    Kills plants, because a fucking long ago some douchebag super mages had a war and scorched the world, fucked up the ecosystem, and separated the plane from the Outer planes. Athas has its own personal Inner planes, but it's otherwise sealed the fuck off from everything. This apparently fucked up the source of arcane magic power, so now it draws energy from life instead. If you draw carefully, you can keep from killing plants around you. The Dragon Kings actually draw enough power to kill people as they're casting spells.

    Actually, I like magic girls better because of the grimdark element you're forced to mix into things. Especially if the girls are too naive to realize the true destructive nature of their powers, and what would happen if they were to slip up and accidentally start defiling.

    Alternatively, you could just have a group of evil magic girls with no regard for the life, but that seems less interesting somehow.

    Not quite.

    First guy to figure out how magic worked basically used Defiling magic, which took energy from the enviroment without giving anything back. Basically murders plants and causes pain to creatures, though really high-level defilers like the Sorcerer-Kings and the Dragon can actually hurt/kill living creatures just by casting spells near them, too.

    HOWEVER, Preserving magic also exists, which takes something from the world WHILE ALSO GIVING SOMETHING BACK. It does no damage to the environment.

    The advantage of being a Defiler is that you have quite a bit more power than a Preserver, while a Preserver is basically a bog-standard 2nd edition Mage.

    Avangions are super-Preserver/Psionicists, Dragons are super-Defiler/Psionicists.

    And there's no way you couldn't "realize" the "true effect" of Defiling magic, as casting it instantly reduces plants near you to ash.

    Okay, so magical girls are psions and Preservers and villains are Defilers.

    If you base the magical girls on the elements you get Fire, Water, Earth, Air. Rain, Silt, Sun, Magma.

    They can fight a sorcerer-king, collect magical artifacts to restore life to Athas and maybe try to find the Avangion. That sounds pretty magical girls-y.

    Rajaat (First Sorcerer) invented magic in Athas. He started with Defiling, but learned to control it (preserving). Later he taught people how to do magic, but selected a few every class to learn defiling. The greatest of his students that learned defiling eventually were chosen (all humans) to be his champions. Empowering them with loads of magic and very powerful artifact he made them into almost demi-gods. Each tasked to cleanse the world of the demi-humans (except for Halflings) but Rajaat wanted at the end to kill off humans to leave the world to the halflings, so they betrayed him. Turning the strongest of their group into huge dragon, and imprisoning their master in "nowhere" they now slowly turn into dragons themselves (while ruling a city-state).

    They send a tax of slaves to the Dragon every year (each city does) to keep their master from returning.
