What would the religion and culture of a bat based race be like?

Would they see the Sun as dangerous? Would emphasis be put upon song and sound?
    >> Anonymous 02/10/11(Thu)16:05 No.13853359
Hunting would be important. Culture would be, based off the few bat colonies I know of, be very socialistic. Which doesn't necessarily imply they'd be religious... could be all bat versions of humanists if they developed along socialistic lines.

This. Several species of bat actually share all the food caught in a given night of hunting among the entire colony.

Also, bat-people would possibly not have the same idea of privacy as other races. In fact, a bat-person might feel extremely uncomfortable sleeping in a room with no one else present.

inb4 /tg/ turns this into fetish fuel. I mean actually sleeping.

I don't know about the sun being dangerous perse... It seems to me it would be regarded more as an annoyance that only shows up on a regular basis and only outside making it easily avoided.

Perhaps a particularly xenophobic group would think it warps the mind and body and the surface dwellers are all completely insane and possibly evil because of it.

There is a superstition that bat-folk ward off vampires. It is considered a very good sign if a colony takes up residence nearby.

This is somewhat true. Bat-folk have an almost instinctive hatred for undead and will attempt to destroy any who enter their territory.

They have a preference for the color white for their craftsmanships.

It's considered a color for their hightest ranked warriors and chieftains or their most beautiful maidens.

Other than that, they have little interest in most of other colors (specially dark tones) , often having a strange color sense ( i.e. for matching clothes).

I see bat-humanoids depicted two different ways - the "demon" style, where, like demons, the wings are back-mounted and separate from the arms, and the "mutant" style, where the arms and wings are a single limb, and the fingers form the wing-struts (usually with thumb and one or two fingers left free to grasp objects).

How do you usually prefer them, and would bat-folk have some sort of prejudice/racism/etc. towards those not of their own "style"?

Pic related - mutant-style, my preferred look.

Artwise they'd be very big on sculpture and architecture. If they're primarily interacting with the world via sound, then shaping the way sound interacts with objects would be one of the big ways they express themselves. Strange, colorless alien frescoes and mosaics where the surface is shaped to absorb sound here, redirect it there, retexture it as it reflects, etc. Entire three dimensional structures made out of various materials so that any sound inside of it is transformed before it returns to the listener.

You are now aware that most bats have perfectly normal vision (well as far as most animals go anyway). It's just that vision isn't as important for them as it is for everything else.

You are also aware that bat buildings would be designed with textures and shapes that promote acoustics foremost. It might look like a wierd alien structure on the outside, but it has the most awesome echo ever on the inside.

Humans fear the night. Our senses are weakened and leave us vulnerable. Darkness is culturally seen as bad and evil; several monsters and demons are said to be active at night. This could be attributed simply to the fact nocturnal predators have an advantage against us at night. The moon itself has been attributed to madness, hence the origin of the words lunar/lunacy. We are simply not built to deal with the night. There is little reason for us to fear it as much as we do, but being sapient creatures, we over-complicate every issue we encounter. No reason sapient bats wouldn't do the same. though if they did hate the sun, they would have to resolve it's role as life-giver as well, which is something that holds true regardless of your sleep cycle.

The same way we reconciled the fact that the moon causes tides and is the cycle of a woman's period. Mysticism. The moon is often called a mother, but because of the badness we associate with it, it gets twisted slightly. We make it either a benevolent mother or a twisted witch.

As with any race that can fly, their buildings would be designed to accommodate flight, with walkways added in to facilitate visitors and the injured or crippled where necessary. But such walkways would be off in a corner somewhere because they sound horribly flat.

The best entrances will be above ground level, city planning would try and keep wind-speeds down to lower levels (to prevent accidents). Rooms would be three or four times larger than that of a normal humanoid of their size. Giving them a chance to stretch their wings even when inside

Their sanitation would be greatly important, not only would the shit pile high if left unchekced, but mages all over the place would be storming their cities for fireball fuel. They would probably have some kind of sanitation service to collect and distribute (if they needed cash and were cool with it)

But the strangest thing would be the upsidedown lounging resting and entertainment areas.

Cities would be inside hallowed out mountains and huge sprawling cave complexes. Fruit bats would have giant tree cities which focus on the fruits. Vampire bats would be small and semi terrestrial, since blood is very inefficent they probably would focus on cattle or other large herd animals that have lots of blood.

I wouldn't as small as a turkey, but anything that still flies seems to lend itself more to an 'agile' mental image than a 'hulking' one.

Plus even with reasonably small bodies when you take wingspan into account they're still taking up a good amount of space. Something with a human-sized body would end up taking a huge amount of room once you take the wings into account.

Fantasy things with undersized wings always look goofy as crap.

Small bat children would probably be afraid of the sunlight, just as human children are naturally afraid of the dark as an evolutionary reflex against predators.
Then again, it might be less pervasive, as darkness has a correlation with the unknown that adds to that fear. But then, would that mean bat people would be afraid of quiet, open spaces where sound doesn't reflect back well?

What would their weapons be like? I imagine it'd be heavy on the fist/claw attacks...but anything held?
Assuming they have the "mutant" type of arms, which I prefer, accurate swordplay would be difficult due to your reach and grace being restricted. So they probably favor spellcasting, ranged attacks, or big choppy things like axes that require only a great big swing, no grace necessary.
(Proposed) Favored Classes: Sorcerers, Barbarian, Ranger, Monk.
I think Monk especially because of their inherent social, sharing psychology, remote settlements, and the whole fist weapon thing. I imagine a colony of batfolk living deep in some mountain cavern, meditating upside-down, crafting sonic art, and practicing mid-air martial arts.
So, basically, kung-fu movie shaolin monks, ridiculous leaping, spinning combat included.

    >> Anonymous 02/10/11(Thu)20:39 No.13856204

No. I'd say that if these bat-folk require blood, which isn't the best idea, they'd get it off animals. Vampires are unique in desiring the blood of sentient creatures, batfolk see it as strange and disrespectful to their neighbors outside. Plus, we discussed earlier how they hate undead and what's associated with them.
    >> Anonymous 02/10/11(Thu)20:42 No.13856240
    >>13856204
here's an idea. Vampires, vampire bats, and batfolk are NOT related - the vampire bats are like real-life ones, in that they just get the name because they, like vampires, feed on blood.

Someone said earlier that batfolk have an innate hatred/revulsion of undead, so having a colony of them nearby could be a sort of deterrent to vampires - I like that idea.

he gets his undead ass kicked. for some reason, I picture batfolk as being somehow immune to vampirism. Not all forms of becoming undead, like raising into a zombie or skeleton, or becoming a ghoul or whatever, but just vampirism. Dunno why or how, but it just seems appropriate.

Then you get a vampire batfolk.

I think vampire bats are just monsters, as there's a different between bats and batfolk just as there is with any other anthropomorphic race and their bestial counterparts. Vampire bats are just particular nasties who feed off blood, amped up in size and power. Though batfolk (Can we think of another name for them) respect the bat, the v-b is a constant annoyance. Waking up to find a gigantic beast hanging off your neck is annoying as hell...

Make the vampire bats the ogres to the batfolk's humans.

Huge, strong, cannot fly but can jump (as someone earlier mentioned) and maybe able to supplement their blood-feeding with meat. Or maybe they are few in number and prey on cattle herds/big things.

Culture wise I am imagining big bloodsucking paladins are common, if only for the 'awesome' factor. Only these less intelligent batfolk are willing to worship Pelor, mainly for the 'hates the undead' bit.

The group finds this ... bat person, who, even if the group doesnt like him, he's so servicial and helpful and desperate for company (pic related) the group cant help but think of him as a loves companion, there's a very angry vampire hunter. The hunter thinks the bat is a vampire, and the group are just thralls. Drama ensues. I agree on a representational democracy, in which votes are given through family and the like. I feel like they'd be wary but accepting of outsiders, if togetherness is so important, why keep outsiders out? They strike me as being very inclusive if someones friendly and willing to join their family.

How does a kalang move around when not flying? does walk like a bat or upright? does it have hands on it's wings or just wings? It's surprisingly hard to add a set of fingers that can actually hold things to a wing without it being an anatomical disaster. just asking cause i'm trying to draw this thing and the hands are the biggest roadblock

then families in the Kalag society are more than just blood-relatives. Makes sense. This also strikes the question: do they marry? how? would that be a merging of the two (or more?) families, instead of one leaving for the other, or the partners to become their own family? maybe they dont marry, but include their partners on the family as "sisters" or "brothers" ? does this imply they dont see incest as something icky or taboo? Seems alien enough for me.

I don't quite follow. Echolocation works by sending sound out, then having it reflect back. If no sound comes back (eaten, as it were), then it would be as if the space the absorber occupies is infinitely distant. At best there'd be a hole in their perception with nothing on the other side of it because any sound coming from the opposite side is likewise absorbed.

Hell, maybe we can have it both ways. The Inperceptible and The Grave of Song are just two manifestations of the same entity.

The vampire bats are the slashing type. Lots of cuts, and when the target is weakened they feed.

Insectivores disorient with sonic attacks and then precisely target critical points on their foe with their claws.

Fruit-eaters use poisons distilled from certain of the things they grow.

Bats also are likely to have some gunpowder weaponry and explosives, given the ready supply of nitrates. Rockets, for example, and bombs dropped with nightmarish accuracy.

Feathers would be an element of their traditional clothing, for the same reason that humans have a thing for the skins and fur of large predators. Back in their prehistory, a kalang warrior who could kill the dreaded That-Which-Hides-In-Silence would be highly respected amongst the tribe. In general, most birds are either competitors for prey, a mortal threat, or both.

Bat wings are more resistant to damage and faster to heal than they look. Yeah, a huge arm-to-edge gash would be a dealbreaker, but taking a stab or two from a sharp dagger or whatever wouldn't ruin things forever, no more than a person is crippled-for-life from a broken leg. Bells, chimes and other things that make sound as a fashion statement and a practical way of differentiating your soldiers from the ones from the kalang city-state under the next mountain over. It's something they generally use against groundsiders, who could ruin their shit with a pikewall if they tried "dive and slash with blades".

Against other kalang, explosive weapons don't usually work because the targets are too agile, aside from the other issues you mentioned. Using them against a kalang city is the sort of thing that gives you an epithet like "the Terrible" or "the Butcher" and an unpleasant place in the history chants.

Well, there's the thing: they aren't. They're just very large sapient bats with a few anatomical oddities. They only look human in so far as any other occasionally-bipedal mammal would look human.

The rest is because tattoos and piercings are standard bodymods for pretty much any culture that doesn't have much of a thing for clothing, and because there's only so many ways to make reasonable outfits for a creature that needs to have shit stay in its pockets when it does an immelman at high speed.

Clothing wise, I'm seeing them as making things out of soft leather and making few cloaks or mantles. a traditionally adorned kalang lower body would be covered by a leather skirt or kilt and wrappings over the feet. the upper bdy would be moostly bare, with a vest or long tunic. gloves would be hard to find, as would boots. their armor would consist of leather and light-mail, and when venturing into daylight for long periods, a kalang may wear a thin blindfold to block some of the sun, or maybe tinted goggles. I feel like the Kalang idea is being split into two factions. the original idea, and the more technologically inclined Kalang who use guns and explosives.

As before stated, making things that go BOOM when your race relies on sound for basically 75% of your navigation isn't too bright - you'd cripple most of your own men in the process of taking out a few enemies. So we kinda figured explosives/firearms would be left to the equivalent of Kalang "mad scientists". Most of the race would rely on melee like kicks, blades and hit-and-run dive tactics.

So if you saw a Kalang with rings through his wing-membranes close to the body (think of the brass tie-down grommets on a tarp here, except painful skin-implants, folks), you'd know not to get him mad, because he was a bat with soldier training.

Wing shape and flexibility are a big thing for kalang, I suspect. Ears also. Breasts is silly; aside from the fact that that way lies furrydom and yiffing, they'd screw with a kalang's aerodynamics.

To be blunt, we have to try to think of what might be considered attractive to a bat, not what might be considered attractive to a human. Then run with it. Xenophilia is, as always, more a matter of individual characters than of the two species sharing erogenous zones and physical features associated with them.
