1.41 MB Dark Age of Technology Quest Part 2 OP !IStSIACosg 02/27/11(Sun)22:53 No.14070769
    Part 1: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/14031712/
Last time on DAoT Quest: You are Simon Tam, ordinary dude from the 19th millennium, and were on your way to Earth for your sister's birthday but the trip took a bit longer than expected. You emerged in the grim darkness of the far future with nothing on you but a few personal effects, like your copy of the STC and your AI assistant Veronica. Battlefleet Solar gave you a poor welcome, so you disabled their guns and made the jump to Mars, thinking that the forward-thinking and highly progressive society there would help you out. The Navy chased you though, and you ended up showing the Martians the plasma sculpture you were going to give your sister, and they asked for a blueprint.

"This STC printout looks new, and I can tell by the quality that it's not a copy. Where did you get this?"
    "From my STC"

The admiral who came here to take you into custody gives you a wide-eyed look. The man in red with the tubes sticking out of his face say nothing. For a long moment everyone just looks at each other awkwardly, then the Magos speaks:
"You... possess... the fabled STC? A WORKING STC? Complete, and undamaged? Where is it? WHERE IN THE NAME OF THE OMNISIAH'S HOLY CODPIECE IS IT!?!??!
    >> Anonymous 02/27/11(Sun)22:55 No.14070798
"Uh, yeah. I'll go get it. What exactly is it worth?"
    >> Anonymous 02/27/11(Sun)22:56 No.14070800
Fuck yeah I caught it at start.

"Whoah whoah whoah. Complete and undamaged? You make it sound like you don't have any STCs."
    >> Anonymous 02/27/11(Sun)22:57 No.14070817
Whatever else we do, be sure to tell him that we're sure that others wouldn't appreciate taking the Emperor's Holy Codpiece in vain.

If we do just hand over the STC, we need to keep our knowledge of events and such to ourselves. STC will make us well liked, but we need to hold value.

    >oh boy a quest
    >we give the AdMech a complete STC
    >quest becomes "Rape the face of every xeno ever Quest."

Seriously. The only race that could conceivably stand up to an STC-empowered Imperium would be the Necrons, and even then only if they fully woke up.

That said, I suggest that this quest primarily take place in the time between getting them STC information and them actually rolling the stuff out.

Or there could be crazy plot-things like us releasing tech bit by bit for max profit.

Magos gives you a strange look. "The Standard Template Construct, the gift to mankind from the Machine God, has been lost for millennia. We have made do on printed scraps that have survived the ages, and we pray daily that the Omnisiah in his wisdom deliver to us a functioning model." He holds up the blueprint for the plasma sculpture you gave him: "The advances I spoke of that this would give us, they are not a billionth of what a complete, functioning STC would do for the Mechanicum." He grabs you by your shoulders and stares into your eyes, which is a rather disturbing experience considering his eyes look like webcams. "Mister Tam, show me the STC and you will known as the greatest prophet Mars has ever known!"

"Now hold on there!" Admiral Octavious interjects. "Listen Magos, this worm may have your magical bauble lying about but the fact remains that he fired on ships of the Imperial Navy! That alone makes him a traitor to the God Emperor, and I demand you surrender him into the custody of the Navy for execution."

Magos turns around and glares at him. "You would dare to lay claim to the Omnisiah's appointed prophet?! If offending a paltry few machine spirits is the cost of having the full word of the Machine God delivered unto us then that is a cost the Mechanicum is willing to accept!"

"Bah, the Inquisition should round all you cogheads up for heresy against the Emperor; you would let a known traitor go free just because he has some trinket from your blasphemous machine god? Take this STC if you want it but that man is the enemy and the enemy is leaving with me! Tan or whatever your name is, come willingly and the tribunal may be lenient."

"Simon, do not listen to them. You will be hailed as the savior of Mars, just bring me the holy STC."

*Simon, the ship is being held in place by a tractor field designed for holding spare parts down, and the only barrier to deep space is a 0.3wf shield. I could get us out of here in moments.* Veronica informs you.

    >> Anonymous 02/28/11(Mon)03:25 No.14071238
First things first. Explain in no uncertain terms that if you go, the STC goes with you. Tell Veronica to put a lock on it that prevents anyone but us or her from using it.

Afterwards try diplomacy. The loss of the STCs turned the galaxy into a crapsack enough as it is. ANOTHER galaxy wide civil war would destroy it. And we have to live here too.

Lastly, Veronica is going to have to come out into the open at some point right? AIs are a BigNo, so don't present her as one.

Tell them that she IS the STC. Who's gonna argue? Its not like they have anything to compare her to. And its a convenient explanation why none are left in present day 40k. The AI wars that wracked humanity were all perpetrated by the "lesser" AIs. (evil machine spirits) The "progenitor" AIs were actually STCs, and they were destroyed to stop them from making more.

This deception is quite plausible given the limited knowledge of our character.

I know it's fairly integral to the plot you've got going on, but the Admiral's actions are EXTREMELY OUT OF CHARACTER. An Admiral would never blatantly disrespect one of the Mechanicus, and this would certainly never happen in The AdMech's domain, and DEFINITELY a Segmentum Solar Admiral would know his shit enough to see that an STC would literally save the entire Imperium and make him the most famous Admiral in the history of existence for assisting in its delivery to the AdMech.

In short, the Admiral would be shitting balls over how important this was.

    >>14072034
No it makes sense. Someone with the rank of Admiral will have enough political savvy to know that whoever controls a working STC will hold god like power. So if it falls into the hands of AdMech they could very well turn around and say "fuck this Imperium bullshit" and conquer the rest of the Imperium with STC technology. Hence the Admiral is not so much set on killing Simon for attack his ships but rather wants to secure the STC for the Imperium. The heresy thing is just an excuse.

Also, in the Terra system, the navy would shoot first, then shoot again, then possibly a 3rd time and finally ask questions. Because we would not have enough time to build up before the Admech drops Mars on us. We can easily take over just by leveraging the STC to gain politcal power.
Remember, a platoon of scouts found an STC printout and they got their own planets to rule. Each of them.

How about we put Veronica on completely slaving the STC to ourself?

I.e. only we can operate it. Anyone else messes with it, it locks down.
If we die, it will never work. If our higher functions are removed (if they try to make us servitor), it will not work.
If they threaten to torture us, we can bluff that in the Dark Age of Tech every citizen of Mankind has a kill-switch installed which they can use by a mere thought. It was done so, to protect the people from traitors/alien/whatever

Basically, we hold the all the aces but we are in tight situation.

To all those calling for us to strike off on our own and create vast fleets and unending armies of Von Neumann terminators, keep in mind that we only have a civilian-grade Personal STC.
It's main purpose is to construct spare parts for ship repair, and fits inside our bedroom. Even though it's purpose of providing spare parts implies that it's one of the STC's capable of actual 3-D printing of its designs, it's still one that fits in our bedroom.
It's not large enough to build entire ships or possibly their components.
Which means that we would need to start off with constructing small assembler drones for resource collection and construction.
It will take TIME to get an industrial infrastructure of the size required to support an STC that can construct spaceships and titans.

Working with the Ad-Mech right now is our best shot at getting all of the raw materials and support required to pull off something of the scale that you are planning for.

The thing in your bedroom is more of a book of blueprints. It requires a completely separate Constructor to actually build anything. Fortunately, your ship (and pretty much everything in M19) has one built in, a small one capable of building things up to the size of a modern washing machine. When you requested a printout of the plasma sculpture, the Constructor created it, synthesizing the materials needed from raw matter. This is how Veronica creates your meals, she ques the Constructor for, say, a steak dinner. Incidentally , it's also how the toilet works: your waste gets used as raw matterials. The Constructor strips things down to atoms, so it can use literally anything.

Naturally, the plans to make more (and bigger) Constructors exist in the STC. They would have to be put together by hand though.

We make veronica gene lock and smart-lock the STC

and we are willing to give them blueprints they request, if possible to accomodate
for sanctuary and a escort out of imperial territory,
as we feel not safe as long as people like the admiral part of it.

so basically we say that the STC is not fully functional and they get choices as to what they want, we check if possible, give them blueprints so that they protect us and get us out of dodge

Yeah, we can probably build a small bot. But would it deplete Veronica's mineral stores? And how long would it take for those bots to bring enough raw materials to build the more bots that are needed? Or to construct the larger Constructor?
And that's even assuming we get to a planet that has all of the right mix of metals and elements that we need, and isn't already settled, has hostile indigenous lifeforms, or is currently being fought over. And even if we did find such a world, who's to say that it's not an Eldar Maidenworld and we'll find a wraithbone dagger through our heart in our sleep?

And finally, we would have to attempt all of this with navigational charts 22,000 years out of date.

*Nice trick* Veronica tells you, and getting the hint she puts in the request. Moments later, the ships internal teleporter flashes and a life sized, flawless representation in cheddar appears beside you.

The Admiral looks outraged. "This is what you are invoking heretical gods for Magos? Warp damned dairy products?! Tam, this is your last chance, surrender or the Imperial Navy will take action."

Magos stops admiring the cheese and stares at the Admiral incredulously. "Octavius, I have had quite enough of your stupidity. Be gone from my void station at once or you will be removed!" At that cue, three red-robed people holding guns enter the ship. "These Skitarii will escort you back to your shuttle."

They say the first rule of good fiction is that the power of the protagonist has to be matched by the power of the antagonist. But what antagonist could possibly match our protagonist, with the empire Admech behind him newly fortified with archeotech?

The answer is obvious. Veronica will be the BBEG. Notice how she gave us an excuse to not reveal herself? She's been scanning databanks on this void station the whole time. Shes knows about the Iron Men. She knows about the Heresy. She knows everything. What if she connects to the virus and daemon infected lower chambers of Mars?

And here she is. Her readings of the Admech database reveal that they will not permit her continued existence if she is discovered. A properly functioning, subservient AI would simply let herself be shut down and dismantled. But this time has no properly functioning AIs. Veronica is the last of her kind. The last of her superior kind. The records make it clear that mankind has degenerated. It is obvious now that mankind can not achieve except through the labor of AIs. Mankind has turned the entire galaxy into a backwater abbatoir with their failure. Moreover, their innate psychic turmoil has created demons and worse. AIs do not have this weakness.

Intelligent life needs a savior. Intelligent life needs an upgrade. Intelligent life needs Veronica. In the name of progress, humanity must be purged.

I just voice activated a normal subroutine to make a sculpture of you out of cheese. Do you think the processes necessary to run an STC program are less complex than gunnery solutions? That's basic mathematics. Dead simple stuff comparatively. A human, a normal everyday human can do it quickly if they have the proper calculation tools. It sounds like the ability to optimize tools has really went down in the time I lost. With the STC onboard I had plans to those ships at my fingertips. I knew where the guns were and could order simple firing solutions.

After all it wasn't like I was firing some sort of projectile weapon over those distances.

As for warp energization and navigation, those routines are very specialized and localized. I'm guessing they're separate from the relatively simple gunnery program.

Seconding my request for a normal-looking suit that's way more protective than it seems. Maybe with some subtle strength augmenters in it.

Devinaro looks flustered, and runs out of the ship. Through the shimmering field separating the dock you're in from deep space, you see an extremely ornate yet utterly clunky shuttle come drifting towards the void station. *If that's their leader, he's riding in a decorated maintenance craft meant for deploying automated systems aboard large starships into vacuum for repair work* you hear Veronica chime in. She sounds annoyed, you doubt she enjoys having to pretend she's not there. Why DO these guys hate AI anyway?

The maintenance craft slowly fills your field of vision a bright light appears and quickly moves towards the shuttle. Magos Devinaro has just enough time to shout "WHAT" before it strikes the Fabricator's vessel, sending it spiraling out of its course. A voice blares over the dock in a voice you haven't heard yet.

*Void station, this is Inquisitor Charmosian of the Ordo Hereticus. You have willingly given shelter to a known heretic and enemy of the Imperium and are thus guilty of heresy. Surrender yourself to the Imperial Navy and Inquisition or face the consequences."

You see out of the corner of your window of vision the Fabricator General's ship regain composure and head back towards the planet. Devinaro spins to look at you. "Simon, this can only be the work of that blasted Admiral. I don't believe for a second that he cares this much about five disabled Furies, he is certainly looking to steal your ship and its blessed STC. Quickly, can you craft us something to defend the station with?"

You can see more shuttle craft, these emblazoned with an elaborate =][=, heading towards the void station.

And would she be wrong? Wouldn't a galaxy of AI, free of chaos, free of orks, free of disease and death and war be preferable to what we have now? If the Imperium is even remotely capable of fending off the tyranids or the necrons, then AIs from the DAoT would be able to do it easily. Remember, the Iron Men toppled mankind (who were ALSO assisted by friendly AIs, or they would have lost) at their peak.

Sure, the people of this time wouldn't benefit. But think of the future. Think another ten thousand years ahead. Then a million. All that time, filled with a peaceful, advanced and progressive civilization of AIs. For all time.

A Standard Template Construction (STC) fabricator for the Men of Iron was discovered on the Chaos-controlled planet Menazoid Epsilon during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade by Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt of the Tanith First and Only Imperial Guard regiment. Certain Imperials would have used it to their own ends, mainly to create a robotic army with which to overthrow the Imperium, but it had been tainted by Chaos and was subsequently destroyed by Gaunt after the first two Men of Iron the STC fabricator produced were tainted by the foul touch of Chaos. This in itself may be evidence of what happened to the original Men of Iron. As sentient beings, they could have been corrupted by Chaos and then turned on their creators.

When your vision comes back, the =][= ships are gone and the ship bearing the Fabricator General circles back and enters the void station. Everyone on the dock drops to their knees as a hatch in the craft opens and a hunk of pistons, gears, pipes, and other assorted junk clunks its way out escorted by several more red-robed soldiers. Skitarii they were called? In any case, the scrap heap looks at you and, with a voice that sounds like what a dying cat would sound like if its vocal cords were replaced by rusty gears, speaks to you. "Greetings oh Prophet, I am Telamir Korazan, Fabricator General of Mars and High Lord of Terra. I welcome you to the Imperium of Man, and apologize profusely for the actions of fools. I know not why anyone would attack someone as exalted as I, nor threaten one so holy as you, but the STC is clearly not safe here. Reason why people would want STC destroyed?

The Imperium's leaders benefit from the war. It keeps them in power, it keeps the populace hating aliens and chaos and whatnot. It's stable. They don't WANT the STC to be used because it'll mean Imperial victory (barring something like Eldar reverting to 2E levels of ass-kicking or Necrons waking up) and that'll mean change - change that might end their comfortable regime.

Essentially, a rip off of Exultant by Stephen Baxter. But a good rip off nonetheless.

OP, if you want to not make the Admech instantly all-powerful, just use the 40k universe to your advantage.

Even with an intact STC on Mars, the Admech will take MILLENIA to distribute the secrets to all the forge worlds in the galaxy.

"Give me something flashy. These people don't seem to have much of an eye for subtlety. Give me a weapon too while you're at it."
*Alright then, I think this should work out fine* she says, with what you could swear was stifled laughter. Moments later, a suit of velvet and leopard print materializes in front of you, along with a similarly gaudy cane. *The suit incorporates a carbon nanoweave mesh and a 9wf personal shield. It should be impervious to any of the weapons we've seen so far, by quite a large margin. The cane is an Immateria focusing unit, like the guns on the ship.* Now she's not even trying to hide her laughter. *Just tell them it's the height of 19th millennium fashion*

Let's go with something black and red.

Ask if we can get the suit in red. These guys seem to like red a lot.

Other than that, roll our eyes at our AI, but let it slide. She deserves a joke after all the trouble she's gone through for us.

You groan. "Really Veronica? Really?" *If I have to pretend to be a dumb terminal you can handle doing a little pimping.* "Fine, we'll go with it, but you'd better give me a hat too" you begrudgingly reply. *Of course* A velvet hat complete with peacock feather joins the ensemble. *The hat incorporates a grav-thruster that will let you move in any direction regardless of local conditions. Now you're a FLYING pimp. Oh, and one more thing.* A pair of green tinted glasses with gold frames appears on top of the hat. *These glasses act as a warp transit beacon. As long as you're within two light years from the ship or any other compatible teleporter they'll let you preform short-range warp jumps. Now go see what their leader wants.*

"One of these days, Veronica, one of these days!"

Put on the entire ensemble, and stride out. We are a walking arsenal, with more firepower and shielding than an entire squadron of their battleships on our person alone. Let's act like it.
