Buy it immediately and play it, just for the cheats. The UI is rather cumbersome otherwise, it's worse than Starcraft's. But the whole game is worth it, just for the cheats.

AoE II will remain one of the best games ever. Absolutely amazing soundtrack.

This game was great or rather, the economic aspect was great.

The combat blew ass. The only worthwile unit to build was archers, as melee units were far to slow and weak.

And the AI, oh goodness the AI....

Nothing like having the computer completely ignore all of your units and defenses in order to attempt to aqueeze through a narrow corridor and attack one villager way in the back of your base.

I also loved it how the computer would do nothing but build dozens of mining camps out in the wilderness.... where there was nothing to mine. You'd be attacking a base and a villager would escape the blockade your forces had set up in a desperate attempt to.... build another mining camp.

My worst nightmare was when I created a few superpowered priests with codes only to have them be converted by the enemy AI.

Oh god yes. And even worse those proton troopers or whatever they are, the weird blobby silver guys. I /freaked/ when I sent one of those a-killing, he ran into a mob of priests, and he vanished off my map.
I then cheated up several of the other kind of trooper, the ones that can fire across the map instead of shooting laser guns, and basically nuked the entire area just to make sure he was dead.

I used gaia when playing against my younger cousin, he didn't know what the fuck was going on. Crocodiles, elephants and deers fucked his shit up.
