here, and once he knows that he will surely be able to fix it. Surely.

Vassik the Red, blood mage and owner of the largest Inn in all Mardana-Fel. Drawn by the promise of power an age ago, he quickly saw that the fools scrambling for the ancient scraps were a resource to be harnessed. And that the greatest power was not from the old ruins, but from the gods that savaged the inhabitants. Now the foremost disciple of the dark goddess Kalasa, he has slowly built up an enormous inn-temple in the center of the city. Known as the safest place in all Mardana-Fel, there has been not a single break-in by the horrors that stalk the streets at night. Indeed, not even an attempt. It is whispered that such safety comes from the profane and horrific rituals Vassik engages in to please his dark mistress, but even clerics and paladins take refuge within his walls after darkness falls upon the city. To slay Vassik would be to slay all he shelters, and destroy the greatest bastion against the horrors outside.
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 03/25/11(Fri)17:43 No.14365320
Still... you have seen, and you have heard. Vassik is not content with being the lackey of Kalasa any longer and has, in secret, begun amassing the old knowledge of the diabolists. To become as they were, a dark sorcerer with the power to contest and slay the gods themselves, to bind them to his will... such is his dream.

Finally, the least and greatest of your finds. Lann and Liss, fraternal twins born and raised in the Fel. Young in age but with the experience of hardened vetarans, the siblings have survived into their late teens amid horrors that make brave men run screaming and slay even the greatest adventurers. Slipping like ghosts into crannies and nooks that no others know about, sleeping together in safety using ancient warded safehouses deep underground and recovering relics the likes of which the world has forgotten exist; they are perhaps two of the most dangerous and deadly inhabitants of the city. Long ago having learned to rely only on one another, they slip through the city putting abominations to the blade and looting caches beyond the reach or knowledge of any others. Arrayed in the greatest of the treasures they have found, with both dark knowledge from the past and bloody experience from the present, they crave more... always more. Enough wealth, power, and knowledge to leave this place; to live in peace in a place where they need not risk life and limb daily.
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 03/25/11(Fri)17:44 No.14365326
Their reputation and prowess, however, damns them even as it lets them survive. Having survived as children among the abominations, what darkness resides within them? No ship captain will take them on for fear of them, and adventurers seek them out to slay for the treasures they have amassed. Even as they defend themselves, though, the tales of their unique finds and horrific skill only grows, and with it both the ability of those who challenge them and the aversion of others toward them. To survive they have taken to secret places in the ruins, nursing their growing contempt and hatred for the weak, mindless violence the adventurers bring and the fearful, suspicious hatred of those who deny them shelter and company.

Striding through the inner city within a materiel form as dusk approaches, you survey the landscape. Broken flagstones with pale, brittle grass growing between them make up the roads, and to either side ruined stone and rotted wood buildings line the barren avenue. A ghost town of memories, horrors and opportunity. In the distance on the central hill stands the Last Refuge, bright with torches and welcoming to all... should they be able to pay Vassik’s fee. Dotted around the landscape are other shelters glowing with light, beacons in the quickly darkening city, spots of life amidst the encroaching darkness. Mara’s Refuge, The Hole, Old Man Statton’s Place, and even Razor’s Edge, sitting on the very outskirts of the Inner City... and more. Many more.

For in this place of death and darkness, tens of thousands reside. It is a place of heroes and villains.

A place that, with all its most interesting dangers and secrets, brings a smile to your face.

First off: Fuck Yeah, I get in at the start.

Now. We're looking for someone to be the Hero in our story. Some of these people are too nasty for my taste in heroes. My personal preference is Voldire, since she's your typical paladin, and is on a quest to serve something higher than herself. Perfect hero material. Getting her involved is also simple: Spread rumors anonymously (or plant them in people's dreams) about a cabal of powerful mages who were developing a magical panacea that could cure any illness. Rumors like that will catch her attention.

Those mages? The Archlords. And when Lady Voldire finds her way to the city where they were last seen, she'll find a barbarian king who's doing all sorts of nasty things. Guaranteed conflict.

How do we level up with deities and such? I assume we can mash them under our thumbs, but a definitive scaling would be nice. Can we toy with them as easily as any other mortal?

Even if we're untouchable, I don't like the idea of other mortals grabbing deific power. I suggest we take care of Vassik by creating a safe zone in the area where no monsters go. And put some sweet-water fountain or something there to give it a leg-up over Vassik's place.

our character has been a bored god for a while. I just want to know, with no implications on the direction of the story. Has the main character ever brought his existence to the attention of the gods? I would think that the revelation that they are nothing in strength combined compared to another would be an interesting event to witness.

Ha, I wanted to add something for the previous thread.

We did not succeed with the First Freed.
    But so what?
Isn't it actually great that we /did not/ get what we wanted? That our plans did not go as we intended.
Isn't this the whole reason why we are doing all of this? Because we are bored and want to see how the mortals can surprise us?

Him not being quite the thing we planned should actually make us happy, because it might have been millions of years since we had something fail for us.
We poked him in one direction and he turned the other way and did something /intresting/

    So cherish the failure.

Also, it could be that in the future he'll live up to our expectations. If not, he will be steamrolled by some other player.

You can't create, at least not anything interesting and capable of complex life. Destroying is easy. All you have to do to destroy a reality is alter a few fundamental constants at random. The universe then basically implodes and eats itself.

I think we aren't allowed to mess with universal constants. We can destroy anything we want though.

The Druid would be very interesting to manipulate. But it seems like none of these heroes have an overwhelming reason to want to fight our Elf.

Going with the twins and Voldire. We need not necessarily choose one, and Heroes tend to be less singly gifted. This way, we can bestow a boon upon each to make a total of 3..

How about we appear to the paladin as a merchant, with a small sample of medicine "from a land of mages"

Enough to visibly relieve the High Priest's symtoms for a bit, but to get more, she'll have to travel there, only to discover the First Freed has put them all to the sword.

Well, most of these guys are incredibly dark for hero material. Probably an oversight on our part, given that we stem from such origins.

Anyway, Voldire's a definite, i'd think, but a hero is never best alone. Hmm, perhaps we could find a ruin, or create one, and steer her towards it. Create an artifact for her to find with which to bestow our boon.

Best, after all, if the Hero(s) have no idea they're being guided.

Plant dreams in the minds of a few people who like to gossip. To the (whatever direction in relation to this place), there is a city controlled by powerful mages who were rumored to have been working on a way to cure any disease. Surely they would be able to help somehow.

She gets there, the Archlords have been murdered and their only living family has escaped somewhere else. The paladin will now search for this girl, and we can drop hints as to where she is. (The Elf's city)

    Y'know...

While Vassik has, literally, no potential as a hero...

He may make a pretty damn good ArchVillain. Someone even Ugantu, our Elf, and our Hero/Heroes might consider teaming up against after their current arc. And it would be CRIMINALLY easy to set him on that path. the man is power hungry enough.

I only point this out because, as is, things are looking like they're going to be very brief. Something that threatens the balance of the world, like say, a dark sorceror going about enslaving gods might spice things up, a little later, if we pace his growth correctly.
    >> Anonymous 03/25/11(Fri)19:03 No.14365959
    Whoa,
all of them are pretty awesome.

I am leaning towards the Druid and the second choice is the Paladin.

In the mean time we can find out about the city itself. See what machinations brought it about, the history of this place, the Nameless Empire, the crazy gods. Why after so many years there are still things to loot.
Go to the deepest of the deep and uncover its secrets.

It will prove a mild amusing minor distraction if nothing else.

We can also screw around in taverns and inns or with adventurers out in the dark and ruins.
    >> Anonymous 03/25/11(Fri)19:07 No.14365987
Personally, I think we could team up the twins and the Paladin VERY easily.

The Paladin could use her reputation to get them out on the condition that they help her look for this cure that the Arch-Magi supposedly have.

    After they're gone >>14365865

and make the druid his pawn. If he succeeds he'll heal the land right? If the old gods are so horrible then maybe we need some NEW gods....

    I so enjoy Mardana-Fel and it's inhabitants.

    Lets string these five together.
Lets begin with Lan and Liss. The next time they adventure, one must be attacked by a beast they've never found before. Whilst they manage to slay it, the one that was caught off guard is falling ill. With very little research, they will find that whatever is ailing the twin is the same that ails the High Priest of Loris. Force them to work with each other.

    Palal..
Perhaps it's time to give him a visit. Tell him that the world can not simply heal, it needs to die too. Death is a part of life. But we are to give him gifts. Like being unable to be cut by any blade. (Stopping him from being controlled by our elf later on.) not sure what else right now..
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 03/25/11(Fri)19:13 No.14366039
Hmm. Selfish, power hungry, or perhaps requiring too much to mold into the proper shape, the majority of these potentials are chaff to be discarded. You could search for more later but... for now, Lady Voldire.

Quickly shifting to the Razor’s Edge, you step forward toward the light only to be met with the raised crossbows of the guards arrayed along the rooftop battlements. Well, to survive so close to the outer city they do need to be cautious. A quick demonstration that you are human, combined with a search and even a once-over with a magical artifact that glows in the presence of the abominations, you are allowed to pay a rather steep fee and take shelter inside.

The inside of the three story building is spacious and open, but not by design. The great common room in the middle of what was once an inn has been expanded upward, by force, into the second story. Ramshackle repairs and boarding sealed off the majority of the bedrooms that were destroyed, but you can still see through to the residents in some places. A great fire-pit has been dug through the wooden floor in the center and blazes fiercely, smoke being funneled up and through the top of the building by a metal flu while a great beast rotates over it. Walking over toward the center you can feel the curious stares of the eighty-odd inhabitants around the room, and a few wave you over. From your time here already you know it is a custom in Mardana-Fel to never dine or sit alone at a fire, and many a newcomer has been murdered in their sleep for doing so... to be a loner is to invite suspicion of corruption, or worse yet, an abomination walking in man-form.
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 03/25/11(Fri)19:13 No.14366049
Across the fire you see the figure of Lady Tissa Voldire. Knee-length red hair bound in a tight braid, she looks every inch the noble warrior. Lightly muscled and well toned, she draws her physical strength more from the divine might granted her than her own training, instead working to increase her speed and skill. High cheekbones and a prominent nose combined with sharp green eyes give the air of an inquisitor in the making, but the easy smile and laughs she shares combined with her nose being slightly offset from one too many breakings lends an air of personable humanity and charisma to her demeanor.

Currently eating a haunch of meat, she is conversing with two knights, both of which she met on the ship coming to the city and are in search of wealth and fortune. Unlike many Paladins, however, she did not turn away their offers for aid and together the three of them have already launched several successful raids into the outer city. At her side are both an enchanted and blessed longsword and a mace glowing with holy might, while across her back is strapped a shield adorned with her family crest, two hawks circling above a red tower. At her feet lies her white enameled plate, apparently feeling comfortable enough to wear only her brown cloth-and-leather jerkin despite the Inn’s proximity to danger.

Readying the vial of medicinal ambrosia you have prepared, you ponder how best to approach the group.

That may strike as a bit too fortuitous, and our goal is to get her on the trail, not fulfill her mission for her, after all. A paladin on a quest would jump at even the rumor of such.

Regarding the twins, we could simply emphasize the danger of the region given what we've heard from our contacts, and mention that going alone would be foolishly risky. Then, mention the famous exploits of the twins, whose skills would UNDOUBTEDLY be useful, maybe even necessary.

Who knows, she might even pick up some others on her own. Don't adventurers have a habit of doing such?

That said, I like the bard idea. Do ourselves up to look like a worldly character, impeccably skilled with some obscure musical instrument. Sit down and play an uplifting song or two, then go introduce ourselves to the paladin.

Something along the lines of "Why hello there, I've journeyed far and wide to find you, my lady. Why, do you ask? Why, because I've just what you're searching for right here..."

Can we NOT appear to everyone all the time? Not that walking up as whomever we want and saying whatever we want isn't an effective way of deceiving people, but we're not really looking to be a character in this story. We should grow a sense of subtlety already, and use our supposed vast cosmic power to just make things happen.

Like this shit that's going on right now. Why are we considering how to give the paladin the quest that we need? That's a waste of our time, boring. Quest hooks are a shitty part of the tale. Just will her to remember that the twins are her best bet for finding a cure, because they know this city like no other, and she'll do it on her own.

It's only certain to go horribly wrong if we don't also prep the twins to meet her in a less hostile fashion than normal- for example, by setting up the matching illness scheme and arranging for them to get word, or use one of their presumably numerous divination artifacts, or something of the sort that this paladin is hunting down a cure for the very thing they need. Why not do something interesting?

I say we do the improbable.

Make Vassik and Voldire fall in love.

Imagine, a man ruled by ambition at any cost, who desires nothing but power, and is willing to achieve it at any cost.

And as he proceeds down the path to power, his doubt grows, as do his abilities. His guilt becomes the driving factor in his motivation, and rather than personal gain, we see him begin to care about those around him.

I want an archvillain to become a incredible force for good, and maybe Voldire can be the one to show him the way.

So what if it's not -the super perfect plan for an epic heroic tale-? We've got to keep ourselves amused with lesser tales along the way.

Like the bumbling super lucky kid from a while back. Epic hero material? No. But fun to watch in our spare time? Hell yes. What stopped us?

With a light, ever so light touch you reach out and find the current location of the twins as you walk toward the trio in front of you... ah, there.

“Lady Voldire, I assume? I’d heard you were around. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.” Surprised, she looks up at your words and, after swallowing her most recent bite and washing it down with some ale, nods. “Well met then, friend, I am she. Pray who might you be, that who knowith me in such a place? I can scarce remember you, mayhap we were met in passing at some prior date?”

Shaking your head, you give a chuckle and hold out your hands, “No, no, I’m afraid not. I simply have heard of you in passing. A man who I traded tales with spoke of you, he was from Moltiva as well. I am Vlad Ratos, a pleasure to meet you.” With that you turn to her two companions and introduce yourself as well. The first, Sir Tondor, is amicable enough and greets you warmly; Sir Pelant, however, does not. His quick introduction and subtle glare for you combined with the overexaggerated mirth when speaking to Lady Voldire has you nearly roll your eyes. No matter, you never intended to be his competition in the first place, and in the second he seems unaware of her order’s vow of chastity. Sad.
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 03/25/11(Fri)20:33 No.14366610
After a brief time strumming the mandolin you brought, you once more engage in conversation. Eventually you manage to steer it back towards her country, “-- so, I ask him what he is doing here, and he says fleeing a brewing civil war. Well, I was surprised. It seems he hadn’t known the High Priest had recovered. After he heard the good news he took his earnings and the first ship out. A decent fellow, I’m glad it’s all settled for him. The way it sounded the High Priest got his hands on some of that mage-medicine from across the continent.” Lady Voldire, for her part, displays an admirable poker face as you tell the story, though her smile afterward is a bit strained. “Yes. I too am beset by relief at the resolution of mine own order and country’s stability... and, prithee tell, what medicine is this you speak of?”

    Excellent.

After a few more minutes detailing how the mages of Kaza sell a universal cure for poisoning and disease (probably due to how they are always poisoning each other, you quip) you segue into the next topic of interest... the twins. “Interestingly, I have heard of a pair of young siblings looking for passage to the isle as well. Or, at least, the last merchantman they approached was bound for it, perhaps they were just looking for a way out.” You shrug as you continue, “I doubt it though, kids here? Hah!.” As if on cue, your “rival” Sir Pelant chimes in, “You don’t know about this city, newcomer. Your tales are nice, but you don’t know the true horrors here. Those two may look like children but they’re deadly foes, and you best believe they exist.”
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 03/25/11(Fri)20:33 No.14366619
Lady Voldire comes to your ‘rescue’ of course, and he relents almost instantly. Making smalltalk for a few more minutes, you eventually stand and leave after bidding them good night. However, you overhear the Lady speaking to her companions behind her and can’t help but show a grin, “Good Sir Pelant, pray tell, what was that rumor you heard of two orphans that took themselves to the streets?” The fool is only too happy to recount it, likely not even imagining what he is doing. Yessss...

The next morning you leave and discorporate before following the group. Exactly as you had suspected and hoped, they enter the outer city and walk (and occasionally fight) their way in the direction of the last place the twins were seen.

Now... how shall you handle the next part of this, you wonder...?

Deciding that this part of your plan is progressing as you desire, you instead expand your senses over the entirety of the city, searching. Ah, there, in a large walled courtyard where a fountain is being fed by one of the remaining city aqueducts. Changing your view you are presented with the sight of a nude teenage boy scrubbing clothes -- several sets -- in the running aqueduct and muttering to himself about how it’s “not his turn” and how it’s “not fair at all”. Well, you say nude, but you note that even bereft of clothes he is equipped with a small arsenal of weapons. On each thigh is strapped a dagger longer than his forearm, and likewise a shorter one is strapped to his left calf. His right wrist contains some sort of mechanism with a spring-loaded dagger within, and beside him is a large bandolier of extremely heavily enchanted knives... it seems anything their blades touch is disintegrated. Alongside it lay dozens of knives, tools, and a belt with myriad pouches, enchanted to be able to hold more than its size would normally allow. For that matter, everything in his possession, even the clothes he is washing, is heavily enchanted.

His brown hair reaches to his shoulders and is raggedly trimmed, likely with a knife. He is only lightly muscled, clearly relying more on agility and his equipment than raw strength. Your opinion is only further reinforced when you observe more closely and note that he is constantly scanning his surroundings, and even the small movements he makes whole washing are those of a predator.
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 03/25/11(Fri)21:32 No.14367139
You are startled, however, when another form comes jogging into the courtyard. A teenage girl, the same age as the boy and with both the same hair, the same looks, and... the same nudity. She also equipped with a dizzying variety of weaponry; a spear across her back, bracer with several daggers strapped to it, daggers at her hips and likewise her ankles. All enchanted, all powerful. Especially the spear. “Laaaaaaaaaaann! Why aren’t they clean yet? I’m freezing!” she says by way of greeting, only to have the boy roll his eyes without even looking up before responding, “Yeah, I see that. Maybe if you want them so bad you could come do it yourself. You were the one who hit the thing’s artery and got us sprayed.” In reply she simply sticks out her tongue and begins throwing daggers from her bracer at a collapsed wooden beam, spelling out the letters L-I-S-S over and over again. Without ever running out, apparently, and you note that the daggers begin slowly fading away about a minute after being thrown. Interesting, and to be able to do that consistently...

Pushing the girl’s mind every so gently, you nudge her toward talking about the future. Several minutes pass, her continuing to throw daggers and he washing clothes, and you begin to wonder if perhaps you were /too/ subtle. As you are considering employing some other method, however, she speaks, “Hey, Lann... what are we going to do after we get out of here? I mean we don’t know anything about... out there.”

He turns to her and frowns, standing up and wringing out the last of the garments before shrugging and replying, “Dunno. We’re rich or whatever from what all those idiots said right? So nobody could get there and kill us for our stuff. And it would be warm, we could even have a feather bed like the Queen of that place... I hate sleeping on rock. It’s cold and I always wake up stiff.” As she is saying all this they both begin loading even more weaponry from the pile into the still-wet clothes, stashing it in convenient hard-to-spot places. Eventually Lann responds, “Yeah, sure. I heard the Orb is really valuable so we could probably get some kind to give us an island for it. An’, hey, where’d you hear about that fea--” he suddenly cuts off. Both of them stand silently for a moment with their eyes closed. Eventually Liss opens her eyes and speaks, “Hear that? Third line just went off. Someone’s coming.”

Lann smiles and flicks his wrist, bringing the spring-loaded dagger to hand, soul-eating blade you note. “Let’s go meet them.”

Quickly flashing your conciousness over the terrain you quickly spot the paladin and her compatriots. It seems not is all well for them, either, as Sir Tondar is laying on the ground screaming, a barbed lance having shot up from a hidden and covered depression in the ground and speared through his groin and shattered his pelvis. You make out the workings of an improvised trap on the haft and trace it back to a triggering cord wrapped around his right ankle... and slowly sawing through it, you note. You approve, no sense in designing a non-lethal trap in environments like this, after all. Still, this situation leaves you questioning how you will force peace between the two groups. To toy with someone’s mind risks not only its destruction but also permanently altering their personality. Fine when all you need are puppets, but when cultivating your heroes...

Mix these. Make them not particularly powerful, but enough to force a truce.

Try to kill Pelant, and save Tondor.

if this becomes unreasonable without making them suspicious, let both of them die but allow the three 'heroes' to live.

Deciding that unity through a mutual foe is the best bet, you simultaneously decide to try and gently persuade Sir Pelant and Lady Voldire to advocate the peaceful option. First, for Sir Pelant. A gentle nudge... yes... but there is some resistance. It seems having one’s compatriot likely killed with a trap does not engender thoughts of peace naturally. Still trying once more, you gently nudge his mind. Gently, geeeently...

And then, quite suddenly and without warning, you feel it crumple like a tin can under your power and force of will. Sir Pelant stops moving instantly, instead standing in a dazed state and staring forward glassy eyed, his mouth hanging open. He even starts drooling a little bit, you are disgusted to note. You are glad you started with him, rather than Lady Voldire herself, and think it best not to continue on to her.

“Sir Pelant? Sir Pelant! Are you well? I need your aid, the bleeding... I can’t stop it without more bandages. Hurry!” Lady Voldire’s voice rings out urgently. Swearing to yourself, you seize control of his mind and hurriedly do as she requests, annoyed at the concentration it will require to guide not only his animate body but also the actions of the beasts you are creating above. And what beasts! Based off of a sort of predatory vulture-demon common to these parts, you have increased the size threefold and rejointed the legs, in addition to sprouting clawed forearms and adding barbed talons along their wing’s edge. The poisonous tail has had the stinger removed, and instead of the normal vise-like razor pincers that make up its mouth you reduced it to a painful -- but not bone shattering -- grip with a dulled edge. You also, sadly, needed to eliminate the wonderful cloud of poisonous spores they gave off for fear of permanently crippling your champions, but sacrifices must be made.

Manifesting six of them and circling them above the soon-to-be battlefield, you give aid to the Paladin and wait. Soon you will see exactly what transpires...

With no warning, they are upon you. You are actually quite pleased with how skilled the twins are. Even knowing they were there as you did, you were unable to pick them out using Sir Pelant’s mortal senses. Admiration, however, comes second as their barrage of daggers comes whistling down from nearly thirty feet above you, an overhang of a collapsed building. Two plant themselves firmly in Lady Voldire’s shield -- when did she get it out? -- and three more are deflected midair by he sword snapping back and forth as a vertical blur. Impressive. You have little time to admire, however, two more less accurately aimed ones head for Sir Pelant. Raising his shield, you barely register the impact before it falls to dust from your arm. Snapping backward with inhuman speed you dodge the second one, less than an inch behind the first. Better to have it explained away as magic than risk leaving Lady Voldire to stand alone against the twins and their magical arsenal.

Shouting out an order to you to defend Sir Tondor she immediately charges into the ruined building, slamming shoulder-first through the door without even slowing. The twins, however, have already relocated... though once again, mortal senses would never have detected them doing so. Circling around at a run from behind the building to kill your erstwhile body and Sir Tondor, you know that this is a fight Sir Pelant would never realistically win. Curling his lips into a feral smile, however, you note that’s fine with you.
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 03/25/11(Fri)23:41 No.14368357
The twins spring from the corner of the building and unleash a flurry of daggers, the two foremost striking your breastplate and gauntlet and disintigrating them instantly, and the following three slamming into your now unprotected swordarm and torso. Undeterred, you launch Sir Pelant forward while letting loose a horrific howl, and for the first time you see shock on the faces of the two assassins. Clearly they were not expecting a man with no sense of pain and no need for nerves or ligaments. Surprise, however, quickly gives way to reaction as they split in different directions. Lann pulls free his short swords and Liss unslings her spear, charging together with perfect coordination. Even “magical” reflexes are unable to defend against this new assault, however, and to do so would be to tip your hand. As you block a flurry of spear thrusts from Liss, Lann moves in to scissor his blades across your exposed spine from behind... only to be met by Tissa Vandire, jumping from the second story of the ruined building and slamming her armored feet into Lann’s chest, pummeling him to the ground.

With a shrill shriek of “LANN NOOOO!”, Liss unleashes a blinding salvo of strikes, literally, flipping the blade in your hand a dozen feet away and lancing her spearpoint through the eyeslits in Sir Pelant’s helmet. You finally let the puppet drop, but it cost her. Raising her shining sword high, Lady Vandire is poised to strike and there is nothing she can do about it. The fragile moment slows, and the air itself feels brittle...
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 03/25/11(Fri)23:42 No.14368371
Then the sky falls in. Your screaming abominations descend upon the fight, buffeting the paladin away and drawing a cry of horror and dismay from both twins as they try to unite and flee. Your positioning was too perfect for that, however, and the three of them are surrounded. With a cry, you launch the twisted forms at the trio, and they promptly forget their feud as they turn to fight the new threat. Slashing, stabbing, the twins moving as one and the paladin burning with holy light, they drop the horrors once after another until none remain. The only sound remaining their ragged breathing, the three size each other up from a dozen feet away. Liss supports her brother as he occasionally coughs up blood from cracked ribs and Lady Vandire leans heavily on her sword, her left arm hanging broken and useless.

Eventually, Lady Vandire speaks, her normally rich voice hoarse from screaming battle cries, “Who are you, that would attack myself and my companions? What cause have you to champion against us?”

“We kno--”, Lann begins, but stops short with a cough. Liss hisses something into his ear and then looks back to the paladin before speaking herself, “We were just defending ourselves from you and your kin, come to kill us and steal away our things.” At this Lady Vandire sighs and removes her helmet with her good hand before dropping it and once more leaning on her sword. “I come not to slay you child, just to hear of your finds and, perhaps, offer you a way from this place. If you would listen then let us speak at a safer place. If not, come, and we shall see who will be victorious this day.”

Suspiciously eyeing her, the twins hold a whispered conference for several minutes before responding; “We’ll listen to you, but try anything and you’re dead. We know a safe spot not far from here. Stay back twenty feet and we’ll lead you there...”

Floating above the scene, you smile. The seeds of something greater are sown, or so you hope.

So, what are our more overarching plans?

I say that since we already set up that one archmage girl as a mcguffin, we can keep doing it.

Assuming we can make Ugantu cooperative to our goals (else just smite and redo, we can make an excuse for our talented elf later), we can make him sterile/impotent and thus seek miss preggo for his heir. And revenge, since she might have done that to him.

We can send our hero(es) to Ugantu's island to find out that, well, every archmage is dead and the only likely person that knows the all-cure is that girl.

She can also be immune to shivving while she's pregnant as a sort of side-effect of being pregnant with the child, which we could give the power to.

At any point we can also make one of the twins fall ill to increase motivation on that end, and unleash a plague or two.

At this point, as far as I can recall:
We have set up the lady elf with control based powers, and she is building a kingdom. We have told her we will have dinner with her when she can have a meal prepared she feels is suitably impressive.

We freed the slave and gave him some impressive abilities. He immediately toppled the local government and freed the slaves. He then did nothing. In response we took his pregnant trophy-slave and gave her the potential to be a master chef, in hopes she'd eventually meet the elf. The ex-slave is having his men hunt her and kill her on sight, but has no idea where she is. We may want to tip the scales in favor of the elf discovering her first.

    Also, everything that happened today.

Worried that your new heroes will tear themselves apart before bonding, you follow. It turns out that the safehouse the twins mentioned is deep underground. Lady Voldire hesitates at first but, lacking anywhere else to go and sorely wounded, follows. A few short minutes and many, many winding turns through underground catacombs later the trio arrives at an amazingly well warded mage’s lab full of treasures from the past. You doubt even the direct gaze of the gods themselves would detect it, and with good reason... among the ludicrously powerful weapons, and other objects stands a shimmering orb hovering over a pedastel in the center. Ripples flow across its quicksilver surface at every movement of someone in the room, but oddly enough it remains perfectly calm despite any natural shakes or jostling.

It is also quite the most potent magical item you have seen in many an age. Though you can not be sure without further study, a brief glance leads you to believe it crafted to bestow godhood upon those who use it.

After directing Lady Voldire to a portion of the room devoid of traps or weapons, Liss helps her brother over to the straw mattress laying in the far corner before retrieving several potions from a self-replenishing rack. Hurrying back to her Lann, she quickly uncorks them and, despite his protests that they taste /awful/, calls him a big baby while one by one holding them to his lips, forcing him to drink. After sitting with him for several minutes until he falls asleep (apparently one of the potions contained a sedative) she tucks the covers around him and cautiously walks over to a now cross-legged and meditating Lady Tissa Voldire.

Without opening her eyes, the paladin speaks; “So... you have seen to thine brother then?” At Liss’s nod she continues, “Good. You have slain my companions, however. For such an ill there must in the end be justice. They were not /good/ men, but they were men none the less. How will you atone for such a transgression?”

Keeping her eyes on the paladin, Liss leans against the orb’s pedestal and pokes it with a finger before answering, watching the ripples spread across the surface. “I don’t know. My brother and I we... just were defending ourselves. People come to kill us and take these things every day. We don’t really want to, but we can’t get out either, so...” she trails off, and then shrugs. “We didn’t do anything wrong, was your fault for being so careless and such. We just want out.”

Lady Voldire, her eyes still closed, gives a grim smile. “Be that as it may child, it was an ill thing you have done and atonement must be given. Have you heard of a place called Kaza?” Liss shakes her head, “I see. Well, should you lack the items here to fulfill my quest I would request that, in repentance and in return for my support in securing passage out of the city, you aid my in my mission until such time as it is complete. Is this acceptable to you?” Liss glances back over her shoulder to Lann, sleeping on the makeshift bed, and shrugs as she turns back. “Probably. I- I want to talk to Lann first though. We always talk everything over first, so...” she trails off, and the paladin nods. “So be it. I will wait for your reply.” You note that even as you watch her wounds are healing, and Liss apparently notices too, quickly retreating back to her brother’s side and sitting down next to him, holding his head in her lap and watching the paladin.

A tenuous beginning but... yes, you think this does indeed have promise, though you worry about how they will fare against the gifts you have given the others.

Because showing up, telling them they're on a quest, etc. Goes directly against being subtle, which was the entire point of being so discreet this whole time.

We can do something like the ship/captain thing above if we have to, give them boons indirectly, etc.

I don't see any need to deal with this thing, but we could do a quick study to ascertain what it does, and if it isn't to our benefit we can just depower it (while mainting the impression that it still is what it's supposed to be), and if we find a good use for it at a later time we can just simulate the effect ourselves.

Also, we should do a quick check up on Ugantu to render him impotent/sterile before he goes on siring children. And perhaps place a nightmare where the mcguffin is telling him that she'll make sure he'll never burden any other women with his spawn.

    >manifest

When we laughed, we destroyed stars and created others. Just from our laughter.

Physically manifesting our power would destroy everything.

This seems something our little elf would like to know about. Perhaps we can arrange for rumors about this sphere to reach her ears. The rumor itself is also unlikely to spread since she isn't the gossiping type, and all her closest minions are undoubtedly loyal.

Pit our heroes against the Slave King, and the Elf against the heroes.

I vote never, but we'll burn that bridge when we get to it. Now isn't the time, and we have no idea if the time will ever come so we'll worry about it later.

    >>14368994

Maybe. I'm not sure we should give it to anybody ever, but we at least need o make sure it isn't out there.

Guys, "You change the orb so it cannot be used without your permission." doesn't make for a very interesting update, here...

    But yeah, you do. Done.

That was like us losing control for a second in our mirth.

Sort of like a cosmic shart.

Manifesting simply has us assume a physical form so people are talking to us face to face. But no, manifesting is not the right move at the moment, I think.

I think the plan was to do that, check in with our other two pawns (and fuck with Uguntu by making him only able to have girls) and set something up to warn us if anything interesting was going to happen here.

And then wait for something interesting to happen. We can't move onto the next step unless the 'Heroes' leave this area.

Possibly find a way to give Larissa a headstart on finding her, because Ugantu is looking for her too.

    That never existed.

    Stop talking about it.

Actually, OP, with one flick of our power, I'd like all such things destroyed and make it impossible to ever make them ever.

We need to check in and see how the girl (what the hell is her name anyway?) is doing. Uguntu is looking for a pregnant woman (of which there are lots) and Laressa is looking for the best cook ever (which is just the girl, and fairly close by). As long as she's alight we'll be fine. We could send a rumor towards our elf, but otherwise let it happen as it does.
    >> Anonymous 03/26/11(Sat)01:32 No.14369122
Do a quick check on the pirate while our brave heroes here come to an agreement, since it doesn't look like they'll kill each other immediately.

Also, I'm thinking that at a later date it'd be fun to mess with the paladin by either showing her that her order is corrupt (if it is corrupt), that her god is false/dead (we could kill her), or otherwise shake her faith somehow or outright depower her... while providing other means for power.

Her name don't matter. Ugantu is not even looking for her, really. He didn't care.

Unless the girl did something like for an abortion (which won't matter if we end up smiting Ugantu anyway) we don't really care about her. She can do as she pleases.

Can we consider giving the twin that's currently asleep a vision quest? Make it his mission to help the paladin make the world right, inception style. Maybe ham it up to convince him to convert to the paladin's religion.

What do the rest of you think?

Actually, make him have a dream where he sees all the bad shit in the world, and then think about trying to fix it.... I mean, what WAS his plan other than leave? What does he plan to do with the rest of his life? Let him see the potential, and nothing more.

I mean, they'll be rich from selling artifacts, so what would they do with all that money? Let's let that thought stew, but not do anything else.

    >> Anonymous 03/26/11(Sat)01:48 No.14369266
My memory is fuzzy, did we make the girl the best cook ever? Or did we just provide the potential? There was talk of Laressa opening some school for culinary arts to attract the WBC, but I can't remember if we ended up doing that or not.

Anywho, it would be the best way fo The Girl to go to Laressa, rather than have Laressa look for the girl.

On the other hand, with Laressa opening schools and paying tuition for talented urchins and such, it would become very difficult for the Heroes to even see the need to oppose her, without our direct intervention.

Direct intervention with the heroes is something I oppose, personally. They should be heroes based on their own merits, and they already have no shortage of magical items as is. The twins are well equipped, and the Paladin is very capable herself. I don't think we even need to give them powers, though I would have advised against that anyways.

Nor are we particularly evil anymore. We got bored of that shit millenia ago. Now, we're trying to craft a story, bring some excitement to this world, and entertain ourselves while we do it.

The heroes, the villains, the situations: All so that we can watch how they interact, and interject every now and then.

Like when we created monsters, and injected them into a situation to further our original goal when our plans seemed to be crumbling? Trying to predict how the mortals would react, and making our plans and setups accomodate that? THAT is the clutch kinda shit we want to be doing.

WHen you're all powerful, the only thing left to test is your mind.

Very true, thats why I like the whole idea of setting up Vassik to be on his way to evil overlord-dom. An unambiguous villain, the likes of which even our anti-hero elf will be tested. How will she respond, as well as the heroes (Giving up on Ugantu for the moment until he can demonstrate some fucking ingenuity and/or ambition)
