You are Lonallyn Victrix IV Von Juggdrall, newly-Christened Rogue Trader and owner of the bounciest bed in the sector. Your ship, the Tempus Fugit, stands ready - a light cruiser with an Imperial Navy service record and an archaeotech plasma drive that no one seems to understand quite perfectly. Having just finished a "brief" tour of the ship, the only thing remaining on your agenda for the evening is to have dinner with and old friend, Maj. Wilhelm von Markov - an excitable, if talented soldier just back from the campaigns. You go way back together, to the days of playing pranks on the servants and pilfering your estate's pantry, but Wilhelm left that behind ten years ago to follow in the family footsteps, taking a commission in the Guard. Aside from dinner with Wilhelm, whose rather numerous messages relaying his excitement at your prospects betray him to be ever the same, what you do with your night is up to you. The crew stands ready to depart tomorrow, as per your request.

    >>Thy Crew Is:

    Your crew currently consists of

    Lucan the Seneschal
    >>A friend of your grandfather's, and his first associate. A quiet man who prefers understated clothing, appears to maintain a network of contacts, and, from what you can tell, is not afraid of "pre-emptively" protecting your interests. He normally shows little to no expression, and when he does, it is invariably unsettling

    Freya Ninakova, the Void Mistress
    >>The current Captain of the Tempus Fugit, selected by your grandfather. A young, red-haired Valhallan woman reputed to be an excellent pilot of small craft, and quite capable on the bridge. The crew seem loyal to her, despite rumours of her possessing a bit of a temper and a headstrong nature. She seems willing to listen to you, but your flat impression on the crew the other day seems to have affected her a bit too.

    Cassya Ninakova, the Astropath
    >>Another Valhallan, the younger of the Ninakovas. Psyker Grade Beta, has served the ship since your grandfather acquired it. She seems willing to honour the agreement with him through you.

    Joson von Liebowitz, the Navigator
    >>A paunchy man with a propensity for cowls and a razor sharp set of teeth. Mostly genial, though generally drinking, and he seems quite impressed with your nobility and willing to follow you.

    Frater Baldwin Abelard
    >>Your newest acquisition, a Celestine Missionary of around 107 Terran Standard Years of Age. You consider him a "bit of a bro", and he has said that he is willing to look the other way as regards your shady dealings, so long as you don't begin bringing souls into the question. Carries a massive Eviscerator around with him, along with an assortment of priestly tools and a battered flask of liquor that he appears to have brewed himself and mixes with holy oil. You tried some, it was like drinking down the contents of a hand-flamer as the trigger was being pulled. He seems to enjoy it.

Currently you have been considering the Koronus Expanse - the popular idea has been to either attempt to track down your grandfather and predecessor, who went missing near the Rifts of Hecaton along with his ship, the Crux Imperialis, some several years ago while attempting to locate new worlds, or to begin the search for new planets to claim by yourself. Any records of why Granddad went to the Rifts appear to have been lost, though he made vague mention in a letter to you of relying on augury and fortune-telling.

I should add as clarification - your Granddad is missing, not the ship. The wreckage from that was found exactly where he said he'd be, and though a few of the escape pods were launched, scans of the nearby planets showed them to be devoid of human life.

I'd say we shall attend to our new priest first mass. Also we talked last time about verifying we have all our wardrobe... and if we have some protective gear (void suit & armour).

    >>13443579
    Hmm.

If we're going to start claiming planets, it'll be very important to have a trained and well-equipped military force. One can't take a planet with one Rogue Trader and a few hundred crewmen using lasguns. How much transport capacity for military forces do we have?

Alternately, if we're going to just run around trying to track down our lost grandfather- which seems rather low in terms of profitability- we'll want to spec out for endurance, with extra supplies and fuel, plus an assortment of random valuable items that we might use as gifts for anyone we're trying to get information out of. But I would rather leave chasing Grandpa for after we have enough cash on hand to waste a year or six in a possibly-futile search.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/11(Sat)15:06 No.13443701
i'd personnally go to Port Wander or Fortfall, trying to get information on possible profitable ventures there ; if not, then start exploring. It might be too soon to claim worlds but we can already plunder them for riches, chart new warp routes...
    >> Dorn 01/08/11(Sat)15:07 No.13443717
    >>13443606
Alive and well I see - your drawings remain as impressive as ever! The Frater has said he intends to hold his first service once you're free of the planet and roaming the Void again, so you don't have to worry about that for the moment. Your wardrobe should be fully on-board by morning, and anything in the armoury is open for your use, though you haven't been to see the state of it yet.

    >>13443629
Your grandfather took care to modify crew housing, armoury, and the like to be able to support a sizeable expeditionary force, especially as he appears to have seen action with the Navy that gave him this ship. It's no troop transport, however - you could probably fit an average footslogger regiment if you had them, but if you want more than that, you'll need to do some work. Currently you have 0 regiments' worth of soldiers, though you do have naval ratings for defense and security.
    >> drawfag 01/08/11(Sat)15:18 No.13443791
let's check the armoury then ! by the way, we shall command a nice trophy item... We talked last time about organizing a regular fencing contest among our officers, to show them our swordmanship and to create some bonds. A nice sword & special uniform for the ship's champion ?

By the way everyone, how do you think Lonallyn fight ? I'd suggest a mono-groxwhip as a secondary weapon when we go in close combat. Our RT is a "got shit done" noble, but let's try to be both classy and dashing.
    >>13443717
    > thanks you.
    >> drawfag 01/08/11(Sat)15:21 No.13443803
and I forgot. Our ship is above a Paradise world, we can't really recruit an army here. we can try later, above a Hive world or in Footfall, they do have many scums & mercenaries for hire there.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/11(Sat)15:34 No.13443947
    >>13443803
    >Our ship is above a Paradise world
Dammit. All we'll be able to recruit here are useless nobles.

We should see about acquiring an actual regiment of soldiers- a guard or PDF regiment from somewhere. That'll require a stop-off; perhaps our friend will have a decent recommendation from his time on campaign.

    >>13443717
Naval ratings might suffice if we're boarded, but they're no conquering army. Or even a decent bodyguard. We need better.

Anyway, since it's probably all we'll be able to get, make sure that we pick up extra fuel here, some luxury items to sell later/use as bribes, any spare parts and additional supplies we can get before leaving.

Then let's spend some time reviewing the information that our void mistress was going to send us until dinner.
    >> Dorn 01/08/11(Sat)15:49 No.13444072
    Sorry, internet cut out.

    >>13443947
Remind me which information that was, again?

In the meantime, you have Freya send you an overview of your current armoury stores, knowing that your guest is en route. It appears from the Quartermaster's Report that the general equipment is flak armour, with a few sets of carapace armour to go around - enough to supply officers, mostly, and an equal assortment of lasguns and hellguns, with a few long-las for good measure. You have three man-portable lascannons and autocannons each, no powered armour, a sizeable amount of void suits, a handful of power weapons - swords and axes only, two plasma pistols, and maybe five meltaguns and plasma guns each. It's a motley assortment, but standard fare.

Also interesting to note is that you USED to have a suit of powered armour, it would appear. This item is listed as "SIGNED OUT: FAWKS, ROGUE TRADER", and two powerfists are "SIGNED OUT: S. HALE, WHAT-DO-YOU-MEAN-YOU-DON'T-KNOW-MY-RANK".

    Shit. Thanks, Granddad.

no power armor ? well, even if we still have it, it surely wasn't of our size. let's command from ther armoury a carapace armor and a void suit for our use.
Do we have a reception room or a big fancy dining room in this ship ?

    Ah yes.

Freya - or more likely, someone on the Bridge Crew - has begun the grueling task of trying to track down records of Rogue Trader-affiliated ships in this sector and in the Expanse, but this will take time. So far, the following traders have been identified.

Lupa von Horo. Several ships registered to this woman have gone through Port Wander in both directions. From what you know of her (this being the woman your grandfather may have been pursuing a romantic relationship with), her dynasty is of middling size, but good profit - she supplies the sector with rare spices from the Koronus Expanse, the location of which she guards jealously.

Ishmael Zarkan. This is the man who has sworn your death already, in a very theatrical manner. His dynasty is of small size, but rumoured to be well-connected. He is currently, according to your a source that your Seneschal wishes not to divulge, somewhere in the region of the Undred Undred Teef trying to quickly effect repairs to his engine after a large beast was "accidentally" released there.

Captain Mithras Nixios. Flagged as having entered the Koronus Expanse two standard months ago. No record of this Dynasty has reached the Administratum yet, leading to speculation that it might be new.

Severine the Scarlet. This woman has no record of making port in the Calixis Sector, but the fact that a bounty is still posted for her in the Koronus Expanse is evidence that she may be still alive. A Rogue Trader from a large Dynasty, with several ships, Severine is reputed to not be above acts of piracy. Whereabouts unknown.

At long last, you are roused from your reading by your Void Mistress in your commbead.
"My Rogue Trader, the lander with your guest for the evening is due to arrive in fifteen. Will I send him an escort somewhere when he arrives?"

As per my mention at the beginning of these threads way back when, SOME names bear trivia - some of these are obscure, some... Less so.

    >>Incoming Transmission
"Sextus Hale is of unknown origins, though he claims to originate from a planet in the Segmentum Obscurus called "Australium III". No such planet exists in the Administratum, and Messire Hale is prone to exaggeration, but he has not let his reasons for obscuring his past deter him from his work. Highly unusual in that I do not believe I have ever seen him use a firearm - or much beyond his fists, really. Convinced to use a powerfist, he has served admirably ever since the day I picked him up on Footfall, and has saved my life countless times on many a heart-stopping adventure. Had to tell him to get another powerfist though, as he discarded his old one while cleansing Deck Theta, Section 34 of abhumans when it became too damaged to continue working. Rather wish he'd brought it back...

Once you have deemed yourself properly attired (part of this, as your valet is quick to remind you, involves keeping everyone waiting), you make your way to the hangar, where the escort detail is already lined up, as per the usual form. As you draw closer, you can plainly see another figure - tall, with long black hair pulled back into a ponytail, wearing a military dress uniform consisting of a fine green coat and black trousers with matching boots, an ornate chainsword and hellpistol by his side. Upon seeing you, the ratings turn and snap to attention, and the man throws his arms wide and comes toward you at a stride.

Oh Throne. He's going to hug you in front of your crew.

"Lon! By the Throne, you look amazing! And what a ship! Ah, Lon - it's so good to see you!"

You won't have to roll to avoid hug... This time. And yes, Mita pressed your hat into your hand as you left, you just haven't put it on yet.

As Wilhelm comes striding over, you deftly step back with a little twist, smiling politely. He was never quite as nimble as you, even if was a better duelist, and he finds instead of your body, one extended hand. With a pleasant laugh, he quickly takes it and kisses it, tossing in a low bow for good measure.

"Hah! Look at this - I go away for a measly ten years, and they make you a full-fledged lady! They did a good job Lon - you look as confident as a Rogue Trader should, I'd suppose! The trip was lovely, but to be honest I would have ridden into a warzone in a Valk with no flooring if it meant seeing my good friend again!"

You maintain pleasant conversation all the way to your spacious dining hall, where you see a table has been prepared by Mita.

"So tell me, Lon... You're a big Rogue Trader now, in a ship that looks to be the pride of the armada - what's the plan for the future? Big damn adventures?"

You might even luck out, find an old soldier or two trying to make a fortune, a name, or a bit of profit who'd be willing to sign on with a Rogue Trader. Might try around the warzones too - I know there were a few Dogs of War hunting around 47 Pry for work, but if you head there odds are you'll be drafted into service by the Imperial Forces for something or another... Hell, they almost drafted the transport I was taking back here - and everyone in it - back into the fight! If you're wanting names, I sadly don't have any mercs on my shortlist - a few came by along with some Rogue Trader or another maybe five years back, but they weren't good sorts, Lon."

Wilhelm chuckles at your mention of his health, holding up his right hand and bending one of your forks (thankfully not the FINE ones, damn him) in it before Mita, with a bit of a glower, strides over and snatches it away. "Well... Health and a few adjustments, I'd suppose! You tend to lose the odd limb or two in protracted war, Lon. Hopefully you can avoid that!"

    >>13444952
    >>13444899
At the mention of military exploits and resources, Wilhelm's eyes light up, and he begins recounting all the different companies he's seen around the sector. "I was with the 47th Scintillan, of course - the family, and all... But Lon, there were some amazing ones there! Lemme tell you, Kriegers are creepy as hell, and they won't let you get under that gasmask for anything! Think they and some of the Vostroyans were the only out of sector forces though - we mostly had our own sorts doing the hard work. The General himself had seen the conflict on Tranch, and he was a right old bastard - took a las bolt to the gut at one point, and killed the traitor who did it!"

You do notice that he seems to be skirting the issue of outfitting your ship with military types, though... Any attempt to get further there will need a Fel roll and/or some good talking.

Wilhelm tells you that he did indeed have a colours sergeant and a group of bodyguards drawn from the NCOs of the 47th Scintillan - very capable men, and he's kept them on as personal retainers after they were all demobilized. They're currently at his residence, awaiting orders.

Do I gather from these that there is interest in having Lonallyn approach Wilhelm as a member of the crew (arch-militant?)?

You finish your meal after several more stories of Wilhelm's experiences on battlefields like the plains of 47 Pry - the accuracy of some of which you might call into question, but the majority of which sound believeable - and retire to your nearly-bare trophy room, where Wilhelm compliments that terrible picture of Grandad. Briefly, you consider asking your old friend to join your expedition... He has experience in combat and command, and if his skill is as sharp as ever, he'll be doing pretty well... Those connections might come in handy too.

You politely listen over glasses of amasec as he winds down a particularly detailed story of how he lost his hand to a Khornate maniac before asking him what he'd say to continuing his adventures on your payroll. He pauses to mull this over for a moment, stroking a well-groomed beard before he leaps to his feet, grinning every bit like the Wilhelm of ten years past.

"Throne, why not? I know the boys were sad enough to be settling down, and I can't imagine I'd stay on this dull, pampered planet for too long anyhow! Alright Lon, I'll do it - you just give me a bit of your domain to call my own, and I'll even see to it that any soldiers you bring aboard are in top form, if you want! Frag it, as a show of good faith, I'll see if I can't get you a meeting with the Lord General on 47 Pry if you like! Let's do it, Lon - let's make names for the Von Juggdrall Dynasty and its peers from the ground up!"

You tap into your commbead to tell Lucan to prepare quarters and summon your new Arch-Militant's crew. No sooner are these words out of your mouth than you hear a slight shuffling, and the portrait of Grandad slips aside, revealing that secret passage you found before with - guess who - your Seneschal.

"As you request, I am currently dispatching cleaners to... Touch up Messire Hale's old quarters and fighting pit... Errr... Training room. A vox message to Messire von Markus' estate is being prepared, he may authorize it at his leisure. And may I say sir, welcome aboard."
He then promptly disappears into the darkness, the picture sliding back.

You mention the prospect of making a bit of a profit on 47 Pry, and Wilhelm informs you that this could be easy, if you can make the right purchases.

"Your average grunt wants three things when he's on campaign. Hot meals with powerful liquors, a steady supply of lho sticks, and... Well, companionship, to put it politely. Failing that... Something he can.. *ahem* Amuse... Himself... With. The first two are allowable, the third is contraband, of course. I know for a fact that 47 Pry lacks a steady supply of these things, so you could at the very least get some smokes and some drinks and sell them to the Regiments there if you know what you're doing. I'd be careful with contraband though."

You send a message to Lucan, who thankfully does not appear, about the possibility of contacting a trading house you know about lho sticks and some cheap liquor. Thankfully, he does not pop out of any decorations this time, instead replying with
"Hmmm... Of course, my lady Rogue Trader. I will schedule a meeting first thing in the morning tomorrow - if we are lucky and the negotiations go well, perhaps we can have the goods in our holds in time for departure in the evening."

When you mention contraband, the line goes quiet for a good few minutes before Lucan replies, clearing his throat.

"Most unusual, but as this IS a pleasure world, I have just received word of several... Discreet suppliers. If you do not wish to sully your hands with such material, I can handle it myself. It will probably push back our departure slightly, but it can be arranged nonetheless."

You and Lucan go back and forth for a bit about the nature of contraband before you finally give him the leeway to make the deal in your name, provided he fills you in on all of the details, to help you learn how to deal with the underworld. He chuckles, that rather unsettling sound of his.
"Suspicious, my lady? Your grandfather was wise to pick someone as dedicated to all the aspects of the job as he. Of course I will do so - I will-"

Your conversation is interrupted by feedback, followed by the sound of voices you recognise well as your Voidmistress and new Archmilitant.
"No, that opens up all vox channels on the officers' commbead system! Let the vox op do his frakking job and..."
    *SCRRRRCH*
    "STOP. TOUCHING. THINGS!!!"

"Woah, woah there miss! Say, this is a mighty fine foot - would you like it back?"
"J-Just send your message and get off my frakking bridge! Vox Officer, CLOSE channels! Stupid... frakking..."

The transmission lapses back, and you hear Lucan snickering.
"Nothing to fear, my lady. Just the crew meeting for the first time - no damage done to the equipment or anyone important... I must say, I LIKE your choice in this young gentleman. But to business - I have scheduled your meetings for the morning, as well as my own. Sadly, I will not be able to join you on your first negotiation, but I'm certain you do not need your hand held. Best of luck, my lady."

In the grim darkness of the 41st Century, new crew meeting old is STILL a headache.

You retire to your study to go over various documents - repair reports and the like, as well as making some notes about the Rogue Traders that your crew has been compiling. No new updates, it seems...

After a few hours, Wilhelm enters, smelling strongly of that tea that your Valhallans seem to drink, his green coat missing ("up to dry", he explains), and a dataslate in hand.

"Hey, Lon. I'm not patched in to your ship's system yet, so you can browse the quick report on the Lord General that I have here. Might give you some idea of how to handle him. As well, I'd say that our stores are fairly well equipped to handle a standard guardsman regiment, save for a few issues. For one, I'd get a couple new heavy weapons - we've only got a few lascannons and the like. For another, it looks like your granddad was fielding a half-strength regiment or something - if we supply a las to every man in a full regiment, we'll have half with lasguns and half with hellguns. Thankfully, we're headed into a warzone, and with a bit of wordplay, you might be able to wheedle them into dumping some arms in with the soldiers. Otherwise, we'll have to hit up a planet with a big enough market in weapons - which we'll have to do regardless if you want to kit them out with more expensive gear, but what we've got should be familiar to any soldier."

    >> Dorn 01/08/11(Sat)19:33 No.13446864
Wilhelm's dataslate has on it the scowling, heavily scarred face of a balding old man - one of his eyes is entirely milk-white, surrounded by burn scars, and his nose looks to have been broken several times over. This, the slate informs you, is Lord General Marcus Constantine. Born, Tranch. Entered military service at age 14 (lied about age). Commissioned at age 19 due to service record and multiple vacancies. Current age: 78 Terran Standard Years. Has seen combat on his homeworld, 47 Pry, and countless other battlefields - all of them Imperial Pacifications. Never misses religious service, and does not tolerate such behaviour among his subordinates. Currently in command of a sizeable portion of the forces on 47 Pry. Currently stationed at: Zone Vermillion, Medical Aid Station 14 (Injury: flak round to leg).

Current Objectives: Seize Strategic Point Delta to allow for reinforcements (as of last I saw him, about a Terran Standard month ago)

Wilhelm nods his agreement before departing, whistling to himself an old Imperial battle song.

You quickly peruse the records of 47 Pry, having never heard of the place (and with good reason, since my notes when I began all this got cluttered, confused, and crashed two things together, creating this world!)

So named because of its relative proximity to the gas giant Pry and the orbiting station of 41 Pry, 47 Pry was the fruits of the conquest of a Rogue Trader whose name seems to have been scrubbed out of every record due to the planet's fate. Before it could ever even be logged with the Administratum as settled, this small agri-world turned against its Imperial masters, hanging the leaders of the Administratum and taking up armed revolt. Imperial forces have only amassed there in a large way in the past ten years or so, but the defenders are tightly dug in, and the terrain is mostly wilderness, giving their hit-and-run tactics the advantage. Though the Imperial Navy is dominating the battlefield in space, a few incidents of raiders emerging from warp to wreak havoc on the fleet before being destroyed is not unheard of, and the battle rages on, consuming lives with considerable speed.
    >> Dorn 01/08/11(Sat)19:57 No.13447150
All matters for the evening taken care of, you wash up and retire to the sector's bounciest bed to try and get some sleep before your first big foray into negotiation and trade in the morning, and your departure towards 47 Pry. In one fell swoop, you've netted a possible profit, a new arch-militant, and a potential battleforce to call your own. Not a bad day, as far as the job goes.

At this point, I'm going to have to beg off, lords and ladies. I'm still getting over something that did a number on me, and the Lovely Lady has insisted I get some sleep at some point tonight.
