Hi guys. Steve got back from somewhere last night, apologizing that he left on short notice. He did send me this, I figurd you guys would want to see it.

    BlackFlag External Document #100357

    Mission Briefing “Granite Fulcrum”
Source: FSB (Russian Federal Security Service)
    Deployment: Gyandzha (Azerbaijan)
    Pancake: Gyandzha (Azerbaijan)
    Alternate: Nakhichevan (Azerbaijan)
    AAR: None
    AWACS: None
CSAR: Spetznaz Team Omni, detached from Vympel (Vega Group)

    Contract Employer: Russian Federation

Objective: Destruction of Khrami hydroelectric station #2.
    >> op again 04/03/10(Sat)22:16 No.8962853
    Background:
My name is Sergei, my rank and title are unimportant. I have been tasked by the FSB to act as a liaison between your squadron and Central command. While unorthodox, central command believes that hiring “Hell's Black Aces” to perform the initial stages of our ongoing Georgia operation will significantly enhance the Maskirovka we are aiming to produce. You will be informed of your missions by me, and me alone. Ongoing operations in theatre will not be discussed with you, unless required. Adherence to operational security protocols is essential, from this point forward assume everything you say is monitored. Should you be captured, the Russian Federation will deny all knowledge of you and your actions. Failure to comply with the regulations outlined in the documents before you, as well as the instructions of your liaison officer, will be considered an act of treason while you are operating under contract to the FSB and the Russian Federation. Understood? Good. Your first assignment is simple. Take out the Khrami hydroelectric station. This is the first step in the Maskirovka. We have prepared special air dropped munitions, built with low-grade explosives designed to simulate a typical IED or saboteur strike. We believe that dropped in sufficient quantity, they will adequately cripple power production while being untraceable. You will be operating out of Azerbaijan, which has provided and airfield for your use throughout the duration of this campaign. Our aim is to ensure the world community believes that an internal faction is beginning terrorist acts as a precursor to civil war. It is of utmost importance that the Russian Federation not be involved in these initial operations, and as such, any penetration of Russian Sovereign Airspace will be considered penetration by hostile forces, and Air Defense will respond accordingly.

    275 KB
    HUMINT: None.
    ELINT: None.
SATINT: Yantar-4 pass and Bars confirmation shows the hydroelectric station is located in the depths of the Khrami river valley. While no obvious defensive stations are present, the area surrounding the complex is heavily wooded, providing cover for mobile air defense. We are still going over the radar imaging data, but current analysis has not located defensive positions or equipment.
    Air Assets: Unknown
    Surface Assets: Unknown

Threat Assessment: Medium-Low. The Georgians are still reeling from their conflict with the Russian Federation. The morale of their military forces is at an all time low, and their air-defense forces are in shambles. Maintain a stealthy approach, and we believe you will be able to slip in and out with minimal risk.

ROE: Do not fire unless fired upon, or if operational security would be compromised.

If you fly low and slow through valleys and mountains, you are basically begging for a FlaK or MANPADS trap.

The really bad news is that the defenders can use cellphones or satphones to coordinate, and you will never know they did.

I'm thinking this is a definite "dead of night" mission, to reduce visual spotting as much as possible. Does anyone have a night sat photo of Georgia? We can plot around most lighted/populated areas that way.

This mission smells too much like a cakewalk.

    It's the dam, comrade!

It appears to be near the small town of Imeni Molotova. Google for that, then go right. Also, the 'Terrain' feature is bloody useful here.

I found it using the small town of Bediani - it's on the steep sides of the same gorge, so I just followed the river until I found something that appeared to be a hydroelectric dam. Which is what that is.

If you look, there are three pipes which appear to drop 400m in 400m - that's plenty for a hydroelectric plant built in 1947. They're probably a viable target, but the structure at the bottom is the one with the real business in it, with two (or more) turbines.

I'm curious about the munitions - if they can be delivered at speed, it might be possible for HELL'S BLACK ACES to drop them through the walls/windows of the turbine house - it'd appear to be the work of an explosion inside then...

You'll also note the access road is a switchback and a half - I know it to be possible to duct tape parts of a GAZ or other local truck to the underside of an F-4, but how accurately they could be delivered I'm not certain - however, one of the first indicators of the use of a truck bomb is the presence of parts of a truck.

What's the carrying capacity of an F-111?

No comrade. That way lies madness.

I am proposing that they drop the PARTS of a truck, admittedly, all of them, onto the bridge. While those parts are wrapped around a bomb or two.

    WHO WOULD EXPECT IT?

perhaps simply chunks of steel that still have serial plates or registration codes. that way when they are combing through the blast there will be something to base the investigation around. iirc the biggest scraps of evidence in the OK-city bombing was two or three twisted bits of steel the size of a forearm.

of course, it is possible we are overthinking this.
"ok, i got it. we get a silent russian chopper, and hang a big truck Under that, and fill the truck with bombs.. then we drag the truck down the road, smash through the gate and tow it into the powerhouse to blow up... its foolproof."

You drop a truck people are nuts! Interesting nuts, but nuts.

On the subject of useful Maskirovka though, it may not be a bad idea for sandy and baron to rent/borrow a couple of SU-25s for the mission. They have the payload/capability for the strike, and are in active service with the Georgians, which could be useful for disguising the strike, especially if they are trying to make this look like the result of a terror bombing rather than an airstrike. If in addition you could arrange to bribe someone for Georgian codes/frequencies there is the potential for your flight to just slip in and out without raising any alarms

Thats one thing that pissed me off about the movie (a lot of things did, but they're irrelenvant)

The novel- "Forensics say there was cardboard residue, which you can't make an aircraft bomb out of..." *picks up big-ass Janes hardcover* "... Or can you? This warrants looking at!"

The movie- "Forensics say there was cardboard residue... And according to this book there is a super-secret stealth bomb the Americans built made of cardboard!"

God the amount that Hollywood sucks is directly proportional to how epic these threads are.

    # Nuclear weapons: All F-111 models except the EF-111A and the Australian F-111C were equipped to carry various free-fall nuclear weapons: tactical models generally carried the B43, B57, or B61, the FB-111A those weapons or the B83. Sorry comrades, if my plan is not clear.

Get a truck. Blow it up, or at least disassemble (top tip: blowing stuff up is one of the fastest ways to make it into smaller pieces) it and bunch it up as a rectangular brick around a bomb (or thirty). Drop it out of the Aardvaark onto the waterpipes, taking out the bridge. That stops the generators, and hampers access to the site.

Also bomb the crap out of the turbine house. Coming at it low and from the side rather than above would create the impression that the explosions were caused by weapons placed, rather than dropped. Hopefully, anyway.

In this plan the lads would come north up the valley (see the terrain feature) and they'd likely need two for the actual bombing. First in takes the turbine house, that's the important part - you don't get paid for a mobility kill on a building. Second, which I'm recommending be the 'vaark, is further disinformation. As the first striker exits NOE, the 'vaark goes vertical, which has the downside of showing up on radar unless someone is distracted, and then divebombs the bridge. Admittedly, it'd be an engineering challenge, but I should think it's pretty easy to make a three-tonne brick made out of truck parts and explosives fall more or less straight down.

Aardvaark exits back down the valley, and Georgian conspiracy theorists start talking about "the truck that blew up twice". Meanwhile Triggerhappy and Trogdor and Whatsischops can fly air cover and probably get the chance to COLLATERAL DAMAGE some innocent Orthodox monks when they fire an anti-radiation missile at an onion dome.

Of course, this assumes that Steve has picked a location that can be GOOGLEINTed.

Then I have no idea comrade. This is a structure that I found that appears to be a hydroelectric plant on the same valley as the river that it is allegedly on.

Admittedly, it's clearly a hydroelectric station, not a dam - Steve didn't say 'dam', he said station - it's the same type as a number that I've seen in real life, and that 400m in 400m drop is pretty indicative.

It's about 200KM on a straight shot from Ganja (Gyandzha?) and there's room for extreme NOE in the valley to the target.

If it were hardened, I'd expect SAMs and similar along the valleys. The thing is, I don't really expect it to be hardened - it's not exactly a priority target, but it's a serious opportunity to show some cunning and brutality, or at least some brutality and cunning.

Avoiding detection is the best bet - so a night raid. Then it becomes about managing radar defenses. At that time of night I don't know how many commercial flights there are to hide behind, so I suspect it's low-level/NOE in and out as a best course of action.

There's no alternate target - the objective is 'destruction', but there's no dam to take out that I can see, and now that I think about it you *can* mobility kill a generating station by taking out its transmission farm.

So there's really three targets - the turbine house, the transformer park, and the piping/access road. Each of which makes the task of repairing the plant harder, and each of which makes it easier to sow disinformation.

Never mind truck parts. Do you think its time to pay homage to Operation Mincemeat?

I mean, Hell's Black Aces have been hired here to destabilise Georgia. They sank a cruise liner. They upset Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas Queen, Defender of the Faith, Duchess of Edinburgh, Countess of Merioneth, Baroness Greenwich, Duke of Lancaster, Lord of Mann, Duke of Normandy, Duchess of Qwghlm, Duke of Outer Qwghlm. Jacking up Georgia's electricity costs could well be within the scope of the FSB's goals though; a good way to destabilize a region is to deny it basic services after all. I mean, you blow up a power station or two, it gets on the news that the government that is reeling already can't protect the infrastructure. Costs go up, anger amongst the citizenry that suddenly has to spend more of their money on bills then on distracting things like TV's and cable or whathaveyou, anti-government groups see a surge of membership and political clout, you hit something else like a coffee shop or a school, and suddenly everyones fears are given a manifest example. You then have your backed anti-government group that is say, very pro-Russia, come in and take control in an election. They request aid from the Russian military for security reasons, and suddenly the PC's squadron is being hunted by the Russian air-force as terrorists. They get shot down, a whirlwind investigation happens in front of the media and some Georgian mid-level military man gets propped up as the hero of the day who just happens to, I dunno, have a Russian wife or something.

Overall Russian sentiment skews into the positive, leading to enhanced economic relations. Suddenly you have a sattelite state with all the economic benefits that entails with none of the costs or security risks of actually conquering the place.

Add modern fighters(F-35s, plus F-16s), AWACS support (they'll have several 737 with a AESA radar in service by 2015) and shooting at them becomes a big no-no if your plan includes not ejecting with multiple AMRAAMs on your tail.

This really looks like a easy mission. So obviously it will be anything but. I don't know if Op has but his group should really start taking into account possible civilians on the battlefield from now in whatever passes for their mission planning.

For example any nearby towns or passing civilian passenger aircraft. I'd also be willing to bet the day they attack is the day a school decides to go there for their field trip.

Also about all this talk about dropping truck parts in the bomb blast. Clever, but doesn't that still leave the fact that any eyewitness is going to report the sounds of jets making these runs?

I really can't wait to read who gets a bomb in his bedroom this time. This stuff really is inspiring, to the point that it makes me wonder if I should try running something similar on the 'net. I don't have the grasp on air combat requires, but I could get away with "grim and gritty mercenary action" style games.

Speaking of Russian trucks, there is a Kraz truck official video, that is like a sales promo prodcut, that for no reason, at 1:50 in has one of their trucks jumping off a ramp over an exploding car.

Actually, if they ARE using the AirWar ruleset, wouldn't a Block 25 F-16 be better? Given that it has a better Computer, bombing ability and top speed? I suppose only having 6 Damage Points compared to 8 might be a worry, but realistically, 2 extra points doesn't make THAT much of a difference.

Hell, if they'd signed up with China, he could have bought the J10.

The J10... talk about a dark horse. It seems to me that knowing what you're flying is more or less vital for these chaps, so flying a plane that hasn't that much information of it out might be a little worrying.

I wasn't aware there was that much secrecy around it, I was just going with what the Wikipedia page said and it's stat-block in AirWar, where it's essentially an F-16 with ECM and more hardpoints that looks like a Eurofighter.

Alternatively, maybe give the Gripen go? How expensive are they these days anyway?

And yet, aside from the DP, according to stats the J10 is still better. Scary.

Hmm, comparing to the Gripen the two are essentially the same, except the Gripen turns better, and the Super Hornet has ECM.

Tough call really. Now I'D still go for the Gripen, but my love of SAAB made fighter planes has been fairly well documented.

My concern with the J-10 was that it's brand spanking new when compared to the rest of the playing field, and coming from a manufacturer that is nearly religious in its dedication to not admitting to faults. Thus I find it's reliability, performance and possible quirks might be something to worry about. While I realize it'd run propably like a dream when taken plainly on game rules, there's the Steve-factor to consider.

Ironic, but I'd find the plane trustworthy if it was actually older. Are there any performance reports from non-Chinese national sources?

Gripen, I dunno. That's yet another dark horse. But it has some years on it, and seems to be doing okay. Might be interesting. Easy parking in a pinch, would be funny for the wing to do CSAR on their own.

Comrades - I appreciate the distracting nature of those airframes, but we have a mission to help with, Da?

There are two key things to remember -

    1) This is effectively a deceit/fals-flag operation, so secrecy and misdirection are key. They don't have access to Russian airspace, but it's only about 200km WNW from Ganja to their target. There are a few flights that come into Tblisi in the small hours -

    http://www.tbilisiairport.com/0.php?id=3

Hiding underneath Turkish or Austrian traffic to ingress, then NOE down the valley after the strike, with a 'special package' of truck parts HELD INTERNALLY. Again, I'm not seriously advocating dropping a truck from a wing hardpoint - that would be madness. A bundled parcel wrapped around some of the FSB's "IED alikes" would do the job nicely.

    2) This is not a dam. It's a hydroelectric station, which appears to be a run-of-the-river/reservoir fed installation. The water runs down those three tubes in the satellite imagery down 400m in 400m - they are the source of the hydro power.

As cool as it sounds to use truck parts lets think about this. What kind of trucks are commonly seen in Georgia? Could Op's group buy the same in their current location? Does the location of the station make it believable that someone just drove right up to it with a VBIED and nobody noticed?

Not to rain on your parade here, but strapping truck parts to the outside of a bomb is going to significantly alter it's aerodynamic profile, to the point that on-board computers CCIP is going to be way, way off.

Hmm. For speculation, I think we're approaching the mission from the wrong angle. We should be thinking about undetected entry and exit modes rather than what we drop on the target.

I like >>8973370 's idea of sneaking in along civilian traffic. That's a risk too, but at least it's a conscious one. Going in blind without the foggiest of ideas of possible listeners out on the route sounds plain bad news.

Perhaps Sandman could be the one designated to deliver the payload, and the rest of the squadron would work on probing the area and the route covertly beforehand. Eplore and write a map for the delivery, so to say, and then loiter in the background ready to jump in in case things get hairy on delivery day.

Its called "Raptors Rock but flankers rule" or something thereabouts.

So anyone else still been messing with MAS? Game is frustrating. Always on the verge of bankruptcy and barely able to afford munitions for the next mission.

I was looking in my MAS folder for the Raptors[verb]ButFlankersRule.pdf but it isn't there. I'm tempted to start MAS again, but I have to be brutally honest with it -- one pilot to begin with, and 2 F-4s. Not easy.

Hm? In single-player "solitaire" mode you start with 4 pilots and 2 Phantoms.

I didn't like that. I looked at the starting rules in 2.2 or whatever and saw that one player = one pilot, and starting with 1 player in the game gives you two Phantoms.

Just a little idea that came to my mind:

What would happen to the board electronics of a commercial airliner with a SU-27 hugging it close enough to be in it's radar shadow when the Flanker lights up the search dish?

I've been playing around with MAS. I find it helps not to play all missions, if a mission seems like the munitions required will cost more than the mission is worth, I'll deliberately overbid or even not bid on it.
it also helps to have more campaigns available, i've been working on a campaign generator and some alternate enemy charts.

The blazing Congo sun was muted by the camo netting stretched overhead, held up by a collection of rough wooden poles, sheets of corrugated metal, and a few barrels. Hanging from one of the poles was a sign that read OFFICER'S CLUB.

Baron sprawled in a lawn chair, wearing only a pair of boxers, his gangly legs stretched out onto an empty ice-chest. A warm bottle of beer sat on the upended crate next to him. Up here, there was little to see but sky, encroaching treetops, and a short swath of the airstrip. A thin breeze wafted over the roof, scarcely wicking the sweat from his skin. Baron took another swig of the weak local beer.

He glanced over, without rising, as Sandman came clambering up the ladder to the roof, hands coming into view first, flexing as they gripped the top rungs. Sandy was an odd one, in Baron's experience. He had that accountant-like appearance so common with those American pilots--a receding hairline, kept trimmed down to eighth-of-an-inch stubble. No tattoos, no piercings. No sharp edges.

He wondered, sometimes, why an American-trained pilot would take up this life. He wasn't an adrenaline junky like the trigger-happy Yanks that flocked to the ground-pounding PMCs. He wasn't a drunk, didn't do drugs. Gambling debts?

"Happy hour, eh Baron?" he muttered, dropping into a lawn chair whose seat had been replaced with a cargo-strap weave.

"The crew, they are trying to cover the floor with pieces of my engine." He raised the bottle in mock-salute. "No flying today." His eyes lingered as Sandman pulled off his T-shirt, a fluid motion of well-sculpted shoulders and arms. When they'd first met, the American had had bit of babyfat, a slight roundness to his face and belly which had accentuated the "accountant" look. All these months in Africa had seemed to hone him down--the work of stress, lousy food, and malaria pills. He looked more...predatory, now. Something stirred in Baron, an impulse he hadn't indulged since his teenage years spent clubbing in Berlin.

Sandman looked over, caught his eyes. A boyish grin--those American teeth. "Looking for something?"

"I could be." Baron was noncommittal, though he felt his pulse begin to throb. Anxious excitement, like a cockpit alarm going off.

Sandman rose again, moved to stand in front of ther German. A small trickle of sweat had formed on his chest, a moist trail disappearing into low-slung fatigue trousers. Baron reached out, touched the other man's smooth flesh. Looked up, questioningly, and got a small smirk in reply that told him all he needed to know. He leaned forward, his hand moving down to the waistline of Sandman's trousers, and brushed his lips over that flat, beautiful abdomen, tasting salt and musky skin with the tip of his tongue.

Sandman's fingers ran through Baron's wavy, blonde hair. A caress, not yet a demand. But Baron could feel the swelling flesh under his palms, an amused smile on his face as he unbuttoned the other man's trousers, reaching inside to feel, to stroke that firm, velvety flesh emerging from its thatch of pubic hair.

Why does an American pilot leave his military career? Now he knew.
