I love pokedex entries. Sometimes I just sit down with the game and read all those little random snippets. First thing I would do in a tabletop environment is actually take advantage of those fun facts and make the world come alive.

After I set up a nice Wild west or space opera environment to play around it with pokemon applied to it.

From what i've read of the PTA alpha/incoherent mess, I like that the way leveling up and stat allocation works you have a little more wiggle room as far as the pokemon tiers are concerned as they stand.

There will probably still be tiers and shit, but they'll have to be restructured a little.

If you're a bunch of jaded 18 year old whinyfags (I was one of these once) then the grimdark is just "herpaderp Im angsty!" but if you're 12 and what is this then things like a world-destroying pokemon war take on a new significance, specifically because the kids just accept them as the way things are.

I imagine you'd just need to make a few house rules.

    >>8984517
When a trainer gains a level they might meet the prerequistes to gain a Trainer Class. Trainers can go into one to three of the following eight Classes once they meet the prerequistes: Ace Trainer, Breeder, Capture Specialist, Coordinator, Martial Artist, Psychic, Ranger, or Researcher.
From there, once they gain the nessecary prerequistes, they may go into one or two Advanced Classes.
Trainer's all start with the title: Pokemon Trainer. A Pokemon Trainer can take up to three Trainer Classes and/or Advanced Classes. Since Advanced Classes always have a prerequiste of a Trainer Class, a Pokemon Trainer's Feature Options will look like one of the following examples: Three Trainer Classes, never pursuing a speciality in any of the three Trainer Classes. Two Trainer Classes and one Advanced Class, choosing to find an expertise in an area of one of the Trainer Classes chosen. One Trainer Class and two Advanced Classes, choosing to become adept at the class they choose by mastering two aspect of the Trainer Class.

You gain these Trainer Classes or Advanced Classes instead of gaining a Feature during Trainer Level Up. When you take a Class, you gain two Features anyway so you aren't missing out on your Feature you get during that level.

You would still catch during random battles, fight other trainers, use teams of six creatures with abilities, and four moves each. Extra pokemon are nicknamed and sent to the box. Sounds like pokemon to me.

The difference is that random battles would be with gangs of pokemon rather than one at a time, and Trainers would use six pokemon at once instead of one at a time. Just apply area of effect to each move as neccesary, have weather effects change terrain.

It's not exactly the same as pokemon, but that's a good thing. The changes are just enough to make the gameplay enjoyably different and just that much deeper with the addition of a gridded plane and area of effects on moves.

Also Earthquake and Surf would be terrible moves to have on pokemon unless you build your teams around them. It's little ins and outs of the imaginary system like that that make me utterly excited and sad that it will never happen.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)22:27 No.8984781
A pokemon game will never work because for every trainer, that means there are 1-6 pokemon to take up time

If one chooses this, it's fine, but they only can issue one command per round, which means their pokmon are getting rocked while the wild go crazy. Also, the more pokemon players use, the more apokemon the GM can use.

I would personally make Pkmn trainer the Onion Knight of the classes. Note that the two strongest in-game trainers you fight so far- Red and Steven (Emerald) - have that as their title? You only get meh progression through most levels, then once you start getting past eight badges or ribbons, you get bonuses up the ass.

Breeder is easily the most breakable, but not until late in a campaign.
Then it was Coordinator, the fastest leveler, at the cost of being only really good at being a Coordinator.
Researcher is very useful for the team and is greatly appreciated in a group.
Ace Trainer, Capture Specialist and Ranger were next.
Followed by the Psychic/Martial Artist who are great in off the record against bad-guy fights, but not useful in an official setting.

That extension thing is what I was going for in this game. Think of your 6 pokemon as 6 shields. 6/7ths of your HP.
They are not separate characters, though you may RP them as such, they are just different types of HP that are affected in different ways.
The central mind of this Player you roll, that is the main HP and if that goes down, the whole team falls apart.

What rules did you have planned regarding a trainer's Pokemon fainting?

Does the trainer black out after Pokemon faints/dies? Excluding possible character trauma from death.

If a pokemon is dropped into -HP they'll faint and dislike you for letting them fall, a lot. Return them at this point.
If a pokemon is dropped into -100% HP, they'll need to make a Death Saving's Check. The check is, on 1d100, to roll equal to or under the Pokemon's level x 2. The check maxes out at 90.
This means a more mature Pokemon is more likely to survive a deadly ordeal.
It also means you have to be really smart when battling against trainer who want to kill your pokemon.
Obviously Gym Leaders and such will finish your pokemon with lighter moves, Rocket members will not.

If all of your pokemon are unable to fight, you better have some awesome allies to get you to a pokemon center, or the wilds will eat you up. The carnivorous ones at least.

That is exactly why we started the project a little more then a year back. The pokemon franchise offers NO trainer freedom. The trainer options in this game is meant to satisfy that emptiness.

I can see the connection even better when you consider how fluid the evolution process is in this game.

For example, a GM may rule that an Eevee struck by a thunder attack that would otherwise kill it for good, instead re-actively evolved into a jolteon to save its own life. Or, that because a trainer never lets his Magikarp finish a fight, and instead switches it out mid-battle for someone else to finish (and split the exp), that is has low self-esteem, and probably won't evolve for a while, even though its level is high enough to.

The Breeder's Pusher advanced class, essentially a Move Tutor from games, can do these kinds of things. The GM wouldn't even need to do anything special, it's a thing the Breeder can do.

Breeder is a very number-crunchy class. I wanted to have one in the game for those who like number crunching and Pokemon. This is why Breeder gets SO good late game. He takes a while to get there, but once he hits the threshold, he can do anything.

I can answer this one, as I've read a bit.

Basically, you cannot teach a pokemon strange moves without the use of a trainer class feature or GM approval. For instance, I believe a breeder can eventually breed normally incompatible pokemon or just pass egg moves they normally couldn't learn to the child.

I don't know how the game handles breeding though, whether they take a mature, serious perspective, or handwave it and keep it innocent much like in the games.

    1) It is a video game
    2) It is popular on /v/

    All signs point to "no"

Also, bonus factor that doesn't apply to everyone: When it came out in 1998, common place comic&game stores all over my end of town supersaturated their shelves with pokemon merchandise, and got rid of almost every piece of /tg/ related material to make room for more stuffed pikachu dolls.

    Breeding:
When attempting to mate 2 pokemon, you must roll d100 when you retrieve them.
If you roll under 25, an egg is produced.
Pokemon need at least 8 hours. For every hour under 12, add 5 to their role. For every hour over 12, up to 16 hours, subtract 2 from your check.
That maximize line implies that leaving them for 12 hours improves the chances because there isn't a number added to your rolls during the breeding check. Leaving them for 16 hours subtracts 8 from the roll.
Add the difference between the two pokemon’s levels to the roll; this is the Level Difference penalty.

Is you pass the check, you have an egg. You may only make one breeding check per day.

Breeders break several off these hard-to-squeeze-by rules. They are strictly better at making these checks.

    No, it's not "lol pokesex"

It's more of an in-character issue. Breeding for dogfights in real life is severely frowned upon, so do other people in the game world look down upon the breeder for this competitive attitude?

Lets face it, if you breed on purpose, it's to gain power. I'm wondering how the game reacts to breeders. Are they treated like trainers who are cutthroat? Are they on the same level as those who push their pokemon too hard?

Well, some don't Breed for the battling nature of pokemon. Breeding is good for the roleplaying side of this game too.

    Breeder description:
Some trainers realize the value of raising a pokemon from a young age in order to build a better bond with their allies and friends. Breeders emphasize the importance of raising a pokemon from birth, not as a friend, but as their own children. Breeders hatch eggs very quickly and can actually coerce their pokemon to produce multiple eggs. The most noticeable talent a breeder shows is the fact that their pokemon are naturally born with more power then the average pokemon. Some even grow more powerful then any other in its species. Their pokemon are born with the courage and strength to pull them through any situation.

Level 5 is practical if they are battling similarly leveled foes.
Earlier then that, you just want them to get fed, carried, etc.
GMs should reward pokemon level 1-6 exp for that kind of stuff. At 125 exp, a pokemon is already level 5. Until then, RP the baby until it's big enough to fight.

My players in a past playtesting campaign have found the gang member trainers difficult in general.

Though, one of my players just took out his parents single handed the other night. He is a Researcher, and his character's parents are Team Aqua cultists, so he had fun defeating what he had run away from. He used an ingenious tactic. Stun Spored his parents, and once they inhaled the spore and froze up, he returned their pokemon to their poke balls when he grabbed them off his parents' belts.

It's hard to look at the Tabletop Adventures versions and decide which I like the most, but it seems like versatility is key. Psychic types and Grass types seem to have tons of potential. Flying and Water types should be very helpful for a variety of reasons, and I could definitely see why you'd want a fire, ghost, or electric pokemon every once and a while.

    >> Psychic Residue Anonymous 04/05/10(Mon)01:15 No.8988442
Hey Dr. Mr. Stark. I was looking at the psychic stuff, and about Residue. I don't know if you've changed it since you releases Alpha, but it was horrendously under-conceptualized. If you've fleshed it out since, then disregard this.

You need to specify which psychic abilities leave it, and which don't. I'd say that mind reading/control should cause it, while attacks, and stuff that effects only yourself, should not.

Also, I don't know how much it has come up in your play-testing, but the residue feature seems like it'd be overpowered to the just-as-planned sort of character, and nobody else would want it.

I'd suggest rectifying this by splitting it up - Residue Detective allows you to detect the residue in others, and get some idea of what ability is involved. Psychic Stealth would allow you to, on a successful roll, avoid leaving residue. I'd think Psychic Stealth could afford to have Residue Detective as a prerequisite, but I don't know what criteria you were using for your power curve.

I feel that the current system would be insufficient for a socially oriented psychic, especially an influential.

Pretty much all the classes have been redone, psychic very much included.

All abilities that cause it specifically mention that they cause it. It's mainly a hallmark of the "Influential" advanced class.

That alpha version shows ~2 pages of information on a class that's now more in the 20-30 page range.

That's good. That was the only thing I saw when I looked through everything before that looked like it could cause a sudden and immediate clusterfuck.

Have you had this sort of thing come into play, during testing? It seems like something that would normally never matter, but if you have a character determined to use psychic abilities in ways that are illegal, unethical, or otherwise frowned upon, then it becomes very important very quickly.

During a campaign, my players became outlaws for a bit and had to be very careful about how one of them used psychic powers, as some who were after them were psychics too. Other then that, it'll only really be a problem for those who want to take a darker path as a psychic.

But psychic residue can't always be tagged to a name or face. It's more like: "A Psychic, or a psychic pokemon, has tampered with this person's behavior" not "Player X tampered with this person's behavior"

I've always had a soft spot for hitmonchan and hitmonlee, but since playing heartgold and actually hanging out with the pokemon first in my party, Hitmonchan has become a total bro and my favorite pokemon.

It's just easier to feel attached to a more humanoid pokmemon, I suppose.

    Also, its sprite is adorable.

Tyrogue's pretty awesome, too. Looking forward to playing as a martial artist and training alongside my fightan' types.

Me and a friend had a discussion about having our characters start out with a pokemon they're familiar with, part of the family or some shit. I just had to go with a tyrogue.

Plus water pokemon are common as hell, (As in there's a lot of them, and a lot to choose from), and come in a great deal of handy type combinations, making up for a weakness to a single type. There's your Water/flying plant rapers, and your ground/water electric rapers. I quite like water pokemon, but I prefer ice. Fuck yeah, Cloyster, not my favorite, but goddamn their defense rating. I always play blue/water in any game. It started as a kiddy thing when I was younger, my irl name has a metaphor pertaining to water, but after time I played water/blue naturally.

The pokemon appeal is that since it is water type and water covers most of the world, I like that water has the most variety when it comes to what kind of animals are made into water pokemon.

Yeah, I'm always more excited about catching and training first gen pokemon because of the attachment I developed as a kid. I never got very into gold, played sapphire to hell though, and skipped diamond and pearl until my friends convinced me to get crazy about platinum. Skipped firered and leafgreen for some reason, guess I didn't feel like playing through 3rd gen's mechanics.

In heartgold, though, I traded myself a bulbasaur almost immediately, as well as a tyrogue, and used them as much as my starter.

My team throughout the game was 2/3 first gen (Hitmonchan, Typholosion, Venusaur, Ludicolo, Pidgeot and Gengar).

I guess I'm the magma to your aqua. I'm a grass trainer myself. When I first started playing, I picked bulbasaur as my starter because there was something charming in that little toad. I've never liked the aggressiveness of fire, and the freedom of water is something to envy, but grass types are just the greatest.

There's something special about growing something from the earth, giving life where there was none. I love how detached they can be, but still caring enough to lie in the open grass with and just relax. There's something special about taking a nap on a Torterra's back, or playfully bouncing a jumpluff as you walk.

Blastoise, Alakazam, Crap! Legendary = replace (With SCYTHER), Golem (yes, that's right, GOLEM), Fucking Pidgeot, Sparky the Raichu.

You don't really need OU pokemon all the time just to play.

Golem or Graveller is a key party member for me in almost all pokemon games. As it's pretty much in every fucking game, and it's an easy to get rock/ground type. And it's a good one. Granted I think golem is ugly as sin, but Goddamn it's fucking useful.
