Op again, just got back from work, Steve left an email, I'll post it momentarily.

I wanted to know if you guys thought I should get a new plane, like a Early Hornet. But since we have the Russian discount, is there an equivalent aircraft in the Russian inventory, that is good multi-role?
    >> Anonymous 04/08/10(Thu)20:44 No.9070789
The Su-33 and MiG-29K would be comparible to the Super Hornet.

So, I had a dream. Of a long range strike fighter. Stealth probably. I don't know. The reason for it's existence?

    Balance.

Imagine a trillionaire who's set up an automated airbase secretly somewhere. Ah. Let's say the amazon.

He flies out, and simply cruises the worlds skys, flying around, searching for the worlds air powers. Once found, he randomly engages into dogfights with these pilots. Dropping cryptic messages and other such plot thickening hints.

All in all, he becomes the ghost of the skies.

Russian doesn't really do multi-role, not the same way the US does (F-16, F-18, JSF).

Mind you, they've done amazing things with the Su-27 airframe, and lots of their aircraft have variants for related tasks - Su-25 and the MiG-23 for example.

I really think the next step up from an F-4, in the Russian direction, is gonna be either a Su-27 variant, a Su-24, or a Su-25, depending if you want multi-role, F-111 analogue, or A-10 analog (sans poor flight profile).

A MiG-29K would be the perhaps best option. Though, be aware, OP, that this would be transition from a flying brick to one pretty fucking agile dogfighter. Also, you gotta learn and love AA-10 Archers combined with a helmet-mounted sight. Or try for a MiG-29SMT-2, which is basically an older -29 model upgraded to MiG-33 standards in most regards and with compatibility with western ordnance and avionics built in from the get-go. The Russians have by now upgraded more than 400 of their old MiG-29 to that version by now.

    >The B-1R is a proposed replacement for the B-1B fleet.[52] Boeing's director of global strike integration, Rich Parke, was first quoted about the "B-1R" bomber in Air Force Magazine.[53] Parke said the B-1R (R for "regional") would be a Lancer with advanced radars, air-to-air missiles, and Pratt & Whitney F119 engines (originally developed for the F-22 Raptor).[53] Its new top speed of Mach 2.2 would be purchased at the price of a 20% reduction of the B-1B's range.[53] This proposal would involve modifying existing aircraft.

    Background:
Let me start by saying excellent work on your previous outing, our satellite followups show that the station was heavily damaged. Intelligence and damage assessment believes that the station will not be operational for 18 or more months, if they can repair it at all. So far we have received no indications that the government has been able to figure out what happened, the official party line is a terrorist action. This has given them the freedom to further crackdown on the populace, heightening discontent. In addition, this further drain on Georgian power supply has decreased available power on the grid to the point that several low risk air defense radars are being cycled off during peak usage hours.

Moving on to your new tasking, we require you to distribute a chemical over these farmlands. The chemical agent is air dispersed from canisters that will be loaded onto your planes in a manner you decide. Maximum effectiveness demands a dispersal altitude of 3000 feet above the fields. Our technicians have informed me that while not optimal, lower release altitudes can be used, but will not achieve full dispersion. The canisters are multistage, and can be activated multiple times, spraying for preset bursts. I can tell the look on your faces what your questions are. No, the agent is not toxic in most cases to humans, with a less than 5% fatality rate when ingested or aspirated in sufficient quantity. It is a simple herbicide, that is all I am authorized to tell you, so no further questions as to why it's dispersal is required.

However, in addition to the chemical dispersal, we have secondary objectives. These are optional, but completion incurs a large bonus, paid in cash, to an account of your choosing. Firstly, we require you to weaken or destroy this railway bridge here, preferably shortly before the daily passenger train crosses it. We have placed our specialized 'chem trace' explosives at your disposal, should you choose to attempt destruction. We suspect that more perceived terrorism will escalate discontent amongst the citizenry.
    >> op again !XQ6W0CNp/o 04/08/10(Thu)22:20 No.9072823
Secondly, we have identified this airfield, as having recently come into operation again. As you can see, the runway is being resurfaced, and several aircraft bunkers appear to be undergoing renovation. Unfortunately, that is the extent that our satellite recon has been able to identify. A low level pass with 360 degree cameras should allow us to gather valuable force reconnaissance, and would be invaluable in our campaign. Again, this is purely a secondary objective, but you would be amply rewarded for it.

HUMINT: Our agents have acquired the schedule of radar shutdowns, and have identified entry and exit points as well as times.
ELINT: The train has been seeded with our version of a GPS locator. Via secure satcom, we can tell you the vehicle's eta to the bridge.
SATINT: Limited. Air Defence garrisons are being mustered, training status progression unknown.
    Air Assets: Unknown
    Surface Assets: Unknown

Threat Assessment: Medium. The Georgians are still reeling from their conflict with the Russian Federation. The morale of their military forces is at an all time low, and their air-defense forces are in shambles. Maintain a stealthy approach, and we believe you will be able to slip in and out with minimal risk. While the farms are most likely unguarded, we are not aware of secondary target preparedness.

ROE: Do not fire unless fired upon, or if operational security would be compromised.

What's awesome, and terrible, is that Russia apparently had a major role in sparking off a certain Asian revolution going on right now (gas price hike at a crucial time to tip the anger into full riot stage).

And in OP's game, they're doing something very similar in Georgia.

You've got 5 pilots OP. Make them count. If the fields are far apart split into three flights. The two flights of two aircraft make the rounds of most of the fields and then bug out. The fifth man, i'd suggest Hugs, hits one or two fields on his way to a fast low level fly by of the Airfield before bugging out. Hugs has got a better chance against anything that field might scramble and keeping the rest of you in pairs ensures that at least one of you will be capable of taking on anything that intercepts you. Ignore the train.

Alright, we've established Op isn't going to off the train and they will split up to hit the farms.

    Possible threats? Recommendations?
I think Op should think about a go for that mysterious airbase. No doubt a low level pass will stir up a hornets next but properly prepared Op could either cut and run or stand and fight.

Forget about the train. That's one line you shouldn't ever cross. Collateral damage is one thing, but attacking civilians on purpose means you're complete scum. Also, it means that the Russians will have you by the balls for-fucking-ever.

Do the farms in two or three flights and try the airfield if you have enough time. And bring some AtA and ARAD ammo, just to be sure.

I like the way Steve's handling the Russians. Their motives are very clear. You guys are basically conducting a covert special-ops campaign for them to massively destabilize the Georgian government and encourage the populace to rise up in violence so that the Russians will be able to move in under the pretense of restoring order in an obviously failed state.

You've already done major damage to the nation's power grid, most likely leading to at least brownouts. Anyone remember what happens in California eight years ago when Enron was price-fixing and causing brownouts? The people got super-pissed and recalled the governor.

Next, you're going to be dropping some form of herbicide on a good proportion of Georgia's farmland. This will likely lead to food shortages in the future, creating massive discontent, rioting, and reliance on Russia for food aid.

Destroying the bridge and the train with it, and making it look like terrorists will also go towards making it look like the government isn't in control of its own nation. Up to you guys if you want to do it.

Killing civilians directly as an objective might cross a line for you guys. You're basically being hired to commit terrorist acts here.

Though be aware, the deaths from famine from crop shortages might far exceed a single trainload.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/10(Fri)01:32 No.9077067
    Suggestion:
BVR missile the bridge so the train doesn't see what hit them. 2 planes do this, then circle back to cropfields.
2 other planes do cropfields continually.
Your fastest plane overflies the airfield and gets the FUCK out.
We'd need a map showing the locations of the airfield, bridge, and farms for a more decent plan though.

However, I am all for never even TRYING to go for that bridge. Drop the herbicide and take the pictures. The pictures will be the hardest part. They want pictures of an enemy air base. That's U-2 work, satellite work. Not fighter jet work. So be careful, OP.

The D version is not a super hornet, but a two seater, op will probably save some good cash with this choice, and still have the Phantom as a backup.

Eurofag just getting up (at noon). Let's see what we got here.

Steve is trying to push your buttons. He is giving you opportunity to be greedy and compromise yourselves. I'd be careful.

On the other hand you don't want to piss off Vladimir, and right now, you're all his bitches. The trick is to be too efficient to be let go, yet not so efficient as to create problems in the long run.

Refusing a target outright is an affront to your employers. Do all the targets, split up your flight if that helps. But make sure you misdeliver the bridge package in some way. Drop it too early or too late, miss the bridge by a little. Georgia operates no high speed trains, so derailment shouldn't cause too many civy casualties. Just make sure the FSB sees an effort. Maybe the terrorists messed up their fuse length, the fiction can still hold.

As for the Hornet, I am not a fan. The Super Hornet is a different story, but the old model is barely better than the updated and retrofitted Phantom Baron has now. Growler or no Growler, that is the question.

My biggest question is this: Will you keep the F-4 around or will it be liquidated to acquire the next bird? If it's still in the hangar you can just take it for a spin when a mission demands it. That would free you up to make a bolder choice of hogs. The F-18 is just too mediocre for a merc campaign, it's a military workhorse and it's sex appeal didn't age well.

None of them will have the cash to buy a plane from savings and afford maintenance on both of them, even if the hangar-plane takes low-level chap maintenance except for immediately before a mission it'll be flying.

Maybe Hugs could afford it, but only because of his mad kill record.

Find a night slot to do the fly-by of the airstrip, at least.
    Otherwise, skip that one.

Drop an IED a half-mile ahead of the bridge as well as on the bridge, to minimise the chances of wiping out a trainload of people.

Paired flights doing the farms should work otherwise.

Nicely done. And in the rule context you are of course right. But that doesn't change the fact that the Hornet was a bastard child from day one.

It was procured as a cheap alternative to Tomcats and Eagles.with a navy hook. It was developed out of the Cobra light fighter project and boosted in size and carry, but not enough to silence the criticism over it's limited range and load.

It was redesigned to address that criticism and become the navy's new old all-rounder. But even the Super Hornet will always be a third grade jet because the entire concept is one big compromise.

And your first link states that clearly, if in much more words.

Which is why I say: A Growler will outweigh it's downsides with an awesome repertoire of support actions and will also fit a strike role, if not with much enthusiasm. Other than that, hands off the Hornets. This is an RPG ffs. Rule of cool still applies.

    >>9082000

The rules don't reflect range, but I'm sure this Steve character pays attention to that. From a rules point, the Hornet E should have a higher loadout then the D variant, but not by much, maybe 30 instead of 27 I think. The accel is bang on though, the superbug is a pig with all it's extra weight.

I was reading somewhere Boeing was doing a case study on putting F-22 engines on a hornet, anyone else have verification on this?

That is true. Too big, too heavy, too resource-intensive. But fuck it a pretty bird. I miss them, they shouldn't have been retired as early as they were. Much better designed planes than those silly Lawn Darts.

The F-15E can be swapped to fit anything you need at any given moment. Need AtA capability? Slap some sidewinders and other goodies under the wings and go to town. Need to pound some ground? It has an excellent carry for bombs and air-to-surface missiles and a nice long flight time.

Cut with the trolling already, cockburglar.

That aside, I find the idea of ignoring the train bridge a poor one. Any sort of angling about the issue, even worse - especially tipping the Georgians off beforehand. The bridge should be hit, but whether succesfully or not and whether in time to damage the train is another choice to make. I'd propably rather bomb the bridge well ahead the train schedule.

Also, all targets should be hit with such timing that the one most remote from the exit zone risks detection first. Wouldn't want to get stranded, remembering that there's combat-capable and pissed hardware buzzing around your area. The airfield should be taken by the fastest plane, and should be first circled around widely, and then crossed over while going towards the exit point already. After that, zoom right out, Gold Rush style.

Hit the targets in one big daisy chain if possible, and do it at speed.

I think you should also consider dumping cash in some of the countries around Georgia so you have more alternates, in case things turn to shit.

As someone said, everyone should have some form of air to air. Enough to deter pursuit at the very least.

Depending on the size of the fields, perhaps the group should split into four - one for each objective, with Hugs and someone else loitering in AA suit, ready to jump anyone who gives pursuit.

But it might be the spray job is a little too time intensive for one plane.

Just don't do it, they said it was a scondary objective, a bonus. If you don't feel like hitting the bridge/train just don't, they won't be pissed at you otherwise they would have made it a main objective, not a bonus

It's not the bridge deal at face value that's difficult, but rather the nuances under it. How they handle it will affect the Russians' evaluation of the squad's usefulness. And FSB isn't the kind of a bunch you should go trusting blindly when you're doing wetworks for them. If they underperform, their evaluation as an asset might be considered below cost-efficiency, and they might get shafted. If they blow up a trainload of civvies, on the other hand, their employer might seize the opportunity it gives and deliver "captured foreign agents attempting to frame Russia and provoke NATO sympathies in the Georgian public" for a very public, and very one-sided trial.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/10(Fri)11:54 No.9084899
    >>9072797

If you do this, get eyes on the train and blast the fuck out of the bridge leaving them ample time to hit the brakes. The poster suggesting you accidentally drop one bomb half a mile or so before the bridge has his head on straight.

And check for trains coming in from the other side, just to be sure.

That has to do with the objective though, they put it foward as secondary, sure it'd be nice if we did secondary objectives but doing 1 out of 2 and the main objective is more then enough. I'm sure they'll accept. Also I think we're in a contract, even if they fail they're slated to do a few more to win back favor

All i'm saying is not doing a bonus objective isn't that huge a deal

    Republic XP-47H

Over 15,5000 P47s were manufactured, of which over 12,5000 were P-47Ds. The two XP-47Hs were simply P47D engine test beds for the Chrysler X1V-2220-1 inverted V16 engine. The two aircraft, 23297 and 23298, modified to take this engine that included a General Electric CH5 turbo supercharger in the rear fuselage and a 13ft four blade propeller. No armament was fitted and due to the problems with the engine the aircraft didn’t fly until July 1945. By this time the war was over and everyone was more interested in jet engines and so no further development was carried out.
