Oh god, I'm getting balmy summer weather here in england during a time of the year when you would expect it.
It's the end of the world people.

Speaking of giant dicks falling from the sky to destroy mankind, welcome back to Zeonquest.

You are Zeonic Pilot: Jack Bau...sorry, David Lister, and this is the longest day of your life.

After being called off hunting down the Trojan Horse, you were sent up to chilly Canada to deal with a major Federation push, backed by a pair of ace mobile suit squads.
Last night you killed their night fighting specialist.
This morning you tangled with the rest of his team.
At lunchtime you killed the other squads hit and run specialist whilst defending Smokey Lake.
    They attacked Fort Saskatchewan.

And then something happened that nobody was expecting.

    Decent weather.

Which means: How much Federation planes exactly?

With decent skies, the tactical situation has changed in your favour.
The local sector commander: Captain Salinca immiediately scrambled all of his available air assets, including two Gaw assault planes and a Fat Uncle Transport which he's sending your way.

They should arrive in about an hour, depending on how heavy the enemy AA and CAP are in your area.

If we're looking to defend an area and have time to prepare, set up some booby traps.

About the same as there were before, the Feds still have a large surplus of SAM missiles, so Zeonic planes using radar to navigate through bad weather are shot down over the enemy lines.

Still, it's likely that they'll throw in their reserves anyway since they know we aren't going to pass up this chance.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/10(Fri)12:30 No.9085364
So, Nachtmaren will redeploy to Fort Saskatchewan? What about the second attack going on further west? If I remember correctly, there were a total of three prongs to the Federation attack. The one we met, the one centered on the main line at Fort Saskatchewan, and a thirf to the west. Is that still correct?

    As an aside:

Apologised, when will we have the next Soldiers of Sorrow thread?

I came up with an idea for an early war Zeon Earth Attack Force list...

To repeat the end of last weeks sessions:

    >"Damn good to hear from you. With you securing the town, that's a whole lot less of enemy forces to worry about. We had to retreat out of Westlock, but that's by the by now. We've got clear skies and high cloud cover! I've ordered every air unit and Luggun I've got into the skies! I've also sent a Fat uncle and my only 2 Gaw planes I've got to pick you up! If you can get over here fast enough you can help out Fort Sakatchewan. I'm about to mount up and head there myself. We've spotted Prophet, Bandit and Akimbo in action there, they must be trying to take the fort before my forces in Edmonton break through the enemies harrassers. Well Lt.Commander, I want you to save the day.... again, I guess."

."Bottom line Lister? Get your ass to the fort and take out those mobile suits!"

Explosives in the tree lines, mine fields, tripwires with flares to signal artillery fire, whatever we can get done.

    >>9085364

    Sunday I guess.

    As for the other attacks.

The one of Westlock is over, Zeonic forces were forced to retreat from the town.
The central attack heading towards Edmonton is primarliy a delaying action meant to prevent reinforcements reaching Fort Sakatchewan (which on closer inspection with Google maps, appears to actually be a town. Hmmm.) the main battle is happening down on Sasketchewan.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/10(Fri)12:34 No.9085437
Can we has some ammo? We've been fighting the whole day already and they're about to throw us into yet another combat zone. We also might whish to switch out Jolyn's current suit with another one. As far as I remember, she's using that wierd suit with no hands, is she? And she's running out of ammo for her multi-launcher.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/10(Fri)12:35 No.9085457
    >>9085371

The area has been heavily reinforced by our troops for days (weeks?) if I remember correctly. So that shouldn't be one of our worries.

More important is the question how we should deal with three enemy MS at once. If Bandit really managed to forge them together as a fighting unit, then going might get tough...

    Okay, here's Nachtmaren's current disposition.

    Attack Squad

    David: Pezun Dowdage
    Elaine "Ruubens" Arronax: Pezun Dowdage
    Zolomon Ringo: Pezun Dowdage

    Support Squad
    Jolyne Brande: Gashhia
    Calvin Hobart: Flipper Zaku (recon)
    Bernard Wiseman: Gigan

    Hovis Goddard: Rhinoceros.

You have about half an hour before the Gaw's and Fat Uncle arrives, they will be carrying enough ammo to reload whatever, and the maintenance teams here in town are currently working on Zolomon's busted shoulder.

The plan is for your team to relieve the Sasketchewan by air, your primary mission is to take out the enemy Mobile Suits assisting in the attack.

    YOUR ORDERS?

The only ones left are Storm, Prophet, and Bandit right? Prophet will probably have scrounged up a replacement 180mm by now, so it sounds like Bandit will be the only one willing to come out and play. We might be facing our own tactics here.

    >More important is the question how we should deal with three enemy MS at once.

Is it just the MS? We've got Wappas on the ground and planes in the sky - I believe the question is: How is everyone gonna deal with them being priority targets?
How are the Feds using their favourite toys? Can we get Intel from the ongoing battle on that? How much of their plan hings on these Gundams ATM?

Such as it stands, Akimbo in his Zakugun and the Artysniper whom we've damged a bit are the biggest single danger to our regular troops while our archnemesis' machine's mostly dangerous to our MS.

Okay, once the transports land you all load up. You see two wings of Dopp fighters running escort overhead.

"Watch out, the enemy air forces are getting pretty punchy, now that they know were coming out in force." One tech warns you.

In any case, you quickly take off, and the tech teams start swarming your mobile suits, repairing and reloading them as quickly as possible.
You in the mean time attempt to finish of your lunch, nothing more extravagant than MREs.

Your transports head towards the battle zone, the Gaw begns to rock with the tellatale sensation of near explosions.

"We've caught a bit of an enemy CAP sir, doesn't look like it's too much to worry about, our Dopps alone outnumber them." Calvin informs you.

After 5 minutes he reports them disengaging. Ten minutes later, another wing of enemy fighters attempts to intercept you and then disengages.
    This happens another two times.

"This whole area's become one gigantic furball Lt.Commander, we keep meeting the odd patrol here and there."

"Is it anything I should step outside for?" you ask.

"Nah, they haven't started pulling out anything that would warrant that sir." He tells you.

Ten minutes later, and you're approaching the combat zone. The Gaw captain relays an overview of the situation.

This is a map of the combat zone. The federation are currently fighting hard to take the two bridges that will enable them to cross the river. So far we've managed hold onto them, and take out any Federation engineering project to make a bridge with air support. But they're going to make a big push sooner or later.

The enemy currently has managed to fight it's way onto the bridge, but it's having difficulty pushing through it. Enemy Air forces are a problem, and although our CAP is blunting them, they can still make air attacks on ground forces.

Lets drop Lister and his team on the Fed side of the bridge, from there they can push back to Zeon lines while the support team set up on the Zeon side and lay down fire and push fowards. We ought to be able to either clear the bridge or force the Feds to commit more forces to keeping a force on the bridge, which we can then shoot.

They're BIG bridges. Ideas are being bandied about how to go about it though. But since they're part of the main supply route between south Canada and Alaska, Command is somewhat unwilling to drop the bridges.

    >Is dropping us somewhere on the other side of the bridge plausible? Doesn't even need to be immediately there, but us getting in on the other side would potentially hit them hard.

Doable. But AA fire on that side is going to be heavy, so making to the ground is going to be tricky. The Gaw's are going to get shot to pieces as well.
It's pretty flat terrain as well, so cover will be a problem as well. It COULD work though.

Also, FYI the enemy Mobile Suit teams haven't been deployed yet.

    Okay then.
The Gaw swoops over the river, taking rockets and shells, it's rear hatch opens up and Jolyne leaps out at low altitude. There's a great sploosh and the Gashhia enters the river.
The Gaw loops back, smoking but functional back over Saketchewan.
The Gaw with your assault squad meanwhile swoops in over a famrstead just south east of the bridge, on the federation side. The Gaw rocks crazily as it takes heavy shelling. If fires back with its beam cannons and a great gouge is scored in the earth evapourating several tonnes of snow and sending a great cloud of steam into the air.

Using the cover of the steam you dash out from the Farmstead and lay down a heavy blitzkrieg attack on the Federal forces assaulting the bridge. Elaine is using her 90mm, saving the 8-Barrel for a rainy day.
Your bazooka shots disrupt the densely packed Tank formations and Rocket Artillery trucks, impressive explosions follow as several of them go up.

You dash between the enemy forces whilst they're still confused, maximising your advantage of suprise, you dart onto the bridge taking out a command tank as you begin to cross.
Seeing your actions, the friendly forces on the other side of the bridge mount a counterattack and push forwards. To your left you see a howitzer battery open up, attempting to suppress your reinforcements, you send a couple of rockets their way and the position goes silent.

You meet back up with friendly forces halfway down the bridge.
"Nice going sir! If we can push forward, we can retake the defensive positions we set up on the other side of the river!"

Leading the way, you charge back, the way you came, sending rockets down the way to keep the enemy off balance.
You return to the other side of the bank, and with the support of the friendly MS units you retake the somewhat broken defensive line.

Hovis's shells and missiles begin hitting suspected enemy artillery zones, whilst you properly secure the area.

You hear the muffled thump of demolitions grade explosives, and to your right, you see the other bridge go down.

"To be honest commander, thank that Gaw captain, it completely passed me by that we could use the Gaw's beam guns to evapourate the snow like that."

"Well, in any case, if there ARE enemy MS in the area, there's really only one place they can be coming through now. So you'd better get ready. This is where you REALLY earn your paycheck Lt. Commander..."

You are currently on the other side of the river, no word from Jolyne as of yet, hopefully nothing bad has happened. The defensive positions are being reinforced in an impromptu manner, but they weren't able to hold a full assault from the enemy back when they were undamaged, so...
In any case, aside from the Farmstead to the south-west and the barricades, it's all open terrain for a good distance, little cover.

Attempts to contact Jolyne are hampered minovksy density and the fact that she's under the river. In any case you can't raiser her at the moment.

You start piling on the shattered remains of tanks and other vehicles to form additional barricades, to try and strengthen your defensive position.

Calvin meanwhile scans the area for any trouble. After 3 minutes, he finds some.

"Sir? It might be nothing, but I'm reading three Midea transports coming in from the north. It's got a fairly heavy Fighter Escort, your orders?"

You call back HQ, to take down those enemy transports.

"I've got another group of 3 transports with heavy air defence on the northern side as well, I've only got enough Dopps to realiably take one group out! Unless you want to use the Gaw that's got your last member in it to the scene, but that was pretty beat up last time I saw it. I suppose I can concentrate my forces and take one of them out... which one do you want gone?"

The commander can only kill one group of 3 Mideas coming in from the federation lines. One is heading for you, and the other is heading to cross the river where the other bridge used to be.

Bernie makes a bumpy but successful landing, and you order the other Medea team to be taken out, whilst you have Calvin coordinate an optimal AA pattern for taking down these enemy transports.

You finally receive word from Jolyne, she's just walked up the banks on the southern side, clutching Foxbats command tank between her stubby hands.

Apparently she landed almost on top of him.

As the planes begin to screech down to supress your forces, you open fire. There's the sound of ripping cloth as Bernies Gigan opens fire with it's Gunbrero and 120mm Gatling. The rest of you join in with your 90mm SMGs, and Hovis 's heavy flak adds to the toll as well as Jolyne finally getting some missiles in as well.

But for every plane taken out, another 2 are there to take it's place. Missiles and rockets begin to bomard your position, luckily the barricades are protecting you from the worst of it, but your suit is still rocked from near misses and impacts.
In order to stay alive you keep yourself mobile, and when one of the Medea's draws close you pull out your reloaded 330mm and send a shot at it.
Your fire is straight and true, and hit's the plane on the left. Now smoking from a large hole, the transport veers off and you see something fall out of the back, there is the swoosh of canvas and heavy parachutes open up. The midea hits the ground with a large explosion, smoke cascades from what you recognise as a parachuting Mobile Suit, and from the backs of the other Medea's 2 other mobile suits follow.

    Here they come.

The first beam shot opens hostilities. It melts clean through a Zaku to your left, taking away his arm at the shoulder joint. 5 meters of hardened Steel melts like butter.
The MS falls to the ground, you heft your bazooka and return fire. You see a white tarp shift quickly to the left, but you recognise the head (mostly from the damage). It looks like your old friend Bandit's back for round 2.
His head looks like only the outer frame has been replaced, he's still missing the eye and hopefully the second head-vulcan. You can't see how well replaced his arm has been.

Prophet announces his prescence on the field when his 180mm cannon punches through a weakspot in a makeshift barricade as well as the Zaku behind it. You can't see where the shot came from though, Calvin has a bit more luck. You can't see the 3rd member, but you're sure he's out there.

"Boss! These barricades can't stand up to the kind of firepower those guy's are packing! What should we do?"

You have the support team keep Prophet distracted whilst you do so.

As a team, your 3 Pezun Dowdages dart out from cover. A beam shot tracks at Zolomon's legs but he nmbly jumps out of the way. You get Bandits attention with your own Bazooka shot. The blast is only a partial hit, and he stumbles. The tarp is blown clear and you can see as the smoke clears that whilst the arm has been replaced, it's shoulder pauldron hasn't.

    YOU ARE NOW ELAINE ARRONAX

You swing round in a circular path, intent on supporting David as he makes his attack on Bandit. There's a spray of snow and an absolute cavalcade of fire as the enemy reveals himself from his ambush position. Your armour dents and then tears as the heavy spray of bullets from Akimbo's twin weapons savage you for a second. You fire your beam cannon (still functioning luckily) forcing him dodge.
You jink to the side, bullets crazing where you just where and then you fire all 8 missiles from your launcher as one.
Akimbo is engulfed in a massive explosion.

Unfortunately, the hits have damaged your coolant systems, and your reactor quenches. Your Pezun Dowdage skids gracefully in a looping circle before tripping over what is hopefully a tractor or something.

"Shit! Shit! Shitshitshitshitshiiiiiiit!" you announce as you realise that the emergency back-up generator has failed to start. You open up the emergency panel and frantically pump the back-up lever to generate a charge. Luckily, the back-up then kicks in, and the computer begins to re-boot.

God, you HOPE that was a tractor and not a troop transport or tank you just tripped over.

    YOU ARE NOW ZOLOMON RINGO

As you dash around to flank Bandit, you send a Bazooka shot his way, just after David does, the shot goes wide , but it helps keep the pressure up at least.

"Look out Zolomon!" comes Calvins warning, just in time as you barely manage to avoid Prophets point blank shot as he appears from the gully created by the Gaw's beam cannons less than ten minutes ago.

"Round two, huh buddy? Sure, I'm up for that." you comment as you jink around, the g-forces pushing you into your seat and fire another shot with your Bazooka at him. Dashing to the left he avoids your first shot, but not a blast from your Chest Gun when set to dazzle.
His Mobile Suit stumbles for a second and you charge into him, body checking him, his 180mm spins away. You ram the nozzle of your 330 directly into his chest and pull the triggle. At the last second he wriggles out of it and the rocket flies under his arm, scorching his armpit.

Instead of attempting to get a clean shot, you swing your Bazooka's barrel upwards until it's facing backwards and fire, the backwash catches Prophet directly in the face blinding his MS a second time. His suit fires it's net-gun from it's support launcher like before, but the shot is clearly unaimed and misses you by a mile. You toss your Bazooka and draw your heat axes, he steps backwards and attempts to jump away, but his leg thrusters refuse to ignite, your hits must have disabled them. He sees you charging and draws his beam saber.
Your thrown heat hawk cuts cleanly through his wrist and the weapon falls to the floor, fizzling.
He doesn;t even have time to react as you strafe past him a 300+kmph.

    BACK TO DAVID.

You zig-zag towards the target, it's head vulcans flare in response, as you suspected, only one gun.
You fire a shot at him and he leaps over it. You spin in a punishing high speed twist to avoid his beam shot as he leaps over your head. The suit protests as you struggle to bring the 330mm to bear, and you chance a risky shot, but all you hit is air.
You're forced back into the side of your seat as stop short on your manouver, the brilliant crimson beam lancing through where you would have been.
The two of you dance around each other for what seems like a few minutes, but would later transpire to be about 20 seconds, looking for a shot as you jink and dodge out of the way.
You're eyes narrow as you focus on the target, looking for any oppourtunity, finding none.

For a second you seem to be floating in a psychadelic landscape around each other the eery sillouetes of metal fixtures and clock pieces float about and in the distant the faint sound of gears, The enemy, a ghost like apparition, a one armed figure whearing a ragged poncho and a derby seems to say "I refuse to die here today Lister! and then it's gone.

You fire off a quick burst at Bandit with your 90mm, as expected he dodges out of the way, your Dowdage however spins erratically, with the recoil from the SMG. The suit wildly thrashes around and you encourage it with your thrusters increasing your rate of spin.

Faster than the eye can follow you're wildly twisted around near 360 degrees, allowing your bazooka to spin around and there's a split second when Bandit is in your gunsight.
    You pull the trigger.

The rocket finally catches him directly in the torso, on the right hand side, just under the armpit. The suit flies off, bounding head over heels, his left arm goes flying, his beam rifle explodes in an impressive pyrotechnic display.

The Gundam meanwhile continues to careen until it lands with a mighty splash in the river.

You meanwhile, end up on your ass.

"Gundam's in the river! Gundam IS IN THE RIVER!" you call out.

To your left you see white flare being launched into the sky. With a bit of luck it'll be the enemy ordering a retreat.

But that's not important right now. You and the rest of your team pick yourself up and rejoin you as you peer into the murky river.

"Do you think the Gundam was waterproof sir?" Elaine asks

"It WAS missing an arm Ruubens." you remind her.

At length, Jolyne agrees to go down and check it (after being assured that he's probably not got a beam rifle.)
She enters the murky wastes. Some minutes pass.
Then stumbling and limping, a headless, one armed mobile suit shambles up the opposite river bank.

"THERE IT IS! POUR IT ON!" you order, and 3 Pezun Dowdages fire their rockets at the Mobile Suit. There is a great explosion, and for a second it seems as if this may be the last you hear from Wyatt Bandit.

Then from the flames flies a scorched Core Fighter.

"Oh for the love of..." you comment as you attempt to bring it down. His flying is stupidly impressive however, and he darts into the city proper, darting between enemy and building alike at some stupidly low speed and your shots go wide.

"Uh, would it set a bad sort of example if I commented that we'd get him next time sir?" Elaine asks.

"Ruub, if you gotta ask..." Zolomon answers.

"...well, we got that Gundam at least, so we know it's doable." You console yourself with.

We flat out obliterated a full enemy mobile suit squad without a -single- loss to our squad, AS WELL AS completely destroying a fancy new "gundam" with CONVENTIONAL weapons. We didn't even have a beam weapon.

    Pretty much.

In the aftermath as the enemy forces are in full retreat, you get a priority signal from Captain Salinca.

"I knew you boys would pull through in the end! When they lost their MS team, the forces here orders a full retreat. It looks like this is the end of their advance, we'll keep the pressure on them though, see how far we can get them to retreat."

"There's still Storm and Eagle though, and Bandit survived... again."

"You let me worry about those three, if I can't handle 2 mobile suits, then I don't deserve these captain stipes! I'm considering your work here in Canada done Lt. It's true that this part was a simpler than the rest, but I'm more inclined to think this is just an off-day. I mean, there *have* been fifty-four parts, they can't all be awesome.

I think the problem was having two teams of MS, defeating them in a reasonable timeframe required things to end up like this. I like the way Apoligised handles individuals fights. Let the players handle when, where and how we set up fights, but once the bullets start flying it should be one seamless story until the tactical situation changes. It's more dramatic that way.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

I can kinda understand what with us going against Federation Aces and a lot of plot armor needs to be applied for all those participating, but it's true

the quest has slowed to a crawl because apologised needs time to write up his combat posts, and alot of our sudgestions are being ignored. This quest wasn't as bad as the last, the first time we fought bandit and profit things were fucked. We might as well have not been here

Basically, we need less. Short reaction post to our sudgestions more time talking about stratagies and less time waiting for you to post.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/10(Fri)21:44 No.9094378
    >>9094031

Though I generally agree, we need to consider his needs too, lots of shorter posts require a extremely active watch of the thread and these things can easily go on for 6 or more hours.

That said, for key moments like this, I wouldn't mind just taking one more post to set up that a fight is going to happen and then get the general tactics from the thread THEN write a paragraph based on Anon's decisions, in the kind of scenario that happened today, something along the lines of what was done previously when the group split for duelling aces. You get a set up for each character, Anon gives his view on how they should generally act, RESULT post.

That said, I'm pretty fond of the writing style so I don't mind this being something like a choose your own adventure, but it's true it is more fun when Anon is laying down the combined arms tactics theory we are to use and encourage.

Basically we just need a compromise. Moments when the plot is going to rush by without much influence are inevitable and help the flow sometimes, but it would be dangerous for Anon to no longer feel like his imput means anything.

This is true, especially with the time difference. The fights with the bandit may have been railroaded, (though still fun to read), but I think the encounter with Night worked pretty well, what with the choosing the pickett and deploying the infantry and so forth.
