Everyone needs to realize that every marine chapter's shit is like this.

Armor, Bolters, Chainswords, hell even KNIVES are all treasured artifacts that cannot be replaced (or replaced very easily). Everything will have a name, everything will have a story attached to it.

Just like that bolt pistol in that one BT comic. It had a history, and it was just some random bolt pistol. Every piece of marine gear is like that bolt pistol.

I'd say this. Relic have pretty clearly shown themselves to have a good grasp on the setting (that we took for granted, witness the reaction to Soulstorm's fluff-buggery). I wouldn't be surprised if it's an in-joke that somehow developed from the fact DoW is all based around stealing control points, that ended up as a company wide 'lol blood magpies' thing.

Most chapters haven't made up about 90% of their armoury out of stuff that used to belong to other chapters/institutions, though.

Most chapters will have "The Kronus Knife of Undying" where some guy stabbed a necron or some shit and the knife was all that was left, or something similar. Most chapters will *not* have a warhammer previously wielded by the chapter master of *another* chapter.
