He was a proponent of public education and a childrens' show host whose purpose was teaching people the value of kindness and self-respect. He touched the lives of countless people, and is seen by many- rightfully so- as an icon of sincerity and kindness.

Mr. Rogers was the host of a children's television series on American Public Broadcasting. In his show he was very kind and respectful, and spoke to children as equals, not as morons.

He encouraged children to make-believe, to read, to accept others, and to generally be kind and respectful to all people whenever and however they could.

It might seem like an older man speaking to children and playing with dolls would be creepy or something, but Mr. Rogers wasn't. Somehow he managed to do all of this without coming off as a pedophile or a loser, he was just a seriously, genuinely nice guy who made you feel like you could do anything you wanted.

Fox said he sucked because he told kids they were special instead of handing them a rifle and saying if they wanted to eat they needed to go out and get some fresh meat.

    From his wikipedia page:

Mister Rogers went onstage to accept the award — and there, in front of all the soap opera stars and talk show sinceratrons, in front of all the jutting man-tanned jaws and jutting saltwater bosoms, he made his small bow and said into the microphone, "All of us have special ones who have loved us into being. Would you just take, along with me, ten seconds to think of the people who have helped you become who you are. Ten seconds of silence."
And then he lifted his wrist, looked at the audience, looked at his watch, and said, "I'll watch the time." There was, at first, a small whoop from the crowd, a giddy, strangled hiccup of laughter, as people realized that he wasn't kidding, that Mister Rogers was not some convenient eunuch, but rather a man, an authority figure who actually expected them to do what he asked. And so they did. One second, two seconds, seven seconds — and now the jaws clenched, and the bosoms heaved, and the mascara ran, and the tears fell upon the beglittered gathering like rain leaking down a crystal chandelier. And Mister Rogers finally looked up from his watch and said softly "May God be with you," to all his vanquished children.

    He's a demagogue.

Like most of the early 90s generation, I too grew up with Mr. Rogers on PBS. Loved him as a kid, absolutely loved him. But, like all kids, you get it into your head that you're "too old" for certain things, and you begin to throw away what once was your most cherished ideals, shows and possessions. For me, Mr. Roger's Neighborhood ended up being one of those casualties. You go through that period of peer pressure, when making fun of "kiddy shows" is the cool thing to do. To prove to kids larger than you that you're not a sissy, a pushover, etc. Soon, you forget how you really felt about those things.

Even after I had boxed away my childhood, even after I had not seen a recording of Mr. Rogers in years, Mr. Rogers never stopped being my good neighbor. Never stopped telling me that I was special, that make believe was okay, that honesty was the best policy, and that being a nice person was the norm of the world.

Thank you Mr. Rogers. You're part of the reason I am who I am today. Happy birthday.

I met him in 1995, when I was 4 years old. My mom used to work at an ice cream stand outside his studio in the 80s, where he would get a small butter pecan in a waffle cone on sunny days. Apparently my Dad was doing some legal work for PBS back then and my older brother and I were told we could go see Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.

The owl is stitched into the tree, btw. Mr. Rogers had lunch with me and my older brother. He had a fish sandwich, and i remember this because he told us that he came up with a song one time and needed a pick for his guitar, so he he used a fishbone instead.

At the end of the day, my brother and I hugged him. And it was fine then, but looking back I get teary-eyed thinking that I met one of the few truly good people in the world.

The stories about this man are all incredible.

One particular one that comes to mine is the book "I'm Proud of You," which talks about a man who started a friendship with Mr. Rogers. The man, Tim Magidan, had never had someone tell him they were proud of him.

Once, during their correspondence, as Madigan had poured out his heart to Rogers, telling him about his possible divorce, his brother's fight with cancer, and his own issues with his father. Rogers makes it a point to tell Madigan, every time they write, that he is proud of him, and that he loves him.

There is no amount of glory this man could be bestowed, because he'd be too humble to accept it. If there was any one person I would ask to meet me at the gates of Heaven instead of St. Peter, it would be Fred Rogers, just so I could converse once with him.

God dammit, /tg/, this man, more than anything else, makes me believe in Fuck Yea, Humanity, because he is the paragon of what we all can be.

That's how my entire family is, honestly. I find it hilariously out of place; my whole family is very southern, very religious. Everybody but me goes to church every Sunday, and my grandparents, aunts and uncles all pray before a meal. They know I'm an atheist, and nobody cares, because, and I quote my grandfather [who is so Texan he'd bleed oil if you cut him]: "If there's anything I've learned from the Bible, it's 'Jesus says don't be a dick'. Think what you want, you're a good kid."

And even though it can be a harsh, violent world he'll always be there to try and help his neighbor, no matter who or what they are. Because they're all special, and he's proud of them, no matter what.

During the 1997 Daytime Emmys, the Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Rogers. The following is an excerpt from Esquire's coverage of the gala, written by Tom Junod:

Mister Rogers went onstage to accept the award — and there, in front of all the soap opera stars and talk show sinceratrons, in front of all the jutting man-tanned jaws and jutting saltwater bosoms, he made his small bow and said into the microphone, "All of us have special ones who have loved us into being. Would you just take, along with me, ten seconds to think of the people who have helped you become who you are. Ten seconds of silence."
And then he lifted his wrist, looked at the audience, looked at his watch, and said, "I'll watch the time."

There was, at first, a small whoop from the crowd, a giddy, strangled hiccup of laughter, as people realized that he wasn't kidding, that Mister Rogers was not some convenient eunuch, but rather a man, an authority figure who actually expected them to do what he asked.

I think the most important thing Mr. Rogers taught me was trust. It's easy to assume people are, in the end, corruptible. That we cannot be trusted. That beneath every gift is a knife. That no man can live without some dark secret or ulterior motive or hidden face.

Mr. Rogers was exactly what he appeared to be on the surface. He was a kind and honest man with a real faith in God and he believed, because of that, that it was his duty to be the kindest, most saintly person he could. He lives to the creed a lot of people only pay lip service to, and while not a Christian myself, I can certainly appreciate honest virtue wherever it's found.

Mr. Rogers was an outright fantastic human being. He fought against every prejudice, even those coming from members of his own church, because he knew, absolutely, what constituted right and wrong. And he was a great proponent of using technology to enhance modern life - did you know he argued in the Senate to preserve VCRs [the TV companies fucking hated them], because he felt the opportunity to record allowed families to spend time together without missing their favorite programs?

Mr. Rogers death was a definite loss.

I've been an atheist since I was about 10. Not because I hate religion or think it's stupid or anything, but because I don't see any evidence that ay of them are really what they claim and don't have any evidence for the existence of any kind of god... But if anything in the world could convince me that maybe, just maybe, there really is a kind and loving god who watches over us and wants us to be happy... It would be that people like Mister Rogers could exist.

I don't cry often, but thinking about him, and all the good he did, all the kindness and love he gave to the world... and knowing I'll never get to meet him and thank him... It's making me tear up.

You seem to be misinterpreting their words. I don't think either of the posters you quoted has any particular problem with a person being religious, but have seen too many people use it as a tool to justify twisted beliefs. Indeed, there's nothing wrong with religious faith. There's something wrong with a lot of people who claim to have it, though, and this is where many of those who don't follow any faith in particular draw their distinction. I don't think anyone should have to feel sorry for not following a religious path in life. I don't think anyone should feel sorry for being who they are if they try not to hurt other people in the process. We all get angry sometimes. He said it again and again. But if we remember that saying or doing hurtful things is wrong and strive to correct that mistake when we make it, we should never feel sorry about who we choose to be.

    Have a nice day, Anonymous.

I don't know. I didn't draw that from the second at all. The first, perhaps, but I prefer not to make the assumption. In any event, I find it hard to directly disagree with the sentiment that he was an exception to an unpleasant rule myself. Too many seem to use their proclaimed faith as an excuse to be hateful. Mr. Rogers himself opposed other members of his church because he felt they were doing exactly that. It's hard for some to look at religion and not see the many cases of it being used as a tool to justify those wrongs. It's people like Mr. Rogers who give me hope to the contrary.

Indeed so. What too many people fail to realize is that religion doesn't make you more or less of a person. You do. Say the words, don't say the words, it doesn't make a difference if you aren't a fundamentally good person. Mr. Rogers was. Nothing would have changed that.

I don't have any on hand, and I don't know if anyone here does. I plan to go to sleep soon, but I'd be happy to look up sources in 3.5 in order to facilitate it.

However, I have one demand of such a project.

Mr. Rogers was someone who actively championed the causes of good. I put forward that while he would love and cherish any and all, even those who did not maintain their faith or even apostates of his church or temple, that he would not grant spells to individuals simply for worshiping him; and that he would encourage them to seek to do good as they are, never turning away help or refusing aid to those who need it or seek to aid others.

    Vows of non-violence are manditory.

I'd like to respectuflly disagree with you on that point.

Every single person is special and unique because there is no other person that can be you. You are unique because you are you. There is only one person in the whole wide world that can be you, and you already are you.

I'm sorry, but again I'd like to respectfully disagree.

You see, it's not what we look like on the outside that makes a person who they are (Or you, you), it's what's inside. Inside their hearts and inside their minds they are two different people, two unique souls. Though they may look the same, they are completely unique.

Thank you again for challenging the concept. Open minds are the best kind of minds.

Never forget of how proud of you I am, and how special you always are.

It's been years since I've even given a passing thought to Mr. Rogers. I remember, dimly there in the back of my mind, that I used to watch his show when I was a small child, but that was years and years ago.

Looking back on it now, about how my parents divorced when I was very young, and I had to move from school to school, his show was one of the very few constants in my life, and that I think it played a very important role in shaping who I am today - in making it so that even though I realize and recognize that bad things do happen in this world, that people can be mean, or wicked, that good things happen, too - people do good things for other people, most of the time without even giving it a passing thought. He's why I'm an optimist, why I can still (quietly and privately) believe in a loving God.

    We miss you, Mr. Rogers.
