It actually fits the combat style of a rapier too. The spinning motion of the drill can help parry attacks, while the tip of the drill would be able to let it more easily penetrate thick hide and armor.

You know why rapiers replaced heavy cutting swords in real life, right? Fast as all fuck, and much sturdier than people expect...thicker than a typical broadsword, for instance, albeit narrower in breadth. You'd be able to parry more quickly, strike and feint more quickly, and stick the blade right through their eye, and we all know that a piercing weapon beats a slashing weapon when it comes to heavy armor. See the estoc for details.

I've posted this before, but dammit it's the most realistic swordfight I've ever seen in a movie; the final duel from Rob Roy:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27M5KWI_q50

Basket-hilted broadsword versus rapier (is it a rapier? my sword-knowledge isn't that great. It might be a smallsword), and it's just so damned clear from it what a massive advantage a light thrusting sword has over a heavier sword in an unarmored duel.

Rippers of the Dark Eldar does something similar, but it doesn't really pierce something and then releases it's weapon. It's just mono-filament polymers shot at the enemy at high velocities.

In the first fight he uses a smallsword IIRC, in this one he seems to choose a rapier, but what he ends up using looks like a dueling saber (which is a saber pretty much only in name, being a smallsword blade with a saber hilt).

Do not read too much into that fight, the weight and slowness of the Scottish backsword are greatly exaggerated, as is how fast Rob tires from swinging it.

Longsword techniques against plate consist of:

-Grappling (locks and throws using the sword as a lever)
-Smacking them in the head by using the pommel/cross as a hammer/pick
-Stabbing them through the weak spots (visor, neck, armpits and other parts with "just" mail)

A rapier is shitty against plate, but so is a falchion.

This is quite right. But it doesn't "cut" through plate. It just finds a soft spot in your armor (there ALWAYS are soft spots in the armors) and pierce the joints, geting into soft flesh.
In a real situation you die after 3 or 4 minutes of bleeding, specially carrying a fullplate and runing from a battlefield.

In 40k... dude, everything is possible.

Piercing swords are called as such because they're good at piercing. In battle they could penetrate the weak points of the enemy armour, such as the seams.

Also, they obviously work. The spaniards were famously deadly.

Rapiers are civilan weapons developed for unarmored fighting. Sabres are cutting weapons, developed for battlefield use, but only became really popular once armor began to disappear from battle. Also they didn't exist in medieval times, they appeared in the renaissance (though a case could be made for sabres, since curved swords did exist, like the very choppy falchion and several oriental swords, but they weren't great against armor).

If you mean thrusting blades which might've evolved into the rapier that were made for armor piercing, that'd be true.

I saw seven different instances in which Rob could have won the fight instantly by simply being more aggressive and pushing his weight and height advantage. It may be considered dishonorable (read: smart), but that basket hilt is meant to be used as a steel boxing glove. If rob had just got in close and punched that fucker on the nose, he could have broken him with his bare hands.

Well its much less stupid compared to a chainsword, but whatever.

A small note, that if the spinning drill is too massive it will act as a gyroscope increasing the rotational inertia of the sword making it more difficult to "swing."

Really the intelligent method would be a weapon with a thermal lance on the end of it and quickly burn through anything you thrust at.

That's it. I'm sick of all this "+1 bleeding rapier" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. drill rapiers deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine drill rapier from Spain and my local hardware store for 18,000 dollars and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even drill through the heavens with my drill rapier.

Drill Rapier smiths spend years working on a single drill rapier and twist it up to a million times to produce the finest drill blades known to mankind.

Drill rapiers are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut or drill through, a drill rapier can cut or drill through better. I'm pretty sure a drill rapier could easily stab straight through a knight wearing full plate with a simple thrust.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe was known for it's awesome furniture? That's right, they were using their awesome drill rapiers as handy tools to build their empires. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the drill rapiers first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Drill rapiers are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Drill rapiers:

    (One-Handed Exotic Weapon)
    1d20 Damage
    15-20 x6 Crit
    +4 to hit and damage
    Counts as Masterwork

    (Two-Handed Exotic Weapon)
    2d12 Damage
    13-20 x6 Crit
    +8 to hit and damage
    Counts as Masterwork

Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting/drilling power of drill rapiers in real life, don't you think?

tl;dr = drill rapiers need to do more damage in d20, see my new stat block.

Not the guy you're responding to, but I think it may be harder to get in close like that than one might think. If not physically than at least psychologically. Consider that a rush to bring you into that range could easily skewer you on his blade, which he can bring up almost instantly, and possibly faster than you can deliver a good punch.

Not saying it's not possible, or even probable, I had the same thought at first, but I fenced for several years and I think it might be a little more difficult than it appears at first glance.

in before fencing =/= fighting, I know but I think the point remains.

The reason it hasn't been concieved of before is because in 40k it pays to be the shootiest/choppiest. Precision is all too often sacrificed in the name of power (and rightly so, since oftentimes stoping something with huge FUCK OFF weaponry is more important that doing it with precision).

I had an idea for drill rapiers for a homebrewed setting I was working on awhile back.

Here's a rough picture of it being used as a walking stick by a robot beak doctor.
