I'm not a huge fan of the alternate Court systems in general. They're interesting counterparts to the Seasonal courts, but I'm just not sure they tie into the core themes quite so well. Dusk and Dawn are the exception as they're both transitional states, from day to night and back again, so they're pretty thematic. But compared to the Seasonals, they always felt a little restrictive.

To sum them up, they don't really believe in hiding like the seasonal courts do, but rather wish to actively fight back. The dusk court is a court of fatalists, believing that they cannot win, and might as well go out with a bang, hurting the Fae as much as they can. The Dawn believes that they can win, but not as they are, and so they try to bring widespread changes to the lost society, which of course draws a lot of hate from non-dawns, since change inflicts lots of clarity damage.

Another question regarding pledges, do boons from different pledges stack? I started with 1 dot of resources, got a 2 dot boon out of one pledge and a 3 dot boon out of another, put both into resources. Do I really have resources 5 for a week now, or did I overlook some rule?

Honestly, OP, the pledge system gets a bit murky and confusing in parts but my understanding is exactly like yours so I'm going to advise you to keep on keepin' on. This is also why I don't play the favour/pledge game often. It can be a bit too much at times. but if this isn't the case, then just houserule it as such. It's not like you're the first (or last) to make a Changeling houserule.

They do, yes, though the exact methods and philosophies will vary depending on the current King or Queen of Summer. Some will advocate an aggressive defense, systematically hunting down and killing Fetches, Privateers, and Loyalists who enter the Freehold's domain but otherwise staying back, while others will deliberately go out into the Hedge and try to hunt down anything there they think might be a threat. In cases like this I feel like they ought not stack, because it'd be all too easy to just pile points into something and abuse it.
Of course, then the ST can get into the pledges striking back - Faerie rules aren't necessarily going to accept being bent or broken lying down. Which I like, because it's simultaneously true to the setting, and clamps down on asshattery right quick.

Winter can be cool, but I find at times they can seem a little too passive - too willing to hide in mortality rather than get involved with the game. They work better when given a secret police/inquisition slant - their paranoia means that they constantly watch for potential dangers to the Freehold from without and within - resulting in the occasional Changeling suddenly vanishing in the night if his Clarity drops too low, or he ensorcells too many Mortals, or he's exulting in her Fae-born magic too much, or does something else that makes Winter feel he's at risk of attracting the Gentry's attention.

Steal them from her. Seduce them, bewitch them, get them to switch alliances or even Courts for you. It plays to your character's strengths, won't really destabilise the Freehold's politics, but is sufficiently nasty - as you're taking away part of the new life she's built for herself - to remind her you're not to be messed with. After all, if you can turn those minds, you can turn allies against her and try to have her moved out of her Throne.

The day started like any other. I was excited for what character this guy had cooked up, as he had finally begun to mature in the character creation process. The character was simply abducted by a Fae one day, and kept in a realm where she was doted on. This Fae realized that Esther had a potential for painting, and she allowed her to paint to her heart's content. Esther was happy here, and she concealed her symptoms from her adoptive Fae mother. Eventually, on Esther's twelfth birthday, Esther's player felt it was important that I know that her Fae "mother" gave her pullup diapers. I'm sure I was supposed to feel, uh, touched? Yeah.

Well, after this affair, the next big event in Esther's life is that her "mother" started adopting children! Not just any children, black children! The black children apparently abused Esther, and this explains her racism later in life. The best part? Guess what the skin color of the other player's character is?

Now, the backstory continued with a fuckload of other meaningless shit that I will not bore you with. I'll get to the end of this gripping backstory, that is clearly creating a character that will work well in a group and contribute properly.

Now, I decided I would roll with it. "Okay," I reasoned, "This guy hasn't made any characters that are TOO terrible in the past, right? I should be fine, right?" WRONG. SO TERRIBLY, TERRIBLY, TERRIBLY WRONG. The game was awkward and frustrating for both me and the other player, and Esther's player had absolutely no problem with any of this. But first, on to the stats...

Sorry about all the "Now"s that I started my sentences with there, folks. I must really be out of it today.

Esther was a character whose only beneficial trait was her artistry. She was a wizened fae that could do little to nothing relevant to anything. The player told me that they, essentially, didn't care about being relevant in combat, and they only wanted the stats they had "for story purposes." I can get behind gimping your character a LITTLE bit in certain areas? But making them a total reject in every area but artistry? ARTISTRY, in a ROLE-PLAYING GAME? Sure, you might be able to get a paycheck, but...you won't be getting much else.

Well, with that little tidbit about Esther's character sheet, on to a little synopsis of the two sessions that this game actually saw before I forbade the utterance of the term "Changeling" at our game table.

Session One (We'll focus on the rageworthy bits for your convenience)

Esther's player hasn't finished describing how his character looks! Oh no! He asks if Wizened are able to have dog tails. I told him I didn't think so, and he got unbelievably pissed. He yelled "NO, I'M PRETTY DAMN SURE THEY CAN HAVE TAILS." Sullenly, he flipped through the Changeling book hunting for the proof he needed. Finally, he pointed it out, said "There you fucking idiot, now I can have a dog tail," and he THREW the Changeling book to the ground. I think I hit him for doing something so disrespectful, but I don't remember.

Through Esther's unwillingness to carry out any problem solving skills, she wound up at a hospital near the start of the campaign. Fortunately, this worked as a plot startup point! The other player was a Changeling, one that knew other Changeling! Being a good person and always looking for more allies, the player took the severely injured girl to a nearby hospital, waiting for her to recover from the other room.

From there, things just went downhill...

-Black character (Mr. G) waits for Esther to wake up.
-Mr. G goes to explain the current situation to Esther and she just makes noises and asks for him to leave
-Mr. G reasons that she would be safer with him, since he is going to a place for recently crossed over Changeling, over in Jersey City
-Despite his logic of her having no food, clothing, money or shelter, she refuses and lays in the bed of the hospital.
-Esther just lies in the hospital while Mr. G goes to settle a gang dispute with another Changeling in New York, which is why he was there in the first place.
-Esther tries to talk with the people there. She tries to use Oneiromancy on a crazed Vietnam War veteran. The guy starts freaking out, Esther seems to look distressed, her player leans over the table and rolls a d10. We look at each other confusedly. Esther's player says "I shit myself."

I called it somewhere around there. It's all one terrible blur to me, and I don't like to recall it too often, though every once and a while, I like to remind myself of just how terrible and awkward it was for my friend and I to play with him in that campaign.

Should I go on to talk about the conversation Esther's player and I had online the night following this session?

I just love this game. Chicks with tentacle hair? Hell yeah. Blondes with antlers and elf-ears? Sure. The only bad side is that it fires my imagination about all these awesome chicks, can't get around to making a male character any time soon :)

So, I finally laid down the law after that abortion of a session. I went online and decided I would chat the fucker up, and ask him what the fuck he thought he was doing.

I basically told him that I wanted him to make a new character, and that he was clearly piling defects onto a character in order to make something that he thinks is "interesting." I received some hilarious responses when I criticized him.

Now, for his character sheet, his argument was the one that so many gimping roleplayers just LOVE. It was something like "OH MY GOD DO YOU HATE ROLEPLAYING OR SOMETHING? HOW COULD YOU EVEN SUGGEST MY CHARACTER SHEET IS POORLY STATTED?" He used all the same old, contrived arguments when explaining all the flaws he piled on his character, though he did have two strawman arguments that I was astounded by.

The first strawman argument was "YOU ARE IGNORANT FOR WANTING TO BAN A CHARACTER WITH DISABILITIES. DOESN'T IT JUST SHOW THAT YOU'RE INTOLERANT?" Do I really need to explain the millions of holes in something this stupid, ladies and gentlemen?

The second strawman that came up actually made me laugh out loud. He told me "ISN'T CHANGELING SUPPOSED TO BE A DEEP GAME?" "Er, in some ways, "deeper" than our usual D&D I guess." "AND DON'T YOU WANT US TO MAKE DEEP CHARACTERS?" "Are you implying-" "MY CHARACTER IS DEEP. THAT IS WHY I GAVE HER THOSE SYNDROMES."

In the end, the player begged to the most level-headed player of our, at the time, three-person party, the guy that played Mr. G. He begged him, on the internet, to give me a chance. The reason I know this is because the player of Mr. G sent me a message saying "Lol hes begging me to ask you for a second chance for him." In the end, it just kind of fizzled out. Since he refused to make a new character or change her in any way, I told Esther's player. "NO. WE'RE GOING BACK TO D&D. YOU'VE PROVEN THAT YOU CAN'T HANDLE A GAME THAT DOESN'T FORCE YOU INTO MAKING A CHARACTER FROM A LISTED SET OF CHOICES."
