    Part ninety? Fuck me.

You are David Lister, ace mobile suit pilot for the principality of Zeon and CO of the elite Nachtmaren Unit.

In the last few episodes you have been fighting on multiple fronts on the ground and in space as the Federation mount their counter-attack campaign after months of stalemate.

Currently you are at the besieged California base, attempting to round up reinforcements and munitions to try and help tip the balance up in space. Your Commanding Officer; Lord Captain Garma Zabi has already given the order to abandon the base and retreat using the extensively rebuilt rail network to the south of the US and you are currently directing your team to try and inform as many isolated pockets of friendly units as you can before you must return to space.
    >> Anonymous 01/21/11(Fri)12:33 No.13604692
    Zeonquest Fuck Yeah!

So, are we able to have some of the Zeon troops here help get Cima and her EXAM MS out of here, while David and Elaine go and secure the reactor?

Your current situation: You descended to the underground submarine docks to in order to try and rescue as many friendly units as you could, including Cima Girahou's Mashiba Team.
When you arrived you found yourself embroiled in a series of close quarters urban combats. After defeating several of the enemy you met up with friendly marine forces who had just destroyed the off-board Federation Naval vanguard using the JAburo Specials that you left in California all those months ago.

Cima Girahou however was injured in the process of engaging a pair of marine type Gundams, you encountered difficulties trying to remove her from her cockpit...

    >The smell of saltwater, oil and smoke greet you as you get your first taste of earth air for quite a while. You don't have time for that right now though, and you quickly make your way to Cima's Gyan Marine, the cockpit accepts your security key and opens up for you.
    >Cima Girahous is currently slumped over in her chair, she still appears to be breathing and hasn't sustained any injuries, so from the looks of it, she's just unconcious. You reach inside to try and wake her up.

    >You are suddenly hit by a blinding headache, and a horrific sound that would be best described as a thousand voices screaming words you can't make out whilst simultaneously, it's like someone just took a cheesegrater to your brain.
    >You recoil backwards instantly.

Your wingman Elaine "Ruubens" Arronax is accompanying you, whilst the other members of the unit are split up performing other tasks up top.

    YOUR ORDERS?

Oh, I wanted to say that the Fontaine-class sounds like it would be a good name for the new Zeon ship class that you came up with for the after-war period.

My suggestion would be to emphasize its modular nature, as part of the UMP philosophy, and that the Minovsky Craft Flight System be a modular engine unit that can be swapped when going to a gravity environment.

We don't have any kind of troop carrier or medical vehicle, so leaving Cima inside her MS might be safest.

That was not the best plan ever by any stretch of the imagination you know. Also, fuck you for reminding me about V Gundam. I only read the episode synopsises at MAHQ and by the end of it I staggered away feeling like a part of my soul had died.

    >Also, Have we met any GM Striker yet? I can't remember.

Yes. As other said, in Odessa, piloted by cast members from 0083 as they attempted to kite us away from attacking Admiral Revil.

    >So we CAN get leg rocket launchers! At last!

I'm still not personally convinced in how sensible having high explosive rockets THAT close to a thermonuclear powered fan-jet is. Things could go very very wrong very quickly with a set-up like that. Shoulder mounted weapons, like the Dom Cannon types make sense, but there on the legs? That close to that much potential heat?

    >Task some of the Zeon MS to gather up survivors and get them and Cima top-side.

The nearest MS to you is the Jaburo Specials team.

She doesn't seem to react to shouting, but you aren't a medic so you can't really guage how much of a bad sign that might be.
The area seems devoid of normal personell you assume the order was given to evacuate the place of all non-essentials when the enemy was sighted, and that the order to evacuate the command areas was probably given when the enemy began infiltrating the docks.

Order the Jaburo Specials, to get topside with anyone that can't move on their own, and with Cima and her MS.
Garma will undoubtedly be able to find some use for the suits during his reign as 'The Wolf', and Cima and her EXAM suit are very valuable assets (veteran pilot and high-tech weapon system respectively).

Then David and Elaine should go and check the reactor. Maybe trap the sub entrance, but only if there's a way to warn any returning Zeon aquatic forces of the trap.

Call for Medic if possible, If one is unavailable, then pull her out of the damn unit and put her at ours while we move on, Our piloting ability will be hindered, And it will be cramped, But if we just take her to the nearest medic station we can offload her there.

Leaving her in her unit is quite the risk since there is a chance the that she won't wake up and be able to pilot herself into safety, or that she is discovered by enemies before she can recover.

And my Meta-Sense tells me that a active EXAM system is not something you will want to leave a unconscious pilot in.

It's true that if she doesn't wake up, Cima will be a sitting duck in the EXAM suit. But I don't know if the other suits of the Jaburo Specials can handle doubling up, and we should really check the reactor. We're abandoning this base, but we'll still need power to make our escape.

As for the suit, it's one of the few that we have actively deployed, and I think it's worth saving.

You check with the leader of the MSM team and he confirms that there won't be anybody else coming. You sensors show however that the large pen doors have been specifically damaged to swing open, fixing them to shut would require a full engineering team with plenty of time.
You also can't be sure about the situation in the waters. You can still see signs of fighting and the occaisional damaged friendly mobile suit escaping from it, but you don't know how many enemies are down there still.

Then let's have David and Elaine go to the reactor.
We can either set it to have an emergency quench which will take weeks to repair, or set up bombs to destroy the coolant systems.

Anyone not getting to the surface now or coming with us, should probably engage in a fighting withdrawal so they can escape.

Ideally, until we got as many people as possible out. We've relayed Garma's orders to several people here, hopefully it's spreading on the local command networks, fractured in this place as they must be, and the friendly forces are making their retreat now.

We only really need the powerplant to power the industrial lift that takes us back up, as the marine entrance is unsuited for us, and it places us out of position, increasing the amount of time it takes to return to the Spaceport > outer heaven > space > support Char against Revil.

We can set a proximity device on it so that it will go critical when another Mobile Suit get's too close. With the order to evacuate given, no other Mobile Suit down here has got any reason to defend the reactor.

You tell local forces that you're going to make sure that the facility reactor is still clear, and then you're going to booby trap it to go critical if approached. You remind them all to get out as fast as they can now that the evacuation order has been given.

You begin to make your way back through the warehouses, offices and sub pens of the underground docks. Holding a close formation, ready for any more enemy ambushes.
You encounter a couple of friendlies, damaged, but making their way back to the dock entrance, but no sign of the enemy.
You talk with a discovered Z'Gok about the enemies location, he reveals that local forces suspect that the enemy is on the left hand side of the submarine docks, using the recessed cover of the dry docks and drydock walls to conceal their approach, opposite to the route you're taking.

If true that could mean that the most likely point of enemy contact would be when you reached the mouth of the sub-pen area, where you encounted the enemy earlier.
You double check your supply of disposable muntions and ammo and continue on your way.

Using the periscoping camera's on your mobile suits fingers you carefully check around the corner of a wall. The sonar resistant materials the facility is made out of hampers sonar sensors in detected enemy units, but old fashioned techniques work just as well. The IR sensors reveal the heat signal for a pair of Marine GM's waiting in ambush for friendly forces coming directly down from the out of the sea pool, but behind them is a large drydock wall that could easily conceal more enemies. You will have to get past them to reach the lift and the reactor though, so you have to pick a good way of doing so.

    YOUR ORDERS?

    >>13605453
How about some flash and smoke grenades mixed in with some stick grenades to disorient the GMs, as David and Elaine burst out from cover.
Elaine takes out the GMs with her beam weapons, and David throws the rest of his grenades over the wall to catch any enemies in hiding, while spraying his beam carbine to shoot through the wall. His beam can go through the drydock wall, right?
If not, then just stick to throwing all the grenades.
    >> Anonymous 01/21/11(Fri)14:12 No.13605615
Collapsing the tunnel and avoiding combat entirely would be the best option.

We have more useful things to do then waste time and lives that will have no impact on our negotiation terms.

Throwing a (Explosive) Grenade at them without leaving cover could also work, And could cause any nearby units laying in wait behind the wall misunderstand the situation and burst from their cover while we are still in ours.

After all, They would detect the explosions, but no idea WHAT exploded or why.

So throwing a "decoy" grenade and then collapsing the tunnel on what units that would potetially appear using our a powerful weapon would probably be sensible, It can't be too powerful though, Lest we crush ourselves.

If they truly are alone we can pick of the damaged units using basic weaponry.

Although i do not have a mind for strategies.

The tunnels too big and well reinforced to collapse.

Overall plan seems to be make use of flashbangs and smoke grenades (you might as well, smoke grenades are going to be useless once you return to space after all) toss a few slightly more explosive grenades in the enemies direction and then retreat into the more enclosed entrance to the section that links the sub pens with the rest of facility?
What then? Hold it? Move out towards the reactor? Wait for any enemy response?

    You'd have done that anyway.

You prime a smoke and flashbang grenade and toss them out towards the enemy units. Priming a Stickbomb you toss it towards the hopefully stunned enemies as you break cover to dash towards the interlink area. Missiles fly erratically in the general area you just vacated, and when the grenade goes off you detect secondary explosions, signifying that you most likely took something out at the very least.

Both of you cover the area to check for any pursuers, after satisfying yourself that there aren't any for now you continue to move through the MSM testing area to the intersection.

This time you go left following the route towards the power supply. The terrain here is close in and claustraphobic, large buildings crowd on either side, it's a bad spot if there's an ambush waiting for you. You spot several recently made bunkers fitted with heavy AT Guns, most likely put in place by Zeon after the occupation, they don't appear to be currently occupided, they must have been evacuated when the order came.

Mindful of any booby traps these troops might have sent you carefully check on multiple sensor bands for any traps or other nasty suprises those troops might have set before they left.

Luckily this practice pays off and you manage to sidestep several large minefileds that spraypainted black, would be hard for conventional mobile suits to spot if they weren't careful.

In a reasonable amount of time you manage to make it to the reactor. You can still see some signs of battle damage from where the previous rector was destoryed. In it's place is an apparently jury rigged cluster of nuclear fusion reactors, it appears to have been reasonably well maintained, but you don't believe it was ever really intended as a long term solution.

"Huh, looks like they just took as many Zaku powerplants as they needed and daisy chained together. It's a pretty rough and ready solution, I don't know why they didn't devote the time to just replacing the old one with a brand new one."

"Can you rig this up to explode on proximty?" you ask.

"Easily, it's a wonder they haven't already, those reactors aren't meant to be on THIS long, they must be turning them off refueling them with Helium-3 in sequence as they run dry. In anycase, I can probably set something up with seismic sensor programs as a trigger switch. I recommend we don't dawdle after set the time, we don't want to be anywhere near here when this goes off."

"How big of an explosion are we talking?"

"Not big, 8 kilotons at worst, plus all of the minovsky particles in the air are going ot arrest radiation spread and the fact that it's underground is porbably going to ablate the damage. Most of the blast will probably be funnelled out through the sea gate. Still, by the point this thing goes off, every Zeon should be miles away."

With your work finished, you quickly move back to the lift. There you meet with another couple of damaged units, a pair of old Marine type Zaku's, you guess they must have been kept in the facility as training units and desperate times called for desperate measures.

Despite their poor quality, the two seem to have managed to avoid getting badly damaged, but they seem pleased to see you.

"Sir! The lift is currently descending back down after lifting a group of damaged friendlies to the top, it will be a few more minutes before it returns. But we've got problems, a squad or more of Federation mobile suits have been ghosting us since the sub-pens, we'll have to hold them off! What are your orders?"

The current locaction is that of the tunnel that connects the subpens, lift and reactor complex together, There is little cover here, but the sonar resistant design of this facility means the enemy cannot see you until they turn the corner, but the reverse is also true.

There is however more cover in the MS testing zone, as you yourself discovered when you were nearly ambushed by a mobile suit hiding in a pile of spare parts, but that would mean backtracking the way came, plus you can't tell until you turn the corner if there are enemies already stationed there to greet you.

    YOUR ORDERS?

It's doable, but small as they are, those camera's aren't invisible, and furthermore, the walls are resistant to conventional firearms and projectiles, but beam weapons will still slice through, if they spot the camera and extrapolate your position...

It's a reduced risk strategy to be sure, but not risk free.

No backtracking. As for the blind corner, let's head over to it, kneel, and use one f our finger cameras to peek around. If it's lot to the ground, I doubt any approaching MS will spot it, it shouldn't be discernible from a stray cable or something, unless this place is very clean and spartan. That way, we can see the enemy as they approach, if I've got this all visualized correctly.

    >>13606602

True, they've not shown any beam weaponry, you suspect the federation has trouble manufacturing hand held beam weapons for use on the GM frame, unlike your bespoke marine designs which can incorporate internal beam weapons using the water around them as coolant.
That said, you distinctly remember the Marine type Gundams possessing a Beam Rifle, and whilst you haven't seen any more, it wouldn't do to be taken by suprise.

Definitely give up our bullpup to one of the Zakus, while David switches to his beam carbine.

It's risky to use our finger camera, even if we do kneel down so we're low to the ground. But It's better than nothing.

Prepare a flash, smoke, and stick grenade combo to through around the corner to blind and disorient any enemy GM's that come within range.

Char doesn't use them as meat shields so much as wingmen try to keep up to his pace, it's like trying to chase a bird as it flies over a cliff.

You pass on your Bullpup rifle to one of the Zaku's, which he gladly takes, no doubt aware of the inadequacies of his current weapon. You then move up to the corner and take a look around.
Initially things look optimistic, you don't see any sign of the enemy. But after a few seconds you catch sight of movement behind the fuel hoppers. Enemy units moving forwards.

You have some options here, if those fuel hoppers aren't empty, they'd make excellent explosive devices, however, you have no way of ascertaining which is and which aren't, and you might reveal yourself for no gain.

You prepare a cracker grenade, if there are any full drums, it has a better chance of setting them off with it's wider spread.
With some force you then toss it towards the cylindrical hoppers. The weapon bounces off the first one with a hollow clang, evidently that one was empty, but after it bounces away and into the second one, there is a much more favourable sound.

You see the enemy mobile suits scrambling away, evidently aware of the danger as well, but not in time before the cracker goes off.

The massive fuel explosion flattens the area, and only by your quick thinking are you able to dive out of the way of the backblast.
When it's eventually safe, you take a look around again, large parts of the area are still aflame, and everything is charred and flattened. There's not more cover this way, that's for sure. You hope those flames don't cause any problems for friendly units.

In any case, the explosion seems to have scared off the enemy for now. Giving you enough time for the lift to arrive. You and the friendly units board it and use it to travel back to the surface, the Marine GM taking the time to hand you back your Bullpup rifle.

More of the Dock area appears to be aflame, you can see several new columns of smoke coming from all around. There are no enemies nearby that you can detect.

The HLV's landed a couple of minutes ago and we've begun loading them up with supplies. 4 have been put aside and are being loaded with supplies and Anti-Beam chaff. The remaining 11 are being loaded with all of the space capable mobile suits California can spare. It mostly F2 type Zaku's it has to be said, but at this point, we look likely to be able to bring roughly half a battalions worth of mobile suits with us when we launch. With a bit of luck, that might just turn the tide."

"What about Calvin and Bernie?" you ask.

"They travelled down as far as they dared linking isolated pockets of friendly troops back up with the command network, we were able to help since we get a pretty good view of the situation from here. They nearly bit off more than they could chew when they got flanked by a pair of Tank Companies, but luckily they were able to bull rush their way through. They're on their way back now, they should arrive round about the time you do if you start now."

You decide that it's time to initiate part two of your plan to save Zeon in a day. Although just once you wish you could make battle plans that allowed you to get some sleep, you have a feeling the different time zones here on earth from Zeon Time is going to kick your ass at some point.

You begin to make your way back. Luckily the enemy still hasn't progressed to your location yet, and the lack of air cover has slowed their movement to a more cautious pace.
As a result, aside from the occaisional Attack Helicopter encounter, which you dispatch relatively easily, there are no problems as you leave the docks and enter the central command area.

You take a few seconds as you reach the Mansion Garma had commandered as his GHQ. Come to think of it, the official HQ office for the Nachtmaren was in there as well.

Anyway, as the Outer Heaven descends down from it's fixed position in the sky, it looms heavily above you all, the ventral gates open up and the rest of the team take the oppourtunity to mount up, time is of the essence after all, you don't know when those enemy air assets might come back.

You leap into the apeture of the hangar door and turn to look back at the assembled Zaku's and other Mobile Suits, their eyes clearly upon you; the infamous Commander David Lister, destroyer of gundams, the man for whom no odds are too extreme, the El Muerto Grande. It occurs to you that this would probably be a good time for a speech.

ANYTHING SUITABLY INSPIRING BEFORE THE BATTLE?
NO NOVELS PLEASE, LET'S NOT TAX THE SHIPS HOVERJET THRUSTERS FOR NO GOOD REASON NOW.

What reaction? They all had heart attacks and died when it was approaching the battlefield.

Reports indicate that the federation comms were overwhelmed with panicked screams of "DEATH COMES FOR US! THERE IS NO HOPE!", and other similar statements.

The guys in the spaceport are the guys who are coming with you.

Also, Garma isn't going to be hiding in the desert. At least, I don't think it's all desert down on the Rio Grande...

    Soldiers of Zeon!

The Federation, even as we speak tries to drown the flame of our freedoms in a tide of their blood. Thanks to you, they have failed to darken the brightest of our lights, Lord Garma. With him, you will be the thorn in the tyrant's tail while our fleets break their back.

Watch for the falling stars of our enemies in the sky, a portent that offers our enemies only ashes and death. Sieg Zeon!

We ride for space, not to flee California but to strike at the Fleets threatening the colonies. Zeon forces from around the Earth Sphere will be fighting one of the most important battes we've faced this long year. We are fighting for our right to live free from of the Federation's grip. To exist as we see fit.
Space is where we shall stand, where we will fight and where we will win. Not because of destinly or because God is on our side, but becuase we stand united as one.

Today we tell the world in one voice: We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!

For the Colonies and all spacenoids!

    Okay here it goes:
We are all here today for a reason. Look to your left, look to your right. The man that stands beside you belives in the same dream as you, a dream of freedom and equality, of a bright and glorious future. Our enemy, the Federation, is fraught with corruption and fools. They seek to break us to their will, to make us no more than slaves, working to hold up their self proclaimed glorious nation. But we have shown them that we will not stand for that! We stand here today, amongst brothers and sisters, to show that we will not bow to their whims, that we will fight for our people and that as long as we have but a single breath in our bodies they will know to fear us, for we will not give them the satisfaction of victory any other way than death. Today, they think they have us trapped, that their strategy is flawless. SHOW THEM, THAT THEY KNOW NOTHING OF THE SPIRIT OF ZEON!

SEIG ZEON! FIGHT FOR OUR FUTURE!

    that suitible epic?

The Cheers are audible from space.

Which might negate the element of suprise that you've been working on, but no matter.
You finish boarding the Outer Heaven, which takes up an air patrol position to escort the HLV's as they make their launch. Within 5 minutes of frenzied activity the first of the HLV's begins their return run into orbit, just as you spot the enemy air units beginning to return after investigating your Decoy HLV's.

"Can they reach us to prevent the launch?" You ask Anita.

"Barring some form of delay, they shouldn't but the cat's out of the bag as to what our plans were so they're going to be riding their engines hell for leather."

You order your team to mount up. Unfortunately there are only two Dodai's aboard, so if you do have to go out then you'll have to choose which two of you does it.

Luckily, by the time the enemy get close the last of the HLV's is going up, far too fast for even the quickest of the Federations fighters to catch.

As you follow suit behind them, the enemy fighter snap at your heels, defensive flak turrets rotate to see them off, and your vessel takes effectively no damage. The force of escape velocity pushes you back into your cockpit as you return to space.

Now however, is where it get's tricky.

    --omake--

Calvin had not had time to dismount from his Gyan. So, he took the time remove his damaged helmet. He lifted it carefully to prevent injury, and inspected the damage.
As he feared the right hand side had been shattered, luckily the glass had fallen outwards rather than inwards and not damaged his face. The large hole and surrounding cracks would neccesitate a new helmet, but he suspected there wouldn't be much time for that once they got into space, but mostly because he didn't want the others to worry.
Instead he lifed the sealent gear from under his chair, intended to seal holes in vacuum suits, there were flexible pads that the sealant could glue into place over helmet cracks under these circumstances.
He applied a pad to both the inside and outside, sealed in place with the sealent, which also helped paste over the cracks surrounding it.
    He tested the helmet out.

As he feared he completely lost all vision to his right. He took the helmet off.
He placed it nearby, within easy arms reach atop his pilots chair, it might fall down in an impact, but the only way to go from there was his lap, and that would be where he needed it if he took a breach in the cockpit.

Even in a severe breach he would still have enough time to affix his helmet if needs be, although if there was a severe breach it would most likely be due to fatal damage anyway.

The best way to prevent THAT from happening would be by not closing off an entire side of his vision whilst about to go into the heaviest combat in the war.

To be fair, the dude is our scout, and the feddies have no clue that he even exists. But if he does die, we go DEATH INCARNATE, kill the bastard that got him, then we drag him back to life so we can smack him over the head for not grabbing a spare from the Outer Heaven, which should have some spares.

Or possibly a MS-15B with an EWAC pack that isn't from the Flipper. In Nachtmaren colours.
