Hey there, /tg/. Some of you might remember Planescape Magical Faction Girls, a silly Planescape campaign idea proposed last April 1 which actually ended up being ran.

Well, I posted a few threads on it (search for magical girls on suptg) but I haven't made many for a few months and I've been asked how it's been going a few times, so now that it has been a year I thought I would post another update thread.

Pretty good timing. We just finished running the entire Great Modron March campaign, though I ended up making a lot of changes (including replacing some adventures entirely). In the last year we've run 41 sessions on suptg - 1-39 what we consider to be "Season 1", which covers the March, and Season 2 just started with a different campaign. If things go well I might run even more Planescape modules, maybe even Faction War if I can think of a way of working it in.

This sounds like faggotry of the highest degree. Maybe you should tell us how gay it got. Is there lots of LESBIAN SEXUAL TENSION? I could imagine that.

    Go away Bleaker-tan!

    >>8909497

Summary of the game so far (reposting a better description):

The PCs are members of a group of magical girls representing the factions - specifically Bleaker-tan, Godsmen-tan, Sensate-tan and Revolutionary-tan. When they are not hanging out at their "base", Fell's Ice Cream Parlor, they work with the other -tans to fight threats to Sigil, which mostly involves travelling the planes and talking to people and/or firing lasers at them.

The basic story of the Great Modron March adventure is that the March itself happens years early for no reason, and the PCs are caught up in it as it circles the planes causing havoc. The March almost tramples a town on Celestia, gets up to a lot of accidental mischief on the Beastlands, struggles through Limbo, etc.

On the way the PCs mostly dealt with the Tacharim (an evil sect that wants to capture modrons and learn how to graft modron parts to regular bashers) and got caught up in adventures involving the other -tans on the side, generally the planar -tans like Baator-tan and Beastlands-tan.

In the end the real villain turned out to have been Valrin Mithir, some guy from the Brotherhood of Belief (http://www.mimir.net/sects/belief.shtml), who had turned up in a pre-March adventure about Harmonium training camps and had been using the power of belief to create a Unity-of-Rings-tan and make it work for him. There was a boss battle on top of a floating rock plane shifting around the Great Ring and they also ended up riding dinosaurs while shooting magical girl beams at each other. It was pretty fun.

There were also some holiday special sessions for Christmas and Valentine's Day and I am probably going to do one for Easter before starting the next campaign.

You would be amazed how fun it's been. Way more entertaining than any other game I've ever been in. Beats Star Wars, WFRP, D&D, all of it.

There's been a bit of moe and adorable stuff in there, but also a bunch of pretty serious business.

And despite all suggestions to the opposite: It's still completely not-creepy.

Infodump about -tans since I was asked:

Athar-tan: Adie Dawkins (NG aasimar), a bookish Athar who gets upset when you remind her that her dad is a god who is sure being an Athar is just a rebellious phase she is going through as a teenager.

Doomguard-tan: Sandy (CG human), a very spiritual cleric-like Sinker who takes the "long-term" view that acts of creation will eventually help entropy along (currently unpopular in the faction), good friends with Revolutionary-tan.

Dustmen-tan: Radia Summer (TN crow tengu), who sees the True Death as a sort of nirvana and pretty much acts like a Shaolin monk, though most of those don't actually kick people through walls.

Fated-tan: Jacqueline Andrea Ryan (LN half-gold dragon), who is obsessed with bling and hires some of the other -tans to work part-time at lemonade stands and such for her.

Guvner-tan: Sami Pythagora (LG human), probably the token moe, thinks mathematics is "really neat!" and secretly writes fanfiction of the Harry Guvner series.

Indep-tan: Henrietta Winkler (CG human), an older girl who pretends to be a delinquent so people will leave her alone and works in a maid cafe. Hasn't shown up that much.

Harmonium-tan: Aribeth de Tylmarande (LG prime elf (Faerun)), a clumsy elf paladin of Tyr who often has trouble when she appears since one of the PCs is Revolutionary-tan; she means well, though.

Mercykiller-tan: Actually two human sisters, Alexandra (LG) and Alyssandra (LE) Enoreth. Alex holds kinder views more in line with the Sons of Mercy who co-founded the Mercykillers, so she is known as Son-tan; Alyssandra (aka Sod-tan) is more of a Sodkiller and also a barmy killer. At the end of the Great Modron March it was revealed that Alyssandra is actually a split personality of Alex.

    >>8910619

Signer-tan: Rene Cartesia (CG tiefling), who was born in Hopeless and has so many fiends in her ancestry that she looks like she has parts for all of them. With the power of IMAGINATION she can reshape her body to any tiefling or fiend-like shape, including turning into a marilith when she is pissed.

Cipher-tan: Sakura (CN human), a fiend-hunting ninja who fights with a katana. Hates fiends and is distrustful of tieflings for no reason. Was sent to represent the Transcendent Order by the tiefling factol Rhys after Sakura wouldn't stop spying on her in case she was up to something.

Xaositect-tan: Katy Sardine (CN... humanoid), who likes shouting "DOOM!" and throwing penguins and kittens at people. While other Xaositects have the strange power to know where lost things are, Katy can unhinge her jaw and pull them out of her mouth. Likes pretending to be things, like a modron and a prison door - and for some reason people believe her.

    PCs:

Godsmen-tan: Minorin Kawashiro (NG human), usually a pretty and cheerful girl who works many part-time jobs to prove her worth. Has built mechanical arms into her backpack which forge items for her as needed for the party. Sometimes acts like a mad scientist.

Bleaker-tan: Oresta Typhon (CG human). Bleakers say there's no meaning to the multiverse except what you find within yourself; Oresta looked inside herself and saw niceness. She is happy and cheerful and naive and punches people really hard once she figures out when they are being dicks.

Revolutionary-tan: Kunin Ropokin (CG half-elf), who is a pretty typical not-too-violent Anarchist. Having an openly Anarchist PC in the party makes things fun. Somehow she is highly respected by many of the lawful -tans even though she annoys the hell out of them.

Sensate-tan: Lagina 38616 (CG tiefling), an orphan raised by a modron. Kind of weird, really likes cake, and usually the closest thing approaching a voice of reason in the group.
    >> Bleaker-tan's Player 04/01/10(Thu)05:05 No.8910728
    >>8910692

May want to point out that Oresta's really not very sharp. She's made friends with Gehenna-tan and Baator-tan, insisting that both of them are really nice people! I mean, Baator-tan wouldn't CALL herself a friend of Oresta's if she wasn't, right?

May have been part of Baator-tan needing emergency medical assistance after they made her heart grow three sizes.

Also refused to accept that Pandemonium-tan might have HATED her when she tried to bite out her throat(she was crazy for a while).

    Oh right, planes.

Not all the Outer Plane-tans have appeared, but those that have made more than a brief appearance:

Mechanus-tan: Syra Archomeda (LN/human/Fraternity of Order), used to be Guvner-tan before she grew up and became obsessed with Mechanus.

Celestia-tan: Liberty (LG/tiefling/Order of Planes-Militant), a tiefling who thought she was hideous and covered up in armour and robes before the PCs came along and it turned out (obviously) that she was really, really good-looking. Another well-meaning paladin but a little less restricted than, say, Aribeth.

Elysium-tan: Real name unknown (NG/aasimar), older lady, spends her time getting drunk and relaxing. One of the strongest magical girls if she's convinced to act, though.

Beastlands-tan: (NG/?/Verdant Guild), one of the Animal Lords of the Beastlands. Specifically she is the Cow Lord and spends her time lazing around a giant barn.

Pandemonium-tan: Used to be a barmy girl in a straightjacket who would attack with a sonic scream and energy knives before Bleaker-tan found out she used to be a Bleaker and went on a quest to restore her mind, which turned her back into Stephanie Pandeaux (NG/planar human (Ortho)/Bleak Cabal) and kind of got her fired. The "new girl" hasn't been met yet.

Abyss-tan: Used to be Abby Heart, a succubus, until she fell in love with a paladin NPC and appealed to the PCs for help. Was eventually kicked out of the Abyss for basically being the worst tanar'ri ever, is now an airheaded classmate of the others. The PCs sabotaged a tanar'ri effort to create a new Abyss-tan in the Fleshforges by filling the forge with chocolates and love.

Carceri-tan: An NE half-tarterian dragon. Name and origin unknown, but the PCs have taken a shine to her for some reason. Tried to force everyone to stay in her tower and hang out with her forever when they passed by while investigating the March, though obviously that didn't go well.

    72 KB
Gehenna-tan: Mei Lin (NE/tiefling (mantis demon)/Society of Pain), who was found at a slave auction for mysterious reasons and was purchased by Bleaker-tan (who thought it was a place where you buy new friends). Mei Lin mostly sits around Bleaker-tan's house taking advantage of her hospitality, eating her food, and creeping the others out by suggesting she would eat their flesh if given the chance.

Baator-tan: Cupcake (LE/aasimar/Merkhants), who used to live on Celestia but ran away as a child after excessive bullying caused by her adorable name. Grew up to be a scheming witch, though the PCs managed to make her at least a little nicer during a Christmas special where they also accidentally caused her heart to grow three sizes. Then she disappeared for a couple months while she was rushed to a hospital.

Acheron-tan: Katsumi (LN/crow tengu), who really likes war games. When circumstances forced her to ally with the PCs she would keep rolling dice to see what would happen next. Kind of the token neckbeard.
There are some other NPCs, but they're mostly not important. I've also used most of the NPCs from the adventure modules I've run, but damn, there are a lot of them. Especially when you open up other Planescape books that just provide background info on the setting and find lots of "example NPCs" directly related to the adventure you're running scattered around the book. Then there's that one book that has nothing but NPCs...

I also had one appearance by the Lady, but that was just to maze a bad guy at the end of a campaign before he blew up most of Sigil.

Nah, it was actually a supreme freakout. We thought we'd won the fight and were home clear, when the villain suddenly walks up behind us and goes: "Yeah, good thing you survived, RIGHT? BWAHAHAHAHA!"

We bounce a couple of attacks off him, turns out they're doing JACK SHIT. Then just before he shithammers us, the Lady shows up and deals with him.

Didn't feel like DEM or DMPC bullshit at all. It was pretty well done.

Reminds me, MR DM PERSON, tell them about the fucking Polybolt. Goddammit.

    >>8911177

Okay so my GM just told me to "tell my own damn story." It is, in fact, incredible.

Now, back in... session... 5 or so, one of the players bounced a shot off one of the others in a fit of inter-party fighting. A polymorph bolt, it literally bounced, went flying and our GM told us it'd "go have wacky adventures and then touch down where the plot demanded it."

We figured that meant maybe it'd do something later in the session.

No such thing. So we forget about it.

Session 39, AGES later, we're about to deliver the FINAL BLOW to knock out one of our old friends who's been converted into a MEGABOSS by Valrin Mithir.

<GM> >> "You see a glow in the sky." [FLASHBACK]

He then copy-pastes the scene where the bolt bounced, describes its wild and dancing trip across the planes as it waxes and wanes in power, boosted by some locations, drained by others and then comes back, right back... to hit the boss in the face.

    BATTLE OVER.

For double awesome, we had basically returned to where we were when the bolt first bounced, at least the same plane. Fucking Unity of Rings!

You don't start with much power at all in Exalted, 99% of chars (even of solar combat builds) will still die to a half dozen mortals with good gear, and there will still always be some 80+ beings that will be ALWAYS better than you, and another 700+ beings that will ALWAYS be as awesome as you, so Exalted isn't all that.

You're still handed 90% of the world on a platter without having to fight for it or roleplay it, and I've yet to see someone who actually designed their character as someone who used to be a mortal, who had skills that'd work as a mortal. They all design their characters like they were always Exalts.

I've honestly never seen a game with worse powergamers among the fanbase.

The game itself is fine(largely, it still has some incredibly retarded parts), but the players and ST's are the worst goddamn people I know. I'd rather be playing with the autists who like FATAL.

I've never heard of any Exalted character dying, ever. Only stories of "OH YEAH AND THEN WE THREW SOMETHING *EVEN BIGGER* AT HIM!!!!!"

Or: "OMG SO AWESOME WE BEAT UP LIKE FIVE CANON VILLAINS THIS WEEK!"

    Or: "WACKY ANIME GAME CONCEPT!!!!"

Oh, wait, totally forgot. Since we got Fair Folk, Infernals and Abyssals there's also been: "A 15-year-old's concept of eeeeeeevil which is to say it's like a Spawn comic with more sex."

I agree with you in principle, the Exalts should be terrified. They're newly incarnated, there are many older, wiser and more crazy Exalts around than them. The Wyld Hunt is going to be on their ass if they don't watch what they do. They need to be subtle, know when to bust out their power, know when to hide it, know when to take a few lumps and pretend to be weak. Be creative with their charms, think, rely on good ideas rather than tons of dice.

But... I just never see, or hear about, that in any games, ever. If I did, I might actually forgive the rancid system and give it another shot but... it just doesn't seem to exist in any parts of the fandom I've encountered.

Though, I deconstructed Solars entirely for my Zenith. He can't remember past lives, is very new and has no idea what it means to be a Solar. He's still mortal in mindset, and just wants to be the altruistic ruler/hero people need. Also compassion 4.

See? I'd LIKE that, he sounds like someone who makes his own destiny, not like a fanfiction insert who's gotten a huge big pile of shit lined up for him which he couldn't avoid accomplishing if he TRIED.

But, you know, I guess it's my own fault. The Exalted players I'm comparing with are a split between The Freedom Stone-posters who write porn about their characters, people who watch too much anime and guys who, and I quote, "find it distasteful if there's someone in the setting they can't fight and kill."

I couldn't even play with them if I wanted to, because without powergaming like a motherfucker, I'd never fit any challenge that'd fit them.

I honestly just find it kind of masturbatory when someone cleans up EVERY FUCKING CANON VILLAIN and major canon problem. Because these guys have been challenged dozens of times before, they've survived hundreds of efforts to kill them they are OLD AND WISE LIKE NO OTHER MOTHERFUCKERS... and then this bunch of jackasses just waltz in and murder them with a pile of dice.

Taking down even ONE canon villain should be the focus of an entire campaign. Two should be the stuff of legends. Any more and you're writing a fanfic.

IRC games for exalted are much, MUCH better than any real life games. There's room to be creative, it's realtime, and you only know the people as ideas.

We have a slightly bitchy lunar with NO war form, who "Leads" the party, and generally handles negotiations. She's quiet, but the RPer is a fucking god.

The Solar who enjoys crafting a bit too much, who's main motivation is that he is the charge of a heroic mortal, and we're figuring out that he basically gave up making awesome shit just to be more humanesque and protect the guy.

The Sidereal master planner, who while not all that great of a character will fit in well with the group because she has good socials and isn't a fucking idiot.

The Infernal who likes hitting things, and actually tackles his shit and deals with consequences.

And the Abyssal, who's split between making an army, or redeeming himself. Isn't played emo at all, more like a general who'd rape your shit.

Some others, too. The gist is that it really depends on your group. Our ST is high lord of all that exists, when it comes to plots. Just recently we wrapped up about an 8 month plotline where at the end we slayed an infernal villain, leading into another villain. With great deals of out of combat stuff.

    >Taking down even ONE canon villain should be the focus of an entire campaign.

Uh, no. A canon villain is merely a villain who exists in canon. (That was hard, wasn't it?)

Any non canon deathlord, for instance, is going to be somewhere like 100,000 times as difficult to take down as a canon villain like Rakshi (who is just an ordinary lunar + babyeating), who can in turn enslave any number of second circle demon lords, who are themselves, yup, you guessed it, canon villains.

Either way, you're mistaken. There are cases of exalt PCs saving the day, but the big boy threats in Exalted are so fucking powerful and ridiculous that dealing with ALL of them is less like gaming and more like doing taxes... and you will see more posts involving "and then we killed the Lady of Pain" than "and then we killed X Deathlord"

At least our Exalted players all ran off and formed their own little clique that rarely ever interacts with the rest of the server(and then only in the form of hilarious fucking drama: "OH GOD SOMEONE IS SPYING ON OUR PRIVATE GAMES!!!!" reported to the ops) because they couldn't handle criticism or people who said it was a bit worrying when you spent hours debating pregnancy Charms.

I'm really sorry you have to deal with that shit. Is it suptg? That network isn't very good at all, I'm just saying. Also my group might argue a lot, but we have never even discussed pregnancy charms. The only sex aspected character is the Sidereal, and it's not in your face.

Anyways, real players value RP over the mechanics of Exalted. It has interesting lore and a really interesting world in my opinion, which breeds good RP. It helps that the people who play it also play in other RPs. Varying from Fantasycraft(I just learned this system. It's so fucking cool) to D&D(2E. Admittedly we hate 4E usually) to freeform.

Gotta disagree there, I find that Exalted is actively detrimental to roleplaying, systemically. Firstly, the whole personality system restricts what sort of character you can make. Secondly, the fact that you are kind of crippled unless you specialize heavily, means that a lot of character concepts just aren't viable. And thirdly, I find that the combat mechanics are kind of detrimental to the sort of "EPIC BADASS STUNTS" Exalted seems to pride itself on.

Just a bit too autistic, detailed and mechanically driven for my tastes.

Plus, there's nothing so unique about the system that you couldn't recreate it in a generic like BESM and make it faster, better, easier with one or two minor custom rules.

    >>8912208

It's appreciated, but being present on two networks at once is already enough for me. Besides, as shit as SupTG is at times, I do mostly like the place. Some of us try to keep it clean.

She was wrapped in sensible robes because she was a Guvner and not a slut, but Hashkar would hear that she was considered to be stunning by many humanoids a few weeks later. >Firstly, the whole personality system restricts what sort of character you can make

That has always been a bit of a beef with me when it comes to Exalted, too. You have to spend a very nontrivial amount of points to make a character who is very brave and ALSO capable of keeping it inside his pants (because raising both Valor and Temperance is expensive). Character personality being quantified has never sat too alright with me. Social Combat has also always been a bit annoying. Stats telling me whether I want to do something or not are annoying - yes, sometimes you want to do shit but can't. But at least the player should be in total control of what the character wants - it's *his* character, after all. But no, a couple scenes of social combat, and wave goodbye to your Intimacy.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/10(Thu)08:15 No.8912322
    >>8912277

Mhm, I had a tangle with that in one of my few experiences with Exalted gameplay. Basically, because my GM wasn't clever about assigning NPC's social combat stats, I was forced to believe a completely transparent and retarded lie.

Plus, again, yeah, let me fucking roleplay my character like I want to. Trust me to be able to roleplay cowardice, valour, compassion and, occasionally, lechery, when it's relevant and IC.

Don't use the fucking dice to force it.

    >>8912368

Exactly. If I had someone who knew their Exalted better than me to lend me a hand, I could probably port 90% of the mechanics and half the Charms and abilities into BESM over the course of a weekend.

Plus, moving shit into a generic system would also let people make their own charms and still keep them relatively balanced.

    >>8912381

It also introduces an issue, really, which is that largely you have to specialize in combat to be any good at it. And you have to specialize in social stuff to be any good at it. Which means that if you want any ability with knowledge stuff, you either have to be a gullible moron, a fragile weakling or both.

You could spread your points relatively evenly, but then you're just going to get steamrolled on ALL fronts by people who've specialized.

OP, can you do me a favor? If you have any Danish players, ask them why their country smells so much like cheese. Seriously, it's a big problem. Also, why is it that the Danes think they are relevant in the modern world? They aren't, they haven't been for centuries. I mean, in Danish schools, they learn basic American history, but in American schools, what do we learn about Danes? Nothing. Why? Because Danes aren't important.

Does the Lady of Pain have any sort of place in this setting beyond mazing a villain here and there? And what about Vecna?

Originally (since a lot of things in this game are Planescape fluff made into something magical-girls themed in a way that would make an outsider go FFFFF for fun) the Lady was going to be a talkative person called "Pain-chan" who would be very happy and social and act like the group's Chief.

Then I decided screw it and just played the Lady straight.

I'm using her sparingly, though. I might not even have her make an appearance again. As for how she works ingame, she is the one who supposedly told the factions to set up this magical girl business and occasionally a dabus will appear to one of them and tell them to investigate something, but that is the extent of their interaction.

As for Vecna, the PCs stumbled into one of his many lairs (the Astral fortress known as the NOSE OF VECNA) in an early adventure, but that is about it. If I run Die Vecna Die! he might come back.

Well, seeing the Lady at least once again might be nice. After all, she IS the Lady.

And you can't have an Awesome Planescape Adventure without involving Vecna or the Lady some. They're pretty defining, as far as NPC's go.

The Lady works best as an NPC from behind the scenes, though. Most PCs aren't even supposed to see her at all, unless they start worshipping Aoskar or killing people all around Sigil or generally being retarded. And even then, she'd probably just maze them or something rather than make a personal appearance.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/10(Thu)09:21 No.8912971
    >>8912957

True, but not seeing her at least once, or having a flaying or mazing happen somewhere, just sort of makes it feel less like visiting Sigil.

She is pretty hands-off, however, I'll give you that. If it doesn't directly involve her, Sigil itself or Aoskar, she don't give a fuck.

So, the other day, I was showing someone the Factol's Manifesto, and he liked pretty much all of it(though he called the Xaositects "LOL RANDUMB") until he got to Factol Skall. "What?" He burst out, affronted, "It says the players shouldn't be able to beat him in a fight? That they should, in fact, not fight him?! What faggotry!"

Am I the only one who likes the fact that the book basically says: "No, the players cannot murder everyone they come across, in fact, some of these people will utterly kick their asses unless your players are godlike. And if your players are godlike, then you've fucked up."?

There does seem to be a noticeable split in players, however. Some people just want to have POWER and CHANGE THE WORLD NOW.

Others want to start out in the slums and EARN any power they get, they'd rather solve shit with a shovel and a hammer in a creative fashion than melting half the city to glass with a thermonuclear fireball.

Yeah, there's a difference between preferring power and whining when you're faced with an obstacle that you can't overwhelm with dice.

(For instance, with Skall, a very, very clever and skilled group of characters could potentially take out his phylactery on one of the rare occasions he's not anywhere near it. While attacking him head-on, Planescape is ABOUT the absurd options you get.)

Planescape isn't even about combat most of the time. You can almost finish entire campaigns on diplomacy and politics alone.

    >>8923327

Indeed, but at the same time violence SHOULD be an option sometimes, too. Though when it is brought out it should involve some planning.

I mean, leaving the ONLY option as diplomacy is as bad as leaving the ONLY option as violence.

Yeah, most PS adventures have at least one encounter where you can't avoid combat (usually because the NPCs are JUST THAT HOSTILE) and a few where the PCs are expected to engage in combat if they fuck it up.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/10(Thu)23:01 No.8924647
    >>8924612

Which is honestly pretty reasonable, you can't always negotiate... HOWEVER, then you could, say, lure the hostiles into a trap. Sneak around them. Or a bunch of other things that are neither violence or diplomacy.

Also I noted that the Planescape campaign setting recommends the OPPOSITE solution for too murder-happy parties. Things they can't fight, no matter what, because the NPC's aren't scratched by their weapons and just roll their eyes at them if they start getting murderous.
