Alright, /tg/, I've started running a Pokemon Pre-Alpha campaign today, and my players are a good-hearted Breeder with a totodile that he raised from birth and a Martial Artist girl with a Mawile that she adores.

I'm not sure how I'll be grimdarking shit up, as I haven't really conceived a plot. All I know, at this point, is that the campaign is beginning in Cerulean City.

Beyond the infamous Cerulean Cave, anyone have any ideas for plot hooks, either brief or overarching? They don't necessarily have to be Cerulean City-centric, as I have no idea what I'm going to be doing.

One player simply wishes to disregard females, acquire badges, while the other wants to breed THE ULTIMATE MOTHERFUCKING POKEMON.

One idea I had batting around would be to mashup Pokemon Snap! with Jurassic Park. An offshore island is being reconfigured as an eco-tourist attraction, where parties of visitors have the opportunity to see Pokemon in their natural habitat, before they're scooped up into Pokeballs and tamed by their trainers.

However, something's in the water. The pokemon become violent and escape, and after the island's transport ship is sunk by a raging Garados you have a lot of hapless civilians stranded, with little walking, coach and jeep parties scattered across forests and fields with murderous pokemon sprinting towards them.

The heroes have to trek across the island multiple times, rescuing who they can and taking them to the visitor's centre where the survivors are holed up awaiting rescue.

But what has driven the Pokemon beserk? It can't be Team Rocket - the company which owns this island is one of their subsidiaries, and they'd hardly sabotage their own operation. It turns out to be a double-bluff, though - this IS a Team Rocket experiment in weaponised berserker pokemon, and by doing it this way with suspicion directed away from they, they can conduct the research hiding in plain sight.

Holy fuck, that is a great sidequest idea, though I wouldn't like to start the group's first adventure with that.

My goal for a first adventure would be to
    1. Get the pair together
    2. Establish rivals
    3. Maybe establish some villains? Not sure if I want to start that off right away.

This scenario could tie into the OP's desire to breed the ultimate pokemon. Capturing a berserker specimen - while difficult, even when penned into a pokeball that ball's going to be bouncing around like a rubber ball on amphetemines - could be an ideal breeding partner, assuming that you can get it to stop ripping apart any potential mate it approaches.

How about there's an ordinary Pokemon doubles tournament, with your characters as partners.

Rivals can straightforwardly be other competitors.

The villains come from the observation, when the heroes watch earlier heats from the stands, that the Pokemon on the field are behaving rather strangely and differently from what was seen during training earlier in the day. The common link between all of the competitors is that before the bout they have to leave their pokemon with a Nurse Joy for evaluation - however, she's brainwashed/ under a pokemon's mind-control/confuse spell and in the thrall of bent judges - she's filling the pokemon up with drugs to throw the fights, and no-one suspects this because, of course, Nurse Joys are known to be pillars of probity. The heroes expose the corrupt judges, and the day is saved for proper sportsmanship.

Not sure if I can start the group off on a 1v1 if their Pokemon are level one. Hm, unless, of course, it's some kind of "graduation ceremony," and all of the people there are going to be battling with level ones (or around there) as well.

I'm thinking this could work out, though I might want to have the players stray from the city, to show them the dangers of HOLY FUCK POKEMON IN THE WILDERNESS.

The two features listed under their class are a package deal. A class is a feature by itself. You can pick a class feature instead of a trainer feature, and it gives you both of the listed abilities, in addition to the proficiencies and stat adjustments and whatnot. Of course, you're limited to three class features total (including advanced classes) so you still have to plan ahead a bit.

During his conflict with Red, some crazy shit happened, and his leg was torn off, luckily, Red had his Charizard cauterize the wound, though Giovanni was in such a feverish state, he believes that Red BURNT his fucking leg off.

The current, vengeful Giovanni, having been revealed to the public, was chewed up and spit out, but now, an enterprising young scientist has come to Giovanni for funding, and he has essentially offered the crimelord another shot at reestablishing Team Rocket.

I'm also thinking that Team Rocket used to be a Pokemon-arms dealer during the war, and they turned EVUL because just about every country they provided to was incapable of paying them, and some flat out refused.

At each level, you may choose a Feature. This is either a Class Feature, or a Trainer Feature. A class feature encompases everything listed in the class description, including both abilities. Class Features do more to define who your character is, however you may have no more than three of them.

    Better?

A "class feature" and a "class" is the same thing. Of course, since "class feature" is really the most logical way to refer to the features which have a given class as a prerequisite (Breeder features, Psychic Features, etc), I realize this can be confusing. Feel free to talk to Stark about that.

    From the trainer stat rar:
    Affirmation: Ace Trainer Feature
    Prerequisites: Ace Trainer
Daily – Every 10 levels gained, you may perform this Feature another time per day.
Trigger: Your pokemon fells a foe.
Effect: You Pokemon gains temporary Hit Points equal to your CON modifier.

    Affirmation +: Ace Trainer Feature
    Prerequisites: Ace Trainer, Affirmation
Daily – Every 6 levels gained, you may perform this Feature another time per day.
Trigger: Your pokemon fells a foe.
Effect: You Pokemon gains temporary Hit Points equal to your CON modifier doubled. This Feature replaces Affirmation.

    Beast Master: Ace Trainer Feature
    Prerequisites: Ace Trainer, 8 Badges
    Static
    Target: Your pokemon.
Effect: Your pokemon do not protest to your commands. They cannot be disobedient unless they are Legendary.

    Break Through!: Ace Trainer Feature
    Prerequisites: Ace Trainer, 16 STR
Daily – Every 10 levels gained, you may perform this Feature another time per day.
Trigger: Your pokemon’s Move that the foe is Immune to hits.
Effect: The Move that would normally deal no damage because of a foe’s Immunity to the Move’s type instead is only resisted. If the target has multiple types, one Immune and the other Resistant, the Move is now doubly resisted; one Immune and the other Super-Effective, the Move is now neutral.

So taking the three class limit into account and applying the class = feature line of thought you'd only be allowed to take 3 of said features.

No. Those are Ace Trainer Features, not Class Features. I know it's confusing. The Class Feature for Ace Trainer looks like this:

    >Ace Trainer – Class Feature
    Prerequisites: 13 STR, 13 CON
Key Abilities: Strength, Constitution Bonuses: +1 STR +1 CON
Negligent Ability: Wisdom Penalties: -2 WIS
Ace Trainer Features: Enhanced Training, Improved Attacks

    Enhanced Training: Ace Trainer Feature
    Static
Trigger: Your pokemon gains experience points.
Effect: Each of your pokemon gains 1.2x the amount of experience they would gain normally. This replaces the amount of experience they would normally gain.

    Improved Attacks: Ace Trainer Feature
    Static
Trigger: Your pokemon’s damage dealing attack hits.
Effect: When adding up damage dealt to the foe, add either half of your STR modifier or half of your CON modifier before your foes subtracts their defense or special defense from the attack.

You'll note that is specifically says "Class Feature". I also copied it out of "Class_Features.doc", which was in the .rar I uploaded.

The names are confusing, I know. Especially for people coming from systems where a class is the framework all you other abilities fit within (ie DnD). It makes sense once you understand the system, though, and I really can't think of a better nomenclative system. Presumably Dr. Mr. Stark couldn't either.

To further complicate things, you can actually have three total, not of Class Features, but of Class Features + Advanced Features (which are often referred to a Advanced Classes, and will likely be called Prestige Classes more than once.)

The use of the word class given that it seems heavily based on 4e just made it confusing. When something didn't make sense it usually worked to substitute a D&D equivalent until further reading revealed the answer. But that's what happens when trying to put together information from such a disjointed framework. My bad.

Oh. You need the breeding rules.

    Breeding:
When attempting to mate 2 pokemon, you must roll d100 when you retrieve them.
If you roll under 25, an egg is produced.
Pokemon need at least 8 hours. For every hour under 12, add 5 to their role. For every hour over 12, up to 16 hours, subtract 2 from your check.
That maximize line implies that leaving them for 12 hours improves the chances because there isn't a number added to your rolls during the breeding check. Leaving them for 16 hours subtracts 8 from the roll.
Add the difference between the two pokemon’s levels to the roll; this is the Level Difference penalty.

Is you pass the check, you have an egg. You may only make one breeding check per day.

That Feature doesn't really change anything other then making it easier to pass this check.

You'll find egg hatching times in this doc.

The bestiary isn't meant to be casually read, only once you've pokedexed a pokemon can players see the pokemon's bestiary entry.

    At least that's the idea.

Everything in the bestiary entry can be read once the pokemon has been pokedexed.

Legendaries are in this version but they will be moved to the GM's book once the final Beta is out.

The hatcher's starting features have also been revamped.

    >Hatcher – Advanced Feature
Prerequisites: Breeder, Hatched at least 7 Eggs, Egg Hatcher
Ability Bonus: Charisma Bonuses: +1 CHA
Class Features: This Is How You Do It, Son, Egg Advantage

This Is How You Do It, Son: Hatcher Feature
    Static
Target: A Pokemon you’ve hatched, within at least 2 meters of one of its parents.
Effect: When the parent Pokemon gains Experience Points, instead it gains half of the experience points it would have gained, then the target gains the other half of the experience points. If both parents of a particular target are nearby, you may only use This Is How You Do It, Son’s Effect once.

    Egg Advantage: Hatcher Feature
    Daily
    Target: A hatching egg.
Effect: Your CHA modifier halved is X. The hatching pokemon learns up to X Egg Moves, regardless of its parents’ move sets. These Egg Moves are decided at random. You can only have one instance of any attack. If a pokemon has fewer Egg Moves then X modifier, they learn all of their Egg Moves.

Hell yes. Nuzlocke challenge. I'm going to do one of those runs myself in the summer after Beta's out. I'm taking a long break from working on this game once Beta's available. At least until September.

But, over the summer I'll be releasing another Tabletop Adventures game that we've been working on. It'll be a really quick pick up and play style game great for one-shot story sessions.

Probably flat level, otherwise you couldn't get exp from pokemon you're a higher level then. Which would be dumb because weaker pokemon can still take out stronger pokemon if the type advantage allows.

    Rounds:
During the start of each round, Trainers have their turns first. Refer to a trainer's DEX stat to see which trainers go first.

During their turn, a trainer can make a Trainer Action, Issue a Command and Shift.
    Trainer Actions are;
    Using a feature.
    Using the Pokedex.
    Using an item.
    Returning/Sending Out a Pokemon.
    Making a Trainer Attack.

Shifting is moving. Trainer can move 5 meters or 5 spaces per round, adding (or subtracting) DEX modifer.

Issuing a command is telling your pokemon what to do during that round. If you use a Poke Ball, this counts as your "Issue a Command" for that round. You pokemon may still Shift by they may not use a Move.

Speed determines the order that pokemon move during the round after the trainer turns are done.

During a pokemon's turn (the pokemon you issued a command to), They may use a Move and Shift.

Moves are what each pokemon have to use as attacks/buffs etc. during their turn.

Shifting is how much that pokemon can move during the round referring to the pokemon's Speed Capabilities.

When a trainer is hit, they have no defenses unless they have a Feature that gives them some. They will take whatever damage is rolled by the attacker.

If a Trainer hits a pokemon, if it is with a Move apply the relevant Defense. If it is with a weapon, apply the pokemon's Defense stat to it.

To hit with a Trainer attack that is not a Move, the accuracy check is 6.

    Overland - Speed Capability
Overland is a Speed Capability that defines how quickly the Pokemon moves while on dry land. After the word Overland, in the Capabilities listing, a number from 1 to 10 should be listed. The number paired with the Overland Keyword corresponds with a value representing how much the Pokemon can Shift during a round of combat. It also matches with an average speed to be used outside of battle.
Overland Value - Shift Value per Round- Average Speed
    Overland 1 -1 meter per round - 0.3 mph - 0.5 km/h
    Overland 2 -3 meters per round - 4 mph - 6.4 km/h
    Overland 3 -6 meters per round - 10 mph - 16 km/h
    Overland 4 -10 meters per round - 15 mph - 24 km/h
    Overland 5 -15 meters per round -20 mph - 32 km/h
    Overland 6 -20 meters per round -35 mph - 56 km/h
    Overland 7 -25 meters per round - 50 mph - 80 km/h
    Overland 8 -30 meters per round -100 mph - 160 km/h
    Overland 9 - 40 meters per round - 400 mph - 645 km/h
    Overland 10 -75 meters per round - 1,000 mph - 8,050 km/h

spaces on a board can be used interchangeably with meters.

When your Speed's combat stages are raised twice (Agility), your speed capabilities are all raised 1 level.

Speed capabilities are going to be on the GM's screen for quick reference. Also with statuses, and each pokemon's base stats/capture rates/exp drop (hopefully).

I believe the GM's screen is going to have 5 sections, 4 folds. I'm sure anyone interested can slap it on cardboard with your favorite pictures on the back.

So when figuring out move speeds, how much of "alright, does this make the poke otherwise impractical or silly" did you take into account? Say, giving Geodude a fly speed because it's sometimes shown as just floating around or Garchomp one, despite it not having anything that implies it flies aside from pokedex info?

    Geodude has Sky 1

Sky is a Speed Capability that defines how quickly the Pokemon moves while flying, floating or levitating. After the word Sky, in the Capabilities listing, a number from 1 to 10 should be listed. The number paired with the Sky Keyword corresponds with a value representing how much the Pokemon can Shift during a round of combat in the air. It also matches with an average speed to be used outside of battle. If a Pokemon has the keyword Sky, it can propel itself of the ground for at least 5 minutes off the ground at a time. If a Pokemon learns the Move Fly and does not have the Sky Capability, they gain Sky 1. If they already have the Sky Capability, the Sky value is raised 1.
Sky Value -Shift Value per Round -Average Speed
    Sky 1 - 1 meter per round - 0.3 mph - 0.5 km/h
    Sky 2 -3 meters per round - 4 mph - 6.4 km/h

Not if it is pokemon who are fighting each other at the same Speed. Naturally, if the pokemon completely outclasses the pokemon in Speed, they won't need all the movement - it just means they can get anywhere on the field each turn. It also means, if they have ranged attacks, they can kite.

How practical is using more than one pokemon?
Of course it would be banned in tournaments and the like, but I don't think there's any reason you can't throw out your whole team to battle a couple of Team Rocket goons.

And what's the max size of your team? Is still an arbitrary "only six" limit or can you have as many as you can carry (in pokeballs, of course)?

6 is the regulation size of a team. It is very impractical to have multiple pokemon out since you can only issue one command per round, unless you have the Dual Wielding Feature, but then you can still only issue two commands per round.

Rocket goons will have similar problems so while they'll be dirty about battling, they won't have their whole team out either.

Pokemon League sets that 6 man standard. Poke Balls, registered to your Trainer ID won't work until you've opened a Pokemon storage account with PC.

If you get around it, and are caught, you could have your Trainer license revoked. I guess. Just settings suggestions.

Rocket, again, may have more the 6, maybe, but still will have a problem if you're targeting them and not their pokemon, as they will be doing to you.

This just made me think of something: What happens when a trainer's hitpoints are reduced to 0? Death? Unconsciosness? And what happens to Pokemon that haven't been returned to their pokeballs when their trainers run out of HP?

Tangentially related: If you steal a pokeball, would the pokemon within obey you? Or do they have some loyalty to their trainer beyond that instilled by the pokeball?

Ran a session today, it was...okay? I guess. Didn't really feel it.

Players went to a graduation day 2 v 2 tournament and ended up hooking up with two NPC trainers. The martial artist with the Mawile teamed up with a spoiled girl with a Snubull, while the Breeder with his Totodile ended up partnering with a lax, black artist guy with a Smeargle.

An ambitious NPC (kind of a bitch, thinking of making her a rival) originally almost had the Breeder team up with her, since she wanted her Vulpix to be with a water type, but then he realized how much of a bitch she was and turned her down, causing her to rage.

After a bit of roleplaying, (we wasted a LOT of time) the tournament started up, and that's where I had a few regrets.

First of all, I had all the players start with flat level one Pokemon, and just about every trainer had level one Pokemon. The trainer with the Mawile was fortunate when I rolled off on the random first round encounters: a generic pair of fuck-ups that had gone to the wild and caught a Rattata and Pigey, which she and her friend thoroughly destroyed.

After that, I saw that I REALLY fucked up for a random team. The fight was Totadile and Smeargle vs. Nosepass and Geodude. Holy fuck. Totadile and Smeargle destroyed the Geodude because the two crit him (Smeargle sketched tackle). Nosepass then proceeded to beat Smeargle unconscious and go ahead and molest Totadile, who had tried to Leer Nosepass around the battlefield so that he could go in for the kill, but he fucked up in his positioning.

Not sure what I can do to occupy the time of the Breeder now that he has lost, though I'm contemplating a way to get him back in the game. (Maybe kidnap the girl to test the Berserk Gene on a human, opening up a spot on the player's team?)

    >> Anonymous 04/07/10(Wed)21:40 No.9047960
His dad is going to be neither of the two, unfortunately.

No, that's just one of those weird fan theories that spring up every once in a while.

Do you need to have three Magnemites to get a Magneton?

An event involving Celebi in HG/SS confirms that the gen2 rival is Giovanni's son.

No. The evolution from magnemite into magneton is actually two cancerous growths that stabilize and become the rest of the pokemon's body.

This is an occasion where Pokemon does not need additional grimdark. What's wrong with just reproducing buy budding?

Does anyone have that image which is basically a huge wall of text, and it talks about how every episode after like the second one is just Ash dreaming in a coma, cause when he got struck by lighting, it had put him into a coma.

And it went into great detail talking about how things in the show support this idea. That Ash is in a coma dreaming about the adventures he has with Pikachu and friends.
