    Today's subject: Good DM practices.

    That's one of the things I worry about if I ever were to start up a game. What would be an appropriate way and rate to mete out pokemon, ESPECIALLY if my players are dead set on catching certain ones? Should it all be tied to random tables, or should it be at the DM's discretion, or should the DM ask his players what pokemon they would like to see beforehand and plan out encounters using their player's preferences as a rough guideline? And then, what if you throw a powerful 'mon at your players and he rolls a natural 1 on his d100 roll and catches it? How do you deal with the power imbalance you've just created?

    Here's what I've done.

    Prior to the campaign's start, I've asked my players to provide with a list of 5 pokemon they'd like to capture. I make sure that over the course of the campaign, at least 2 pokemon from each player's list appears at some point over the course of the campaign.

    When the trainers are in populated cities, if they choose to go to a training post, and they are offering a powerful capture they've just made because they don't want it, offer some pokemon from their list at low levels.

    Perhaps someone can explain this to me. I've purposefully not paid attention to these threads, since /tg/ rarely actually gets anything done, but nonetheless progress seems to be established.

    However, when I did stick my head in, I was told that pokemon are unimportant little side details, and the trainer's class was more important to the gameplay than the pokemon.

    You can understand why I found this disturbing. What do you say to my admittedly several month old statement?

    How to make up wild encounters on the fly:

    Based on the place your players have decided to randomly start wandering, pick a species that would make sense to appear there.
    Make 5-6 of the lowest stage in its evolutionary line appear and make 1-2 of its middle or final form appear as well.
    Give them appropriate levels.
    Pop up the pokedex and look at their base stats for HP. Multiply that by 10.
    Deal straight damage based on your rolls with attacks, subtract their levels from whatever damage you take with them.
    It won't reflect their pokemon's stats perfectly but sometimes you need to be able to spontaneously have encounter when your players say "Fuck plot, it's time for a new teammate"

    I'd say "Trainer levels are more important than pokemon" is more than a little obscuring of the reality of the system. Pokemon are important (They are your weapons and HP bars and human shields and best friends and all that) but the Trainer classes are equally important because they can make your pokemon better and more effective. Also, the classes tied to your pokemon are HEAPS more effective than classes who operate independently from pokemon. So the dynamic IS different, but pokemon are by no means a "Side detail."

    I'm not sure where you've gotten the impression that pokemon are little side details. They aren't. Rather, the trainer's class and abilities are equally important to the pokemon you use. They work together to create your character. Pokemon and Class together as one player, rather then a player and their 6 player characters they control.

    Psychics and Martial artists are extremely popular choices because they sound cool, but they are both the classes who don't effect their pokemon much, and are somewhat underpowered because of it.

    Think of pokemon as like having caster levels. Martial artists and Psychics are like Fighters. They're good at the beginning thanks to extra damage dealing and durability, but as the game goes on their effectiveness drops off as the Ace Trainer starts out-damaging him, the Breeder's poke-stats and movesets go out of control, and the researcher's skills make battles tactically simpler.

    Coordinators and Rangers are a little underpowered too, but they back it up with sheer utility (Moneyfarming and Poke-swiss army knife respectively, and both are MADE for CHA-rape.)

    This is an easy one:
    Make the pokemon hate the player.
    As GM, you have control over the behavior of unloyal pokemon, while the player maintains control over their pokemon who are loyal.
    Pokemon who are really powerful need to be tamed by players showing their own power and being kind to the pokemon.

    An example of this is a player I once GMed in my first Pre-Alpha campaign. He rolled a 00 on a level 45 Arcanine when the whole party's strong pokemon was 25.
    In the process of catching it, they also killed a few of its cubs and separated it from the rest of its cubs forever.
    When he first sent it out and gave it a command, it about faced and tried to rip his neck out.

    It took a while, but he eventually broke it and it became loyal.

    Way and rate to mete our pokemon. Aside from encounters in the wilderness there might be actual professional breeders in settled areas. While getting tourney cred for a capture is the MOST IMPORTANT thing on an OCD trainer's mind there's the preservation of an expensive breed's bloodline as well.

    I'm thinking geographical area vs season vs how depleted a region is. Not going for an exact simulation but having the Trainer's League issue poaching demerits and there be local release programs might make things seem plausible.

    Random tables seem a little silly unless they're tied to WHERE the players are going to be. Also make it a decision between each method. With the random table thy might win BIg but by saving up whatever sort of xp or Plot Points this game has their prize catch is an assured wait away.

    The 'Dream Team' method of asking players ahead of time what selection they want might fold into building the party. Especially if there's some sort of mechanism to foster TRADING between them. Might end up being the tavern cliche for groups to meet but at least it's an in-setting method.

    If you want more extensive rules and whatnot, I'm looking to get Beta out in July. I'm positive Axiom is doing well on the Player's Guide and I'm nearly done (Within the week I'll be ready to start indexing it in pdf form) with the Bestiary. The GM book is all drafted out and will be made over the course of June.

    It's important to note that this means of generating wilds is needed because you never know when the trainers will go to terrain type X, but when it comes to plot battles, Gym Battles, important trainer events etc. you should plan out those stats for the encounters as you would any other tabletop game.

    I see a lot of 'how can we help', though not in this particular thread. Anyway, I have a boring job for someone who wants to contribute:
    I'd like the 5 pictures I'm going to be posting to have the Rotoms cropped out, shrunken and then placed inside one border similar to the Gastrodon image I'll post after the 5 rotom forms.     Dr. Mr. Stark, I've been playing this with my friends for a few sessions and we've been having a lot of fun with it, but there's one thing that confuses me. I think I read the rules governing it somewhere, but I can't seem to find them again.

    What determines the order in which trainers get to issue commands? Do the Poke's go about those commands as soon as they're issued, or will there be a delay between it being issued and acted out if the trainer is fast and the Poke is slow? So far we've been just basing it on the Poke's speed, but I thought I read about the trainer's DEX being figured in somewhere.

    Also, how do you determine how many points / level a Poke gets to allocate? So far I've been using a chart based on the average of their base stats (5-6 = 1/lvl, 7 = 1.25/lvl, 8 = 1.5/lvl and so on), and it works wonderfully, but I'm just wondering how we're intended to.

    I have two main questions.

    One, in the new Tracks of Light Pokemon Ranger game, Pokemon Rangers can use 'Ranger Signs' to summon Pokemon.

    Round order:
    Trainer Actions
    followed by
    Pokemon Actions

    During the start of each round, Trainers have their turns first. Refer to a trainer's DEX stat to see which trainers go first.

    During their turn, a trainer can make a Trainer Action, Issue a Command and Shift.
    Trainer Actions are;
    Using a feature.
    Using the Pokedex.
    Using an item.
    Returning/Sending Out a Pokemon.
    Making a Trainer Attack.

    Shifting is moving. Trainer can move 5 meters or 5 spaces per round, adding (or subtracting) DEX modifer.

    Issuing a command is telling your pokemon what to do during that round. If you use a Poke Ball, this counts as your "Issue a Command" for that round. Your pokemon may still Shift but they may not use a Move.

    If you send out a pokemon, that pokemon may not use a Move or Shift that round.

    Speed determines the order that pokemon move during the round after the trainer turns are done.

    During a pokemon's turn (the pokemon you issued a command to), They may use a Move and Shift.

    Moves are what each pokemon have to use as attacks/buffs etc. during their turn.

    Shifting is how much that pokemon can move during the round referring to the pokemon's Speed Capabilities.

    Now, if you want to have a Squirtle forever, you're not completely outclassed by your foe's Blastoise, though it has an edge. All pokemon gain EXP at the same rate anyway.
    Again, the core rules can always be modified for your gaming group.

    If a pokemon, upon evolving, has it's Sp. Att., Sp. Def., and Defense rise by 1, it HP and Speed rise by 2, and it's Attack value go up by 3, that is still a net total of +10 points to different stats.

    When you consider that a pokemon only gets +1 to a single stat at each level, I don't how you can consider an increase of +10 to a pokemon's stats insignificant.

    Hey, guy, minor unrelated gripe: I just downloaded this here thing, and had a look at the Pokédex. Says Pidgeot has "Sky 7" under Capabilities. It also says this corresponds to an average speed of about 50mph. Thing is, it is consistently stated to be able to move at Mach 2, which is somewhere in the neighbourhood of 1500 mph, or in this nomenclature, Sky 10. Explanation?

    Also, dude, the Capabilities explanation doc. 1000 mph != 8000 km/h. Something went wrong there.

    In terms of issuing commands I need to clarify something:
    The "issuing commands" Flavor wise all happen at the start of a round, but when it gets to your pokemon's turn in game, when they actually do anything is when you choose what they do. What this means is that you are 'retroactively' commanding pokemon when it is their turn. The reason 'commanding' happens at the beginning is because there are going to be instances where a trainer is unable to issue their command while doing something else so no command is 'issued' which would mean the pokemon does nothing.

    A lot of pokemon have ridiculous pokedex fluff that doesn't even make sense in the context of the pokemon games, most likely the result of picking big sounding numbers without researching them (like magcargo being hotter than the surface of the sun). I think toning it down is fine.

    "2.5 grams, or 5 pounds, of rock formed the Pokemon loses 2 HP. The Rock is formed adjacent to the Pokemon and a Pokemon can only add up to 25 grams, or 50 pounds, of rock over 1 round in place of a Move during their turn in an encounter."

    That's probably supposed to be KILOgrans, considering that 1kg~2lbs, wheras 1g~0.002lbs.

    I had a question too, though I imagine it's covered in the pokedex (i'm not on my home computer, so I don't have access). Do pokemon that level up from happiness or trading still level up that way in tabletop? Happiness I can understand, but having a pokemon level up because you handed it to someone else in your party briefly seems like it wouldn't work.

    I only ask because two of my favorite mans are gengar and alakazam, and I'm planning on getting a geodude in my next game, all of which evolve from trading.

    I think the circumstances of the capture are relevant. If it was a skillful capture the wild should be cautious, but obedient. If it was an abusive, cruel capture the wild would be hateful, but broken. If the capture was lucky, and the wild was cruelly attacked, (maybe even a friend or two of its was killed) it would be disobedient. Thinking back on all of the pokemon I've made disobedient, it has mostly stemmed from a lucky capture roll after my players were being jackasses about basically poaching the mons. They eventually gained control of the pokemon, though.

    I'm thinking of running an Alpha game to help you out here D.M.S. but i'm worried that due to one or two of my friends knowing more about pokémon they will have the advantage.

    Ahh, Ethics and pokemon.
    I think we're operating under the assumption that pokemon want to get stronger, humans want to survive, humans can survive by utilizing pokemon, and Pokemon get their strength from being trained by humans. It's a mutually beneficial relationship (if, admittedly, a little skewed towards the humans.).

    As for the ethics of letting a mon faint, I don't know. The practicalities of the situation stand that since pokemon are able to die, you should take care of their well-being. It hasn't really come up though.

    What HAS come up is that when fighting against teams, I have a tendency to go straight for the trainer to cut off the effectiveness of his pokemon. In doing so, I've killed a couple trainers with rolls that were a little higher than I meant. Oops.

    No, its a potential build for Kecleon to take advantage of his Blender Capability (It makes all ranged attacks miss him when in Rough Terrain, and Melee attacks are at +2 to hit him) plus his relatively high DEF stat to create a workable tank/annoyer.

    I wanted to try building a team of six gimmick pokemon in PTA to see if it works. It does up to a point. Nothing spectacular but a little better than it does in the games, and pretty fun.

    Some moves give your pokemon Capabilities. For example, Strength raises your Power capability, which allows your pokemon to lift and push more. Dig makes a pokemon able to burrow. Flash turns them into a flashlight, etc.

    Most of these capabilities can be used at-will unless otherwise noted. As for using pokemon moves outside of battle (I'm not sure if Cut actually gives you anything, after all) I'd say just go with what makes sense. If a pokemon knows Cut, he can cut down small trees or fences. If a pokemon has claws larger than his abdomen, he can do the same thing without having to waste a move slot. If a bird is big enough to ride and is strong enough to carry you, then you can ride him, but if he's still Pidgey sized you can forget it no matter how many times you teach it FLY.

    I've run a few Pokemon games, and I've achieved the most success basing adventures AROUND going to find monsters.

    They gather information on where to find a certain one they want to capture in the gameworld, I tell them where it is based on how hard I want them to have to work for it, and they run into trouble and obstacles along the way.

    It's hard to find people nerdy enough to run Pokemon games, but even with loose rules they can be very fun. I feel like there are a lot of storytelling opportunities its copyright holders outright ignored/missed.

    One of my playtesters is a Coordinator.
    He's a Coordinator/Ace Trainer and between Ribbons and Badges he levels up a lot. He's the highest level of the party. He enjoys it. The contests are much like Gym Battles where he needs to use strategy to win a Ribbon like he would a Badge.

    Also, I should note:
    The GM keeps track of how much a pokemon likes you, naturally a pokemon is really psyched after defeating a Gym Leader's pokemon but most battles are so close, they are quickly returned in order to not collapse from exhaustion. Unless it was a one sided victory, in which case the winning pokemon will be able to soak up the spot light and make it super jazzed and happy.
    However, in Contests there is no way the pokemon will be unfit to soak in the spotlight once they win. Its a huge ego boost to pokemon who win Contests and I've had several pokemon evolve while on the pedestal.
