It is dawn. You've gotten a good night's rest, blinked the sleep out of bleary eyes, and pulled on your heavy armor, ready for action. Your utility belt holds four batarangs, five low-quality thermite grenades, and four good ones. Your backpack is stocked with twelve leather-bound giant potions, for quick and easy use. On top of that, you've got your arc light, the speaker box, and a fully-charged magelock to power them. Your tungsten-ceramic shield has been enchanted with a durability enhancement, and a low-power light field.

The soldiers take great pleasure in addressing you by your new rank, as does Ilian. Kel regrets not being able to accompany you, but is as understanding as usual. Still, morale is high, and no one doubts your resolve. As the forge god puts it, “If you and them wizards can put down all of these beasts, maybe we can all get out of this nightmare.”

Travel time to the nearest hostile fortress is about four and a half days. Ready, Captain?

You'd almost forgotten how... boring travel usually is. After getting used to teleporting everywhere, going on an actual walk seems odd. Nonetheless, you trudge on, crossing the untouched hills, seeing the faint lights of towns and villages peeking through the distant trees. They remind you of home, so far away.

You keep in infrequent contact with the pantheon, relaying anything of interest, passing the time with idle conversation. Siskiv has healed up, and was extraordinarily furious that you managed to put yourself in a situation where he is forbidden from helping you by his own government. Bem, stuck in New Aarmour for the duration, has set up an unofficial gambling hall in one of the taverns, with your protection squad as bouncers and gophers. The College has successfully reproduced your Faraday disk, and is almost finished constructing a larger model powered by a waterwheel.

Reassured that progress continues regardless of where you are, you make it to the edge of the fog, hoping you're not walking into a second death.

The Conclave contacts you as soon as you reach the perimeter. Voice two informs you that your first task is to walk a short distance into the fog, and report on anything unusual that you see, hear, or experience in the next two hours. You'll be monitored for effects during this time, and if things go south, you'll be ordered to retreat to a safe distance. Under no circumstances are you to enter the no-scry zone.

    Simple.

As soon as you pass through the wall of mist, you receive a short message from Helia, the goddess of stone. Faint vibrations at the edge of the anti-scrying field. Looks like you were right.

    Orders?

There is a pattern, an infinite repetition of highs and lows, like the same three notes playing over and over.

Helia doesn't think much of it. “It's a bit creepy, but it doesn't sound like any language I know. More like waves crashing against the shore.”

    >>9693211
Since the vibrations started as soon as you entered the fog, it's safe to say that it knows you're here. If it was moving, the anti-scrying field would move with it, though.

DM, said that the creature is a gigantic worm, like the ones from Dune. But it has three red shards (or something like that) on it. Now, why would a worm-like creature need those? They cannot possibly be eyes as it does not need them.
Methinks that it's Forusian shenanigans, maybe they use it to control it or summon it or maybe they are the source of the anti0scry field

Three glowing green eyes at the top.
The glowing and the green-ness indicate it is aligned with Earth magic.

I think they are magic eyes that allow it to see through dirt, so it can look up at enemies or prey while burrowing under them.

You head further in, staying alert and moving carefully, making sure to look where you put your feet. In conditions like this, there could be a gigantic pit right in front of your face and you wouldn't have a clue.

Helia reports no change in the vibrations, and no additional tremors, so you chalk that one up to hallucination or... something else. Distant thunder probably wouldn't shake the ground out here, you reason. You appraise the Conclave of the situation, and the third voice tells you to continue on. With fog surrounding you completely, you're making good use of your 'compass sense' to keep your bearings.

You continue on, the hand not holding your shield fiddling nervously with the grenades hanging from your belt. You stumble over a rather large root, using your shield to steady yourself, and slow down, wondering idly why there would be roots that big in the middle of a grassland. The Conclave doesn't seem to think it's of any consequence.

After tripping twice more, you reach the edge of the field, pulling back a bit as the connection grows fuzzy. In the absence of anything better to do, you try to match the tremor pattern with your feet, amused at how stupid you must look. The vibrations are barely audible now, and you have no trouble stamping out that easy, three-note pattern. Once you've done so, the tremors stop.

    The connection crackles. “Captain?”

Okay, the LSD fog means we're now playing a game with SAN effects.
So we don't know that the Conclave is calling now, because why would a magic connection crackle like a RADIO, even when we were trying to talk to Hretmar from the Realm of the Shoggoth Beasts the connection was merely dim and quiet and faded.
We also don't know for sure that the Conclave ever ordered us to approach the no-scry zone earlier, that could EASILY have been a mind trick, some sort of magical effect to suggest to the prey that it should approach the point of no return, enabling the shoggoth to more easily attack it.
Basically all sensory input since entering the fog is now compromised.
I suggest withdrawing to the edge of the fog and reevaluating the situation.

All you get back are reassurances that you'll be fine, and increasingly fierce orders to continue in.

Reluctantly, you ease forward, shield up and grenades ready. As soon as you enter the field, you lose all contact, and you decide you'd better make it quick. You get around a hundred feet in, turn around, and flat-out run in the other direction. The tremors resume, much louder and much closer.

We aren't fighting the main body yet.

I think the anti-scrying field is the maximum extent of it's tentacle system. Much like how the roots of a tree extend underground, sometimes for VERY long distances, but the tree's trunk remains it's main body.

We're fighting a mere fraction of it's root system. If we intend to kill it we should head towards the trunk and burninate the central core.

We should kill the part of it that's on hand, with non-thermite weapons, because there's a chance that if it's part of a larger creature that will still give it pause and keep it from coming after us, and if it's all there is to it, that will definitely stop it. Do we still have the axe?

Closer to 2800 Celsius. But we break thermodynamics all the time with our ice. Steel melts at about 1500 degrees, and lava sometimes goes up to 1500 degrees, and we've solidified both of those with casual ease; we might not have to freeze the thermite to room temperature, just cool it down enough that the reaction no longer takes place.

If this is the main part of the creature, you should kill it while you have the chance. If it's not, maybe you can weaken it enough to make clean-up easier later. As the Conclave said, these things can regenerate, but hopefully not too fast.

    >15

You summon a few dozen grenades inside the thing's digestive tract, ripping its insides with a muffled boom. The creature's thick skin contains the blast, keeping it from spraying chunks everywhere.

As it swings around, howling in pain, you toss another thermite grenade into its mouth, igniting it with another burst from your storm knife. The aluminum cylinder turns into a sparking flare, tumbling on down to join the other. You run, smashing through bunches of tendrils that no longer seem interested in holding you.

The great beast continues to thrash about behind you, soon becoming hidden by the everpresent fog. You get past where the edge of the anti-scrying field should be, but contact fails. All you can hear is the distant wail of the wounded elemental, and occasional tremors.

Looks like you'll have to finish the job if you want to talk to the Conclave in any reasonable time. You amp up your aura, sweeping away the dense fog, grateful to be able to see clearly again. Picking your way back toward the screeching monstrosity, you easily avoid the roots, stepping right over them. There seem to be a lot more now.

Once you get close enough to see your target, you ready your remaining three 'mediocre' grenades, hoping you won't have to use all of your incendiaries on this one beast. With a clear shot into the creature's mouth, you heft one of the grenades, igniting it in the air. It sails in, joining the other two, and the elemental slams into the ground, plunging its face into the dirt.

You manage to hit it in the eyes with another grenade, splattering the three green orbs with white-hot iron as it digs in, diving like a sea monster through the ocean waves. The wailing fades into a dull moan, though the tremors continue.

Well, it's got both a belly and a face full of thermite right now, and we weren't able to hit it with ice that spreads like fire.
Thermite burns at about four times the temperature that the least burnable woods burn at, and burrowing underground to get away from burnable oxygen will only prevent the thermite fire from spreading through it's wooden structure, since the rust is what provides thermite with it's oxygen; you can't smother a thermite fire. So unless Forusian fire mages come along with the ability to control the blaze, it's prognosis isn't great. On the other hand, the area the thermite can affect is fairly small, and since it's presumably in an oxygen-poor environment right now, it won't catch fire and be completely consumed. So I'm guessing it will just take a very long time to regenerate back to combat-ready status.

Keeping your aura up, and being very, very careful, you make your way back toward the elemental, listening for any change in the tremors or the moaning. Both remain relatively constant, but you keep a grenade in your hand anyway. The roots gradually become thicker and more numerous as you get closer, and you think you spot a tree off to the side, but there's nothing there when you look. You really, really hate these things.

The moaning dies down as you approach, but the shifting ground indicates that there's still something moving down there. The tendrils have receded, leaving behind scattered, icy fragments. In the absence of sonar or a massive drill, you have no easy way to finish the elemental for good. So you'll settle for getting the hell out.

Retreating a bit, finding a spot that seems relatively stable, you flex your hands, decreasing your aura a bit and solidifying the fog. A long spiral staircase takes shape in front of you, its thick supports barely enough to hold your weight. You climb.

With the sound of cracking ice, you reach the top, rising out of the layer of fog. A brief look around confirms that the mist falls off some distance away, exactly where you were headed. It seems to be dissipating, albeit slowly.

You run for it, trying to re-establish contact every minute or so. The tremors die off with range, becoming a dull whisper beneath your feet. Thunder rumbles in the distance, now no cause for alarm. There are plenty of roots now, everywhere you look. You enjoy the sound they make when you crush them. There are trees now, too, always at the edges of your vision. Their thorns are curled and sharp, but your armor has withstood them before.

Just before you get through the mist, you make contact. The first voice of the Conclave booms like artillery after the relative quiet of the fog.

You tell them that, with practice, you can make plenty, but you've been stuck with a lot of duds, because you pretty much JUST started producing them. That's not all you can make, though. If they think thermite is great, they have yet to encounter nitroglycerine, let alone TNT. After all thermite is considered a tool on your world, used more industry than in battle. In a few specific situations, it works wonders, but it's nowhere near an all-purpose weapon.

Aside from that, it's fairly easy to make, if you know how. There are only two components, which are easily found. You could teach other alchemists how to make it, if necessary. Now, perhaps they wouldn't mind parting with some of their awesome wizard items?

As you thought, they're not about to send you better gear until you seriously prove yourself. Your capabilities are well-known, but they haven't seen the thermite in action, and no one else witnessed its success against the elemental. Once you encounter the reinforcements, that will change.

Yes. Apparently, when wounded, the elemental is unable to maintain the fog, and its radius decreases. Also, its tendrils seem to be controlled, not autonomous, since they started flailing around once you set its insides on fire. Besides that, the anti-scrying field remained mostly in the same position, but the edge nearest to you formed a 'bubble' of sorts, which moved toward you. This indicates that whatever you fought was only a smaller part of the elemental, and most of it was still in the fortress.

    Take this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycerol
Nitrate it and let the nitrated mix sit until it has bonded with itself fairly well.
Soak the liquid up with an absorbant of some sort, cloth should do, and compress it within a cylinder, possibly metal--we're here for something that will explode and work and still be safe to transfer, the dynamite skins we use in the real world aren't necessary--with a fuse that we can light.
    Know what you have now?
    Dynamite.

I don't know if it's possible or plausible for Maya to alchemize glycerol, or to know how to nitrate it if she does (maybe alchemy could cover the gap there, too).

Know what we can do with dynamite? And sufficient reaction mass? And proper containment?
We can make a nuke. Not a high-quality implosion nuke, mind you, and not one of the professional models with cobalt and thorium and tritium added to get nice fallout and not engineered so that said fallout has good dispersal, but we have enough alchemy power to get enough dynamite and enough U-234 or plutonium together in one place to make something as massive as Fat Man. Five tons is outside of our comfortable carry weight, but we could build a cart or something, the problem is getting it to detonate and getting away in time, so we'll want radios to be invented first so we can remote detonate.

    >13, 19, 12, 18, 12

This time, your luck holds out. You pull seven good-quality grenades out of the ground, all the size of soda cans, just like before. On top of that, you come up with two 'potato masher' grenades filled with extremely fine powder, styled after the Model 24. Their edges sport barbed hooks to hold them against flesh.

Your real triumph comes with your last attempt. Aluminum strings together like a cage, holding large amounts of powder in a disk shape, protected by thin panels. Aiming is hard, especially when the thing we want to hit lives below ground and is completely surrounded by fog. So you'd need massive, massive rocks, and porting gets more difficult depending on the mass teleported. We can TRY it, but we'd need to get rocks massive enough and high enough to be in the WMD range, and the gods are unwilling to experiment with their precious reserves of energy when every ounce of it is currently needed and being used to 'port infantry, which HAS been successful so far with no experimentation needed.

Rods from LITERAL gods is fucking hilarious, though.

    >Fallout alone is enough a reason to not delve into this area.
What did a videogame series ever do to anybody?
...or are you by chance referring to radioactive fallout.
Radioactive fallout, something that was mostly short-term and only affected things within the blast radius of the first nukes, until we specifically enriched and engineered it into our weapons to make them more likely to kill enemy soldiers and civilians and to make them capable of affecting enemy bunkers, so we had to make a whole LOT of fallout when very little would be made by a normal nuke in the hopes of penetrating Faraday-cage-lined bunkers, because there was no way in hell a plain simple vanilla explosive nuke would damage them?

Fallout isn't an unwanted side effect. For most military purposes these days, it is the main course. We'd have to work harder, in fact we would have to work very, VERY hard, to get decent fallout in our weapons. It is, in fact, the main difficulty with designing a modern nuclear weapon. You have to choose what kind of fallout you want, what dispersal you want, how much, etc.

Containing and/or minimizing fallout isn't going to be EASY, since we'll be making something crude and there's no way our whole mass will go nuclear. But it's not like we'd be using the GOOD stuff, either.

    Not very much.

Kel was already told that you were alright, but he's pleased to hear from you, as always.

“You shouldn't be alone out there. I know you don't actually NEED me to watch your back, but, well, you could always use the help, right?”

Repairs on the fortress have continued, but there really isn't much to do. A few of the men disassembled one of the siege engines the Forusians left behind, and were in the process of building a brothel before the commander found out about it. There aren't a lot of women out there anyway.

All in all, things are fairly boring at the moment. The alchemists have managed to pull up some tungsten, but nowhere near enough, and not very pure stuff, either. They are extremely interested in whatever allows you to do such incredible things so easily.

You find a nice spot, set up camp, and have a quick meal before the sun goes down. With your immense skills, you could easily build yourself a house right here, but the elements don't bother you at all, so you've never really seen the point. You spend the few hours until the sun goes down practicing alchemy, analyzing your armor's composition, and seeing if you can duplicate small bits of it, with no success. This might take longer than you thought.

At sunset, you re-open communications with the conclave, and are met with a new voice, speaking exclusively in monotone.

“Upon waking, you will journey West at your best possible speed. You will receive a message from Detachment Three when you are within range.”

That detachment is the closest one to you, split off from the forces invading Forus, just like the rest. They left their siege engines behind to increase their speed, but they are ten thousand strong and well-supplied, with elite mage divisions among their ranks. You should be in good company.

Communication terminates, and a small glowing thing, shaped like a teardrop, materializes beside you. It flashes a greeting, and you entrust it with the very important job of watching you while you sleep. Hopefully, once you reach the main forces, you'll have the manpower required to actually beat those elementals.
