Hello, /tg/. Let us play a game.

This is the game where we make a species. It has a very peculiar set of rules, that I want you to read before participating.

    >I offer a series of possible choices or request input. Respond with one of the possible choices or your own input respectively, with "dice+1d100" in your email field. The person who rolls the highest number out of the first FIVE (5) responses gets selected and then I state the next phase.

Let us first choose one of the following settings:
    >Fantasy
    >Sci-fi (soft/average only - I don't trust my scientific knowledge enough to create truly hard science fiction)

Ding ding ding, we have a winner.

So it's sentient in a steampunk universe. But it needs to be powered by something. Something needs to make it animate, or alive, or whatever-it-might-be.

    >Arcane (Animated with arcane magic)

Don't worry, gentlemen. Just because this is an otherworldly alien creature from depths of space and time that humanity unconsciously hopes never to discover, doesn't mean it won't fit into a steampunk universe just fine by the time we're done with it.

Now we need to work on what this lovely little entity of the darkest places looks like.

    PHYSICAL FORM:
    >Organic Shape (Has a typically organic shape, whatever it's made of or designed to look like)
    >Complex Shape (Looks like a complex shape - like a weapon or a tool or a physical structure of some kind)
    >Basic Shape (Basic 3D or perhaps even 2D symbols and shapes)

Kind of liked the concept of budding, or even the continuous experiment, but sure. In fact, let's combine the three. They capture steam in their bodies and convert it into their bizarre, metallic mass - which buds from their bodies. The initial experiment that starts this reaction of converting steam into this strange, otherworldy metallic fluid is still taking place.

They cover the insides of tubes and chimneys in smooth, thin layers, sealing any cracks and making the chimneys water and air tight, leaving no path for the steam to go except straight into the turbine. Hell, some factory owners even consider them good luck charms for this reason.

Running out of questions, but let's try this: How are they supposed to replace/improve steam tech?
    >By the method stated above.

Combining all of these, since I like them.

A strange substance that was drawn from the furthest places of space and time, it was originally intended to be added as an additional filter before the turbine and after the steam. It converts steam into itself and due to (with some treatment) being lighter yet denser than steam, it's more effective at turning the turbines.

Of course, only the steam-cants know this. To the rest of the aristocracy who were aware of this new invention, it was just some exotic miracle contraption to include in their technology - the latest fad, really.

However, those are all common viewpoints spread amongst the swarms. Some of them feel afraid, some of them are amused but will torment those who feed them if they are made to suffer, some are vaguely annoyed with them and some just don't fucking bother with them at all. Every mote has a different opinion.

Professor Malcolm Guile was the individual who originally proposed an alternative to steam, stating that it was too inefficient. Of course, a few of his colleagues suggested a completely new and innovative science, based off of ‘electricity’. “Nonsense!” said Guile, “we just need to find something to replace steam!” The search took over half a decade and it was on the sixth year where he was forced to look into forbidden texts for this holy grail of science, this alternative to steam. In a book written in the dead language of a land long since swallowed up by the ocean, he read paragraphs on the subject of a material lighter than air yet denser than stone.

Quickly, Guile gathered the best theurgists of the state and with the nation’s funding and the threat of punishment if he failed, he had the cult draw a dodecagram and beneath a new moon, begin the ritual that would transmute a kilogram of mercury into the same quantity of this mystery metal. He called it the Guile Particle. After another year of experiments and the funding rapidly dwindling, he finally came up with a solution. He coated a large mesh net with the strange liquid metal and named it an ‘Iron Curtain’. It was placed in a steam engine, in the chimney beneath the turbine and finally the experiment was launched and the engine was fired up.

Then, the contraption began to bubble and in a rush, a constant stream of beautiful metallic motes, amorphous in their shape drifted up towards the turbine, rushing through it, causing it to spin with dangerous speed, almost breaking it. The reaction kept on going for a minute after the fires were put down. It was dubbed a success and Guile was to be knighted before the year was over.

A week later, he was killed by firing squad.

When the amorphous metal motes had reached the clouds, they slowly became heavier and heavier – until they finally plummeted from the heavens and landed like hail on the streets. Except this time, the metallic motes were animate and they did whatever the fuck they wanted. Some could be found drifting around in alcohol. Others just lazily absorbed heat from the sun. Others began to wear away and destroy whatever they could find.

But, most were drawn to sources of steam, where they bred and repopulated, budding and spawning lighter-than-air children who grew heavier as they matured before they joined their parents on the surface of the earth. Not that many engineers minded at all, either. Heck, the swarms of them actually made the chimneys air-tight and sealed up any cracks in them, making them more efficient.

For most people, though, they were a menace and a pain and that was the reason why Guile was put down. Amongst most people, the Guile Particle gained the name of “Speck” or “Mote” or “Moondrop”, amongst the more romantic members of society. The engineers gave them a simple name of “Working Parts”. Many engineers tried to capture them to use them in the way that Guile originally intended. Others tried to capture them to try and just coat their chimneys with them. Everyone dealt with them differently, just like they all act differently.

The only way to get rid of these peculiar humming motes of liquid metal was to freeze them. Once they were frozen, they were reduced to the same inanimate state the first Guile Particles that were first summoned into this universe were in. Some scientists actually figured this out and through a process of flash-freezing, slowly created more and more of these more efficient steam engines – and produced even more Working Parts.

In the end, though, these bizarre, individualistic little abominations were running rampant in the cities and fighting amongst themselves and doing whatever they wished with their limited sentience. There were even been a few cases where motes had began to shape themselves like letters, in an apparent attempt to communicate with humanity, before they were dissuaded by their comrades. Obviously, the Moondrops had some alien intelligence behind them.

Whatever they were, common human opinion was divided. Commoners viewed them as pests and unsightly things crawling all over the streets like rats in sewers. Urchins and beggars viewed them as profit and collected them, to hand them into the factories and state. Factory owners and overseers viewed them blessings and threw them into the engines to work their magic. State viewed them as an experimental fuel and nothing more.

One thing was for certain though. They didn’t know everything there was to know about the Guile Particle. They barely knew anything about it at all.

    Fin~

Afraid you can't really stat them, though. They're immortal and impossible to kill except when subjected to cold damage - then they die immediately. They're also too weak to do anything and they're too individualistic to every swarm except to eat, and their form of eating doesn't hurt anyone.

    Liked it a bunch.

    However, just to be nitpicky:
    * Motes are freaky >>9783014
    * There wasn't any mention of shape. Fucking cats. Though you did an excellent job with the amorphous quality.

I swear, these create-a-species threads create solid gold. I mean, they won't always go well, but when they do, you get things like steampunk mercury nanobot cats, or HELLTREE.

My three favourites have to be:
    - Demonweb Spiders, a species of fancy cloth constructs that are absolutely huge and look like spiders and are one part comical entertainer and one part philosophical ponderer. Also serve Lolth and are naively evil.
    - The Quadriad: Four fucking crazy Abrahamic angels of justice with eight wings, no head, three mouths, one eye and crab arms instead of legs who punish those who commit genocide and inspire heroism in the pure hearted.
    - Light bees from the Id. Do I need to say any more?

    - Demonweb Spiders
    - RAEP
    - Apisentia
    - The Quadriad

They're made of mercury. That shit's poisonous.

Not mercury, liquid metal. It may or may not be poisonous.

Heavy metals are generally poisonous by default.
