    40 KB Harlem Quest - Part V Ellington !!UwPj376bY/f 02/16/11(Wed)20:04 No.13928333
    It's 1927.

You're an enforcer called Duke, you're a midlevel guy in one of the three black gangs trying to control the illicit side of things in Harlem, the Outfit, though recently the Dutch and the Jews have been trying to muscle in on the action. You've got two underlings and a whole bunch of people above you.

As well as being a black man, you're a black magician, which just means you've got a certain understanding with the Other Side and don't hesitate to use certain kinds of energy to help yourself and your people, always in that order. Necromancer is a dirty word used by white folks to try to keep down you down and maintain their power base.. Anyone uses the N word around you finds themselves dead and their ghost enslaved.

It's the height of the swinging twenties, money is flowing, deals are being made, position and power are gained and lost every day, and all that life and all that energy means that magic is abundant.

    Welcome to Harlem.

If you're a newcomer I suggest you read them all because a shitload of things have happened and although I'll try to summarise shortly I won't be able to get all the details.

    Skills:
Guns - all guns, rifles, semis etc
Bartering - The bluffing, the negotiating, the double dealing, it all comes naturally to you.
Intimidation (basic) - You can scare civilians if you give them the evil eyes.

    Spells:
Summoning (Level Four) - you can now summon people up to 3 years dead, faster and with less energy than you used to.
Bind (Level Three) - You can bind a ghost or a spirit to your cause for 3 days.
Life Leech (Level Two) - you now have the ability to heal minor wounds. If you're already healthy and use it you get stronger, quite a bit faster and gain some stamina. Your target feels like they've run a marathon unless you decide to only take a little. You still cannot leech from magicians.
Rip (Level One) - essentially ripping out the souls of living people from their bodies by summoning them. Makes them unconscious for about 30 seconds since their souls return to the bodies relatively quickly.
Ghost Whip (Level One) - you can now cause untold amounts of agony to the newly dead, up to three days. As you get more practice at this you can cause more damage to older ghosts.

More like NEGROmancer, right? Ha ha!

Did they have heroin back in 1927? Because if they did we should totally get the drop on that Lucas guy fifty years ahead of the game.

One thing I think may have been overlooked. We burnt down our speakeasy. Before we go to sleep for the day, we should start by getting the lot cleaned up. I doubt we have the money to start rebuilding right now, but we can at least take responsibility, show Olukwele our heads not up our ass - hire locals to help out the community, etc.

    Items of Note:
Magic Knuckleduster, with ONE charge left in it. Each charge that connects is a killing blow. The kid was quite clearly an amateur so he could only throw the energy a few inches forward of the knuckleduster. You're experienced so when you use it you can punch from several feet away and the knuckleduster's energy will take a man down, permanently. You noticed the two times you've used it so far that it wanted to be used.
Happy Magic Juice - a high quality concoction that mystics use to power their astral wanderings: some laudanum, a some rare chinese opium, and a dash of Ghost. You've got enough in the bottle to get a mind and soul high and keep it there for a whole weekend.
Medium Physical Protection Amulet - This can take killing blows and spread out the attack evenly on the shield so you don't get broken bones or incapacitated. It can only take 3 killing blows before having to be recharged.
Medium Astral Protection bracelet - This will protect you from attacks on the astral plane, whether you're a sleep or you're awake although it does require a ritual in the mornings to activate it for the rest of the day.
Distraction Charm - This will allow you to walk through white neighbourhoods without having the police called on you or get undue attention. You're part of the background but if you do something out of the ordinary you will get noticed.

    General:
    - 1 Browning Automatic Rifle.
    - 2 Tommy Guns with straight mags.
    - Silver bullets for the colt revolvers and 1 mags worth for a Tommy Gun.
    - 2 M1917 Colt Revolver's
    - 2 knives.
    - 500 dollars.
    - 1 apartment.
    - 1 office + sanctum.
    - 1 car

    Knowledge:
    - Demon Etiquette and some basic understanding of their realms.
    - Chess (GOOD)

Money generation: 350 dollars per night.

    Your underlings are as follows:

    - Randy, an innocent sounding name for a dangerously cynical 16 year old kid. Loyal beyond death, really, because you helped him kill the judge that sentenced his father to death. You've taught him a bit of magical theory but he's not your kind, so for now he's a low level elemantal magician until he gets some real training. But boy can he set fire to shit. Special Items: 1 Elemntal Booster stone. 1 Basic Physical Protection Amulet. (BONUS: Pyromaniac.)
    - Big Jim, a muscular behemoth with no magic whatsoever. He resents the fact that he is the same age as you and yet you give the orders. Nevertheless he obeys because you've got the juice and he don't. He ain't all that smart but he's good in a scrap. Special Items: 1 Medium Strenght Amplifier necklace.
    - Chandler Raymonds. A punk kid you killed that has agreed to work for you for a time as a ghost, to spy on your enemies for you on the understanding that you keep his brothers safe if he finds out they're in danger. Because he's a free ghost who you haven't bound he can show initiative and do things on his own away from you and for extended periods of time without having to constantly rebind and set the parameters of his mission to him. He's agreed to work with you on a long term basis now.
    - O'Leary, a cop you killed. You've got him Bound for 3 more days at which point he turns into a free ghost.
    - Patrick, the brother of O'Leary who you killed when he was trying to avenge his brother's death. You've got him Bound for 3 more days.
    - The Three Amigos, three nameless henchmen who've been with you through thick and thin. (BONUS: Loyalty Level Two).

    DISADVANTAGES:
DEATH LEECH - if you're mortally wounded and you get knocked out you will drain until death whoever is standing closest to you in order to recover and wake up. This disadvantage will stay with you until you gain better control of leech life (i.e. Level Four).

    Summary:
You're in the financial district. You've just had a conversation with Lenny Brokowitz about Lord Pitt's right hand man, a german werewolf called Erik von Henderschmidt, Henders for short. You've got the address of a nightclub he works from and his home address. Brokowitz has also informed you that Lord Pitt has protected the Wessler building somehow from ghostly attacks, and that should you find some way to disable that protection him and some ghost pals of his with a bone to pick with Pitt will help you attack his building.

Meanwhile, time is running out for you to deal with Pitt because he's done a test run with the crystals against the Gambino family in Little Italy. And though people don't realise what happened, you do, and you know that the only thing that remains in the way between Pitt and total control of New York is you.

I'll start in about 15 minutes to give people a chance to show up, and for myself to make a sandwich!

While drug dealing may eventually be a profitable enterprise, I feel like it wasn't really a thing in the 20's. Besides, we've got other contraband to worry about: liquor. Not to mention a ton of other things on our plate. We can work on implementing new racquets once we take care of the current issues and work our way up.

Or at the very least, convince him to give us a discount for the knowledge on how silver bullets are bullshit.

Unless he already knew, and is just making us pay for bullshit.

See, that's why I wanted to go for incendiary rounds last time. Can't be too hard to get some incendiary .30-06 for the BAR or something.

Or perhaps we can put little magical tracers on the bullets, and let Randy turn them into incendiary rounds mid flight?

For those that don't remember/weren't here: My suggestion is we ambush Henderschmidt while he's out on a Crystal Op. Then we don't have to assault the Wessler to get the Crystal, and take out Pitt's right hand man. We might even want to warn whoever hes moving against so they can help us.
I don't really see Pitt as the big deal, we are only interested in him because of the crystal, by taking it while its out, we get to avoid his fortress defense and then the pressure is on him. He cast to send out some second stringer, or make a move himself, revealing himself to ghost assault, which he hasn't done 5 years according to Lenny.

Henders is the first target. Then we can summon his ghost and see what he knows about the magical protection on the Wessler building. Take that down, and our ghost army can solve our problem for us.

Thoughts on whether we should go for the Home or the Nightclub? I feel like his home he'll be more off his guard, but it's also more likely to have his personal defenses and surprises. Then again, the Nightclub may have security of some sort that we'll have to deal with.

I want to propose the idea of setting up an ambush for him somewhere between the two. We have Chandler who can tail him, while we take our time to pick our location and get the drop on him when he's least expecting it.

In the 1920s , there were alot of immigrants coming from other countries to start a new lifei n america.

There's a certain white boy you know with a taste for dark meat.

A few years ago, one of your underlings caught him going too far with one of the girls the Outfit was pimping out and you've had your hooks into him ever since.

He's come slightly up in the world since, some kind of middle manager in the City's offices. Tim Bradbury-James is the quintessential WASP. Tall, blond, and cheekbones that demand you follow them into battle.

You meet him in a little room inside a municipal building, and despite the ongoing storm and the dark shadows cast by the skyscrapers around you, it's still day and people are likely to be working inside.

Tim says, "Mr. Duke. I can show you the offices where architects have to register the blueprints of a certain type of building but I don't know how you intend to get them. They've got some special filing system and you'd need to get one of the people who work there to help you find the plans. How do you want to go about this?" His voice quivers, knowing he's in danger of losing his job and his social status if he's caught being seen with you.

Here's how I view our tech tree:

We need to train Life Leech up, until we learn how to Put life into things.
Then we need to learn to Transfer Life from one thing to another.

We need to learn Binding until we can rip souls out of one body, and then put them into another.

We need to find a source that can teach us how to craft Flesh Golems - essentially, animating corpses.

With this, we animate a corpse, transfer life into it, and then shove a soul into it - allowing for Resurrection.

    --

Also, we need to see if we can spend some time in a Ghost form ourselves. Not leaving our body entirely, but seeing if we can affect the world as a ghost.

If we can manage to transfer OURSELVES into a body, after we're turned into a ghost, we've effectively gained eternal life.

But that's far in the future. For now ... we deal with the matter of the crystals.

Idea unrelated to the task at hand: Have we thought about telling the Italians what the skinny is about the crystals, and getting them to team up with us on Pitt? We could maybe con our way into using most of their muscle, and after Pitt and the Italians are weakened, we could make a play on both fiefs?

Also, about the silver bullets. If they were so readily available for purchase, they must serve some function. We might want to look into what that is before we sell them.

With a mixture of threat and promises you send Tim Bradbury-James away and he's just as afraid of you as he ever was, and more than a little titillated by the promises of women you've made him. He's already planning all the things he's going to do to them.

    What now?

You step into an elevator and a young black man in a red uniform takes you up to the 12th floor. He looks at you out of the sides of his eyes, as if something is out of place and he can't quite figure out what, but then he mentally shrugs to himself and tips his hat to you as you step off into a hallway. It seems the distraction charm is working just fine.

You follow sings that lead you to the City Planning department. Maybe it's because things are nearing the end of the day but as you step in you see only one middle aged man, almost exactly as Bradbury-James described the type, sitting at a desk writing notes on some sort of sheets. His dark hair is peppered with grey, and all his attention is focused on the sheets he's writing on.

He hasn't noticed you've entered the office.

    Make your move.

And as for staying low, we are using some charms to remain discrete. And if we need to come off as threatening, we could use someone like Jim with us.

But for now, I agree in that he should go alone. The other two shouldn't stay here though, they should just stay out of the office.

"Nothing at all like some of the skyscrapers we have planned at the moment. You'll see none of that ugly blocky tower design, in our plans, we've got some real beauties on the way. Bauhaus mixed with the most tasteful art deco you can imagine. I tell you, friend, we'll have the most stunning skyline in the world. "As for the Wessler building. I can only pray one day it will be demolished and replaced with something else. No offense to your own work, naturally."

He looks through several different drawers before coming out with the rolled up plans.

While we're looking at the designs, look for anything we recognize as being a magical ward. Seeing as we work exclusively in necromantic magic and summoning, that doesn't give us much, but if we see any rooms that are specifically spherical, that could give us a hint. Perhaps the entire room has a massive ward covering the floor.

Just look at the basement and the foundations. There's a large exit into Frelling street for absolutely no reason that I can see, wide enough that you could drive two trucks through it."

"And then there's the arrangement of the floors. Look at this huge space between the 18th and 19th floors. You could probably fit two floors into that and it's not being used at all, according to what I've read. It's not like there's a power source being stored there or there's building maintenance shafts passing through."

"And you know what's most peculiar? Me and Jeff who works here went down there one weekend just to check it out, and the foundations are actually shaped like a star. If you walk around the room, it's this ugly cavernous space, the walls follow the shape of a five sided star."

You actually do know that Lord Pitt deals in astral magic and elemental magic.

Astral magicians can travel through the astral plane, that's a plane parallel to the one that ghosts are one, through which they can affect the real world and gain foresight about the future. Powerful astral magicians can take on certain shapes and forms which will give them a boost when trying to affect the real world. An astral magician could probably destroy a ghost but since it's a being on a parallel plane and not the same one, it would take lots of effort and could not be done en masse.

You take off at high speed but you're frustrated by the traffic in your way. It's early evening now and it seems everyone who has a car in New York has decided to take this moment to drive home from work.

Big Jim gets his Tommy Gun ready. Randy gets his Tommy gun ready as well, while mentally preparing any fire magic he has to cast.

You get your BAR out of the car and like the badass you are. You've parked the car a few buildings down and are running quietly and quickly to the building you need to go to. You didn't want the noise of the car to give warning to Henders.

When you approach the building you see that it's a first floor apartment.

Chandler goes inside to check, comes back out and says they're both still fucking.

There's a straight line between where you're standing, and the room at the back where the fucking is happening.

You give Big Jim the nod he's been looking for for days. He says "Finally, I get something to do."

You see him turn the amulet you bought him in a certain direction, and it clicks into place. With that you see Big Jim's muscles get tense, even though he hasn't gotten larger he seems to fill up the space he's in completely. He's more -there- than he's ever been. He charges forward like a rhino and breaks down the front door with just his shoulder.

He continues to run in ahead of you and as you run behind him you can see him break down another door and open fire inside.

You hear the wail of a woman but before you can even get to the same doorway so you can cast Rip on Henders, Henders with his freakish speed has attacked Big Jim. In the time it takes you to take two steps into the apartment you see a naked man with the huge claws of a wolf bat aside Big Jim like he's a child. You see Big Jim's throat bleeding heavily as he flies through the air, through a brick wall and into another room.

You have one move to make.

You can tell he's about to lunge at you when you finally, instinctively, pull his soul from his body. His body loses consciousness instantly and tumbles in front of like an out of control clown.

You see the spirit of Henders looking confused for a second, trying to choke you and stab you with his claws but it does nothing and just passes through like cigarette smoking breaking up when something solid passes through it.

However Henders is already being pulled back to his body. You have 2 movse to kill him somehow before he's up and at you again.

Meanwhile Big Jim is in the room next door bleeding to death. You have 3 moves to save his life.

Randy sets fire to the werewolf's body while shooting into it.

You meanwhile begin to leech the life from the werewolf's body and send it to Big Jim. You can't tell what effect that has had on Jim yet.

In front of you though you see the werewolf's body constantly healing the gunshot wounds, continuously. Every gunshot wound closes up almost instantly with new flesh. The fire seems to be working though. Randy keeps piling on the heat and the body just can't deal with that.

Randy has finished incinerating the werewolf. He's smiling because he knows just how valuable he was to you. He saw how little affect the bullet wounds were having and gains the satisfaction from a job well done. Henders is officially dead.

You can find hairs to summon on the pillow in his bedroom or in his bathtub. Werewolves are hairy fucks that drop hair all over the place.

You take a few steps forward and see two things. To your right is Big Jim, still bleeding to death. The energy you sent him slowed down the flow of blood but he's still leaking hard, while in front of you is the room that Big Jim fired into.

In it is the woman that Chandler described as Evelina. She's naked and lying on her back with all sorts of wounds all over her chest and face. Jim sure did a number on her. There's a massive Sun tattoo going round the bottom of her stomach, the top of her thighs and centered around her vagina. Despite the disgusting state of her mashed up torso, somehow your loins are stirring and you want to tap that.

Her grotesque, blood covered, skullcracked, head turns to look at you. It says "Fuck. Me. Fuck. Me." in a ghastly whisper. You take a step towards her without knowing why. Are you seriously going to fuck that? What's wrong with you?

You try to leech from her to send to Jim and it doesn't work. She's a magician and despite how close she is to death her natural barriers are still up and you can't drain her energy.

Meanwhile you've taken another step towards her.

    >>13930566
The O'Leary's jump to your command try to attack her but it does very little. They're still too new at being ghosts.

Her vagina continues to call to you as you take another step forward.

It doesn't matter however because Randy heard the call you made to the O'Learys and jumps in front of you, setting fire to her before she can begin using here succubus-lite powers at him.

Before you know it your favourite little pyromaniac has set fire to another of your enemies. When she's dead and the fire continues to rage on the bed, he coughs briefly and then inhales all the flames in one go.

    Randy looks drunk now.

Big Jim continues to bleed out you have 2 moves to save him because the blood is starting to spurt out quickly again.

You hold back the bleeding with the cloth and close your eyes as you begin sending Jim your own life force.

You can feel it working, knitting the skin around his throat back together, putting the displaced spinal column back into place.

Big Jim will live. But he's very weak from the loss of all that blood and on the borderline. You've done what you can for him but it will take several weeks for his own body to recover from the trauma it went through.

You're also very weak. You feel like you've run two marathons while struggling with the flu. It takes all the energy you have not to just collapse on top of Jim.

You slowly step back and sit down. You're exhausted and have trouble moving your own neck.

Randy and the ghosts have dragged in Henders' neighbours, about 6 of them. Several men and some women. They look at the carnage that's happened in the apartment, and at the scary black men with the scary weaponry and decide that following orders is the smart thing to do.

You look them over and you can't even tell what they look like. All you see is their inner energy and....you're hungry.

You feast. You're back up to 100%. The neighbours aren't nearly as strong as you though so they all fall unconscious, one of the men banging his head against a table, neck broken and now dead.

    What now?

I'm sure we could have gotten some info out of the girl too, but you win some you lose some. Glad that Henders is dead.

Grab a werewolf hair, and blond hair if any are available, search the house for valuables, then have Randy wear Jim's strength amulet so he can help you carry him to the car. Then I vote we head back to Harlem to drop Jim off, and if we need to get to Wessler today then pick up the Amigos while we're there, one of them gets Jim's BPPA while he's out of action, the strength booster could go to one as well, I suppose, since Duke and Randy probably won't be mixing it up in melee.

    >You know, I think it would have gone quite a bit better if Randy just cauterized Jim's wounds with fire. That is possible, right?

Yep, but the werewolf's blow also did some serious damage to Jim's spine and that injury probably would have set and crippled him for life if you didn't give it that boost immediately. No amount of boosting would've been enough to put it back into place if you'd just stopped the bleeding alone.

You get up and with the help of Randy ransack the house. You find some stashes of money hidden in the walls and under the floorboards (GAINED: 5000 dollars), but nothing magical and no notes or any work to give you a hint where the crystals are, and certainly not the crystals themselves. You grab the werewolf hairs, which you're happy to see there are many of, and a few strands of longer blonde hair which is clearly from a woman. A few decent additions to your grimoire.

Randy puts on the strength amulet and single handedly carries Jim to the car, very carefully.

You drive back to Harlem and drop off Jim at Doc Green's. You then pick up the Three Amigo's, give their nominal leader the BPPA and the strength amulet, and then sit down together for a planning session in the car.

You've got a few hours before Pitt begins to suspect that something has happened to Henders, at which point he'll panic and do the ritual alone because he suspects someone is out to stop him.

You've also gained the ability to bind a ghost to items in a manner of ways. You can bind a ghost to a container, in order to imprison them, or you can bind a ghost to an item like a knife, dagger, amulet or what have you in order for the item to gain magical characteristics. For example, binding the spirit of a war veteran to a rifle will give you a sentient, bloody minded rifle with an offensive bonus that speaks to you and wants to attack all Germans on sight. And so on and so forth

Whilst we wait for Ellington to return, I thought i might as well throw out some Idea for our new mastery of Bind.

Things I have thought of/Agree with.

Knuckle Dusters - Henderschmidt seems like a fairly good choice for this when you think about it. I am assuming that a Spirit bound into an attack object will not give any defensive bonus's and while we may lose his fearsome regeneration capabilities, we would gain a fraction of his superhuman speed and strength, as well as having his bad Ass accent to keep us company, making these "Wolf Claws" come in very handy.

    Drawback: None that I see

Amulet - Henderschmidt (Again) On the flip side, it seemed that this Werewolf bastard was practically indestructible to bullets, and whilst binding him into an amulet would probably not give us anywhere near this amount of regen, it would certainly come in handy,. plus it negates some of the ill aspects of the Death leach perk. One could also assume that binding him into an amulet or ring could give the Duke a flat speed bonus while running or just plain walking.

Drawback: Possible added aggression from our new formerly furred jewelry accessory.

My point was that, if we let Pitt succeed, then recover the crystal, no one else would have any booze, while we would have a crystal capable of turning water into wine. We would be the only ones capable of supplying demand until new shipments came in. It destroys our current stock, but destroys many times as much enemy stock.

Colt 1911 - Patrick O'Leary think about it, Dukes already formidable gun slinging skills combined with the supernatural and Enhanced luck of the Irish. Perfect for giving us an extra edge over those magic barriers and general hard to accomplish feats of gunmanship.

Amulet/Ring ect... - Patrick O'Leary (Again) Once more however, I find that the soul of old paddy boy here may actually be of more use to us In a defensive rather than offensive role. Having bullets miracously only graze us instead of hitting a lung, Knowing to suddenly step aside to dodge the car that just screeched out of no-where. Watching the fear in your enemies eyes as the knife aimed for your hear becomes hopelessly entangled in the fabric of your suit. Once again, a particularly tasty perk.

That's all i had prepared, but I do have a few more good (at least in my mind) ideas forming.

These are some great ideas. The Wolf Claws duster is just too good to pass up, but having a Lucky Amulet is something that gets my wholehearted support.

I'm going to bump again, even though I know it's futile.
