    BlackFlag External Document #100368

    Mission Briefing “Verdant Mace”
Source: FSB (Russian Federal Security Service)
    Deployment: Mozdok (Russia)
    Pancake: Mozdok (Russia)
    Alternate: Khankala (Russia)
AAR: Il-78 Midas on station at Gamma if required.
AWACS: A-50 Mainstay orbiting over Epsilon.
CSAR: Spetznaz Team Omni, detached from Vympel (Vega Group)

    Contract Employer: Russian Federation

Objective: Support the 42nd Motor Rifle Division's advance.
Secondary Objective: Eliminate any remaining mercenary aircraft attempting to flee to Turkey.
    Secondary Objective: Destroy Georgian militia staging area (+41° 43' 22.17", +44° 47' 22.66")
    >> op again !XQ6W0CNp/o 04/26/10(Mon)15:13 No.9444065
Background: Our operation is going smoothly, last night our first peacekeeping units crossed the Georgian border under new orders from an emergency parliamentary session. There have been a few complaints in the UN but the US is keeping quiet about it for the most part, since our Maskirovka has worked quite well at swaying world opinion. That was some good work on the last outing by the way, our air assets mopped up most of the hired air defense units in the initial sweep. Intel has identified the group as Guardian Air Services, a small mercenary air arm that is covertly funded by the American CIA. We'd like to send them a message about interfering in Russian internal affairs, so if you find any stragglers, you are authorized to terminate them.
That being said, your prime objective is to support the advance into Georgia by flying close air support missions for the 42nd Motor Rifle Division. There was a mixup with operations, and the squadron that should have been deployed here was not notified until yesterday. They are in transit but for the time being we still have you under contract so you will take their place. Targets will be called in by forward observers, and will be marked by lasers if possible, smoke if not. We expect some strong ground resistance but with their lack of air support we should make quick work of them.
One final note, central has noticed that militia units in Tbilisi are staging here, at op point Able. A strike their would greatly hurt their ability to police the city and reduce their fortification against our advance. If you can spare the manpower, hitting the staging area would be of great financial benefit to your organization.
    >> op again !XQ6W0CNp/o 04/26/10(Mon)15:13 No.9444070
    HUMINT: None available
ELINT: The Georgian government has been broadcasting 24/7, calling pacification operations an 'invasion' and inciting the populace to violence.
SATINT: Confirms mechanized air defense, but cannot pinpoint locations.
Air Assets: Several SU-25s are currently operating from dispersed locations, keep an eye out as they present a serious threat to the Russian advance.
    Surface Assets: Unknown.

Threat Assessment: Medium. The Georgians are fully aware of the pacification efforts by Russian forces, and are currently engaging in ground hostilities. The Russian Air Force has run several SEAD missions but we are still getting the occasional air defence unit popping up.

ROE: Engagement of military targets authorized. Minimize civilian casualties.

I have returned to the temple of Plane, to pray at the altar of Mikoyan Gurevich.

Oh dear MiG, while not as sexy as a Sukhoi, while not as nimble as an F-5, while not as rakishly odd as a Viggen, you do have the one of the largest and loudest turbofan afterburning engines in the world. Your sheer power is indescribable and your wing sweep deliciously sharp. Your afterburner kick has been compared to taking a mule kick to the back of the head, and your noise deafens cities. You are my saviour.

Plus when the PCs go out, it isn't some amazing moment of awesome badassedry.

Its when they take shrapnel and their parachute fouls, or they lose control for a half-second and their plane slams into a building. No glory, no heroic death, just cold brutal finality.

Very fitting to the tone of the campaign.

We had an issue with the guy who played Sandman, he threw a little bit of a fit when he flew into the building. He argued he should have gotten an eject chance, and Steve disagreed. We thuoght it was settled, but apparently he quit, so we're still looking for someone else to play, although Steve said he can tailor it to 4 people as well as six, so no big worries.

If I'm honest, I didn't like Sandman's player, he was kind of a douche IRl, and he was the youngest player (16)

"NATO fighters were (and still are) often sent to intercept Tu-95s as they performed their missions along the periphery of NATO airspace, often in very close formation. In 1982, when a Tu-95 flew along the coast of Alaska, intercepting F-15 pilot Richard Ellis held up a Playboy magazine against his cockpit glass for the Soviet crew to see. During the 1980s there were many well known anecdotes about U.S. pilots showing erotic magazines and alcoholic beverages to the Russians, in order to make fun about communist moral principles."

Knowing their luck it'll be packed full of refugees from the areas currently being fought over. Two passes seem to be in order. One to identify the target and ensure it is actually what the russians say it is and the second to actually hit the target if its legit. Keep them close together for surprise or farther apart to lull them into a false sense of security.

Two low fast flights, timed just far enough apart to identify the target and abort if necessary. If no positive acquisition is made err on the side of mercy and pull out. Try another pass.

Just looked at the location on google maps myself and i'm forced to agree with you now. I expected a stadium like that to be on the outskirts, not smack dab in the middle of the city.

Still a single laser guided bomb from altitude is not going to take out whatever's martialing in that field. Pair of staggered cluster bombs, napalm, or some other larger area effect weapon would be better, especially if its militia with light or limited transport. Of course getting those munitions on target is gonna be hard. The city defenses are alert and can reach out and touch you just as easily as they could on the deck as we saw last time. I'd suggest a pair goes after the stadium before moving to support the Rifle division while the other pair sticks with the division the whole time. They'll need the AAR if they're gonna be supporting the division for any kind of worthwhile time.

This mission finally goes all out.

With AAR and AWACS support they can load a lot of ordnance and go in cold but not blind.

Hugs and Judge should load up on BVR air to air, maybe pack some ECM as well, even some anti radiation ATG.

Baron and Scotch all ATG and a little short range AtA. Mostly guided stuff for surgical strikes in an urban environment. But also some big ass cluster munitions or even thermobarics to have a last defense against a tight enemy formation. I don't know if Russia makes something like the CBU-97 Sensor Fuzed Weapon?

Anyway civvies will die, no way around it. Just watch the count and consider deniability.

I'm thinking of running a Yukikaze-themed campaign (adapting Air War C21). Players would be FAF instead of SAF, probably with the regular Sylphids to start off with, maybe bringing in the FERN-II at some point (or for one mission I'm thinking of, a handful of second-hand Super Sylphs). Could be pretty fun bringing in the Flip Knight system, surprise JAM advances, giving them a mission based around one of the Banshee carriers, interference from Earth-side forces, etc. My main problem is that all the models and garage kits I can find are pretty large, so I'd have to kitbash and cast a whole bunch myself.

Actually, Gonzo did get in some aerospace engineers to help in adapting the designs described in the book, with the directive to make the Sylphid and Super Sylph aerodynamically feasible and the Mave, Rafe and FERN-II as unsound as they could make them while still looking cool.

I still thing they went a bit over the top with the FERN-II though. I did read an explanation once of how the split-fuselage was supposed to work, but damned if I can remember it. Something to do with boundary layers and shock fronts IIRC.

Objective: Delay or halt the 42nd Motor Rifle Division's advance.
Secondary Objective: Destroy the A-50 Mainstay
Secondary Objective: Hamper Russian Air to Ground missions

Background: We received this contract request, the payoff is exceptionally large, but what they are asking for is pretty steep. You'll have the element of surprise initially, but after that it'll be a high speed run to Turkey. You're being promised territorial support, you cross the line into Turkish airspace and their reinforced patrols will make sure no one follows you. This is your call, Blackflag will support your Squadrons decision as final.

The idea appeals to me and would make for a great story/role play event but...since this game has tried to stay as close to real life as something like this possibly can...i'd say turn it down. >>9498586 has the right idea. Keep your honor and don't turn on the Russians because the world is a mighty small place when you've got a nation the size of Russia on your asses for betraying them. If this was high fantasy i'd be more likely to jump on something like this but real world(or close to it) and...yeah.

Of course this probably isn't Turkey, its most likely the US/CIA/NATO behind this move and this could go a long way to erasing the problems you managed to stir up in Africa.

Tough choice. I still probably wouldn't do it though.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/10(Thu)00:40 No.9499895
    >likely US/CIA/NATO behind this
That seems very a plausible reading. What do you do when your team of hired guns get knocked out of the sky? Go and see if you can hire the dudes who did the knocking. It's what I'd do. And if you DO take the bait, then they have the option of either bringing you over to their side or leaving you for the Russians if they figure they're actually pissed about you taking out their investment.

Assuming the guy you were just fighting is going to deal faithfully and honestly is usually a bad idea. They're not paying for this in advance, and you don't give a paycheck to a pilot who doesn't come home. Taking this job is the equivalent of letting an enemy soldier put a grenade up your butt on a bet, while hopping he's not holding the pin in his other hand.

    OP, two things:

    1) Breaking contract is bad rep. I'm assuming anyone who would hire you would have enough MkI Eyeballs around to notice or find out that you've broken a contract. That means in the future you'll either get contracts from backstabbing bastards or balls-to-the-wall incompetent retards.
And you can't haul any of your Russky Discount stuff with you unless you carry it on the sortie.

    2) Does Steve know as much about tank as he does about planes, and if yes, conditionally or not, could you ask Steve if he thinks a similar game with armor instead of planes could/would be as fun, interesting and playable as the one with them planes?

    3) Sell Baker to the Russkies.

    4) Even if you're thinking about it, I find it highly unlikely that doing Baker would offset all your delicious collateral you've acquired during the game in the eyes of relevant authorities and that it really isn't worth it to piss off the Russkies because it's common knowledge that Russkies be crazy and doesn't afraid of use sledgehammer for brain surgery.

    5) There's no 5.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/10(Thu)17:04 No.9512048
Going with PETS is suicide. There is no concrete operation after Blackflag for the Africa snafu, there is no need to appease NATO. Pissing off the Russians and hoping to get away with it is fundamentally delusional.

The 'half Baker' option some of you seem to envision with using the job offer as a bailout and fight for nobody is a wet dream. Why would PETS welcome Hell's Black Aces into Turkey when they don't fight for them? Defectors are only valuable if they have knowledge or power to offer, Mercs have neither.

When pitted in an armed conflict between two super powers it's hard to win but easy to loose. The CIA has no interest in pursuing PMCs after a conflict. In fact they seem to make a point of befriending enemies and building up allies until they turn on them in recent history. PETS only interest is the current operation and they have nothing to offer you to balance risking a dose of polonium.

Russia on the other hand has been reasonable to a degree. Turning on them would not only risk their rep, but their very lives.

But you cannot tell the Russians about the offer. That would be something the CIA WILL remember and will take out the squad before trying to reason with them in the future. Russians are excellent at handling innuendo and inofficial channels. I'm sure the squad can find a way to reassure them of their loyalty without giving away any details.

Its pretty crazy too, they have to use the Kfir's cannon (which apparently is capable of selectively firing single shots? Why would IAI add this feature?) to snipe off bombs planted on the underside of the airliner's wingroots.

The Kfir can fire half/second, full second bursts, or continuous fire. It cannot fire a single shell as a setting.

Russia controls most of Scandinavia, but is currently fighting to keep the Ukraine.

Attrition wise, now that NATO E3 support is gone, we're doing better, but getting pounced by the odd E-2 is annoying.

The Americans are making a push, but if it fails, they will have exhausted there air reserve, while I still have a good amount left (Yay numbers!)

    We'll see what happens.

What are you playing? A Risk/C21 combination? How are you deciding who wins what?

Sorry...Axis and Allies is more likely than Risk. Harpoon perhaps?

isn't harpoon one of those Assburger-inducing we-simulate-every-nosehair games from teh 80s?

Well I don't know about assburger but it was a pretty detailed game. I wasn't old enough to know what I was doing when I played it in the 90s but i'd like to take another crack at it now. I personally think its a pretty accurate representation of what you'd get if you were in a NATO command center giving orders...or at least it was back when i played it. Don't know about the newest versions.

Ah, that makes more sense (and is a nice feature), probably just a mistranslation or taking a bit of creative license.

    >>9525367

I don't think so, they were "discovered" because the terrorists told them. A Prince of Alsan (the middle-eastern country the protagonist fights for in it's civil war) was aboard and the terrorists basically told them "Kill him or everyone dies" (though I'm sure the plane would've exploded anyways, they obviously weren't observing the liner since they didn't remote detonate the bombs when some fighters started buzzing it. Always build a remote detonator in your bombs).

OK, yeah. . I was exaggerating a tiny bit there.

Is there a verson on /rs/ to have a look at the rules?
