    "Little mouse, little mouse, rest your head;
While the Windy City sits perched with dread."
    -Lebron James

You move your feet slowly to keep afloat, straining your eyes to see. Nothing but the black, reflectionless water around you and the sense of a yawning precipice beneath your feet.
You treat water, slowly feeling the strength sap from your muscles, growing increasingly frantic as you try to find purchase for your hands or feet in the dark, wet oblivion.
Finally you feel yourself slipping under, the water leaving a warm, sour, metallic taste in your mouth-
And you shoot awake, sitting up in a hotel bedroom and rubbing at your jaw; you must have bit your tongue thrashing around in your nightmare. Blood pools in your mouth.

You are Subject 82, Helen Tanner when the need suits you. You are an escapee from a government organization specializing in the containment and study of paranormal subjects. Your talents include minor precognition, occasional paranoid delusions, and a sentient, flesh-hungry blood over which you are developing increasing sanguikinetic control.
You are currently in Chigaco, where Jacob Walters, an Arkham Research employee you befriended, has promised to assist you in getting in contact with Theodore Arkham, the founder of the organization and supposedly the man with all the important answers, like "Why is a little host to an unfathomable cosmic sentience that destroyed Miami?"
Chicago has also become host to at least one other Arkham Research escapee, with more no doubt running amok as the tide of the strange and the bizarre spreads across the globe.

"I'm getting pretty hungry..." your blood whimpers. "When can we get something to eat?"

You leave the hotel, finding a fast-food joint and dropping forty bucks on burgers. The fry-cook looks at your girlish figure, then raises an eyebrow.
"You ordering for a construction crew or somethin'?"
"uh, mad munchies," you mumble, grabbing your burgers and going to the restroom, where your blood voraciously consumes the flesh. The bread is burned to ashes, but Garfield doesn't seem to gain any sustenance from food that isn't flesh, cooked or otherwise.

My list has personality traits, but yeah, you have all the numbered subjects. Technically, we don't know whether the siren or gorgon are 20 or 21, respectively.

I also have the unknown entities, as follows.

    Unknown Entities

"Slender Man"- Shown in Drawings by Subject 13, indicated as connected with Mr. Arkham by Subject 82's hallucinations. Qualities unknown
Cornfield Entity- Similar in kind to the entity posessing Subject 13, appears as a collection of mist. Can impose its ego on others.
Shadow Man- Unknown if real, may be a result of Subject 82's paranoid delusions, but apparently able to control shadows.
Theodore Arkham- Leader of Arkham, enigmatic character, wealthy, described as figurative, possibly literal ghost by Subject 54. May be of dual 'White' and 'Black' nature.

You pick up a copy of the Chicago Tribune. You're down to about 900 bucks, between a hotel room, food, and gas to chicago.
"We need to listen to the radio more..." Garfield mutters, reading along with you through the veins in your eyes.

    MIAMI APPARENTLY DESERTED, SAYS MILITARY
-The United States military is tentatively declaring an All-Clear in the greater Miami area after months of horrific chaos. Millions lie dead in the silent, tragic aftermath.

SAN FRANCISCO HELD FAST IN THE GRIP OF CHAOS.
-Surfers and beach-goers first reported strange objects washing up on shore. Shortly thereafter, a mutilated young girl emerged from the Pacific and began what can, unfortunately, only be described as a "second Miami." The military is scrambling to bring foreign base-forces back home to supplement an already-stretched-thin army.

    GERMANY DISSOLVES GOVERNMENT
Berlin, DE- The German Prime Minister and Bundestag have officially resigned control of the country's government, turning the reigns over to a newly-appointed "Chancellor," an enigmatic figure calling himself the "Inheritor of Thule." A media blackout was issued forth following this news, so the world is uncertain how to respond, or how Germany itself is responding to this left-field development.
    >> StonerDM !em3oEn8LAg 05/15/10(Sat)21:59 No.9842324
Much of the paper is taken up by discussions of the military's plan of action. (long story short, even Garfield, a relatively naive blood-entity, can tell that they're just shooting buzzwords around to try and calm the populace while the country slowly falls apart).

Of potential note in the shorter articles
-An apparently immortal man was apprehended in WWI American Army uniform while wandering aimlessly through a major intersection. He was commited to a NY mental institution after proving to be chaotic and confused.

-Preliminary reports find Louisville, Kentucky mostly depopulated, with thick webs encircling most of the urban center.

-A giant praying mantis has joined the shmorgasborg of disaster that is Atlanta; it appears bullet-proof and has taken to ripping the tops off of cars and eating the heads of carpoolers.

I vote for finding the WWI veteran. We need allies, and it sounds to me like this man is either displaced in time or has Alzheimers. Lets try to pay him a visit and maybe convince him that we are a relative. We could use his combat assistance.

...And then lets clean up "Giant Spiderville, USA".

Also I'm worried about whoever may be declaring themselves "Neo-Hitler". But settling the shit in our country comes first.

Or maybe... we can get on television and announce ourselves as a "Monster Hunter". If we can't find Mr. Arkham, we can certainly try to draw him to us. Tell our juicy story to the press and see what happens.

You thank the man, walking briskly away in the direction he gave.
You arrive on the scene as the newscrew are packing up/leaving. Several buildings in the area have had massive glass-shattering and a few even have serious structural damage. If this is minimal damage, you don't want to know what could have been.
There is a fair-sized crowd still milling about. You keep your eyes peeled for 18's squat frame, but to no avail.
"Hey, are you a victim from the attack?" one of the reporters asks you, no doubt taking notice of your constantly bruised flesh and scabbed wrists. "No offense, but you look pretty messed up. You get your car from the parking garage, making your way out of town, following Walters' occasionally phoned directions. You are eventually lead to northern Michigan, and the shores of Lake Superior. You park your car near the indicated dock; Jacob has parked his own vehicle as well, a white SUV. If you remember the papers correctly, it's some time in late March.

You stride with purpose past the milling employees; this event seems so chaotically organized, no one has the surity of purpose to question anyone else. You follow a rough, winding path up to the building, a two-story steel construction, large enough to contain an auditorium. The Arkham logo sits in black iron wiring over the doors. Four men are standing outside the doors. One holds up a hand as you approach.
"We're not ready for you yet," he says. "Teams have been ordered to clear the building for Arkham's arrival," he pauses to listen to his earbud. "Hold on, that's....ma'am we'll be able to let you in shortly."
Another helicopter is landing, a sleek sleathy-looking beast of machinery. You look downhill as six men exit, trying to pinpoint which of them is...
    There.
A gray suit to go with his salt-and-pepper hair. He's too far away to see his face, but everyone else is giving him extreme personal space. That's got to be him.

Arkham and his contingent enter at the bottom of the hill through a metal door set into the very stone of the island; like so many of Arkham's facilities, the ground level is the least of this building.
After a few minutes, a few more employees have gathered around the door.
"Alright, you all come inside," one of the door guards says, then points to another door guard. "Tell those god damn slackers down by the docks to spread out and watch the waters."

    >Yeah, even when/if 13 is brought under control, getting the world back the way it was is probably going to be nigh impossible.

"Esteemed colleagues," a confident, albeit reedy, voice sounds from inside. Poking your head through the door, you can see Arkham himself standing at the central podium, flanked by no less than six agents.
"I don't need to speak of the disastrous nature of Subject 13's actions," he continues. "However, I feel the need to point out that despite the grim look of things, THIS," he pounds on the podium with a frail-looking fist. "THIS is exactly the reason Arkham exists. It's time to do our jobs, everyone. It's time to prove to the world that we can keep them safe. That was my reason for founding this organization. And don't you god damn dare make a liar out of me." He swings an accusing finger through the crowd; you think you see it linger on you, but it's probably your imagination.

"I'm nervous being surrounded by all these agents," Garfield murmurs. "I feel like we're going to be cuffed any second."
"You're not helping my paranoia," you mutter under your breath.

"As many of you know, I am loath to make personal appearances," Arkham says, leaning on the podium. "Which makes this all the more weighty. I came here before you as a show of faith," he spreads his arms. "As an illustration that I believe that you will accomplish this impossible task. You will accomplish it, or we will all certainly perish. Now, I'm going to lay out a general indication of areas that need to have a concentrated Arkham presence by yesterday. It's time to start cutting losses and focusing on the people we can help NOW. The southeastern United States is a god damn deathtrap, and we're going to be phasing out agency presence there. California, on the other hand, is in desperate need of attention. Okuniewicz, Wazowski, Fullerene, I trust you've been making headway with containment ideas?"
You hear some muffled words from down in front. Arkham nods knowingly.
"Excellent. Now, Subject 18 is all over Chicago, but the Chicago facility has the personnel to keep a lock on that. 16's presence in Germany has me worried, however. 60 years in a hole doesn't seem to have caused his power to wane any."

You throttle up spectacularly, jerking forward as you shout, "Hold onto something!"

You gun it like there's some kind of lovecraftian nightmare picture being painted behind you, because there is. The island recedes, too slowly for comfort, away from you, more and more tentacles gaining purchase on the rock, large sections of the island coming apart as the organism apparently sprouts up from within as well as the from the waters.

Hey Stoner, you are currently operating on the presumption that lower number means more badass. Unfortunately, you mentioned that an otherwise normal yet simply very large spider is number 96 whereas Winged Angelman and Superpowered Globetrotters are 150+.

Some other things don't add up if it's a powar levelz comparison, either. Giant croc dude being higher than fucking TECHNOMANCER 54? The guy who can hack databases from halfway across the country and control anything with electricity running through it? Pfft.

Also, for a secret organization it would make little sense to have such an obvious way of classifying subjects, and if you find a "new" superpower that is ridiculously strong you would need to reshuffle several hundred subject numbers. Accounting nightmare.

It would make more sense to do it chronologically. The lower numbers being captured closer to the start of the organization. This could also mean they are generally more powerful, seeing as a protective and research agency would go after the most dangerous heavy hitters first.

    Just some thoughts.

"About par for the course with you guys, ethically speaking," you say. "Keep talking, I'm not going to kill you. At least I'm not planning on it."
"Wait, I don't understand something. You said your blood speaks to you? But your symbiosis was a failure, almost completely so. The entity attracted to you was not as strong as other specimens had been observed to be, not nearly as strong as 13's. This, combined with your relatively weak psychic connection meant that it was unable to gain a foothold in your psyche, your own ego quelled its sentience completely, destroying it and leaving behind whatever malformed foetus of sentience one could call an infinite supply of blood. That you are developing control over it is nothing short of amazing."

"Tell me something," he asks, brow furrowed quizzically. "When do you remember your blood first speaking to you?"

Helen rubbed her eyes, bleary from weeping. Straining, she tried to remember anything from before this place. She tried to remember yesterday; half an hour ago. Her mind was a fog of burning hunger. She could barely remember her own name.
    >Damn, son, this is heavy! Looks like back then your memory issues were even more pronounced, and your blood even more uncontrollable.

The cacophony of violence and pain probably lasts only thirty seconds or so, but Helen loses all sense of time as she writhes, unable to control the flow of her own blood, the shadowy remnant of some once-titanic mind.

She can vaguely hear shouting voice, feel hands pulling her to her feet, screams of pain; they're her own screams.
    >Aw, I feel for you girl. If Spider-Lebron had been there, he'da given you a hug. Shit, I'da given you like four hugs at the same time, check out these legs, honky! DAMN!

Finally she starts to focus again. She is alone again, in her brightly-lit room. The lights flicker off; an automatic system, or some petty attempt at punishment. In the last instant of light she can see blood spattered against the walls, bits of muscle, bone, skin caked on with it. Her blood is done burning, but her flesh aches, leaking the dark red stains all over the cold metal floors. She can't get the taste of iron out of her mouth.
    >T_T that's how you do one of those right? Spider-Lebron ain't no computer whiz.

"Why," comes the girls whispering voice, choking on the bubbling remnants of the seething torrent of sanguine fury. "Why is this happening to me?"
There is an interminable silence, broken occasionally by a young girls hysterical weeping.
"It's alright," your blood says at last. "I'm here. It's going to be okay."
A shadow of calm crosses Helen's face.

    >Shit, son! This seems like it just raised more questions than it answered! StonerDM's gonna start a new thread, I hope y'all enjoyed yourselves hangin' with Lebron. Gimme like, four high-fives. BAM! Keep it real, y'all, smoke a bible page or something sometime, we'll chill.

There is a special place in hell reserved for those who post to demand that other people archive threads.
