    >RECENT EVENTS<

    (O) You have acquired a small pendant that will allow you to transmute without spending stamina, as well as a small band that can analyze the composition of objects.

    (O) Kel is now armed with a magical sword handle that generates an ice blade on command, to back up his crossbow and throwing knives.

    >NEWS<

    (O) Bellows-pattern Flamethrowers are now part of the arsenal of Dreamwood. They are short-range, good for one shot only, and somewhat difficult to use.

    (O) Vasian is continuing his work on explosives, but Ames has insisted that he rest as much as possible, lest his sickness worsen.

    >CURRENT STATUS<

You are inside the hub town of Elay, about 38 days away from the capitol. Bem is at the top of his game, after acquiring several useful magical items for next to nothing, Kel is content and upbeat, and your escorts are looking forward to getting back on the road. You will soon be entering the plantation sector, with your next point of interest 6 days away. Cradon Manor, less a town and more an enormous farming complex, owned by a noble Ilian has contact with, and may be sympathetic to your cause.

It has been six days. The weather has improved noticeably, the few storms on the horizon being swept away by a vast, crisp blueness. With no great difficulty, you have continued your travels South, coming to the wide-open clearings that mark the great plantations. Just up the road is Cradon Manor, the first stop among several.

Surrounded by well-kept fields, the Manor sits behind tall, sturdy stone walls, its only gate protected by a guard house staffed by burly, uniformed men. At your approach, the head guard eyes your escorts suspiciously, and asks who you are, and what your business here might be.

You tell the guard who you are and where you are heading, adding that you are here mainly to sightsee and resupply, though you would like to see the lord as well. At a nudge from Bem, you also reference your connection to Ilian. The guard's face brightens when he hears the name of his lord's patron god.

The head guard waves you on through, having several of his men swing the gate open for you. You step through the gap in the wall, entering the manor proper. The noble's residence looms over you straight ahead, its chiseled facade inscribed with thousands of runes. Around to the right and left, lines of public buildings encircle it.

The noble's house, a palace by any reasonable standard, is just ahead, accessible by a long white stairway. Two men in ornate, silver-trimmed uniforms stand to either side of the large double doors at the end.

You walk up, your entourage around you. The stairs, being built for human feet, are a bit difficult to handle, but you manage. At the top, you explain to the guards as you did at the gate, met by a rather stoic response. The first one summons a servant from within the palace, and you repeat the same procedure one more time. The servant departs, returning a few minutes later with a tall, friendly-looking man at his side.

“Duke Cradon, at your service,” he introduces himself, bowing slightly, “I hear you are a fellow acquaintance of Ilian. How might I assist you?”

You tell him of Dreamwood, and he is rightly impressed with how much you and your hundred have managed to accomplish, especially without much in the way of support from government, gods, or others.

Anything you need that could assist you in your travels, the Manor probably has. Since this is a plantation town, farming and food is the general game here. There are books and manuals on various farming and smithing-related subjects, as well as nature magic, and there is a small, local school of agriculture on the grounds. There are two temples of nature, each staffed with priests and enchanters that work with the fields and the plows, occasionally manipulating the weather as well.

What you would consider technology is in short supply. Aside from improved designs of the tools used back home, everything is mostly the same here as it is in Dreamwood. There are no magical tractors or rake-golems, just people and animals doing raw work.

As the Duke tells you, there are several other Manors close to your route, but only one you could visit without going too much out of your way. New Aarmour, which hosts the college you have an invitation from, is near the far edge of the plantation sector, about 11 days away. By the capital sector, the countryside is overrun by metropolitan structures, so if you wish to see any big cities besides New Aarmour, you will be in the area.

There is always work to do on a plantation. Fortunately, there have been no problems with bandits, trolls, or the like, so the Duke has no need of your more violent skills. However, since you mention that you're an aspiring alchemist, he says that one of the granaries could use some repair work.

While it is not the forest itself the grainery will last for a thousand years.

The information you've received seems to suggest that the god is open to outsiders, but just doesn't usually see much good in them. It's worth a shot, you suppose.

You exit the manor, nodding to the head guard as you pass through the gate. You circle around the walls, catching sight of the swamp grove a ways off. It doesn't take very long to get there, thankfully.

You peel away the dew-covered branches, revealing the chipped, decaying face of a small, roofed shrine, barely large enough for one person to stand inside. As directed by the priests, you ask, politely, for an audience with 'Baresal'.

It has no walls, instead relying on a distributed garrison, composed of a multitude of guard points around its perimeter. It is to one of these that you come first, a small fortress beside the road.

This being a big city, you could live your whole life here and never see it all. Around the edges, the 'commoners' congregate about the main dwellings, smaller temples, and markets, while the city itself becomes progressively more opulent as you travel inward. The central towers, skyscrapers owned by lords of industry and banking, all incorporate ornithopter piers and hangars, using the small, fast craft to relay messages and transport perishable cargoes.

The College itself is only one of several, though it is the largest. There are quite a few schools, catering to various magical and non-magical disciplines, but only the second-biggest, the Radehan University, covers most general subjects, like the College.

The walk to the College is mostly uneventful. To see another giant here was... surprising, but you suppose you were bound to see one eventually. You pass close by the central towers, looking up at the ornithopter hangars as you walk the city streets. Unless there is a giant-sized elevator somewhere around, there is no way you're getting up there. It looks like you'll need something closer to ground level if you want some information on those craft.

You reach the campus without incident, finding that you tower over its meager walls and most of the buildings on its outer edge. The gates are wide-open and unguarded, so you simply walk through, trailed by your escort. Those within are understandably confused at your presence, given the things your race is known for, but no one calls you on it.

The place you were directed to is a great, domed structure with a sign indicating it to be 'Building 5', where Vasian spent most of his time. After a few moments of loitering, you are greeted by a stout man in ridiculous yellow robes, yelling out of a window.

“You! Giant! Maya, I presume? You picked a wonderful time to show up. Everyone's out lecturing. Do you have a moment to spare?”

Just ask him if he knows transmutation, and get him to build the damn demonstration device. It'll work even if we're not the one to make it.

Furvius has a diagram of the Faraday Disk and spark gap, as well as instructions on how to use it. With all of these professors around, at least one should be able to get this thing built.

Perhaps repairing the granary took more out of you than you thought, if you're failing this hard eleven days later.

The new materials fuse into an arrowhead shape, which deforms in your grasp, the shapes of your fingers imprinting on it.

He does not know alchemy, but there are professors and priests aplenty here, skilled in both magic and mechanics.

"A minor setback," he proclaims, "One that we will remember fondly, once this city is gripped by the undying power of electricity. Thank you for your assistance, and your perseverance, Maya," he bows, "I appreciate it greatly."

    Days from capitol: 21

Gems remaining: I believe you converted them all to currency, getting a third more than they were worth. As for your exact amount of wealth at this moment, I've forgotten. There are still thirty gems back in Dreamwood, though.

    Actually...
How long 'till Winter and how many days remaining in the round trip back to Dreamwood? We're just going to the capitol for some formalities right? Not as a... staging point for another leg?

Winter will not officially arrive until halfway through the current month. It is expected to be very mild, though.

As for the capitol, you are going to attempt to weasel a noble title out of the Lord of Perin. If you succeed, you'll be free to go straight home if you want.

    >>9095143
That Professor Reven Furvius is an assistant to. Vasian said you'll probably be meeting a lot of the faculty, but he is the 'big dog'.

Oh. And it takes about two and a half months to get to the capitol from Dreamwood. Depending on weather, you should be back near the end of the year.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/10(Fri)22:32 No.9095268
Oh, we should get a letter of recommendation from the college to give to the Lord, that way we'll have better chance
