The next morning is suprisingly busy. Your reinforcements finally arrive, and with Wulf and Lena active in the barracks again the sounds of sparring and explosions are more readily audible than it had been in the past. There is more than a little excitement as Janos moves Fluffy and Scaly from the kennels late in the morning, the two aurachnospecs nearly escaping his grasp. As you finish laughing at that particular near fiasco, you notice Blackbird, Collin and Gaius approaching you, a tattered sheet of parchment in hands.

Let's see how their recruitment drive went.

Also, since I imagine we'll be hitting that noble party today we best decide on a proper gift. Since this gov is critical in some of our plans for purchasing temples, we need to make a good impression. I'm still advocating giving him that arcane ice dagger or that cloak we made.

    Fuck yeah!

Anyway, meet with the three captains and see what's up.

    >>14069887
I'm still of the opinion that alarm arcana would be more useful for a governor.
    >> Maximus 02/27/11(Sun)21:54 No.14069957
    >>14069932
I'd argue that's more useful for us in the long-term as opposed to the ice arcana dagger. Using alarm arcana like that would let us cover a lot more ground rather than relying on the scouts on future campaigns. The governor is elected from the noble houses so they do have cavalry wings for war, which likely means this son might lead them at some point and giving him a head start on some nice fighting gear might be a good idea.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 02/27/11(Sun)21:59 No.14070015
    >>14069957
    Alright.
I'd prefer to keep the cloak. I'll go with the ice dagger. Just make sure that we get an appropriately high-quality sheath for it too.

Also, I'd like to check in with our Uurlanthi noble prisoners. Make sure that they're being treated well, their food and water is fresh, they have enough blankets.
A healthy prisoner is worth more ransom than a sick one, after all.
I wish to maintain the image of "Evil, but reasonable" in front of the prisoners. Perhaps ask Lady Blentus if there is anything else she may require; it seems to really irk her husband, and I find it amusing.
    >> Generic 02/27/11(Sun)22:00 No.14070032
    >>14069957

If we want to give him a head start on fighting gear, we should give him actual fighting gear. Not a decorative cloak and a dagger capable of a nifty trick.
    >> Maximus 02/27/11(Sun)22:02 No.14070070
    >>14070032
Well the cloak can not be included if we go that route and I assumed we would give him normal gear as well since we have a damn armoury. A piece of arcana on top of it is just very nice icing on the cake.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 02/27/11(Sun)22:02 No.14070074
You walk over to the trio of captains, greeting them with a crisp salute "How did the recruitment drive go?"

Blackbird chuckles "I enjoyed the arena, though it is unfortunate that the owners did not allow me to partake in the combat."

"He'll be back there ev'ry damn day if'ya let him go." Collin quips, handing you the parchment.

Gaius shakes his head "It will take 200 Dragoons to pay the collective ransoms, fines, and debts of the gladiators and pit fighters that struck us as worth hiring on. The rest of the unit we padded out with rejected legion volunteers. Blackbird will have his work cut out for him with that lot." The parchment in your hand has a long list of names, splotches and lines of ink in several colors blocking out some names, though enough remain to pad out the orcs unit to 75 able bodies.

    Maybe a Kyria forged longsword?
It was a reception was it?
Maybe with some runes that read 'may she always be in your heart.'
    >> GoldPanda 02/27/11(Sun)22:03 No.14070084
We had Collin and Blackbird looking for potential fighters and raiders, right? Gaius was their guide to the city?

I would be okay with giving the governor's son either the ice dagger or the alarm arcana. Jayne said that the governor was a practical man. Useful arcana captured from the enemy would be a good gift.

200 dragoons is pretty reasonable, considering what Blackbird's unit has been capable of.

I say pay it from our requisition funds if we can, from our personal funds if we can't.

Let's pay the necessary amount, from our requisition funds if necessary. Blackbird's unit may see higher attrition this time around, but it'll be acceptable.

Also, have we been able to find more engineers for our personal Engineer Corps?
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 02/27/11(Sun)22:15 No.14070255
You lead the trio to your coffers and take the coin they will need for the hiring "Make it happen" you instruct the trio, who, after saluting once again make to leave the barracks complex, amid a small flurry of backslapping and mirth. No doubt they plan to spend the rest of the day at the arena. As they leave out the front gate, they pass your elementalist hopefuls, almost all of the recruits are moving stiffly, though only a few have the courage to glare at the intimidating trio.

Give a speech to the elementalist hopefuls, emphasizing what they will be going through and what they can be doing with their gifts. Emphasize that Uurlanth has elementalists of their own (should put a fire up their asses) and that they are going to beat them because they will be more dedicated and determined than Urlanth's. Finish off my showing what your earth elementalism can do, and lead them in a session of meditation.

You make your way to the front of the cadre in training. Getting their attention is easy enough, a few lose cobblestones smashing together, re-forming the stones to fit back into their places perfectly. You give a brief speech, and by the end of it the soreness seems to have drained from the muscles of the recruits, and the whole group launches into their days training eagerly.

Later in the day, after the training has been completed and Laelith left with Wulf and Lena for the archives you stop by to check on your prisoners. The nobles seem to be as happy with their conditions as could be expected, and the other soldiers seem to be healthy enough for prisoners. As you leave the dungeon you see Degrian hard at work on the steambow, though to your eye it seems that the runes create too much force for the device to withstand now, as the slides blast out the bottom of the device. The Kaskyanas cursing is aped by Kyria, as she fusses over a replica of the runic security system she made, though judging by the parchment on the table in the room with the dwarf she is making some progress.

    -----CQ-----

The next morning you leave early with Laelith, reaching the old healers hut well before your appointment. "Ah, they are early... come in come in." the old lacertans voice commands from inside the shop. You lead a nervous looking Laelith through the door, which is closed and locked behind you. The room itself has been re-aranged, the center now dominated by a small bed and a table full of pots and censors. The smoke feels different as well, and you can feel your depth perception and sense of smell go as you approach the bed.

You can feel Laeliths legs begin to go to jelly as she nears the table "Justinian?" she asks in a worried and slightly slurred voice.

    >you were ordered to keep advancing the tech, the 2nd didnt want to chance the old guard commanders being stubborn assholes in the middle of the war. You have been ordered to test-bed this technology and have it ready to be spread legion-wide after the war

You squeeze Laeliths hand as you help her onto the bed "Dont worry love, I will be with you the whole time. And this is a healer of the highest caliber, it took me a long while to find her."

The lacertan healer begins swinging more censors, and lighting incenses as well. The colors begin to shift, and you feel a sudden need to sit down, instead of standing at Laeliths side. She begins spreading a series of pastes and balms into Laeliths face "Why cant I move?" the elf asks, fear deeply seated in her voice now.

The healer sighs "Rest easy child, this will not be pleasant." Laelith opens her mouth to protest but the old healer cuts her off "You may outlive me, but I was still at this craft long before you were born."

At that, Laeliths hand goes limp in your grasp, her slowly rising and falling chest, and rapidly shifting and dilating eyes the only reassurance you have of her health. the latter is denied as the old crone pushes the elfs eyes shut, rubbing her balms into the lids. The preparation continues for what seems like hours, until finally, humming a strange tune, she rests her wizened hands on the elfs face. "It burns." you can barely hear Laelith whisper, pain joining her meek voice as strongly as the fear. You squeeze her hand tighter, for lack of a better action to take.
