Guys, I keep hearing stories of mythical weapons. Not like, the old time stories of them, like Excalibur and Kusanagi, but modern day ones.

Ones like The Colt Killer, made by Samuel Colt, a gun that can supposedly kill anything.

The End, a shotgun constructed by Mister Winchester himself, something which apparently stopped his wife from trying to murder him, as she believed he was possessed by the Devil.

The Armageddon, a tommy gun made by John T. Thompson, after he disappeared for 4 years while designing the Thompson Repeater.

I'm just wondering, have you hear of any other guns or weapons or even artifacts like these? Or better yet, source material for the things I just mentioned...

But I saved that to my "creatures" folder.

It might end up being in one of my next RPGs..

I mean, it's kind of against the feel of the canon for Battletech, and I don't know how it would actually harm a player, but fuck it, that thing is terrifying.

    The Portable Gatling Gun.

Like a normal Gatling gun, but it doesn't require a large vehicle mount and a 1000 lb ammo crate. It is rumored to be haunted by a restless ghost of a huge Russian guy. The ghost does nothing but stand in front of the user with a look of disapproval on his face.

A TV Show on the CW about two brothers who go around hunting supernatural creatures; it's got a huge breadth of lore ,ranging from simple shapeshifters, wendigo and demons to fucking angels. They're on the 6th (and maybe final) season, where they're dealing with fucking Echidna, more or less. As in greek 'mother of all monsters' Echidna.

The Colt is a gun from that show, that can literally kill anything, but the shotgun and tommygun aren't. The only thing in the show the Colt hasn't been shown to kill was fucking Lucifer.

Actually, I like the idea of legendary weapons.

Really, not every design made is suitable for mass production or use by the average man. Maybe they require absurd amounts of time and skill to produce, or maybe use and maintenance is so particular that only the extraordinary can hope to use them.

Even in the real world, there are numerous examples of guns so absurdly powerful or so high maintenance that no army would field them- see prototypes for the G11 or Pribor.

The only similar thing I've used was a .700 nitro express double barrel in a modern game. It's a ludicrous rifle, overpowered even for elephants, but against the spawn of evil, there is no such thing as overkill.

For a Weird Wars game one of my players is carrying a modified Thompson Light Rifle. It has two barrels and is hooked up to magical battery.

The battery is used to fire the bullets at a massive rate of fire (like the metal storm system, except it doesn't fire special caseless rounds with electricity and a computer, it uses magic lightening to set off the primer on regular bullets). Using more power from the battery charges the bullets, letting them harm magical creatures.

...It also explodes violently on a critical failure

    The "Mare's Leg"
The wooden parts are made from an actual Mare's Leg, of a workhorse who lived way, way, way too long. About sixty years by some accounts. The gun is said to keep someone unearthly calm during stressful situations, allowing them to make correct decisions unharried.

... The reason they didn't mass produce was because it was IMPRACTICAL... Firing 12 12-gauge shells in 2.5 secs would knock the shooter off his feet and be impossible to aim. Not to mention, it used a cylinder design, which meant you either had to reload each shell one at a time, or carry around extra, weighty cylinders.

The clip fed USAS-12 was more practical.

Okay, I don't know about any of this obviously made up crap, but I can tell you about some seriously nasty real life weapons that would make a pc or a bbeg quite thoroughly shit themselves. Take for instance the XM16. The XM16 was the original design for the M16, the prototype if you will. When Eugene Stoner originally designed the rifle, it was much different from what we know today. The original design had a 1/14 barrel twist rate in the rifling, and with the clean burning 65 grain 5.56x45mm ammunition the firearm was tested with and created for, it would actually cause cavitation and hydrostatic shock ("knockdown power") in targets much greater than an AK47. The military changed it though thinking their version would function better. When special forces tested the weapon in the field in Vietnam, the rifles solid black profile, massive wounding capability, and pinpoint accuracy coupled with surgical presicion earned it the moniker 'Black Death' amongst communist forces.

When I say hydrostatic shock, I'm not talking about that "damage to central nervous system" stuff; I'm talking about what happens to the tissue, muscle, and flesh in your body when you get shot.

Also; pic related to general subject. It's the new 5.56mm round. Apparently the US Military or someone got pissed and tired of hearing people bitch about the 5.56 mm round, so they invented one with a massive steel spike in it. It can apparently travel through steel quite effectively.

    "Foot of the World"
A wooden pegleg, crafted from the last remaining splinters of Yggdrasil.
Inside it is contained the only key to form a portal to a sanctum where all of Norse magics have lain dormant for ages, Valhalla.
It is said the magics of the item can only be unlocked by another item named the "Horadric Box", a gift passed down through generations of Egyptian Pharaohs.
The Foot's latest supposed whereabouts are dated back to the early feudal times. An unfortunately vague account of some very powerful demonic possession in a small town, where previously, a orphan boy begun channeling the powers of the Leg in order to accumulate personal wealth.

If the XM16 was the surgical death machine of special forces, then the next firearm would probably best be described as the vengeful striking hammer of God enraged; the XM109. The XM109 was created by Barrett, the American rifle company of M107 fame. Concerned that the M107 might not be enough to truly cripple some targets, Barrett decide to up the size of the ammunition that there rifles were firing, because apparently, .50 caliber BMG was not enough. Do you remember in Call of Duty 4, the .50 caliber sniper rifle; that was an M107. Yes, the XM109 is more powerful than the rifle that can blow a man in half. Thus we have the XM109. The XM109 was created to be the ultimate anti-material sniper rifle. Don't be mistaken though, other than the shape of the firearm and it's intended use, it really has nothing in common with any other sniper rifles, as it isn't even a rifle; IT'S A CANNON. Due to the immense size of it's ammunition, it is classified as a cannon; because the conventional caliber measurement system can't label a round of ammunition as big as the XM109s 25mm Cargo Round. As a matter of fact, it's ammunition is over twice the diameter of a .50 caliber bullet. Just think of it this way: the XM109 fires a bullet that is the exact same round as is fired from the XM29 OICWs grenade launcher. Still not good enough for you? Okay, okay, the bullet is the same caliber as the ammunition used in Apache gunships and an AC130s 25mm cannons, which they use to hunt tanks.

Behind a dark background has THE LAZY GUN.

A gun capable of destroying anything it is aimed, with the force used to destroy the target not exceeding the force necessary to do so. Sometimes the object spawned is strange even humorous (this I made up myself)

    Example:
Aimed at a chair? An anvil spawns and falls on it.
An elephant? Shark bites its head off
City? An ice cream meteorite Falls from the heavens.

Demons. Gods. Devils. More importantly, it kills anything it shoots with one shot.

If I handed you a regular Colt pistol, and instructed you to kill a bull elephant with one shot, could you do it? Maybe. But if I had you repeat the process with several more, it might not always kill in one shot. And for something supernatural, like a demon, it probably wouldn't do shit.

At the risk of starting an internet argument, .45 ACP can not into penetration. As long as it doesn't have to penetrate through much it's a great round for killin', but if it comes up against something that resists penetration (like the skull of a large animal or a durable barrier) you're gonna have a problem. Meth addict in a hoodie? No problem. Biker with a thick leather jacket? Minor problem. FBI guy wearing body armor? Problem.

Magic swords are more interesting for the unusual properties ascribed to them, like how Excalibur's scabbard protected the person holding it. If you want to invent properties for legendary guns, you should think a bit outside the box. "It shoots... really well" is pretty boring, even a step down from "you never have to sharpen it."

Let's try one with a bit of a darker story to it. This is a very old gun, a 16th-century wheellock muzzle-loaded pistol used to assassinate a minor Czech nobleman. If it had a name, it is now forgotten, along with that of the heathen sorcerer who helped to make it. It shows signs of heavy use, but it remains as reliable as its type could have been expected to have been when it was new. The handle has clearly been replaced many times; the current one is made of ivory.

Since its accuracy is poor and it only holds one shot, it wouldn't be of much use compared to a well-made modern firearm. However, this weapon has a history. A dark rite was used in its construction, and it is said that if, when loading the weapon, you apply just a drop of your own blood to the bullet, and speak the name of your target just as you take aim on him (or her, or it), it will hit if possible. Such a wound will be fatal without exception, though if you only grazed the target it might be due to gangrene or something.

It is also said that the weapon is cursed, and that if you invoke its ability in this way, you will soon be shot yourself, and the weapon will come into the possession of the one who killed you.

    The Sactified Punt Gun.
This "little" gem features stoping power enough to bring down the biggest super natural baddies, and features a size best suited to the most outlandish Anime. This blessed version of an old favorite though is typically mounted on a punt boat and used in fleets of 15 to 30 to hunt Imps! A few rouge priests though have commented on the weapons effect on everything up to a Balor.

Here's a happier one. During WWII, a member of the French Resistance came into possession of an American tommy gun. One day he was forced to hide it, and stashed it in the church of a sympathetic priest - right underneath the altar, in fact. There it stayed for several weeks, as the priest above prayed for peace on earth and deliverance from evil.

Its history since then is full of adventure, but it has a very peculiar property. Perhaps miraculously, a bullet fired from this weapon will not hit an innocent (though the question of how "innocent" you must be to be safe from it has theological implications I don't care to discuss here). Open fire on an upstanding civilian and you would think you had the marksmanship of an Imperial stormtrooper. Press it against the head of a child and it will jam. Those who have nothing to fear from God also have nothing to fear from this gun. Its name? Gracieux.

Not OP, but I'll take that challenge.

This is a mythical grenade. I know what you're thinking: how can a grenade be mythical? Because technically it's not the bomb proper, but the pin. Pull the pin out of an ordinary grenade and ever so carefully put this one back in, and then give it a day or two to let the voodoo soak in (because it is powered by voodoo). Carry it with you on the battlefield, because if it's not soaking up the souls of those killed by violence nearby, it's not getting any stronger.

When you're ready to use it, pull the pin out again and throw it, and marvel at you completely botch the toss, and it goes flying in some unexpected direction... and blow up a target you didn't know was there, but which was far more important and dangerous than the one you were aiming at (a service which sets free all the souls it captured). Keep the pin and put it in your next grenade. You might want to attach something to it to mark it as separate from the others.

The M2 Murphy. This weapon is a standard .50 caliber machine gun and fires in the same manner and function as any other of the same make and model. However, when set in a static position, as long as the firer has available ammunition, his position cannot be overrun by anything that could feasibly be stopped by a .50 caliber round. However the last person to use the weapon is prone to seemingly random mishaps which are never fatal but always very inconvenient such as infections, and even serious wounds.

It CAN kill anything in one shot. Guy gets shot by it at the end of the first season in the leg and lives. I think someone else might have gotten winged by it later on. Witch-bitch also stopped one in mid-air with her freaky demon magic, so it's not infallible.

Still, cool. Sam Colt made it for a supernatural hunter in the 19th century. It's a Colt-Paterson, one of his first revolvers, but it fires cartridges instead of cap-and-ball, which is probably a bit anachronistic. He made 13 bullets originally, each with a number on the cartridge it and various runes and shit on the bullet itself. "Non timebo mala" is carved into the barrel.

The lack of penetration is exactly WHY .45 is so good at killing. If a round sticks in the target ALL kinetic energy is spent on the target, rather than a portion being spent on the target, then the back of his clothing, then the wall behind him and so on until the bullet stops.

Overpenetration is a waste of perfectly good killing power.

And about body armor? Pistol rounds just straight up suck against body armor, chief, not just .45 ACP. Most anything but the lowest levels of body armor will stop the any pistol round save for rare outliers like Tokarev which is designed as a penetrator.

Anyways; if this thread is still alive tomorrow I'll think something up to add on.
