Ok, since is was deleted for being a spin-off of an unrelated and delete-worthy thread, I'll post a new one to continue the good conversation.

A Sister of Battle Cartoon/Anime. What would you like to see?

I'd like to see them in thier role as the ones who keep the Eccesiarchy from getting too corrupt. They are the Angels of Justice who jusdge right from wrong and cast down the Heretic and the False Prophet.

    >Also this thread does raise an interesting point, who does most of the SOB armour repairs? The techpriests don't like them and every one of them wears power armour, so they wouldn't have enought techpriests for maintainance, let alone battlefeild repair.

Tech-Priests. You get posted to a convent when you manage to get past all his mental augmetics and really piss off the High Magos

    >Do Sisters have a Black Carapace implant? How do they interface with their power armour?

Continuing on Armor and the lack of black carapace.
    >Training. It's not instinctive for them. They actually have to learn to not hurt themself with power armour.

    >If it's so high-tech, why is it made of leather?
It's light power armour. The stuff is only a little thicker than carapaces, though powered and made of MUCH better material.

    >Also, the leather corset thingy goes over the armour as far as I can tell.
I always figured it was designed just to look like one for asthetics.

    >Sister's power armour is indeed made of ceramite. And, while not as thick as Astartes power armour, is still proof against many weapons. They don't have the black carpace so they lack a lot of the additional life-support functions that Astartes power armour has.

    >Their bolters, however, are full size. I believe it's mentioned that Godwyn-Deaz pattern bolters are too large and dangerous to use without the power armour's strength bonus.
Going by the Dark Heresy rules Sororitas power armour counts as light power armour with a few differences.

-Body is AP 8, not 7.
-Energy supply from backpack lasts as long as an astartes one.
-Helmet, when they earn it, contains an advanced targeting spirit that grants +5 BS.

A 40K anime could be interesting, because 40K actually has its very own High School setting - the Schola Progenium. 16-17 year-old Commissar Cadets, Sororitas Novitiates, and Administratum clerics receive their first day passes to visit the town outside the walls they have been secluded in to achieve necessary Socialisation skills, and hi-jinks ensue. There follows a plot where a group of Progeny, stirred in true faith by a (very)hard-but-fair Drill Abbot, are dismayed when that Drill Abbot passes away and they uncover an evil Chaotic cult amongst the faculty.

There's even a canon reason for the complete absence of the characters' parents, as they're all orphans. And hell, Japanese school uniforms are derived from military clothing as it is.

    >The usage of Xeno technology
True that, but if a techpriest has lived on the ship pretty much his whole life and tau don't really care to put their "superior" technology to human ships, I doubt the techpriest really gives a flying fuck.

The ship keeps moving. It keeps shooting. Only the targets change. Deep in the bowels of the ship, the lonely techpriest oils the ship and prays to it. Just another day to him.

The "Penitent Engine" treatment is like becoming a Repentia. Though it doesn't translate in the rules, the pilot of the engine looks really exposed, so as it is quite a large target, it may not be the best idea to pilot one... except in the case when you actually seek death on the battlefield.

Okay, let's see if we can make a synopsis for a Sororitas anime.

    "As The Emperor Wills"

    ARC 1:

The heroine is Winifred (if only because my local church is St. Winifred's), a Militant Sister garrisoning a shrine-city housing a precious relic said to have been handled by the Emperor himself. The precinct is attacked by CSM who wish to seize the relic and use it to power miscellaneous Nefarious Deeds. The SoB fight valiantly but are eventually overwhelmed, and the relic is stolen.

This conveys the physical, institutional and monumental nature of the Ministorum, establishes it as a militant church with the Sisters as its knights, and also that this faith is tangible.

    ARC 2:

Winifred is only one of a handful of survivors from the battle and she is plagued by survivors' guilt. Over the course of a couple of episodes set in the cloisters of a convalescent priory various prioresses in her order and other clergy take different positions on her desire for absolution, allowing for some theological and philosophical meditations that showcase the unique and diverse nature of Imperial religion, as well as its general hard and demanding colour. Eventually Winifred seeks to redeem herself with deeds and continue the work of her deceased sisters through the magnified effort of herself. She is overjoyed when the Pontifex who her order defers to announces a War of Faith to purge a colony that has been proven to consort with Tau.

    (Continued)
    >> Anonymous 01/21/11(Fri)16:44 No.13606972
    >>13606873

    ARC 3

The War of Faith on the colony begins, and Sororitas drop en masse. Initially PDF surrender in droves and Winifred falters in her confidence, but as they approach the colony capital the hard core begin deploying Tau weapons against the Sororitas, naturally only transfiguring each and every last Sister into a PMS Inferno of RAGE at being defiled by the alien, and battle is joined in earnest. There's also some direct fighting against Tau proper as the Water Caste ambassador and his bodyguard try to extricate themselves, providing an appropriate contrast of the Imperium and its foes.

    ARC 4:

The fires have died down, now there is the clearing away of the ashes. Winifred discovers that the Tau infestation was limited to the mining magnates who ran the colony, who were aiming to use Tau equipment to overproduce and under-report, so denying the Imperium tithes and lining their own pockets. The wider populace was largely unconnected to the xenophilic heresy, but they nonetheless have died in their thousands. Winifred has an opportunity to speak to the Pontifex and she raises her concerns about the collateral, but the Pontfiex is bullish - innocence proves nothing, everyone is guilty of something (knowingly playing on Winifred's own guilt) and judgement comes one way or another. Even if someone genuinely is blameless, his death still has value because it serves to demonstrate the magnitude and irrepressibility of Imperial justice, a worthy sacrifice.

    (Continued)
    >> Anonymous 01/21/11(Fri)16:53 No.13607086
    >>13606972

    ARC 5:

The cleanup continues. Rogue Traders and noble houses looking to reinvest and replace the heretical magnates start popping up, showcasing the decentralised and diverse nature of Imperial politics. The Pontifex takes charge of signing contracts, ensuring that big subscriptions are paid to the Ministorum for the funding of good works and rebuilding the shrines destroyed in Arc 1. Along with the carpetbaggers comes an Explorator ship. The AdMech try to take possession of the Tau equipment for study and research, causing a bit of a jurisdictional spat with the Ministorum who wants to destroy them. A technomagos character insists that he's a loyal servant of the Emperor, and that there's more than one road to Earth.

Winifred also meets a Dialogan studying captured Tau documents. At first she's disgusted, but learns to respect the Dialogan's massive strength of faith to endure all of the lies of the alien, to actually understand them and yet still not be swayed by them and continue to despise them. This highlights that Imperial morality is different from modern morality and you could never accuse them of relativisim.

    ARC 6:

Return to the shrine-world, which despite the Pontifex's efforts is still largely devastated with only half-hearted efforts at rebuilding. Through investigation alongside the technomagos and the Dialogan Winifred discovers that this is because the Pontifex has been siphoning off funds - he's actually an apostate and an agent of the CSM who attacked the shrine back in Arc 1.

    (Continued)
    >> Anonymous 01/21/11(Fri)17:01 No.13607172
    >>13607086

    ARC 7:

Winifred organises an uprising to depose the Pontifex. The CSM arrive to extract him - although not out of fraternity, only because their commander can't afford the loss of face that would come from losing a senior agent, which would encourage his subordinates to intrigue against him and make their own bids for power (illustrating the brutish and darwinist nature of Chaotic life). CSM vs. SoB, Round 2, this time the Sisters send the CSM packing and capture the Apostate.

    ARC 8:

The apostate Pontifex is tried and condemned. He is not, however, a pathetic venial sybarite, and actually did not profit personally from all of the funds that he stole - he has lost his faith and is convinced that the Emperor is dead. Winifred is unimpressed - the pontifex may be deaf, but her own ears ring clearly with the Emperor's will. As she prepares to administer the sentence, the pontifex remains defiant, certain that if there is an Emperor he will walk to be judged by Him certain and unbowed. Winifred agrees, adding that the thousands killed thanks to the Pontifex's wretched petulant self-centred sulk, will be called as witnesses in the Emperor's hall of judgement.

Afterwards, Winifred is promoted to Canoness by a senior Ministorum cardinal (this story is not an anticlerical one; despite bad eggs like the pontifex, the insistution of the Ecclesiarchy is essentially sound and positive) and takes control of her order. She petitions the Caridnal to mount a new War of Faith, pursuing the CSM and reclaiming the lost relic.

The end, with a hook for a sequel if it is successful.

Addendum to Arc 6: the revelations do not come immediately, only after an extended period where the Sorotias struggle to maintain order on the shrine world as its populace mutiny against conditions that are still not improving, leading to dirty, hateful fights amidst ruins. Maybe there can be a cameo for the Adeptus Arbites and a reiteration of some of legal disticntions that featured in the Shria Calpurnia books. The fact that the Emperor's munificence ought to have already arrived tips Winifred off that something is amiss.

Be sure to put some genuinely nasty characters in the slums during this section, as well as mutants and the like to illlustrate that the sinful lowborn need to be guided by the inspiration of Emperor-ordained higher powers. Maybe one of the reasons why the heroine survives the first battle in 'arc 1' is because she was assigned away from the reliquary and was instead protecting pilgrims from cultist slavers and not meeting the CSM's main effort at the reliquary. Back then, the tearful praise and thanksgiving of a rescued pilgrim profoundly affected the sister - but later on, during this 'pacification' arc, she meets the same pilgrim who's become a bitter and jaded agitator raising a bloody rabble spreading harm and destruction, and the sister is forced to kill her.

The sister is affected by this, but she does NOT harm her faith, rather, she takes from it the necessity of Order and organised Ecclesiarchical institutions - informal, extemporé worship appealing to the emotions sounds good, but emotions are flightly and can change all too dramatically, often for the worse. If the pilgrim had been couched in Order, she would not have slumped into vindictiveness.

That still leaves her wondering why the shrines are still bomb-blasted and that precious and necessary Order is not being restored.

Promoting her to Cannoness might be a bit of a stretch if she were just a regular sister. Working in somewhere that she got promoted up to their version of officers(Celestians I think, the ones with the helmets) somewhere in the story might be more beneficial.

Also, throw in somewhere about the Medicae if you can. You have to show the softer side of the Sisters too

One last thing though, obligatory cameo of a repenita squad. Might work best in the first spat with the CSM, and at least make sure the Sisters don't just get steamrolled by the marines. Make sure they at least take some of them down with them.

I suppose she could jump a few ranks at the end of Arc 1, if only because her order has been devastated by the CSM and there are a lot of vacant positions to fill. Trying to get a handle on her new responsibilities could be another way of showing her discomfiture in Round 2.

Maybe the Pontifex orders the prisoners to be subjected to heinous penances anyway, even though they've wanted no part in the heresy and have capitulated without resistance. This seems extreme even to the Sororitas, but it becomes clear once the Pontifex's true loyalties are revealed. It wasn't necessary for him as a Ministorum cleric to order such severe punishment, but given that he's operating on the basis not of what the Ministorum's role actually is, but rather what the acid-melted mutant parody curdling in his brain through his aposatical cynicism tells him to do (which becomes REALLY meta as it's a comment on the fans and their exaggerating fluff with GRIMDARK), then it becomes explicable.

Well, a series typically lasts 24-26 episodes (two seasons). 24/8=3 episodes per arc, plus a couple spare to play with if need be. However, these are just synopses and I don't know how long it would take to represent their events in full, so it wouldn't be wise to pin everything down to a regular limit at this early stage.

Maybe when the invasion is being planned, Navy strategists start drawing maps of the colony's orbital defences, and begin detailing bombing operations where they can be silenced with a minimum of risk and damage to infrastructure. However, the Pontifex vetos the action, demanding that the Sororitas drop without preliminary softening-up 'so as not to show cowardice and demean Imperial glory'. Naturally the Navy officers' reaction is a universal cocked eyebrow - 'what the fuck is this guy smoking' and so on - but when they try to quietly put him aside the Pontifex starts becoming incredibly legalistic, citing that as a War of Faith he's C-in-C. Eventually the Navy commanders shrug and go along with it, saying to themselves that once the Ministorum fails miserably and makes an ass out of itself maybe the Navy will have more politcal cachet in the future.

Of course, the Pontifex's real reason for this is because as a Chaos double-agent he wants to make things as hard for the Imperium as possible. Amazingly, though, none of the Sororitas dropships are destroyed! Maybe the Emperor is with them...

    >>13609982

Nah, fair enough that he wants to be wasteful but that's too obviously stupid. Maybe the Navy lays out plans for elegant and precise surgical strikes that will punch a neat hole in the orbital ranges - allowing the drop to occur without even having to destroy a majority of the installations - only for the Pontifex to demand a massive exaggerated direct orbital bombardment instead for 'shock and awe' purposes.

I'd like it to start off focusing on various squads. Sure, there's the "main character" but enough on other squads for the viewer to build a rapport.

Start off with an epic battle scene in the first episode, then cut to the sisters recovering and preparing to move out to the next planet. Early establishment that they all have melta bombs. Possible cultist infestation, time to burn out the cancer. Deal with the daily interactions a bit, their interior politics before landing on the planet.

Unfortunately, it only sort of turns out to be cultists -- instead, it's a gene stealer cult. Naturally, things go bad fast. This, if anything, only strengthens their resolve. These foul xenos are corrupting the holy human form. I can see one scene in my head where a well-liked squad attempts to hold a spaceport while the cultists attack to allow pure civilians to escape. One by one, they fall in combat. The last one pauses to watch the last shuttle take off before charging into the horde, making for the fuel tanks; cut back to a faraway view as she sacrifices herself in an explosion to do the maximum possible damage to the cultists.

Eventually, after many losses and marginal victories, the main character is captured and brought before the "father," stripped of her weapons but not her armor or gear. Scene of her praying, asking for guidance and strength. He commends her, but expresses his intent to make her join them. She refuses, naturally, but he says that she doesn't have a choice. She is human, and weak. Quick flash of her hand gripping her armor. He grabs her face, moving his mouth closer to hers. Obvious overtones as something is seen inside. She hisses "you will not, for the Emperor is my strength" before jamming a melta bomb in its mouth. There's just a surprised look from it before boom.

All over the planet, the genestealers and cultists go all derpy, allowing the remaining sisters to easily mop them up. The last scene is them doing a slow march, burning bodies. The Canoness comes across the MC's rosary thing, offering her a blessing and commending her. The last actual shot is of the MC with her arms crossed, eyes closed, (nude, natch) smiling peacefully as she's bathed in golden light.

At first she's disgusted, but learns to respect the Dialogan's massive strength of faith to endure all of the lies of the alien, to actually understand them and yet still not be swayed by them and continue to despise them. This highlights that Imperial morality is different from modern morality and you could never accuse them of relativisim.

I can see this as being a very important scene, as well. Winifred went into the War of Faith hoping that some honest purging would dispel her doubts - however, the questionable nature of the way that the campaign was conducted if anything makes her more clouded and unsure of herself. Seeing the Dialogan's vivid commitment despite everything, though, would restore her confidence - however much the outward world may be darkened, there's a light in herself to lead the way.

I don't agree. There's always going to be plenty of cloister politics, and scenarios like the investigative section of Arc 6 in >>13607086 aren't impossible - remember the non-Militant orders. The Dialogan could approach Winifred and tell her worriedly "I've been looking at the shipping invoices, x tons of building materials were ordered, so why have only x/10 tons arrived?" and ask Winifred to use her seniority to open a few doors for her so she can dig deeper.

I'd rather not have an Inquisitor be directly involved, really. They have a tendency to steal the show and I'd rather attention remain focused on the Sororitas. Maybe there can be indirect references to keep them shadowy and powerful, like the Navy strategists remarking that their intelligence about the dispositions of the heretics on the mining colony come from a 'reliable source', but to feature them directly would dilute the SoB focus too much.

It's a theological icon expressing the manifest destiny of mankind, its biological fecundity and its ordered society, through the sprawl of urban construction, which was fashionable for a time amongst the Adeptus Mechanicus out of its 'condensed physical poetry'. The trend for tech-priests to carry concrete icons was not universal, and attracted criticism from some opinion-formers in the Machine Cult for failing to exploit the aesthetic sense which defines humanity, displaying a genericness which could easily be translated into wretched xenos construction, too. Others said it looked stupid.

You might as well pitch a hyper nitch series to fox and expect it to go 4 seasons due to top ratings. Anime is in the shiter because studios have to make money outside their brodcast, which means DVD extras (read fanservice uncensored) and merchandise (read T&A wall scrolls, figures, and VN games).

Also, one last suggestion: make sure to have at least one scene at one of the Inquisition hubs. It makes the perfect opportunity to show what the other of the Emperor's might are(Ordos Malleus, Xenos, and Hereticus) and a chance for the Grey Knights and Space Marines to have a brief cameo(not asking for a 20 min wank on how great they are, just something like "Ow yeah, there's also these guys, but just ignore them")

What would I want to see?

Well I'd be happy with the Sisters being treated as Soldiers first and women second.

Give them power armor, bolters, flamers, meltas, and chain swords and have them hold their own against CSM in the first episode or so and don't make them the ineffective meat shields/plot devices they tend to be in half the novels and that will be accomplished.

Showing a softer side of them in their downtime wouldn't hurt though.

Bathing scenes to purify their bodies.

Armor in rare occasions breaking, this might be including a bullet wound. And this would happen the same way it did in GITS and similar.

Fan service should not be a focus of the show but a background enhancer.

Maybe some Eldar arrive to assassinate the aposate Pontifex - the Sororitas, who are still ignorant as to his true nature and need little encouragement to rag on the xenos anyway, fight to defend him. Alternatively, during Arc 6 Winifred has to learn to control her itchy trigger finger when some information-bearing Rangers start stalking her through the ruins.

"Okay, so, we know what these SoBs can be like. Put your weapons away, and come out slowly, and gently, and make soothing noises. We don't want to startle her. Okay? Ready? Three, two, one - greetings, fair maid--"

    *BUDDABUDDABUDDABUDDABUDDA*

    "Run awayyyyyyyy!"

"Godfuckingdamnit, can't the monkeigh bitch take a hint?"

"Hey, she's getting better. She only fired five shots that time, not half a magazine."

"Couldn't we just hide our ears and pretend to be human?"

Yeah, Daemonifuge was what really sold GW comics. It definitely helped make Warhammer Monthly a regular fixture. I wonde rif it's a little too fast-paced for the uninitiated, though.

Sister of the Silk Shroud. They're canon in my campaign as of just right now.
There's an Order Minoris in Hive Tarsus that specializes in singing, so why not? The Silk specialize in weaving.
They make the finest cloth for Ecclesiarchical uses, while also protecting the Agri-World where the giant murderous silkworms "grow". No, silkwyrms. Like silkworms, but fuckhuge and ridiculously dangerous. Think "Arrakis sandworm" dangerous.
Various weaving techniques can be used to make different things out of their silk : parchment, art, clothes, half-processed industrial material, maybe even armor if you want to get silly (although with both Faith and Science! you might justify even that).

Thanks, captcha, for giving my silkworm species a perfectly usable name.

Okay, so say that a SoB TV series has been commissioned. What's the theme tune?

    I'm going with this:

I like that. It seems like an appropriately thematic role for Sisters when they're not off campaigning.

Thousands of nerds eagerly cluster around their televisions, ready for the biggest event in their wargaming lives.

The network ident plays. The announcer declares "And now... 40K TV!"

    There's a GW ident...
    The production company ident...
    The studio ident...
    ...and then, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjZ2zwXbta4&ob=av3nm

I feel a great disturbance in the Warp, as though thousands of nerds raged, and died of apoplexy.
