    “Mortality; behold and fear!
What a change of flesh is here!”

A witch are we. Previously Ingrid sought to investigate the house of Hans, the chief woodcutter of Little Hamlin. Within, she found nothing strange but in casting the cards a murder was revealed! Action was taken to set a wrong to rights and in the present this action has spiralled into bloody violence. A loss of life is certain to ensue – if it has not already.

Our divinatory attentions were interrupted by some inhuman beast, a monstrous blend of animal and human form. Unable to work magic upon it, Ingrid fled to the inn for safety. There, crying bloody murder, she raised the alarm. The innkeeper now stands at the open door with a sword in hand. Without? There is nothing. No beast, no blood, no threat – and thanks to the deceptive magic we have woven, no lingering trace of our running feet either. Simply the innocent snowscape the village has always presented.

Since we know that *something* is going on with the woodcutter, we should attempt to expose him. But first, we should find a more permanent place of residence, and a job.

    Just the one from Macbeth.

    >Tell the innkeeper we saw a horrid beast at the woodcutters.
You calm down as best you can and begin to explain to the innkeeper what wicked thing you found. He keeps an eye on the scene outside as you detail what you can (omitting your trespass into Hans' house). A gradual look of concern spreads over his face until, with the completion of your tale, he shuts and bolts the door. Placing his sword and mug on the nearest table, he gestures to the cook. "Maggie, go on out the back and get m'boy and Alfred. Tell 'em we need to keep watch for a few days." He scratches at the stubble below his chin and turns to you as the fat woman scurries out. "You're sure of what you saw?" He looks unhappy, and in a quieter tone continues, "I'll need to see the Mayor about it, now."

    WHAT DO? (Any questions?)

Looks like our luck has turned.

You've heard stories and fell tales about such creatures before. They are human in shape, but twisted, and with claws for hands or hooves for feet or the sharp and needle teeth of pike. Dull-witted but capricious, they lurk in the woodlands and play tricks and games upon humans - games that the subject rarely survives. Many names are given to these creatures, but most often they are called Elves, or Erls. All of them serve the hideous Erlking, an evil, twisted woodland spirit, more akin in power to a god.

You decide the best course is truth, and explain the magic you cast. The innkeeper doesn't take it as badly as he might have, "It's been a long, long time since we've had magic on our side in these parts," he sighs, "...but those cards said more about you than they did about the travellers, sure enough. With a beast on the loose, mebbe we need a drop of magic." He opens his mouth to continue, but then comes to noise of the back door opening and (mercifully) the sound of multiple footsteps. Two stout young men carrying heavy axes come into the common room, with Maggie behind them short of breath. "Right," he says, "You boys stand guard at each door. Maggie'll tell you what this is about. The lass an' I are going to see the Mayor." He goes behind the bar to pick up a thick woollen cloak.

    >TALLY HO

You put away the cards and accompany the innkeep (it's awkward to keep using that, so he introduces himself as Grice Snr. on the way). He tells you a little about the Mayor as you go - the man is a doctor and will be at his practice and home right now. There's a meeting every third day in the town hall, which he points out - the largest building in the village, but otherwise just as unremarkable as any of the others. Thankfully the doctor's practice is on the opposite side of the village from Hans' shack, and you are able to avoid it while of course still keeping watchful and aware. Evening is beginning to close, and there is no movement other than yourselves in the darkening village. Within ten minutes you are knocking on the door of the house, puffing steam from red cheeks as night descends.

It's the mayor who opens it, a thin, sallow man with a stooped and hawk-like bald head. He wears a brass medallion of office over his otherwise plain robes which are nevertheless dyed an expensive black. He looks to Grice, ignoring you, and asks in a nasal voice, "Yes? What is it?"

The innkeep deferentially requests admittance, and tells him of the beast you saw. Ushered in, you stand within a hallway that neatly divides the house - to the left lie the doctor's office and other medicinal rooms. On the right, the household proper. At the end of the hallway there is a militiaman with a shortspear. The Mayor invites you into a large sitting room on the right, and once you've sat down Grice begins to speak urgently of the details you told him. Do you wish to speak up? To stand up and do something?

    WHAT DO?

It's a fairly well-furnished sitting room, beyond the standards of what you expect for such a small village. The mayor probably has a business that extends beyond the borders of Little Hamlin.

    >WARNING ELVES APPROACHING
You chime in under a lull in the conversation and describe what you know of elves and their dangers. The mayor adopts a grave look and Grice stares at you uncompromisingly. Finally, it is the mayor who replies, "That is most worrying," he says, crisp and accentless, "I shall have the militia summoned immediately. We'll set a ring around the village and have a patrol check each house in turn." He stands up, and beckons Grice to rise with him. "The sergeant here will accompany me to the Hall and we'll blow the horn. I would urge you to stay here under the care of my guards, though if you wish to return to the inn I can have one take you there."

The manner of the man is concerned and appropriate, but your practised senses can tell something wrong. The Mayor is being deceptive and you get the impression he at least knows of elves already, if not the one abroad in the region.

Grice and the Mayor depart, and the guard who stood at the end of the hall comes with you to escort you to the inn. The guard is a young man, tall, with a thin scar cutting across his lip, chip and throat. He looks you up and down steadily while you still stand in the torchlit practice, introducing himself as Alric. With a shout to a replacement you depart, him leading with his spear clutched tightly in both hands. The night seems to cluster round Hamlin like a fog - the stars shine brightly above, but even with the reflecting snowfall the way forward is hazy, occluded.

Alric doesn't talk much until the inn is in sight and your return is silent and uneventful. As you approach, he says, "You saw an... elf, then? Did it see you?"

My logic: As I understand the magic system here, if you can create an atmosphere appropriate to whatever spells you're trying to use, they'll be more effective. If we're trying to use deceit spells, make sure that there's confusion and misinformation flying around. If we're trying to really get prophetic, we need to make the surrounding mood support that as much as possible- such as setting ourselves up with a group of people who genuinely believe that we have great powers of foretelling.

My understanding, at any rate. Could be wrong.

You step into the roaring warmth of the common room and as the youth shuts the door behind me you distinctly here the militiaman's voice again. You cut the deck sinister and place five cards on the table.

The first, here, represents the theme of the issue - the root of the deception. It is the reversed Page of Cups. A young man hoists an enormous golden cup above his head. The card reflects sour business and bitter deals as well as oblivion to the reality of the world. It also represents, elementally, water acting as earth. Treacherous water! Witches do well to be wary of that element. The card indicates that the villagers are contaminated by otherworldly forces - they lie fascinated in the thrall of elves.

The next card is the Ace of Swords, also reversed. An ethereal hand grasps an enormous blade. This card indicates what stands in the way of the deception, and what may hold the key to unravelling it. Indicated by the Ace of Swords is the casting aside of reason and intelligence, the abuse of power and (perhaps) dangerous new ideas.

Your third card is The World. This is an auspicious sign. A dancer moves silhouetted by the globe on this card, which indicates an ending to a long-term projects. Celebration, success and praise will follow. You are being told that the ending of the elves' domination is in sight here. Hope is not yet lost.

You turn over the fourth card and it is one you drew earlier in the day. The Chariot, reversed. It indicates oncoming violence and brute force. You begin to anticipate the meaning of this card in the deception when a RAP RAP RAP comes at the door. The militia patrol checking houses, probably - can you afford to greet them?

Aren't Grice and Alfred keeping watch? Why don't they answer the door?

Yeah, Grice's son is unlocking the door basically RIGHT NOW. You have a few seconds to act if you want to.

To turn yourself completely invisible is quite difficult, I'd require a roll and you wouldn't be able to maintain it long.

    >>8674060
In this case, it won't bring bad luck.

    So, this reading:
-The elves have control of the village, or at least its leaders.
-Said leaders are abusing their power, and if we can expose them then other people might be willing to work against them.
-And hopefully be victorious, everyone parties. Long-held project ending is hopefully the elf deal.
-Brute force is... probably standing in our way? But we're pretty badass, we can likely take it.

Being mindful of our first draw, which counseled us to be wary of treachery and follow our intuition, I think we should be out of the room as the guard arrives and possibly concealing ourselves with magic, to create a "She was just here!" moment. Which will hopefully reinforce our rep for later similar moments.

I thought I gave an action- leave the room while others' attention is on the door. Use magic to make people less likely to notice us leaving, if we can do so with subtlety. Take our cards with us and glance at the final draw if possible.

    Just wanted more consensus.

You rise with the rapping at the threshold and turn over the last card as you do. You fold them all into a sheaf with the unseen one turned at their head. The card is Death.

Moving, you begin to weave a spell as the door bursts open. Grice and three militiaman stand, armed and armoured with the steam of their breath hanging shroudlike around their starlit, shadowed bodies. The sergeant roars, "WHERE IS SHE?!" moments after you slip past sight at the bottom of the stairs, your flickering form providing concealment. These men have come for you, and your magic will not hold up directly against so many prying eyes if they catch sight of you again.

That's where we'll finish tonight. I thank you all for your participation.
