L5R thread time. So, what's your favorite Clan, and why? In b4 Battletech Faggots.

Also, pressing question, just how lesbian ARE Utaku Battle Maidens? All this and more, on tonight's L5R thread!
    >> Anonymous 05/17/10(Mon)22:34 No.9885444
They're only lesbian if men lack the ability to please them.

Conversely, men can only not please Utaku Battle Maidens if they're not horselike in size.

This is not related to their chosen profession at all.
    >> Anonymous 05/17/10(Mon)22:34 No.9885445
They're not particularly lesbian, they're just expected to be masculine in preferences because they are samurai.

This wasn't entirely unusual in Ancient Chinese culture in real life, by the by; female warriors were treated as men when they showed up, and were offered the same gifts and rewards as a result (they weren't actually expected to indulge, though one always wonders).

    >What's the story on the monkey clan?
Back when the card game was first going, there was a card called Toku. He was a 0 gold cost samurai, so he got used a LOT. So he got added into the plot as one of Toturi's lieutenants. And kept being used and kept getting Experienced versions. In the setting, his discussions of samurai virtue might have directly led to Toturi forming his army and saving Rokugan.

Toturi becomes Emperor and asks Toku to be the leader of his guards. Toku refuses and reveals he was never really a samurai, just a peasant who picked up a katana after a group of ronin defended his village and made his way. He asked to committ seppeku for his crime, but Toturi refused. He granted Toku the status of samurai retroactively and created the Monkey Clan.

So basically the Monkeys are a bunch of super awesome samurai who embody bushido and fight with GUTS and WILLPOWER. The Scorpion have heavily intermarried with the Clan, and the Monkey live on former Scorpion land. They're basically the morality pet of the Scorpion Clan; for every virtue that the Scorpion must repress in order to fulfill their duty to the Empire, the Monkeys embody just the opposite. They're the best example of all the good a samurai can be.

Different houses within a clan aren't just markedly different, in many cases they're incredibly dissimilar. Two courtiers or two bushi from the specialist families of different clans are likely to have more in common with one another than with their clan member of a different profession.

Not that they'd ever admit it, of course.

As for the Sparrow, they were formed when a rather tactless Crane casually remarked "Samurai should just give all their gold to the peasants and live humbly" at a REALLY bad time. So the Emperor made him and his family do so; his aunt thought it was an awesome idea.

So the Sparrow live in this incredibly tough country with no wealth at all. But it's a very honorable and humble existence. The Sparrow produce some of the most respected storytellers in Rokugan because their entire history is told orally. Unfortunately, they have the stereotype of being unable to shut up after they get started. LET ME SING YOU THE SONG OF MY PEOPLE, indeed.

    Ok! More questions.

    1) Is the Imperial Family from one of the clans, are they attached to a specific clan, or are they their own family/clan? Do they have their own samurai (ie, can a PC be an imperial soldier), or do they just make the various clans do what needs doing?

    2) About what level of technology is there? Obviously, they must be able to make good steel. Are there aquifers for irrigation? What is the sanitation like? Basically, what do I do when I have to take a dump if:
    a) I'm at my house
    b) I'm at a major clan-head's house
    c) I'm at the emperor's house

I have not idea why people care so much for the Emperor in L5R. He is almost merely a figurehead, and wherever a war between clans is going on he seems pretty content to let shit sort itself out.

Its not like in 40k where the Emperor's presence is required and he has a huge effect on everything. Its more like Romance of the Three Kingdoms where the Emperor rules in name only and everyone is either like Cao Cao, Liu Bei, or Sun Quan and are free to do whatever the fuck they please.

There are a couple of Imperial families; the Seppun are the most well known. I *think* they have their own schools and techniques, though I'm not positive. They're not a part of any Great or Minor Clan, just separate families.

As for the tech level, well, they have gunpowder, but it's highly illegal for anything but fireworks. Otherwise it's horses and melee weapons. So, I guess, champerpots for your bodily functions.

Earlier in that thread, people were talking about how the Tsuruchi Archer is lolwtfbroken due to their many free raises and having everything dependent upon the Air Ring.

I was wondering how the other types fare. Like Yoritomo Bushi and such. Though I like the Mantis archery in the card game, it's actually not my favorite form of warfare RP wise. Not that I'm a huge minmaxer, but were I ever to play an L5R game, and I'd certainly like to, some degree of combat efficacy is the most fun way to play.

I wonder how often combat that doesn't involve dueling occurs. I guess it's ST dependent, but how often do you face threats from, say, the Shadowlands, or enemies you don't have to use Iaijutsu to face?

The last time I went there, it started raining and mouths sprouted wherever the rain fell.

Do you know what it feels like to see a drop of water fall on your hand before carving a twisted, ululating, toothy maw in the center of your palm as it runs off?

The Weapon of Choice for most samurai is the Katana. There are a few exceptions, the Shiba like Naginata, the Tsuruchi are huge into Archery, the Hida love their Heavy Weapons, and the Moto use a lot of foreign stuff like scimitars.

Great Clans are the heavy hitters of the setting they are all descended from the Kami, the children of the Lady Sun and Lord Moon.

Crab: Their duty is to defend the Empire from the Shadowlands. They built a big ass wall and fight goblins and oni and all sorts of crazy shit that comes out of the Shadowlands. They are well known for their rough manners and incredible resilience.

Crane: They are the guardians of Rokugan's culture. Most of the traditions were thought up by the Crane. They have been the Left Hand of the Emperor since the first Emperor married a Crane and most Emperors continued the tradition. They are well known for their wealth and skill at dueling.

Dragon: The Dragon are mystics that live in the mountains. They like to speak in riddles and generally do things differently than the rest of the Empire. Their founder created an order of tattooed monks that got all sorts of cool powers from their magic tattoos, like breathing fire if they have a dragon tattoo. Their warriors duel wield and their priest are also alchemists.

Lion: The Lion are the Right Hand of the Emperor. They have the biggest armies and some of the fiercest warriors. They are among the most honorable samurai in all of Rokugan and draw their strength from powerful connections to their ancestors.

Mantis: They are the new kids on the block. Their daimyo had the cojones to hold Rokugan for ransom in order to secure great clan status for his minor clan. Since then they have absorbed several allied minor clans. They are a seafaring clan that by law controls all the of Rokugan's Oceans. Their trademark is the use of peasant weapons, that way if they loose a weapon while fighting at sea it is not a large loss.

Phoenix: The Phoenix are the masters of magic. One of their founders, Isawa, basically invented magic. The family of their Kami, Shiba, are known for their excellent skills as bodyguards.

Scorpion: The Scorpion are the Emperor's Underhand. They look into the dark underbelly of the Empire and defend it there. They are sneaky bastards without an ounce of honor. Also Ninjas.

Unicorn: The Unicorn were originally the Ki-Rin Clan. They left to explore the world and returned after several hundred years full of gai-jin knowledge. They also have the best cavalry in the Empire.

Lastly the Spider are the evil clan. They were found by one of the setting's BBEGs, Daigotsu. They follow the god of evil and seek to corrupt the Empire.

LET ME TELL YOU THE STORY OF MY CLAN
THIS IS GONNA TAKE A WHILE, SO I SUGGEST YOU SIT ON YOUR CAN

Now this is a story, all about how our clan got flipped, turned upside down,
And I'd like to take a minute, just sit and don't complain,
And I'll tell you how we became the stewards of Golden Sun Plains

In Crane territory, born and raised, in the council's where Suzume spent most of his days,
Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool
And all talkin' some economics to some Crane fools

When a couple of Crabs that were up to no good,
Started makin' trouble in their neighborhood.
Suzume said one little thing and the Emperor got scared,
He said "You're movin' with your clan to Golden Sun Plains."

Suzume whistled for retainers and when they came near,
Their armor was ragged and they had lice in their hair
If anything, he could say those Samurai were plain
But he thought "Naw, forget it, onward to Golden Sun Plains!"

They showed up on their new lands after 7 or 8 (months)
And Suzume yelled to the Cranes "Yo homes, smell ya later!"
He looked at his kingdom, his own little domain,
And thats how we became the stewards of Golden Sun Plains!

    Now for the Minor Clans

Badger: An offshoot of the Crab that guard a portion of the northern mountains in Rokugan. They are known as great wrestlers.

Bat: A recent offshoot from the Mantis. They are specialists in summoning spirits.

Dragonfly: The result of the Dragon and Phoenix trolling the Lion. As a result they are the Lion's favorite chew toy. They most often serve as the "doormen" to the Dragon lands.

Hare: The Hare were founded to help root out Bloodspeakers and other hidden threats to the Empire. This has gotten them in trouble with the Scorpion who have lots of dirty secrets.

Monkey: The Monkey are among the most pure samurai. The Scorpion view them as precious and go to great lengths to protect them. They were founded by a peasant that was elevated to samurai status by his great deeds.

Ox: The Ox are an offshoot of the Unicorn. They are a front for one of the most successful conspiracies in Rokugan, the Kolat.

Sparrow: An offshoot of the Crane that live in honorable poverty due to a glib remark by the Crane that would become their founder. They guard the most fertile plains in all Rokugan, but they are not allowed to farm there and the plains lay fallow.

Tortoise: The Tortoise clan are a clan that is tasked with keeping an eye on foreigners. They regularly send out ships to foreign countries to discover threats to Rokugan.

In direct combat? Probably. You're a courtier (or, more specifically, an investigator), you do the social things.

Invest in whatever skills you want if it makes you a happy player. You could always assume that, since L5R combat is deadly anyway, a little bit of defense makes no difference at all, so you might as well get other stuff. And with that party make-up, hitting fast and fading away will probably be your regular style of fighting.

No. Although he's not Lion either. Mantis or Scorpion, maybe.

He was totally Crane. He was a massive pussy before he badass'd the fuck up.

Although his flirtation with the west does bespeak of a certain Mantis like disrespect of traditional conduct regarding gaijin.

I'd argue that Kenshin is Crane, and Masamune is Unicorn. Shingen is definitely Lion.

    My favorite clan.
The Mantis are formerly a minor clan, combining several minor clans to make a major one. They used to be coalition under Yoritomo in order to protect the minor clans from getting swept up in the larger clans' wars.

During the war against Fu Leng, Yoritomo threatened to turn on the major clans unless they recognized the Mantis as their equals. They couldn't afford to fight a war against the Mantis at that time and some (The Crab) were impressed by the Mantis audacity, so they attained tenuous major clan status.

Since then, the Mantis have been the only real naval power in Rokugan, focusing heavily on trade. They seek to assert their legitimacy, as they are closer to the peasants the other major clans disdain and the minor clans they look down upon. The Mantis are opportunists, extorting and providing mercenary services wherever they can earn some cash, and exploiting their naval power for trade, even with the forbidden gaijin countries.

The Yoritomo family of the Mantis is known for sea-faring samurai who use peasant weapons with skill. The Tsuruchi family, formerly the Wasp minor clan, has the best archers in all of Rokugan.

Yoritomo ascended to the Heavens pretty much cementing their Greater Clan status iirc.

Yeah, with the help of the Thunder Dragon, who gave up part of its divinity to help him ascend.

Still, most people seem to think of the Mantis as pirates, peasant-samurai poseurs, and criminal extortionists. To be fair, it's kinda true.

Peasants are resources, and just like any other resource we should avoid squandering them. Do not shame our Clan and your Family with inefficiency. Every peasant you cut down in a fit of anger could be growing rice, mining copper, or bearing a spear against the Crane.
