A good map can lend a lot of authenticity to a setting. Here's one I've been gradually churning out.

Constructive criticism, OP: Your map seems a bit bland. Try having large and small patches of mountains rather than FOREST HERE, MOUNTAINS HERE. THESE ARE ALL THE MOUNTAINS, THESE ARE ALL THE TREES.

your arctic reaches landmass makes the map seem to cover a LOT more land area than the countries in the center would imply. that could either be an polynesia excerpt or Kevin Costner's Waterworld.

It's actually showing a region in the campaign, not the whole world. Due to the relatively close grouping of the continents here, people in this general area of the world have had contact with each other for quite some time. Not much is known about the world outside of the mapped region, though rumors persist that there are lands way, way out there.

As for the Reaches, it's actually a landmass of its own accord, and doesn't start getting frost-covered year round until well off the map. The climate of what you can see on the map is probably akin to Maine or Washington state, if you're an Americafag like I am.

I had to go for a more expansive map for this campaign, because I made the mistake of allowing the players to get an airship. Silly, silly me.

    Geographical features, or cities?

If it's cities and civilization names, I try and sound things out. Try and use names in the same phonetic set, give each nation its own phonetic feel. Like how "Paris" sounds different from "Moscow." Names like "Five Pillars" and those in the far east of the map sound so plain because their nation's phonetic set is so far removed from the norm that a literal translation was easier for the mapmakers.

As for individual names, I just thought of what people from certain areas would call things. The Abali Mountains in Rahmala, for example, are named after the in-game nation of Abal, that was swallowed up centuries back by the Rahmalans.

When all else fails, I borrow a real life nation's phonetic set, like with all the names in the nation of Jomun. When I do that, it also gives my players a better feel for what kind of culture (Arabic merchants/traders, sands, etc) to expect from the region at a glance. Though, if I do it too much, it cheapens the whole exercise of making my own world, so it's a tradeoff.

We take requests from any D&D books. We're only doing monsters/races now, but in the future we may start doing other D&D related images.

Getting good at drawing is something that anyone can learn, but it's one of those things that needs persistance and a lot of just plain recreational drawing. A good way to learn how to draw is to copy photographs of people/animals/places.

    The knight. Definitely the knight.

    >>13903313

It's sort of generic I'm afraid, but I'll give it a shot.

In the very beginning there was but one being, a nameless entity who would later come to be called the Creator. The Creator gave form to the Six Elder Gods, beings of great power that worked with the Creator to form the multiverse and all life. Unfortunately, the creation of all of this life awakened an ancient and powerful being: Thanatos (the god of Death).

Centuries passed and more gods were born and died. Worlds were created and destroyed, but one planet (the main one, Vastitas) endured and drew the attention of the gods. Three nations were rapidly growing: Acidalia in the West, the Achvarl Kingdoms in the central continent, and the Empire of the Risen Sun in the East. Other nations of non-humans also began to form, such as the dwarven kingdoms south of the Achvarls, the elves on the isle of Isidis, and the garudian (mortal avoral with a knack for knowledge, order, and lore) on a small island north of the Achvarls.

In Acidalia the humans were skilled masters of magic and technology, but their skill gave birth to hubris, which ultimately led to the downfall of the continent-covering nation. In the Achvarl Kingdoms a young prince denied the existence of the gods and took a pilgrimage to the Kingdoms' tallest mountain and lived there for years as a hermit to meditate and try to find meaning in life. The Empire of the Risen Sun spent much of its time combating the demons and other monsters of the Shadowed Lands, a wasteland of fell magic that grew with each passing year.

The king of the gods is Mishnikai, the god of the sun (Sunlight being an important motif in most cultures, so I considered it fitting). He and his wife (a moon goddess) had two sons: Lothcar and Snyzen. The former is the god of war and the favored son of his parents, and the second was born as a sort of "living sacrifice." Snyzen became a vessel for all of the chaos and evil in the world (I'm not implying that chaos is evil, in fact I prefer the alignment to lawful, although I'm more of a N, NG kind of guy). Unfortunately the powers of evil and chaos corrupted Snyzen and he attempted to bring down the other gods and rule the Pantheon and the multiverse as the sole deity. His attempts ultimately failed, but they resulted in the deaths of hundreds of gods, thousands of worlds, and millions of mortals. In the end Snyzen was trapped in the Abyss, an ever changing plane of chaos.

Some side effects of the Godfell (the event that Snyzen started) was the creation of the drow race when the former goddess of magic betrayed her sister goddess. Her followers were cursed and marked by the nature goddess and became what are now known as drow. During the beginning of the Godfell a mortal was promoted to godhood when his patron deity was killed, and he eventually fused his essence with Thanatos, but wiped the event from the memories of every being, mortal and immortal (except the god of knowledge, who knows everything).

Pic related, it's the image I use for Snyzen. Continued below...

The Achvarl prince from the first post achieved godhood and started a religion that proclaimed that he was the only true god and that the others were false idols and powerful outsiders. This causes tension between the followers of Mithras (the monotheistic god) and the worshipers of the other gods, and both sides are capable of drawing on the powers of their gods, which further confuses many mortals (and as the world builder I haven't decided which side is right and which side is wrong).

On Vastitas, only the continent of Elysium was left relatively untouched. Elysium is the main area that my players can explore (and therefore the setting name is named after it). The Achvarl Kingdoms fell and only two cities truly survived. The Acidalians fell and the survivors split into two factions. One faction fled below ground and eventually evolved into the deepling race (which I posted here a few months ago) while the other colonized the western reaches of Elysium and began rebuilding their empire (they're very Greco-Roman). They encountered resistance from the native humans and leonin, but within a century everything north of the Achvarl Desert was under their rule. Unfortunately it didn't last long, as the Kingdoms of Granson and Rumidon united and rebelled.

During this, the high elves and drow from Isidis were forced to leave their island, which had been mostly destroyed by necromancy and plagues. The elves settled in Surinya Tum and encountered the native wood elves. The drow fled to the mountain caverns, swamps, and darker forests of Elysium.

The Empire of the Risen Sun was reduced to the small outcrop on the western part of the map. As the years passed the nations eventually evolved into what they are presently in the Ninth Age of Elysium. Forces from Asphos Dale attempted to conquer Elysium twice, but they were defeated both times. Over time Orwin and the Kingdom of Arc separated from Selaria, and Rumidon and Granson became two nations again.

The races I allow without question are: Humans, Dwarves, and Aasimar (without edit), Tieflings, Half-Elves, Half-Drow, Drow (with minor editing for balance), Tortles, Orcs, High Elves, Wood Elves, Genasi, and Minotaurs (with fairly significant alterations). New races I made were Deeplings (magically inclined humanoids), leonin (from MtG, but more like actual lions than the advanced humanoid race they are presented as), garudian (the avian owl-people), and Shades (which are so different as to constitute their own race, they don't possess all of the same gimicky powers and are also naturally psionic).

That's the setting in a nutshell. I think I have it uploaded to an internet storage site and could drop the link if anyone's interested. I'm sort of concerned about the theft of intellectual property since I'm writing a novel in the setting (a lofty goal I know), but I might post it anyway if enough interest is shown.

Thanks. It took influence from a lot of different things I've read. Snyzen and Lothcar are Cain and Abel, a more detailed history has some heavy LoTR elements (plus I reduced the elves from half a dozen to Tolkien's High and Wood elves), and there's some Forgotten Realms and Eberron influence too.

It's also sort of unique in that most of the world has been explored and is well known, so adventurers are necessarily blazing new trails, but instead traveling across lands that are supposed to be "tame."

I've got three projects on my plate, few of which I've done reasonable work on since beginning employment.

    1. Homebrew, pretty heavy, new RPG system. Wuxia style combat where characters can either specialise in a single fictional martial art, or generalise and be decent at many. Each martial art stretches from 1 (learner) to 3 (advanced, maximum for 'generalists') to 5 (absolute master, only capable through specialisation) and has its own strengths and weaknesses. These weaknesses are defined in special abilities, and ratings between low and high in the following areas: Attack, Defense, Damage, Mobility and Maximum Enemies.

    2. Novel I'm writing. Comic fantasy about a fantasy world advanced 500 years so it's solidly in the middle of the age of sail and piracy.

    3. The last one I have done some work on. /tg/s own B-movie horror RPG. I'm going away for work this weekend so I'll probably get a chance to tighten up the areas of weakness a recent game showed me.

    Looking at OP's map...

Is that a road running down the western edge of the mountains? If so, it should probably not be in the same color as the coastlines. And why does it run all the way to the eastern sea with no city at the end? Roads need to go somewhere.

A line of mountains is perfectly acceptable, and many of those swirly mountains you see on some maps are really tough to do in nature.

Example required a black hole strike...

Photoshop's more object oriented sibling Illustrator is closer to what the professionals use, but its learning curve is a bit steeper, too.

Any painting program will work, but may have some influence on the nature of the map.

For cities I prefer hand-drawing on paper.

I already have an extensive Home-Brew, started on hex paper years ago, moved to freehand drawn later, and existing in some scanned and altered form now. Never finished, mind you, but mostly because it's all in my head and only needs to be on paper in small pieces.

For fresh starts I use the US Government and Mother Nature, cleaned up in Paint or similar. Pic related.

I'm surprised this thread lasted through the night. So far I've only DM'd one session, but so far they all seem to like it well enough. They've all read bits and pieces of the lore and they like that I included some stuff that they've come up with over the years (some of the gods' names were created by one friend several years ago, two other gods are actually my first ever character and the character my best friend usually plays), and a few other odds and ends sprinkled in.

So far they've just read what's pertinent to their characters, which is all I really ask. The world will unfold around them as they play.

Still working on the /tg/ side project Outsider: the Calling from time to time.

Making a custom M:tG set with a lovecraftian theme for shits and giggles.

Planning out a draw quest thread in the vein of Ruby Quest but still story-boarding and making character and concept art and room and puzzle design.

And other assorted side projects. I should really work on my next WoD quest for my group this week but I'll probably just improvise. One day I'll actually sit down and paint my Tyranids. After I clean the dust off of them...

Working on the (seemingly abandoned) /tg/ To Aru RPG, in the hope my friends will enjoy it at Easter.

The war against canonical imbalances (someone who can copy other people's powers, Accelerator, etc.) and previously created imbalances (Psychometry vs. TIME MANIPULATION, Light vs. Electromagnetic Wave Control, etc.) should end in victory fairly soon.

My project is a Cyberpunk:2013 game based heavily upon the characters of Disney's animated children's show Handy Manny.

I've got some basic information down for the pre-generated player characters (each based on one of Manny's talking hand tools), and major NPCs, but haven't touched it in months.
